Just a happy rant

Hi all,
No question here, just a very happy rant. Last week my faithful but old ALPB finally decided to throw in the towel and call it a day after almost 7 years of service. Sad, but also a great excuse to finally upgrade. Being that I'm poor, I couldn't afford new, but I was lucky enough to stumble across a 15" MBP early '08 model still under AppleCare until next year, so I jumped. The machine arrived today, and in anticipation of it's arrival I purchased an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard yesterday. The installation went smoothly, and once I was up and running I was shocked. I was obviously expecting the new machine to be faster than my old PB, but HOLY CRAP!!!!! Completely flabbergasted wouldn't even do justice! In just the fast few hours I've found dozens of things my old PB wouldn't even have tried to do! The speed and ease of which it does tasks that my PB used to struggle with is an amazing delight! It's been 7 years since I've been this thrilled about a Mac, and a long 7 years it's been!
Anywho, I just had to vent my excitement somewhere, and this seemed an appropriate place. I have no Mac using friends, so none would understand my excitement. Any comments or suggestions for someone that just jumped a 7 year gap in Mac technology would be welcome. I've found myself on an unexpected learning curve just from large list of abilities my old PB just couldn't, or wouldn't, perform.
Thanks for listening!

We used to have a MUG here in Traverse City, but I believe that they've stopped meeting as of January due to lack of interest. The group has been reduced to a webpage and online forum.

Where do you go in the community for some positive thoughts and when you are just plain happy with your Mac?
Let me paraphrase a song from South Pacific,
"There is nothing like a Mac,
    Nothing in the world.
You can take your PC back.
There ain't anything like my Mac!!”
I am converted and I love it. First my iPad, then my iPhone and now a proud owner of a Mac. "Who could ask for anything more..."

  • Should I just be happy with SD Sports on YouView?

After several calls to BT call centres I managed to be understood using English, and sports actually works now on YouView (ISP config 29)
Only problem is... I was suppose to get HD free for 12 months... but nope.
Time to give up and just be happy something works?

You get HD yet? I've got squat... although they did refund me £36... saying they will charge me for HD and that is to cover it. At this point I think I'll be happy with a free £36... seems no HD even if you want it

  • I just renewed my plan with verizon and am just not happy

Cliff notes Been with fios for roughly five years dating back to the free 19 inch HD TV promotion After my first two year contract expired I called to renew and was given a even better price. Then the first bill comes and it's not even close to what we agreed on. Called and called because I was not going to accept being completely lied to. At this time period many, many people were here claiming the same thing happened (approx2 yrs ago). All was settled with a 40 dollar "valued customer discount" which lasted one year and dropped to a 20 dollar " valued customer discount". I was happy, didn't mind paying more and loved FIOS.Mind you it took many, many hourson the phone to resolve. Fast forward to about a month ago and being leary about calling in, being told one thing and getting charged another I went online. Was basically bullied into choosing a inferior package from extreme to prime, said I would not lose nfln and MLB network. All he kept asking me was if I had checked out yet, like he was in some hurry, over and over again which was odd. Having two young ones at home and money being tight I was trying to save a buck. Shame on me, I lost many off my favorite channels which I could probably live with however the internet speeds are painfully slow. I can hardly watch videos now it's so bad. Did the chat rep put a gun to my head? No, but being at work and him being rather pushy clouded my judgement on just waiting like I should have. So here I sit, a long time happy customer wearing FIOS underpants left holding the bag with sub par service that I really didn't want. The wife is fuming wanting to switch to xfinity as I tell her I will try and come to some common ground with the big red V. If there are any suggestions or help on what I can do it would be truly appreciated. Mike (certified Verizon kool aid drinker)

  • Just a little rant... :(

    Hello,
Little rant against SAP about the translation of the name of a product...
In "SAP BI" Windows starting menu, for a french installation, when I saw for the 1st time a module called "Mettre à niveau l'outil de gestion", I couldn't help thinking/saying :
I've finally discovered it's "Upgrade Management Tool" !
French is my native language and I can tell you that the french translation is actually ridiculous !
I would suggest : "Outil de gestion de mise à jour"
    Regards,
    Stéphane.

    Bonjour Petit
How about "Mise à niveau l'outil de gestion"
But I think you should raise this on "https://ideas.sap.com/"
If SAP finds this is useful and needs to be rectified they'll surely take a note of this.
    Cheers,

  • Does the 14 day exchange policy cover if I'm just not happy with my new device?

