Just a question concerning the hard drive choices, 7200 rpm or 5200 rpm?

Hi guys, i wanna ask you guys would the 7200 rpm hard drive make a big difference over the std 5200 rpm drive?
Is this only a online store option or can i walk into a macstore and request one with a 7200 rpm drive in? will this take them extra time to setup or should they have stock on hand?
Finally are the drives being used in these models SATA2?
Replies would be greatly appreciated

Not likely as most Apple stores carry only stock configurations so if they don't have a configuration with a 7200 RPM drive already installed, then you buy what they have. You can order custom configurations from the online Apple Store. Some local retailers may be willing to swap a drive for you, but at additional cost that may be more than ordering the custom configuration directly from Apple.
Apple is likely using 3.0 Gb/s drives now since that's pretty much what all the new OEM drives will be. All 3.0 Gb/s drives adhere to the SATA II protocol standards (as do many 1.5 Gb/s drives depending on when they were made.) SATA II just refers to a protocol standard and has nothing specifically to do with the speed of the drive's interface.

  • My G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. My recovery discs seem compromised. HELP

On my G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. I made the 4 recovery discs when it was new. Now restoring it 3 of the recovery discs ran but the 4th disc won't. Can the info on the 4th be found anywhere without having to buy a new set? Or can I buy just one disc?
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
As far as I know, you would have to buy an entire new set.
But, if you can read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook, I have a free solution to install a plain version of W7 by using the product key code on your notebook.
    Here's how to do that...
Download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file from the Microsoft link below.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso 2147483647 X17-58997.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you got the whole 3.xx GB file to download because in rare circumstances, you get a download complete notification but you don't get the whole file to download.
After you download the ISO file you can burn it to a DVD using the ISO file burn option on your DVD burning program, or you can use this tool to transfer the ISO file to a DVD or 4 GB USB flash drive.
The tool will also make the media bootable.

Then go to your notebook's support and driver page for the drivers and available software you need.

  • How do I get rid of myself and other users and just be working from the hard drive?

    Hi all,
I know this sounds odd, but bear with me...
I've just bought a new Macbook pro 10.7.4, as my loved old one died. At the store they tranferred all my old info to the new one, but my problem is this: Now I am a user on my computer and there are options for shared users. That sounds confusing, but on my old computer it was just me using it. No sign in or log in, and when I opened my finder window everything was just there in the one bucket (my hard drive): library, apllications, programs, etc. Now I open my finder window and find duplicates of things in all places( i.e. things on my hard drive are also (or not, maddeningly, such as library) there, and then they are also in users or shared.) It is only ever me using my computer, so I don't need all this extra clutter everywhere, or have to go searching for things in different places. Old system was like opening a drawer and finding all your posessions neatly arranged in there, in the one place. Now i feel as though I walk into a room filled with cupboards and things are in some drawers that are also in others, and duplicated.
I apologise for my long rant, but I had to find a way to explain it!
Basically, I want to get rid of other user or shared options on my mac, and myself as a user, and just have the one system staright off the hard drive, no other log ins, but still obviously retain my permissions (password etc) for making changes or installing. Is this possible?

Well, you're going to have two Library folders - one for yourself and one for the System, but you can delete other users and you can enable automatic log-in for yourself using "Users and Groups" in System Preferences. No need to turn on Sharing or have any other users. You'll still need to make yourself an administrator, of course, but if you delete any other users, you delete their home folders, too.

  • HT4527 I just had to clear the hard drive on my computer - now I want to transfer all the music and pictures from my ipad back onto my computer.  'Sync' doesn't do it.  What do I do?

I had toclear the hard drive of my computer and reinstall Windows 7.  Now I want to transfer all the music and photos from my iPad back onto my computer.  I authorized the computer (it is the ONLY computer authorized on this account - and this is the ONLY account on this iPad).  ITunes then downloaded my purchases...or at least it tried - out of the hundreds of tracks I have purchased, it managed one album that I bought over a year ago and NOTHING else.  So I tried to Sync - since on older versions of iTunes (that were SO MUCH MORE user friendly) that would do the job -transferring things that were only on the iPad onto the computer and vice versa.  It doesn't do that anymore.  So I went from my iPad's summary to the Music tab - the box for Music was not checked but when I checked it said the only thing it could do was erase EVERYTHING from my iPad and replace it with what was on my computer (that ONE album).  What is going on?
Why hasn't iTunes downloaded my other purchases since I authorized the computer? (there are over 3,000 tracks...not 18)
How can I download my iPad to my computer?

