Just a SLEW of Problems

I have the original MacBook Pro from 2006. It's the 15.4" Model and has a 2.16GHz Processor. It's almost three years old and I am having a slew of problems. I do have AppleCare, and I intend to take it to my local Apple Store this week. I just like going in with an idea of what can be done.
Here are my problems (please note, these are consistent over multiple reinstalls of Mac OS X)...
On the keyboard, sometimes the 9, 0, O, and P keys will not work. To fix this problem, I have to restart.
There is a large gap between the lower part of the casing and the plastic strip on the front left portion of my laptop.
The very right portion of my display is sometimes dimmer than the rest of the display. This display has already been replaced once.
The batter quickly drains to 20%, if I plug in the charger it will charge quickly back to 100%. If I close the lid when it is between 10% and 20% and then reopen it right away, it is at 0%. I have tried to recondition the battery using Apples steps and others multiple times. The problem persists.
My charger light turns green after about 15 minutes, despite the fact that it is still charging.
My wireless network connection is dropped if my battery drops below 20%. I have to plug in to power and restart to get it working.
I baby this machine, and these problems have been slowing getting worse over the past few months. Any suggestions as to what needs to be done? Will Apple fix them all?
Thanks.

Sounds like you're having tons of fun!
I have the same Macbook Pro you have (year, size, processor, etc.) and I've run into a few problems myself. Your issues aren't horrible, so don't be discouraged.
Depending on how you type, the keys on your keyboard can be pretty sensitive. The connection between the physical key you touch and the sensor that detects the "press" of your finger is sensitive. It's kind of like an old television remote that has a button you have to press really hard to work. The more you use it, the more life you use. Since you have to restart for them to work, I'd say it's an issue with your Mac processing the information that your keys send and that kind of issue is usually easily fixed. Take that problem to any decent computer store and they'll most likely fix it for free.
With the large gap problem, are you saying that there is a gap between the aluminum casing and plastic strip? If that's the case, did you once drop it? I can't imagine you would have recieved your MBP with a warped casing. If it's sticking up like a cliff edge, it sounds like something has gone loose and isn't holding things tightly together anymore. If you're talking about when you close your laptop, that's simply a design flaw with the mechanism that clamps the halfs together. It's bound to losen up overtime and keep things from staying tight. But I'm sure there's an easy way to fit the aluminum closer to the plastic since the aluminum is more malible.
Your display issue sounds like there's an overall energy issue within the computer. I say that simply because if you've had your display replaced once already, it's probably not your display. It seems more like the energy being produced throughout your display isn't being properly displaced.
If you havn't replaced your battery yet, you should. If you're battery is draining quickly, it can't hold a steady charge. It's similar to a car battery; you can recharge it but if it's old and worn past it's lifetime, it won't hold the charge it used to be able to. I also keep my battery cycled like Apple instructs you, but considering how much heat the Macbook Pro's produce, your battery's life will inevitably take a toll. I have a similar issue where my battery will turn my screen off and sleep at 45%, but once I put the charger in it changes to read 0%. This is more of a registration issue and it's the computer slowing down on other processes as it loses energy.
Your wireless signal takes up a bit of your battery's energy, so check how you have your energy settings. If you have it on Better Energy Savings your Mac might just be trying to save you energy. It's like your Bluetooth; if it's on it takes up energy even if you aren't using it. Granted, you shouldn't be losing your internet connection ever but I'd say a new battery will get rid you of this problem.
I care a lot for my Mac too, but problems are innevitable. All of your problems sound fixable and inexpensive and I'd take your Mac to Apple to get a tune up. Any genius bar should help you out. Even a decent computer store could help. I hope this helps!

