Junk Mail "On My Mac" and POP Account Mailboxes

Sailing along just fine for a year or so and now all my junk mail is going to my POP account instead of "on my Mac". How do I get it back to "On my Mac" so I can screen it and delete what I want and save the rest. I can't read it on the POP account. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
What are your selections in Mail Preferences/Junk Mail?
If moving messages marked as Junk to another mailbox, they should appear in a mailbox beneath the Junk Icon, but labeled with the name of your POP account. If you first move message to another, On My Mac mailbox, and subsequently mark as Junk, then I think then it might move to an On My Mac mailbox beneath the Junk Icon.
More info, please.

If the settings are correct?, Then delete the account and start over. You may also try to restart your phone by holding the home and off button down till the apple symbol comes up.

Ok Apple users...Is there a way to delete e-mails on my Mac and not have to delete the same e-mails on my iPhone, and iPad...and vise-versa. I have the Cloud, and thought that everything would sync all of the time. If you know of a setting I need to adjust, please let me know.

Are you referring to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com emails? Or some other email providers emails?
If the former, it should do that automatically. If the latter, no. iCloud does not (nor is it supposed to) sync non-Apple provided emails.

  • Massive frustration with Apple Mail and POP accounts going offline

I love Apple mail. Best interface ever.
BUT... because of issues with Apple Mail, I've been forced to use Entourage.
I really want to use Apple Mail and hope someone here can help me with this.
I have two Yahoo business mail POP accounts that I need to have running for an online business I have. I keep Mail running all day and my .Mac IMAP account and a Comcast POP account stay up all the time.
But the two Yahoo accounts keep going offline. I get an Apple Mail message asking me to reenter my password. They won't stay up more than five minutes or so.
Over the course of a day, this is so irritating that, as I said, I've had to switch to Entourage, where the accounts stay connected all the time and work just fine.
I've scoured the forums here. Deleted .plists, added IP addresses, followed any suggestion that seemed plausible/ But no luck.
If Entourage works, Apple Mail, it seems to me, also should.
    Can anyone help????

Speaking as one forced to use Entourage at work I can with confidence say in my case that they are different products serving different markets with different needs.
Apple did not drop the ball - the server is asking for re-authentication of a POP client. Any POP client should behave the same way. Yes, the client could just provide the credentials again, but it is safer to reequire the user to respond to the request.
That the request happens frequently is a function of the interrelationship between the DHCP lease life, client, and the mail host's response to new information.
Who is providing your DHCP lease?

  • I need a little help accessing my mail on my mac and my iphone 4s after changing my password on Yahoo as someone hacked my account. I can't get mail, I just get Password error every time :(

    Hi people,
A little stumped for what to do here... I had my Yahoo hacked, changed my yahoo password (Yahoo is the account configured to 'mail' on both my mac and iphone)... however since changing my password I have found I can't access my mail on either with out it asking me to enter my password. When I do, it say's 'Password error'. Sometimes it re-directs me to the actual 'Yahoo' browser saying I need to verify my account, but basically I can't use the mail function on either device now! I know you may suggest deleting the account and re-installing it to each device and I feel this would probably work as well but (and this is the tricky bit)... all my NOTES are configured through Yahoo, only some are through icloud (which is odd). All notes are about 201, icloud about 77 and the rest on Yahoo and when I go to delete the account it says it will also delete all my notes :/ Now, I am a bit of a writer, and these notes are pretty sacred to me so losing them isn't an option. I don't want to lose them. Is there anything any one of you lovely peeps can suggest. It would be much appreciated.

Yes, you have encountered Activation Lock (Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support). The only way that phone will ever be usable is if the owner the phone is locked to releases it (see: Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support). If you are lucky the phone is locked to the seller, so you can ask them to unlock it. If the seller is merely a middleman and the previous owner is not the seller it gets much more complicated. It's even possible that you bought a stolen phone, in which case you will never be able to use it and you should return it for a refund.

  • Mail and pop accounts - mail does not retrieve the new messages

Hi, for any reason for last two days my mail application is not able to retrieve my e-mails from my pop account. However I can read and reply the e-mails through the web portal.
Mail.app seems to connect properly to the pop account but it is not able to sync the messages.
Have you ever seem this behaviour?