-Me again - it also won't upload the few new pictures I have on the computer onto the iPad without deleting all the photos that are already there....

  • HT1923 hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can i remove iTunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space and then just run it from the hard drive. instead of taking space on the mac? even if the mac no longer has enough to accommo

Hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can I remove itunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space?...and then run it from the hard drive instead of the mac, even if the mac no longer has space to accomodate the size of the library?

    Yes.
Copy your music iTunes Library folder to the external drive and change the Advanced settings in iTunes to point to this new location.
Once you're happy with these changes you can delete the same Library from your User account to free up space on the internal drive.

  • I just had to replace the hard drive on my presario cq62 laptop it is less than 2 years old

My hard drive on my Presario CQ62 laptop running windows 7 failed .I replaced it with the exact same one. It rebooted and ran then all of a sudden it will crash and say there is no hard drive. Then I can turn it off again and most often it will reboot windows and work for a while then it will crash again and say there is no hard drive .I used the recovery DVDs I  Made when I first bought this computer. They seemed to install fine what is the deal!!

    Hi,
In this case I would check and reseat (not reset) the HDD first. Most likely due to hardware and the pins may not contact properly.
    Good luck.

  • My iMac has less than 2 years. The hard drive from 1TB just failed. Possible to recover data?

The support store just told me that the hard drive of my IMAC 27" is damaged and the solution is to replace for a new one. Meanwhile, I saw this: "Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011."
I bought my system a couple of months before. Anyone knows if it's the same hard drive?
Another question is. Is it possible to recover recover the data from the damaged drive?
    Best regards

If the hard drive has failed then that data is lost.  That's why you always need to maintain an up to date backup copy of your important files on an external backup hard drive.  Hard drives do fail; being an electro-mechanical device they are the weakest link in any computer.
    Hope this helps

  • Need Help: I want to change the hard drive in MacBookPro

Good day! I have a problem, I want to change the hard drive MacBookPro, but I do not understand how to make recovery disks of the existing system. The system of Mac OS Leopard 10.6.8.

You do not need to make a recovery disc, you just need to clone the hard drive that is currently in your mac to the new hard drive.  What you need to do is purchase an external enclosure for the new hard drive, plug it into the usb port and run a cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper!  Then put the new drive in the mac.

  • How to reset the hard drive

My computer gets stuck on the white screen so i've given up and just want to reset the hard drive, what key combination would do this without me getting into the operating system because if i could do that i wouldn't be asking this

    well i tried that...
Is that "that" you booted from your installer dvd and ran Disk Utility to repair/verify your boot drive (not repari permissions)?
I don't no what to tell you.   It's up to you to decide to do an update install and then the 10.6.8 combo updater back to 10.6.8 plus all the updates to it.  You do it at your own peril with no backups.
    Two more experiments to try.
    1. Do smc and pram reset.   See if that is sufficient.
    2. See if you can boot in safe mode.
(and for me it's bed time)

  • Just bought a 2tb external hard drive with the intention of moving my iPhoto data files on it. I have so much of my 500 gigs being used up by images and video. Questions: Will this foul up my iPhoto app? Do I need to point iPhoto to this new location?

Do I need to point iPhoto to this new location?
    Thanks!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Mac book is  starting up funny. I have a flashing folder and question mark or just a grey screen. IT at university is backed up all week and said it's the hard drive! Ugh need help in class now will be calling ASAP! Help please.

I get either a grey screen or a flashing folder question mark. IT at my university said it wouldn't be till after the weekend and than still a few days to get it fixed so she told me to try to back it up myself because that's the only sure fire way to ensure I get all my Info. So any hints or help? They did a hardware test and they think it's my hard drive. I did a r+command restart
And it won't let me verify the disk.... Or download mountain lion.. Okay I know I sound clueless but can anyone help me?

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My mac book pro does not start but has error message with a question mark on screen. took it in and was told probably the hard drive as could not reconize it so bought new one but still not connecting.what do i do

My mac book pro does not connect but shows an error message with a question mark on the screen.I took it to a retailer that said it was not reconizing the hard drive. He said i needed a new hard drive but it may be something else as well but he was sure a new hard drive would fix it.So putting faith in someone who deals with them i purchased a new hard drive to find it was still not working although he said the computer did know reconize the hard drive and i may have to send it away to get it checked .After already paying 120 pounds for a new hard drive and they wanting another 80.00 pounds to diagnose it i am a little sceptical.
That's why i am interested on anyone's help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
