Just a feedback re Ati Radeon 4870 HD  512mb (from Apple UK Website)

I know lots of people have been asking if this card works on 2006 Mac Pros V.1.1.
Well I took the plunge and purchased one fitted it into my MP with leopard O/S
and away it went no problemo as they say Sinc doing this I have updated my
O/S to Snow Leopard and the card run brilliantly with it. I hope this helps
clarify that this card will work with V1.1 despite what Apple state in their
website advertisement.
Happy computing Denis

A 5770 is $249 or slightly less and in the same dept to me as replacing hard drives, adding some RAM in order to work and because my understanding is it was the first card to support 3 monitors.
The 5770 only requires 10.6.5+ - and the 4,1 had way too many issues with 10.5.7/10.5.8
The 4870 may or may not provide what you need for the software you run, even though 3 yr old machine but 4 yr old plus video card.

The default card was Nvidia GT120 and req'd no power cables and popular way to support more displays.
People were running DUAL 4870s to support 3rd monitor though back then:

  • ATI Radeon 4870 in a MacPro 2,1 not working!

Recently I switched out my ATI Radeon 1900 for an upgrade to the ATI Radeon 4870... Apple states that the 4870 is not compatible with the MacPro 2,1... But numerous "Mac-heads" commented on the Q&A page on the Apple Store for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that it was compatible. So I order it...
The switch out was extremely easy the ATI Radeon 4870 had 2 power cables to connect as oppose to 1 for the 1900. The Graphic card worked smooth at first... then I noticed when I was in icon view the icons had a poor quality image. Today with the download of Adobe Flash 10.1 the quality of every flash image is poor just like it was in icon view...now all the YouTube videos look like they have static going through them... For the older population (+40) the video looks like the reception of UFH channel on a TV from the 70's...before there was cable or satellite dishes... when a remote was called a clicker! Just too much snow on the images!
Does anyone have an idea to correct this? Is there a way to download ATI Radeon 4870 Mac drivers? I know that they are built into the 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but since this is a MacPro 2,1 will it known to have updated drivers downloaded to this computer? or am I a "pinhead" for have listened to these "Mac-heads"... Is there a way to go back to Adobe Flash 10.0? Should I just swap-out the 4870 for the 1900 and make the 4870 a $350.00 paperweight... Have to admit that the 4870 is completely quite... no noise what so ever... can not even hear the fan.
    Thanks

Assuming it's the card made for Mac (and not a PC card that's been altered/flashed to work in a Mac Pro), it really ought to work.
Drivers for the card aren't available separately anymore. You're absolutely right, they're built into Snow Leopard, but they should also be built into Leopard as well. It's possible that something mucked up the driver installation, to check it simply download and install the 'combo updater' for the most recent version of Mac OS that you're using.
For Leopard, get the 10.5.8 combo updater here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
For Snow Leopard, get 10.6.3 v1.1 combo updater here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017
    Hope that helps!

  • How Do I use an Ati Radeon 4870 HD for 3 Monitors

I am new to the Apple world and community.  I recently got a new job that requires me to use a Mac Pro.  OS X version 10.6.8.  2.66 ghz dual xeon and 32 GB of ram.  It has a ATI Radeon 4870 HD.  I can run 2 monitors fine using the DVI and Mini DV port ( Using a convertor from apple. ).  When I try to use the 2 other HDMI ports for my third monitor, Mac OS wont detect it.  The wierd thing is some of the images from certain apps show on the 3rd Monitor.
Under graphics information it shows the Radeon 4870.  Under PCIe information it shows the same card.  On the back of my machine I have 2 HDMI slots and another lower down with Mini DV and DVI.
The Displays I am running are 3 HP LP2475w Monitors.  Running in DVI mode with one converted to Mini DV.  The 3rd non working is running in DVI to HDMI but it can be run Straight HDMI if need.  Ive tried alot of configuration settings and I can't get the HDMI port to be detected by MAC OS.  Ive plugged one in at a time and just the HDMI do not detect.
Please let me know what information is needed to help troubleshoot this better.

  • ATI Radeon 4870 on K9AGM2-L ?