    Miguel,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Is there any symbol beside the mailboxes of this account? Have you checked to see if the account is Offline? This is different than not be connected, since in Mail each account can separately be taken offline. Click on Mailbox in the Menubar, and check Online Status (available if two or more accounts) or if only one account, whether Go Online is black or Go Offline is black?

  • Junk Mail - On My Mac - Problem Deleting Junk Mail

In the Junk Mail box, there are two sub-folders under it. One says "On My Mac" the other says "Home". The main junk mailbox looks empty. The "On My Mac" mailbox looks emtpy too, but there is an icon next to the folder that says there are 95 messages in there. When I select the folder and go to "Erase Junk Mail" nothing happens. Still nothing is appearing in the main window, but the little icon still shows 95! That number keeps getting bigger too.
How do I get rid of those once and for all. And I kinda want to see them to make sure they are really junk.
    Thanks

    Phil,
I don't have time this morning, before having to go to two church services, to stay with you, but will later in the day.
I need to know all the types of accounts you have. It appears you have at least one .mac account, and one IMAP account. The later is based on the report of the Junk (home).mbox in the Mailboxes folder. With a POP account, the Junk.mbox would properly be in the account folder, and not in the Mailboxes folder.
Regardless of that, the Junk(.mac account).mbox should be at the first level of the Mailboxes folder, and not WITHIN a plain Junk folder. With this structure so mixed up, it is possible to have important messages that you have not seen.
    More info, please.

  • Synchronizing Mail on home Mac and Powerbook (OS 10.4 & 10.3)

I think I used to be able to put my up to date e-mail on my Powerbook when going on a trip and then transfer back it back to my home machine by copying the mail folder in the user library.
However it isn't working now. I get all the current mailboxes but Mail on the powerbook doesn't see any of the mail files from the last several months.
I upgraded my home computer to OS 10.4 several months ago. The PowerBook is still on 10.3.9 Is that the problem? Is the older Mail 1.3.11 unable to read files saved in the current Mail? (I'm on the road now so I don't remember what number the current Mail is.)
If that is the problem I suppose I either need to upgrade the Powerbook or switch to a server based e-mail like Gmail.
What is the recommended solution for keeping e-mail synchronized at home and on the road?

    Hello John.
The mbox format used by Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mbox format used by previous Mail.app versions and is not backwards compatible without a workaround.
What is the recommended solution for keeping e-mail synchronized
at home and on the road?
Using an IMAP type account instead of a POP type account which requires nothing special in order to do so.

  • Getting more Junk Mail in one Mac than the other

I have two Macs I regularly use: a G5 running Tiger, and a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. The G5 gets a minimum of junk mail. The MacBook Pro gets a significant amount. Both junk mail filter settings in Mail preferences are set identical to one another (enable junk filtering - yes, etc.). I can't figure this out. Thanks.

Yes, POP3 mail accounts. I can't understand why this would cause one computer, and not the other, to bear the weight of a majority of the email. I guess one wey is to see if the computer with less email actually never received it, and that it wasn't filtered out. But I honestly still wouldn't know what to do if that happened to be true.

  • Erase Junk mail is grayed out and won't work

I just upgraded to 10.5 and my erase junk mail will not work. I have tried rebuilding the box but it still won't work

For what type of account - IMAP or POP?
If a POP account, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
Delete the Junk.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the account's Junk mailbox and all junk messages within.
Launch Mail, and a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically within the account named folder when the next message received is automatically or manually marked as junk and moved to the account's Junk mailbox.
Test if this resolve the problem.

  • Redirecting Multiple IMAP and POP Accounts to iCloud?

My ultimate goal is be able to sync all of my mail between my desktop and laptop Macs (both on Yosemite). I have 8 email accounts — a few IMAPs, but mostly POPs. I have thousands and thousands of emails saved in Apple Mail mailboxes. Rather than converting each account individually to IMAP, can I redirect all of them to iCloud? And, if so, can I then maintain all of those accounts and all of those mailboxes, without countless hours of work?