    Hi,
I just used my upgrade to get a Samsung Galaxy S3, and after activating it and only using it for a few hours, I'm already regretting not getting the Iphone s4 instead.  (The galaxy was free, and I think the s4 was .99 cents or something)
The device itself is ok, but it's just too large for me to practically carry around, and it's only going to be more bulky if I put some sort of protective cover on it.  I can't imagine carrying this thing around until I can upgrade again.
Does the 14 day exchange cover this?  When exactly does the 14 days start from?  Is there a re-stocking fee?
    Thanks!

Yes, the 14 day return period covers this. Yes, there is a $35 restocking fee. The 14 days begins the day you make the purchase.

  • I bought iphone just 10 days back and I update OS 4.3.3 as apple said, after that I am facing a battery drain problem and also it turn off automatically while I was talking on phone with friends and family. I  noticed 6 times. look like apple phone *****

I just bought apple i phone 4 10 days back from AT &T Retail outlet, then I set up account on itune and i saw to update the software version and i did it to 4.3.3, after that I am facing  two problem 1) Battery is draining like water and 2) while I was talking on phone with family and friends It turn off automatically, Initially I thought I might made some mistake but afterward I noticed that It happen again and again without I touch anything on screen or at phone. I guess Apple suppose to do something and help the customers, anyway but I am still under 30 days warranty period I am going to return it back and I guess may be there are lot of other options available comparing iphone4. but Lets wait what kind of solutions apple bring to me.

Do you have a question or are you just here to rant?
No matter what the product, there will always be some off the line that are defective. It's a fact of life.
The phone has a 1 year Warranty, not 30 days. I'm sure they'll be happy to replace it for you.
Now, that said, have you bothered to sync the phone to make sure you don't have to come back whining because you got your phone replaced and now you can't find your stuff?

  • Just Got a MacBook Pro. Can Anyone Help?

    Hi;
I was recently bequeathed a 15-inch MacBook Pro from my dad, which I believe was originally purchased sometime in 2006 (it's a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB RAM). I've got a few questions about how to get the Mac up to speed:
1 - I'm currently running Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.8. Which OS can I upgrade to and what's the best way to do it? I just downloaded the OS 10.6.8 combo update and am ready to take the next step.
2 - The battery is dead. In  researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
    Thank you all, as always.

Stay there on 10.6.8, your machine is too dated for the newer OS X versions and will only slow it down and you'll have to dump all the free PPC software currently installed and the Intel ones will require a paid upgrade to work with 10.7+.
It's a 2006 machine, it's 2013 now, that means it's a whopping 7 years old and about to die at any time (they don't last forever and 7 years is GREAT for a laptop) so it makes absolutely no sense to spend any more money on it, just run 10.6.8 until the wheels fall off.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
2 - The battery is dead. In  researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
Plug it into a strong power source and do a #1 SMC Reset, see after a couple of days if it will hold a charge, if not contact Apple and see if you can get a replacement battery. Else look at Other World Computing or MacMall.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If you take the Mac in for a battery, also take the charger as it might be the problem and they like to have it all there to eval.
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
Make sure to have your music backed up on a external drive, then you can simply transfer it to the new Mac.
If you want to use the drive back and forth between the PC, then right click and format it (no data you want to keep) exFAT (not NTFS). Format exFAT on the PC (Windows XP can install it free from Microsoft) this way the drive can be read/write by either Mac or Windows. DO not format exFAT on the Mac, it messes it up.
Under Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts you can create a new account for yourself, leave your Dad's alone (so you can update the software etc) and just use your account and put your music there for setting it up how you like. If you need more drive space, move (copy, then delete the originals) of your Dads data to the external drive and reboot.
Use the Apple menu to log in/out and switch user accounts.
Replace the new blank iTunes Library with the one from the PC into the Music folder and iTunes will take care of the rest.
I know your excited to have a Mac, but quite frankly that's a really old box, and Apple upgrades their OS X versions annually now and kind of forces a faster hardware turnover rate than Windows with it's 10 years of support per OS version, so it's not important to always think you need to stay with the latest OS X version, because sometimes Apple won't allow newer ones to install on some older Macs, despite them still working fine. (like the machines that can't upgrade to 10.8, despite being able to run 10.7)
Some older Mac's Apple allows newer OS X versions to be installed, but it causes some much hardship, slowdowns and shaky behavior that it's best for the computer to be on a earlier OS X version, that's your case with those older processors and graphics.
If you really get hooked on a Mac, then save for a new machine that you can upgrade the OS X version a few times, then stop and just be happy there. Because each time a upgrade occurs, it's a major shock and problems galore, plus having to pay to upgrade all new versions of software.
It's anything but peace and stability on Mac's, unless you tread carefully and slowly.

  • I have just bought Logic studio for my macbook pro, do i need to buy a midi keyboard?

