'Junked' RSS items bug: stuck in junk mail count

I accidentally marked some RSS feed items as junk mail when I clicked the wrong button. This caused the count of unread junkmail in my junk folder to go up, but the RSS feed entries do not appear in the junk folder. Since they don't appear there, I can't mark them as read to eliminate the count of new messages, I can't move them back from the junk folder to the RSS feed, and I can't just delete them.
I have tried removing the RSS subscription from Mail, and I have tried rebuilding Mail's envelope index. Neither of these things worked, as my junk folder still has a count of 19 unread messages, even though there are no unread messages there.
So, what can I do to get rid of these phantom items?

I finally got the unread count to be removed by erasing all my junk mail (Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail). I like to keep my junk mail around for a few days just in case something I need gets put into the junk folder, so having to delete all of it wasn't ideal, but also not a big issue either.

Junk Mail Counter

I cannot get rid of the Junk Mail Counter in my main Mail window ( Mail boxes on the left). It shows only next to my forwarded Yahoo junk mail box and keeps creeping up, and up and up ( 53 at last count). Is there a way to reset it to zero or to zap it? I have try everything but reinstalling Mail to get rid of that annoying problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry about the imprecision in describing the problem with the Unread Junk Mail indicator. I am indeed referring to the unread junk mail indicator ( next to the Junk mail box) which I cannot set back to zero even after after using the Delete Junk Mail command in the Mailbox menu. It only shows up on my Yahoo forward mail account. Any help will be welcome. BTW this problem does not show up on my other Mac ( e-Mac and iBook G3).

Some items cannot be deleted from junk mail folder on iPad 2. It will not move to trash.

Have you tried swiping across the message in the preview pane when you open the junk folder instead of opening the email and trying to use the trash can icon?
If that will not work either, try rebooting your iPad and then see if you can delete the junk mail.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I have deleted the item multiple times both on my Mac mini and my touch and 5 minutes later it is back in my Junk mailbox. The item will not return to the Junk mailbox until it is deleted from the trash.

Web bugs in junk mail

When I open something that turns out to be junk mail, I have some concern (perhaps ill-founded) that a web bug (also known as a web beacon) may be letting a spammer know that my address is good. That in turn means more spam.
Some of the mail web interfaces I use (Fastmail) don't load pictures to avoid the possibility of web bugs.
Anyone have any knowledge about web bugs and whether/how they work within Mail messages? Any way to disable them?

If you automatically render all HTML received, when a message is automatically marked as Junk, any HTML that includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server (which is what can reveal that your email address is valid to the spammer) will or should not be rendered. As far as I know, if any embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server are not rendered, you are protected.
This does not apply if a junk message that includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server is not automatically marked as junk when received which is why you should deselect automatically render all HTML received. If a valid message is received that includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server, you can select Load Images to the right and below the message header.

Disable "Erase Junk Mail" and "Erase Deleted Items" Confirmation

Does anyone know of a way to disable the confirmation dialoge box that appears when you right-click on an account in Mail 5.2 and select "Erase Junk Mail" or "Erase Deleted Items"? I've tried holding down Option and then selecting the item, but that doesn't remove the confirmation dialoge.
I'd like to remove the confirmation dialoge completely as it just adds an extra step to something that is otherwise a quick operation to clear out junk mail.

For what type of account - IMAP or POP?
If a POP account, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
Delete the Junk.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the account's Junk mailbox and all junk messages within.
Launch Mail, and a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically within the account named folder when the next message received is automatically or manually marked as junk and moved to the account's Junk mailbox.
Test if this resolve the problem.

Erase Junk Mail is Dimmed

Until recently I was able to "right" click on the Junk Mail folder in the Mail.app and select Erase Junk Mail. Now when I bring up the contextual menu Erase Junk Mail is dimmed as is Erase Junk Mail from the Mailbox menu is also dimmed. Any ideas?

Agreed. I had just changed my Junk Mail preferences to "Perform Custom Actions" and the same thing happened to me - no more "Erase Junk Mail".
Changing the preference item back to "Move it to the Junk mailbox" restored the "Erase Junk Mail" functionality. BTW: hitting the reset button wasn't required.
Personally, I think this is a nice little bug.

James Send to Junk Mail

Hello , i am using james 2.2.0 installed on a server with a online DNS , it recives mails properly , but when i try to send emails ( also when using Authenticated SMTP) , mail go to junk mails ( as hotmail and yahoo) , When i use Outlook express outside the server to send mail i get the following error :

you have to change the config.xml to allow the server accept relay mails from your host machine from which you are sendign the mail ...
ie

I have several imap accounts and want to click one button to empty all junk mail at once. How can I do this?

I currently run Apple Mail on Lion with several IMAP acocunts... I know that there is a right-click option to remove "all deleted" messages but what If I wanted to do the same for all messages marked at junk in all accounts. It's really a pain to have to click on each account, select all the junk in the junk folder, press delete over and over.. and then right-click and select "Erase Deleted Items" Why the heck can't they just have "Erase All Spam Items" also... ?? Or how about "Erase all SPAM and DELETED ITEMS from ALL accounts" ????