I have Windows 7 and just recently experienced a problem with itunes freezing up when I clicked on the "apps" tab which shows the apps that are loaded on my phone.  Everything else in the itunes software seems to be working okay.  The problem is in the part where you sync the newly purchased apps.  The apps will all be blank that are downloaded and that part of the software crashes itunes or freezes up.  I can get out of itunes okay after the freeze up, but it just stops me from syncing anything that I have newly added.  If anyone has had this problem before or knows someone that has, please let me know how I can fix it.  I have uninstalled and reloaded itunes 4 or 5 times, but the problem is still there.  I might add that I have been using itunes and purchasing apps for 2 to 3 years without any problems.  HELP.

You would get better response from the iTunes community forum.
    Have a nice day!

Oh wow, looks like a new feature.
The "page" links in a stylesheet with the address "resource://gre/res/TopLevelImageDocument.css". If you remove that reference, then the image displays in the old style.
'''''Edit: Please skip the rest of this post and check out the next one.'''''
There might be a more elegant solution than that, but you could use a bookmarklet to strip out that link when you want to view the page in its old style. A bookmarklet is a snippet of JavaScript you save on the Bookmarks toolbar for quick access.
First, copy the following code to the clipboard (it's all one long line):
    <br>javascript:var ssheet=document.querySelector('link[href="resource://gre/res/TopLevelImageDocument.css"]'); if(ssheet)ssheet.parentNode.removeChild(ssheet); void 0;
Next, if you are not displaying the Bookmarks Toolbar, use View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar to display it. (If you aren't using the classic Menu bar, press Alt+v to call up the old View menu. Right-clicking the gray area just below the page address also allows you to display the Bookmarks Toolbar.)
Right-click on the Bookmarks Toolbar (or Mac equivalent of right-click!) and choose New Bookmark.
Paste the code into the Location box (the second box).
Then type a useful name in the Name box (e.g., Oldstyle Picture) and click Add.
Now, when you want to tweak the image display, click the button to run the script.
Manual clicking is a hassle, so it might make sense to look into other solutions. (Greasemonkey didn't seem to work; I think it might not run on .jpg files.)

  • This is just to report a problem with Apple updates. I updated recently and the computer brought up my 2012 desktop with all my 2014 files and data including stickies missing! Now I hesitate to do another Apple update. What would you do?

Apple Updates: This is just to report a problem. I updated recently and on restart the computer restored up my 2012 desktop with all my 2014 files and data including stickies missing!!! Now I hesitate to do another Apple update. What would you do?

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.
If files are present, but seem outdated
You may have started up from a different volume (disk.) Open the Startup Disk preference pane and check the selection.

  • IPod classic issues with iTunes 9 just may be disk problems in ipod

I have done extensive testing for several days now on this iTunes 9 issue with iPod Classics. I used 3 different computers, 1 Macbook Pro, Windows 7 and XP with iTunes 8. I had 2 - ipod classic 80GB and 2 - ipod 5th Generation 30GB units people gave me to look at.
It would take too much typing to describe all the restores, syncs, formats, copies I did over the past few days.
Bottom line: Using PC utilities I began to believe the iPod hard drives had bad sectors. I trusted the disk testing because I got different results from different ipods. The problems I experienced and what I have read here are consistent with what you would expect from disk problems and S.M.A.R.T. technology on the drives.
If bad sectors on a drive are dealt with by S.M.A.R.T. I would expect delays in accessing those sectors to occur.. resulting in delays to restore, delays to sync, delays to even skip songs on the ipod itself.
What may be the case is switching to iTunes 9, discovers when it trys to use the bad sectors. Maybe iTunes 9 is more timing temperamental. I have iPods that pass all disk tests that work fine with iTunes 9 on mac and PC. The other 2 ipods reporting bad sectors on a disk test, can restore, but syncing 3000+ songs is nearly impossible. Sync delays were consistent with where I would expect bad sectors to exist in the process. Delays I noticed just copying a folder to the ipod in disk mode were consistent with the delays that occur syncing in iTunes.