Bascily just wondering if this would be essentail to the purchase i have just made, if not it's no bother. Thanks in advance.

I don't know how someone can purchase a $500 piece of professional MIDI/Audio software and even ask this question.
Of course you need a MIDI keyboard, unless you're going to work with canned loops in which case Garageband would be -more- than enough for you.
In fact, Garageband is a subset of Logic and is capable of producing professional grade output and is a perfect place to start learning about MIDI and Audio.
As a long time Logic user I admit it's difficult to see people using Logic without having a base of knowledge to build upon.
If you're going to use Logic you need to read the manuals and use the online help, there is so much good info there, it will give you an understanding of how Logic works and what it is designed to do.
Logic is not a hand holder, It will not walk you through how to use it, it's not a Mac program per se, you have to know what you're doing to learn Logic effectively. The best way to do this is to read manuals, watch tutorials and come up with a short list of questions that can be answered effectively... in short, intelligent questions.
Random questions of "what's this", "how do I do (fill in the blank)"  can give you an immediate answer but leave you clueless how that answer was arrived at. Knowing how to arrive at your own answers is a key to understanding and using Logic effectively.
Not ranting specifically at you LeGringe... just a general rant to new users who've aquired Logic without much former experience in MIDI/Audio...etc....etc.

  • Is there a way to get a refund if you're not happy with Logic X?

I recently bought Logic X and am just not happy with it. Its not for me and I was hoping that maybe I could just return it. Is there a way to go about this?

    No....
The terms and conditions you agreed to when you bought a license to use Logic Pro X from the App Store do not allow/provide for refunds under such circumstances. Please note the part about you puchasing a license to use Logic Pro X.  This is also why you cannot sell Logic Pro X to another person.... because you didn't buy and own Logic Pro X in the first place... but instead you bought a license to use it... and so you cannot sell it or transfer those rights to another person.
Now, depending on when you bought your license... you could contact Apple themselves and plead your case...For example, if you bought it by mistake a couple of days ago... and didn't intend to do so...  Apple will normally refund your costs... but based on past examples.. if you 'bought' Logic Pro X more than a week ago, you aren't going to get a refund simply because you are "not happy with it".
Bear in mind at all times you are not entitled to a refund because of the terms and conditions under which you purchased the license in the first place...  and so Apple don't have to do anything if they choose not to do so.
Finally, you may also want to read the following.. to understand why posting here is "not contacting Apple directly"

  • Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what amI doing wrong?

Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what am I doing wrong?

It's possible the reason it seems so slow, is that a backup might be in progress - and since it's the first backup everything on the disk is something that Time Machine is backing up and is being transferred across the WiFi at the same time as you're trying to use your Internet. So you're competing with Time Machine data flying across your WiFi along with your internet stuff. So if this is indeed what is happening (look at Time Machine to see if a backup is in progress), either pause the backup to a more convienent time or live with the slowness till the backup is done this first time, and after that you probably will not notice the "competition" on your WiFi. I like to schedule the Time Machine backups to late at night rather than once an hour (the default), but that schedule should be whatever you feel most comfortable with.
There is a handy free utility called "TimeMachine Editor" that you can get from http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/ that lets you create your own customized backup schedule. You can create several schedules to fit your working conditions. I've used it for several years with never a problem. I don't have anything to do with the company - just a happy user.
    Good luck...

  • Just the time to praise Garageband, aint it about time someone did!

Im stopping here to say thanks to APPLE for this great product. Who says these apple discussions have to always be about problems. For those who have mastered it and have put it to use its time i think to praise it. Especially those who are lucky like me who can really abuse it with a Quad loaded with 5 GB RAM.
It has allowed me to create some really nice music and without the effort i would need to do it like on these monster DAW's. Logic Express is not in the playing cards for me for now. If Apple decides to create a Logicband or Garageband 4 with more musical features then ill be just the happier for it.
Im just tipping my cap off to it and want to thank all those who have put up with my questions for the last 3 years.
The only thing thats missing now is Time.

Just good enough and better if you really know what youre doing. You have to be creative with it not have it make the song for you.
GB3, LE, name it. all will turn you off if you are just using it to repeat a musical loop for 30 seconds with a stiff drum beat and a monotonous bass loop added. There are third party loops out there ( AMG) that can be cut and pasted and surpass most of you guitarists out there. But if you can play great guitar then GB3 is IMHO great also. The DAW aint gonna make your song tasty catchy melodic etc if it ***** to begin with.
I am so taken by your post ( KB) because you have spelled it out so nicely.
These technophiliacs spend more time on perfecting the sound quality but more often than not and from what ive listened to the quality of the song is so often overlooked.
That you will always be responsible for and no software will create that for you.