I found the solution and here's how to correct things:
Apple Mail
Mail has a feature, accessible from the Mailbox Behaviors (or Special Mailboxes) tab of the Accounts preferences, that can automatically delete old spam messages from the Junk mailbox. You can use this feature if you tell SpamSieve to put spam messages in the Junk mailbox instead of the Spam mailbox.
(Note: If you do this, be careful not to use the Junk and Not Junk buttons that will appear in Mail when the Junk mailbox is active; you should always use the SpamSieve - Train as Good and SpamSieve - Train as Spam commands instead. You can use the Customize Toolbar… command in Mail’s View menu to remove the Junk button from the toolbar. Also, if you select a message that SpamSieve has classified as spam, Mail will show a banner saying that you marked it as junk. Ignore this.)
Make sure that Mail knows which mailbox is your Junk mailbox by selecting it and choosing Mailbox ‣ Use This Mailbox For ‣ Junk.
To tell SpamSieve to use the Junk mailbox, open Mail’s Preferences window and click on Junk Mail. Make sure that Enable junk mail filtering is checked. Select Move it to the Junk mailbox. If Mail asks whether you want to move all the messages to the Junk mailbox, say No. Next, select Perform custom actions. Then click theAdvanced… button and edit the rule such that the conditions don’t match any messages. For example, use these two conditions:
Message is addressed to my Full Name
Message is not addressed to my Full Name
and set it to If all of the following conditions are met. Click OK to close the sheet. Do not make any further changes to the Junk Mail preferences.
Go to the Rules section of Mail’s preferences and change the SpamSieve rule to move the messages to the Junk mailbox instead of the Spam mailbox. Finally, chooseSpamSieve - Change Settings from Mail’s Message menu and, when prompted, say that the name of your spam mailbox is Junk.

Junk Mail folder refusing to show messages from a particular account

So, I have a weird problem with Leopard Mail (3.2) - when I click on the junk mail folder, 99% of the time it won't show messages from my Yahoo POP account. The only way I can get messages from this account to show is by expanding the junk mail folder, clicking on a different sub-account, then clicking on my Yahoo account. This will show the messages in its junk folder, and if I click on the combined junk folder they will show up inside it. This will work until I click away from junk - say, to my inbox - at which point the procedure will need to be repeated if I wish to see my Yahoo junk mail.
I've only noticed it very recently, but I'm not sure how long it's been going on. Unbelievably annoying. I deleted the junk folder, no luck. I toggled the account off/on - this seemed to work for a day, but the behaviour's back and I can't make this work again. I rebuilt the mailbox... Even deleted and added the account again, but it still did the same thing.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a bug in Leopard Mail? Something specifically with POP accounts, perhaps? (My 5 IMAP accounts seem fine). If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be really, really grateful.

Ok, so, something in way of an update: Normal behaviour appears to be restored after Mail detects a piece of junk mail and puts it in the junk folder for this account (manual marking of junk doesn't do the trick). Then it works ok until I quit Mail.

How to unmark junk mail in mail 5.1?

I am unable to find a way to unmark mail as junk in Mail 5.1 (OS X Lion). In previous versions of Mail, there were obvious ways to do this.
Can someone tell me how to do this?

Aha.   I reset the junk mail under Mail->Preferences->Junk Mail, and the behavior changed. Now the menu item and toolbar button act as toggles, whereas they did not before the reset.
BUT: junk mail handling gives us a choice between a) moving junk mail to the junk mailbox or b) marking it as junk but leaving it in the inbox.   Now I don't see a way to make it do both, even through the custom handling option.
Why do I want it to do both?   I want to make sure the the filter is learning what I think is junk and what I think is is not, and I want the junk out of the way.

Feature Request: Option to not require confirmation of erasing Junk Mail

Many (maybe most) choices that bring up a confirmation dialog allow the user to bypass the dialog by pressing the Option key. I hope that this capability will be extended to erasing Junk Mail in the Mail app (and, wishing here) to erasing deleted items as well. In all the years I've been using the Mac and supporting Mac users, I have only encountered two instances where the confirmation got a cancellation of the erasure and requiring the Option key to bypass would not have affected those users. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to grab our pointing device to confirm, since Cancel is the default. Lots of wasted motion for an infinitesimal safeguard.

If you have an IMAP email account then you can create additional folders by logging into your email account on a browser and creating them there - they should then appear in the Mail. If you have a POP email account then you're stuck with the folders that you've got.

Turn off "Are you Sure" Warning Deleting Junk Mail

In MS Oultook you can turn off the "are you sure" warning when you want to empty the trash or erase junk mail. Can you do it Mail on a Mac? I've been through the Preferences and tried Googling it, but I don't find anything.

OK. I understand about "erase deleted items", you might accidentally delete something, but junk mail? "Erase Junk Mail" I need an "are you sure" warning for that?