Hello, I am planning to buy a new ATI radeon 4870 video card. But I need at least 2 SATA because I am using 2 SATA HDDs. It is a double slot video card solution and I see it is long...Does anyone have such card installed on this mobo MSI K9AGM2-L? Does it cove all the SATA connectors? Thanks.

Thanks I have found some dimensions of the ATI card: http://forums.gameon.co.uk/showthread.php?p=381274
And as I measured it will definitely be all over 4 SATA connectors. So everybody that wants a double slot video card and in length over 21cm will need those right angel SATA cables. When I will get them and also the ATI 4870 I will post a picture here. I hope it will fit even with those cables...
I measured it in my case and probably it would fit - the ATI radeon 4870 + Those 90°SATA cables
Ok So I finally bought everything what I needed,  but I have now Gainward ATI radeon 4850 GS instead of mentioned 4870. 4850 (9,25") is slightly smaller than 4870 (9,5"). With difficulties I have installed my card into the microATX mobo, when you have double slot videocard you CANNOT use any SATA connector on the MOBO! As you can see on the pictures below it just fits with the 90°SATA cables, BUT the plastic cover on the cooler is thinner than the card and when I pull out the card some condensers are bent on that side where are the SATAs...
It is definitely a good idea to buy a standart ATX motherboard in this case...

  • Mac Pro 1.1/ATI Radeon 4870 HD won't detect monitor on boot/sleep

    Hey there all,
    First post.
Been following for a while now.
I'm running into a problem with my MacPro..
When I boot the tower up, the chime rings [through the built-in speaker--not my connected and powered externals]
The video signal will sometimes show up just for a couple of seconds while the Gray-Gear Screen loads and then will instantly loose signal and continue to not detect the display until I suffocate the tower, pull out the DVI adapter and reboot without the display connected until I can hear the volume adjust through my external speakers. . I can then proceed to plug in the adapter and the computer works as it should-- that is, until I put it to sleep and then I must start the whole process over.
I am getting sick of having to do my usual ritual in order to use this machine.
Could it a driver/capatabliliy thing? Or perhaps an installed-OS malfunction?
Is there a way to tell if the card has been flashed to work on the Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for looking into this.
    Cheers.
    -B

Okay.. so I did the smc reset. No luck.
I've contacted the seller that I purchased the computer from and he told me that the tower had previous trouble with the card that it came with.. he didn't specify which card, but he's made arrangements for a 3rd party seller to send me an ATI Radeon X1900 with 512mb RAM [same capacity I had before in the Radeon 4870 HD]
Is there a significant difference between these two cards?
Should I have the 3rd party send me the same 4870 HD model? and if so, would the problem persist?
Thanks again, and any help is much appreciated.
    Cheers.

  • Early08 Mac Pro ATI Radeon 4870 Upgrade w/ 24" LED Cinema Display

I have just received the ATI Radeon 4870 upgrade kit for my early 2008 Mac Pro (dual quad) which permits me to use the new LED Cinema Display (I now have a mini display port). Almost everything works well but find I am unable to manually put the display to sleep. It just seems to freeze and not go dark. Am using OS 10.5.6. I know the card is a new product. Is anyone else having the same problem?
    Thanks,
    Jack

This information is GOLD! Solid GOLD!
I have an early-'08 Pro also, and got the HD 4870 this afternoon via FedEx. I tried running a game, and got a "Cannot load 3D acceleration" error message. I noticed that moving windows was choppy, as was switching between Spaces pages. I called AppleCare, and after a loooooooong discussion with some very friendly folks, the tech support guy sent me to the Apple Store support to initiate an exchange.
I then found this thread, downloaded the beta drivers, and BAM! it works like I hoped it would, blazing fast graphics.
I called AppleCare back so they'd be aware of it, and while I was on the phone, the guy even followed that link and said, "Wow, what the heck is that site?" He was very happy to have the information.
    Spread the word!
Of course, then, today, I noticed on MacRumors that a new nvidia card is going to be offered as an upgrade next month. Sigh. I think I'm happy enough with this one to ignore the nVidia offering. I hope 10.5.7 comes out soon.

