Just a comment / question

Since Apple managed to do the difficult thing (producing a very light laptop) why didn't they give it a smaller screen to make it compact and even lighter?
An 11 or 12inch screen would be far more appropriate I think.
Just a thought...

There selling point was the full sized keyboard and screen according to the keynote plus various interviews done.

  • Just a comment/question on OS upgrades (VZW/Sprint).

    First, the question:
I upgraded the 8330 Curve OS to 4.5 on a friend's device (VZW).  No problem, everything seems to work as near as he can tell, but for some reason it is very laggy...I searched and couldn't find a specific answer to the question.
What he reported as laggy was opening pics in the phone.  I then learned that his device did not come with a micro SD, and he has saved all of his pictures to the device memory.  How would the new OS affect this, when he had no problems or issues with this on the old OS?  I suggested he purchase an 8g micro sd hc, and get all of that garbage off of the internal memory.
Also, I did not see the "docs to go" app anywhere, wondered if that was supposed to be an icon or an application - either way it isn't there.
    Now, the comment:
On this and several other sites, I've seen the virtual frothing at the mouth for everyone that wants to upgrade to the "latest and greatest" OS.  (Which by the way, I am crediting to the election of Barack Obama.) I have learned a lot through research, and I understand that each vendor puts out the version when they finish testing, etc...
I also understand that people will delete vendor xml's to load another carrier's 4.5, but now I see that they have released like .89 already, when everyone was so crazy to get .77 (which appears to even have some issues).
    Isn't there a better way?
As a regular, non-tekkie kind of guy, I get awful confused when RIM says they've released 4.5, only to be frustrated for 12 hours with my Sprint device trying to upload it because it hasn't yet been released by Sprint.  Does it support MMS, does it not support MMS? Who do I find out officially from whether it supports MMS?  It seems as though all of these instructions breed nothing but more questions and problems.  When non-tekkies look for answers, they want to simply click a button - update complete, works great.  Not the case with the new OS frenzy, and it seems every site has a different answer, different supposition, and repeatedly has to create new threads because people can't seem to find the "SEARCH" feature.
I appreciate truly, all of the help I've received here just for a few minor issues that I've had, but doesn't providing "instructional material" for us nontechnical morons, just an exercise in creating another "HELP, I'VE NUKED MY BERRY" thread?
    Okay, deep breaths.
    [/rant]
On another note, I've had BB's since my clunky NEXTEL 75xx series. Then an 8703e. I never knew the capability of the device until I immersed myself in it.  I've converted my best buddy (pocket POS user for years), my wife (pocket POS owner and loather), my sis and brother in law - all to 8330's and all have repeated resoundingly the comment that I have made for years:  A BB will change your life.
And I can't believe how many co-workers of my wife (an RN) who have bought BB's and absolutely HATE them, until she shows them (thru messenger to me on how to fix or use something) just what they can do.
I sure hope I haven't wasted anyone's time with this post, and hope I'm not violating some term of service for ranting like a nut.  Just had to get that off my chest.
    Have a great day.

do you feel better ? Sometimes rantings as you called it, make one feel better!

  • Just a technical question

    Hi,
I'm not a developer but I wanted to ask here since I presume there're a lot more tech savvy people that could possibly give me a proper answer to just one small question regarding behavior of Mac OS X using the following example: at some moment I suddenly discovered that the Trackpad option which allows for search through the English Dictionary (Thesaurus, etc) tapping a highlighted word with three fingers no longer worked as before: when I tapped nothing happened or other word was "processed" in what seemed to me to be a chaotic order. I reset PRAM and its normal functioning returned. What exactly happened with the system that it started act incorrectly until the PRAM reset? I remember though that some days ago (before I discovered the issue) I did one more SMC and PRAM reset and performing the latter I released the combination of keys after the third chime. I then thought that it was too much so I repeated the operation exactly as recommended. Could the repetitive reset of PRAM be the reason and kind of shock to the OS?
Would be happy to hear your opinions
    Have a nice day

Are you sure you haven;t turn it off in System Preferences->TrackPad;Point & Click?
    There it is called Lookup

Whenever I ask Siri a question it just links me to a website instead of just saying the answer.  The reason I ask Siri is because i am not in a position to look at my phone.  How can I get Siri to just answer my questions??