Excellent and helpful answer, Roger. Thank you very much. That opened my eyes to a couple of things.
I've been dragging my feet (for a year or two) on doing this, in part because I feel more confident in storing my massive email history locally than somewhere that I can't see. It's just old-school thinking. I do have my Apple Calendar and Contacts now in iCloud, so an old dog can learn new tricks. Still, I back them up locally, maybe once a week, plus I have Time Machine going all the time. And I back up my Mail and Mail Downloads folders, both for safekeeping, as well as to bring my laptop momentarily up-to-date with my desktop Apple Mail.
So, if I were to store my entire Apple Mail life in iCloud, with all of my individual email accounts actually living there (not just pointed there, as I was considering), is there an easy and fast way to keep a local backup? (Zipping and backing up the Mail and Mail Downloads folders literally takes something like four hours.) Or would Time Machine also be backing up what's in the cloud, too, without any effort?
And now to you other eye-opening point about replying. If I actually convert all of my accounts to IMAP and sync all of those accounts with iCloud, would I then be able to send and receive emails as I do now, through my other servers, and using my various email addresses and signatures? By the way, my primary server is Comcast, if that makes any difference.

  • Mail server stops IMAP and POP services, SMTP won't work

    Hello fellow Lion Server users,
I am trying hard to get my mail server productive. I want to fetch mails from my ISP's IMAP mail server and distribute it to all my devices via my own mail server. Also the mails shall be sent via ISPs SMTP.
After managing it being able to send and receive email in the way I want I realized that web server was down. Because I want to use the integrated web mail and Wiki server I had to fix that. After restoring to default values in httpd.conf and others I got that problem solved just to realize that I am not able any more to send and receive email. I would be grateful if you could help me out.
The current status is that Server admin app claims the mail server still running, but POP, IMAP stopped whilst SMTP is running. In my mail.app I can send Emails successfully but they never reach the addressee. Receiving is just not possible at all. The connection doctor in integrated in Mail.app won't find a problem. It claims SMTP and IMAP connections I used before are working.
I use a dyndns forwarding to my server at home. Lion server is up to date. Port forwarding in the router is enabled (for each port Apple suggests).
Even in local network (with this very machine) it is not possible to successfully send or receive emails using localhost. My guess is that something went wrong in the configuration files but I don't know where I have to look and for what exactly.
I also tried a program called MailServe after running into the first problems with the mail server which did so far a good job in configuring of Postfix, Dovecot and Fetchmail but now I am stuck.
Do you have any hints for me, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I think I may have just figured out a part of this puzzle. I have more than just my att account set up in Mail. Even though all of my accounts are setup to use the ATT SMTP server only (with the appropriate ATT login info) I am getting the same rejection notices as everyone else.
I noticed that in the rejection notice though, that it was saying I was sending mail from my other main account, not my sbcglobal (ATT) account. I thought that was strange since I set up all my accounts to use the SBC (ATT) login info for ATT's SMTP Server. So obviously it is a problem in Mail. Mail is somehow confused and sending some wrong piece of info to the SMTP server. When I changed the sender from my other account to my SBCGLOBAL account, the mail went right out with no other problems.
So this isn't a solution for those of you who are struggling with only an ATT account, but I think it points to a possible problem within Mail. The answer might be to delete the accounts in Mail and set them back up again. It's looking like Apple might need to make a tweak to Mail to fix this if indeed this is the correct cause. Hope this helps someone.

  • Why are some inbox messages not appearing in Mail on multiple macs and other devices?

My partner and I have an iMac at home and one at work.  We also have two iPhones and two iPads.  We only have a couple email accounts each and two for work set up on all six Mail applications.  For some reason inbox messages are not appearing consistantly on all six devices.  For example, I can have a new message from my Mom, see it at home and on my iPhone, but not on the iMac at work.
Also, some messages I'd like deleted off my work iMac since they're personal, but I'd like them kept on my home iMac and iPhone.  Is this possible?  Is it possible to delete a message on one and have it deleted on all others?

What type of email accounts are they? IMAP or POP.
IMAP leaves messages on the server so you can get them from everywhere.
With POP, messages are downloaded to your client and then removed from the server, depending on your settings.
The iDevice setup for POP doesn't remove them from the server.
I think Mail's default setup for POP is to remove immediately.
If they are POP accounts, you can set Mail's preferences to leave messages on the server for a period of time so that you can retrieve them on multiple clients.

  • Synch mail messages between Mac and Iphone...

I have a Mac Book Pro (and use Mail) and an Iphone 4. I had expected my mail box to synch such that all the mails I sent on Iphone would appear as sent items on my Mac and vice versa. This doesnt seem to be happening. What am i doing wrong please? Or is this not possible?

It is not possible to "sync" like with music or photos. You need to setup your email account on your iPhone.