  • ATI Radeon 4870 won't detect second display

ATI Radeon 4870 won't detect second display I have a sony that come up as a sdm-hs95p and a asus that i want to connect they both have vga and both have conveters vga to dvi and on the asus it also has a dvi to mini dp because on the graphics card it has dvi and mini dp

You can't use more than one converter per display.
You need to get single converter that connects directly from the Mac port to the display.

  • Ati Radeon 4870

  • What is the benefit of up grading from ATI Radeon 1900 to ATI Radeon 4870?

What is the benefit of up grading from ATI Radeon 1900 to ATI Radeon 4870?. Will the average user that does not use video game see the difference? What programs would I see the benefit in?
    Thanks!

Installing 3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 will allow you to use up to six monitors. Installing the Radeon 4870 will give you some benefits in certain video/graphic editing programs. If all you do is email, web surfing and non-graphic intensive stuff than the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 is adequate.

  • ATI Radeon 4870 Graphic Card - Minor Problems with Icon View

I have a MacPro 2,1 (early 2007)... Recently upgrade graphic card from ATI Radeon X1900 to ATI Radeon 4870... Works fine, except when viewing files in "icon view"... The icons are "fuzzy-like" some pixels are missing... This is seen in any size icon... small or large... or views no problem... cover view, list view, or column view...Does anyone have a working solution for this problem in icon view... Thanks

If ATi didn't specify the card you bought is designed for your Mac, then it's strictly the PC version and is incompatible with OS X. It may work correctly in Bootcamp for Windows, but not for OS X.
Your best option would be to return the 4350 and purchase a "designed for Mac" video card by ATi or nVidia cards offered on the Apple online store.

  • Is it possible to upgrade ATI radeon HD 2400 XT from 128MB to 512MB?

Hi, I just bought "Tom Clancy's Splinter cell: Conviction" and it doesn't work on my iMac.
Of course I should have checked in depth the details of the requierments because now it appears that my graphic card doesn't support the game.
(I didn't think it would be a problem since I play "COD Warfare" with no lagging or any bug at all)
    I have an iMac 20" - Mid 2007.
Hence my question stated in the title "Is it possible to upgrade ATI radeon HD 2400 XT from 128MB to 512MB?"...
I should add in case of a positive answer: "and how?..."
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you both!
I guess that is pretty much answering my question!...
Next time I buy a game I'll make sure I read THOUROUGHLY the requierments...
    So I don't waste $25.99 for nothing!...
When is someone going to come with an app that tells you right away if you computer support it or not???
    Apple??? The competition??? Who???

  • Television and TV Recording with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB  equip Mac Pro

I have been looking into a Mac Pro 2.66-3.0 Dual-core equipped with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB. One of the things I would like to accomplish is to also use the thing as a television and TV recorder (reliably). I have experience with the a PC equiped with a ATI9700pro all in wonder. I had nothing but problems with the software with hours (weeks) spent trying solve the issues. Turns out this is not an unusual thing with the ATI-Allinwonder. Thought I would check here to see whether anyone has input on how the x1900 works on the mac pro esp as a tv device.

the elgato system is an external tv tuner that connects by USB. It has nothing to do with the graphics card in your mac.
you can connect an antenna, cable, s-video or composite. Some of the models accomodate HDtv now.
the results are clean, and i've had no problems.

  • IMac w/ ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

I'm about to order a new iMac but i have a few questions about the graphics capabilities. I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac. Ideally a MacPro would have been my first choice but im not that rich.
I intend to order an iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB. Will this card handle games pretty well? I play world of warcraft and EVE online.
    Thanks for your input.

only issue here is that EVE for mac has a graphics bug because of driver issues... I dont know if this applies to the ATI iMacs, but it sure affects my Nvidia iMac. And this is a bug that have been present since EVE was released for mac, and Apple are aware of the problem, but has yet to fix it. So if I ever play EVE for more than background playing or in station use, I always restart into bootcamp, to play EVE there...

Thanks for your input. I'm sure this will be helpful for all of us and I will share it with my clan of over 100 people strong.

Where may be a problem? ATI is fully recognized in profiler, but nVidia shows 0 MB VRAM or "No Display Connected"... Please, help...

Pull the 7300GT. I can find an article on Adobe support and FAQ for CS3 and later.