I found that the only time Siri will read anything to you is if it finds a Wikipedia article. Siri will let you know it found that, and ask if you want it to be read out loud. Other than that you will hear the "I found this, take a look".
The only other thing you can do is activate "Speak Screen". It will involve you taking a look at your phone for a moment, selecting what you'd like to look at, but Siri will read the content to you. It's in Settings > General > Accessibility.  Once activated, all you have to do is slide two fingers from the top of the screen and you will have it read to you. I use it all the time because of my astigmatism. It's pretty useful.

  • Hi guys. Just a quick question. My wife has a Mac Book Pro and when she is browsing the web she can use a two fingered gesture to go back to her previous page (by swiping from right to left). Is there any way to set that up on my iPad Mini. Many thanks.

Not in the Safari browser she can't. That is not supported on the iPad. There are other mobile browsers that do have that functionality - one is iCab Mobile.

Hi there, I just bought an iMac 2011.  Just a quick question.  Are those keyboard and mouse batteries that comes with the package are rechargeable?  Thanks!

Mine was bought last year and they were not; it they don't say "rechargeable". they're not. I started to use rechargeable as soon as the original batteries died.

When I do a "CLEAR RECENT HISTORY" and THOUGH I DO NOT ACTIVATE THE FIRST LINE "BROWSING AND DOWNLOAD HISTORY", MY DOWNLOADS ARE NEVERTHELESS DELETED.
I just posted this question under the "OTHER" category and got 2 replies, neither of which solves this problem!
    IS THERE A SOLUTION? Thanks

Are you the same poster as Raphaex who posted using Windows 8.1 in this thread and provided a full and detailed set of data accessible using the "More System Details" link: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1011435 ??
If not, could you provide a link to the earlier discussion on your situation if there is one? I don't want to repeat what you haven't found helpful, and also, it's critical to know your correct configuration information and not waste everyone's time typing out advice that is totally irrelevant.
To provide the missing details on your configuration:
    # Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
#* Click the "3-bar" menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click on help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''.
#* Type '''about:support''' into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
    # In the top left corner of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
#Now, come back to this thread, right-click in the reply box and select '''Paste''' from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press Command+v) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
Usually, this does not contain personal information, but I suggest you skim down and make sure you do not see your email address in there (XX it out ).

  • No question here, , just  a comment I verigzon sucks,  I had an aircard and didn't work, not the first one either.  they have 3 years of

this site even sucks,  I have had a running battle with verizon for four years.  I had an air card that kept going from 1x 2g 3g 4g and back.  they told me that i was in a switching station and my issue.  I told them my house doesnt move.  then after putting up with this and haveing to wait to send my invoiecdes to my customers when it happened to work was unacceptable.  we finnalyhad to say goodbye.  O boy that didn't settle well.  they have put me through the ringer.  To the point that just today I got it straightened out.  I think.  they suspended my service and then sent me a bill for 73 bucks.  they tried to charge me 350.00 for terminating and I have been a customer for over ten years.  they charge me little fees on my bill every couple of months.  Its incredible.  If i ran my business liike this I would be out of business in a month.  I stuck till 2015 then I'm gone, somebody has to have better service.  fyi I pay 210 bucks per month, I'm not a small customer.  I have many more comments but this is getting long, will give more details later

    markchackett
Well, that was pointless. You didn't specify anything that happened, and I'm not quite sure who you expected to see this. This is mainly a customer-to-customer support forum. Verizon does respond, but it's debatable whether they would reply here.
Also, the ETF applies to everyone. You signed a contract with them agreeing to the ETF. It doesn't matter whether you've been a customer for 10 years or just started last month, a contract is a contract.

  • No question, just a comment. Why don't more people know about iMacs?

Having put up with frustrating PC based computers for the past 16 years or so, I can't believe the beauty of a Mac.
Simple, clean, easy to set up, everything just works, it doesn't need rebooting every 5 minutes...... These things are heaven sent!
I will not be going back to the "dark side" any time soon....
WoHoo, what a find, I can see why my mates rave about them so much.

  • No question- just a comment

Just got the Airport Extreme base station and wow......    can't believe how pleased I am.
I've had a router in the basement for years and could rarely get the Apple TV to work upstairs (ie, 2 hours to load a movie)
I also have an old Mac Pro Core 8 with no WiFi and bought the Airport box thing that looks like an apple tv.
For the first time ever, I've got a fast internet connection upstairs.
Not only that but all I could think as I was opening the well designed box, easy to unpack etc...was  "yeah Steve Jobs!!!"
Finally somebody who knew how to get it right.
Congrats.    Hope Apple continues to always follow his example in the future now that he's passed.

This is a user-to-user support forum so it isn't us that did anything to Pages. You can give feedback to Apple at https://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

  • Just a dummy question

Please , help me get through the following:
In the licensing manner do I need to be on Oracle Enterprise Edition to use the Tuning Pack? when you're on standard Edition?
    My answer is no.
But my boss insist if I'm sure, that's why I need other eyes to confim my assertion.
    Thanks enough

    Hi Justin,
Plz excuse me if I am wrong, but aren't there command
line scripts designed to be run from within sqlplus
that provide the same reports as using the AWR (GUI)
interface? Such as awrrpt.sql, awrinfo.sql, and
ashrpt.sql? Are these restricted only for use with
EE, or can they be used (legally) with SE?As has been made clear, you touch it, you buy it. And they are watching.
I haven't tried the scripts, but if you google for oracle s-ash [correction: "s-ash" with the quotes] there is a very interesting simulated ash which doesn't violate anything as far as I know.
    >
As for the comment regarding buying a car and not
being able to exceed certain speeds: T his is
becoming more popular, even with hardware. Some
vendors (such as HP) will sell you a server loaded
with CPUs, but you are only allowed to configure the
number of CPUs that you purchased and pay support on.Heck, even some cars are sold for different prices. A few years ago, certain cars were made from the same parts on the same assembly line by the same people (just minor interior fabric differences and stinking badges), and people were convinced the Toyotas were better than the Chevrolets.
Now the licensing is sometimes based on sockets, not whether there is anything in the sockets!
Ask a dummy question, the answer may be insane.

  • Spotlight Comments - questions, limits and opinions

My wife and I are a little behind the curve. We updated our MacBook Pros, MacPro and PowerMac G5 to Leopard early this year in part due to the fact that my testing showed that Spotlight Comments are persistent on our home ethernet - If I put identifying comments in a file's Get Info > Spotlight Comments box while it is on my MacBook's Desktop, then move it to a "file server" (a shared drive on the PowerMac or MacPro), my wife can see and modify the Comment from her MacBook. The comments almost seem to be part of the file itself (yes, Francine, we know they really are not) unlike the volatile pre-X Finder Comments. We do not normally have any Windows machines on our network and when we do we certainly do not use one as a file server. We're pretty much vanilla Apple.
    Now, on to my questions:
1 - if not in the file itself, where are the Spotlight Comments actually stored? If they're in a folder's .DS_Store files, then they would disappear if you nuke those files (like when trying to fix a folder that is not properly displaying its contents) and that has not been my experience. I know that you can use mdls in the Terminal to show the comment and the other useful stuff that appears in Get Info's More Info field, but can this data get separated from the file it is connected to, or is it in that mystical Resource Fork? I'm not a developer (JavaScript is about as much code as I can handle) so I don't need the gory details. I just want to know if we can nuke Comments by unintentionally deleting some invisible file.
2 - What are the limits in Spotlight Comments? Are there any? How many characters will that field take? I am asking this since I have been trying to put info concerning an image into its Spotlight Comment field and once I close the Get Info window the Comment is gone. If I check with mdls in Terminal the image's kMDItemFinderComment field is not even created. I have been trimming off hunks of characters in the Comment and am now below 700 but it still won't take it (the file is not locked, I have full control of it, and it doesn't appear to matter what files' or folders' Comments field I try to paste it into). Is this limit documented anywhere, because I've been Googling for it all morning with no matches.
3 - if not Spotlight Comments, then what? I see DefaultFolder has an option to write Comments as "OpenMeta Tags" but what little I could understand upon looking that up made it sound like they're Spotlight Comments that are embedded into the file itself - even files that do not normally have a spot for Comments. Putting the description in the filename is much easier in X than previously, but gets a bit unwieldy very quickly. Many (but not all) image formats can accept descriptions in things like EXIF, but doing so changes its Modification Date and screws up our sorting...
4 - only tangentially related: how many years did it take for Apple to put in Safari a function that we made use of all the time in Netscape & IE in pre-X times: put the source URL of a download in the Comment field. Now why can't the Mozilla team put that in Firefox? It's not like I haven't posted that as a feature request multiple times...
I know that file "tagging" is a hot topic and I do not expect a real solution here, but if someone can confirm that there is a character limit in a file's Spotlight Comment field and let us know where or if it's documented...
Message was edited by: Notary Sojak

UPDATE - apparently once a file's kMDItemFinderComment field is created (I got the Comment to stick once I was below 600 characters) it can take more characters. I jut replaced the successful 595 character comment with the full 735 character comment I had initially been unable to add and it is visible from all the Macs.