    It is a possibility...
I will state though that in my opinion the main problem is that itunes 9 is far less fault tolerant than prior versions and is far more likely to preemptively send an ipod into recovery mode when running into a problem when a ipod is plugged in.
I'd had a couple of incidents in prior versions of itunes when it flashed an alert message that it was having trouble accessing the ipod. Usually unplugging and reconnecting the ipod resolved the issue. Unfortunately this system of handling the issue does not work at all with itunes 9. What happens is that the next time you plug in the ipod it is preemptively sent into recovery mode.
I've had my ipod sent into recovery mode 7-8 times since I Installed Itunes 9. The last 5 of those in the last week. I've already done the reinstall itunes 9 from scratch and I still had to do a recovery of the ipod last night. Today I bought a new interface cable on the theory that my old cable might be defective. I've been able to plug it in tonight without itunes complaining about being unable to access the ipod

  • A Slew of Problems...Where to Begin?

I'm hoping the following issues are all related so here goes...
I recently got an iPhone 4 (had to replace a 3Gs after it got wet) and after restoring and syncing from a backed up iTunes file:
*Issue 1*). When I launch the phone's email app I get a succession of error messages (I have about 5 different accounts from two carriers -- AT&T and Earthlink) saying "CANNOT GET MAIL -- No password provided for "AT&T___. Please go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password."
I don't seem to have a problem with the Earthlink account, just the AT&T one.
Well. I've re-input the password NUMEROUS times but it doesn't seem to hold.
*Issue 2)*. When I sync my iPhone to my Mac, none of the changes made on the iphone make it to Mac apps for example iCal -- I've scheduled several appointments which show up on the phone, but after syncing, they don't appear when I launch iCal on the Mac. Furthermore, I switched the colors of the Calendars e.g. Home (green), Work (Blue) -- but on the iPhone they are the [original] opposites.
*Issue 3*). I noticed that when I launch my phone's email program and it fetches for new data/emails, the Updated date below says October 31st (today is November 10th). I've checked all the areas where the date would be set and everything seems normal. NOTE: I just "re-scanned" again while typing this and the message now says "Getting 71 of 71 emails"...!!)...and now the date is current! Although I can see duplicate emails now.
I can get through the email issues at the moment, it's the non-syncing of iCal that's driving me nuts. Thanks!
    iPhone 4.1/iTunes 10

There may have been a problem with your iPhone 3GS backup or in regards to some of the data that was included with the backup. Email account settings are included with the backup. If so, transferring the backup to a new iPhone or restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup will also transfer or restore the problem.
Try deleting and manually recreating the email account on your iPhone with the problem.
Regarding the calendar events syncing problem, try resetting the sync history on your Mac which is done via iSync preferences with the iSync application located in your Applications folder.

As you can see, there are many problems here. Quicktime is apprently unavailable, when it's installed. iTunes doesn't recognize me as an administrator, when the account is indeed an admin (and can perform administrative actions).
Connection to the iTunes store is unsuccessful, when iTunes is enabled in the windows firewall. All the services iTunes needs to run, are running successfully. The sole exception being Bonjour, which iTunes doesn't seem to realize is running. I've verified the service to be running, and have restarted it. Additionally, mDNSresponder.exe is not running under task manager. Manually starting it from Bonjour's file directory doesn't work, either. I've changed my "hosts" file, and still no luck. I've also changed a couple of Internet Explorer internet properties, and the unsuccessful connectivity doesn't change. I've reinstalled the whole line of Apple software, without a change in results. Reboots are just as unsuccessful.
Ultimately, my problem is neither iTunes nor Windows recognizes my iPod Touch, whereas my old Nano used to work fine. On other computers, iTunes is fine. The problem is on this one, and whether it's an Apple or Windows problem, I don't know. Hopefully someone here can help me out, as I would be immensely appreciative.

    One step forward?
I'd like to doublecheck something you mentioned earlier:
I've verified the service to be running, and have restarted it. Additionally, mDNSresponder.exe is not running under task manager.
When you were in the processes tab, did you have "Show processes from all users" checked, as per the following screenshot? (mDNSresponder.exe runs under SYSTEM, so you don't see it in there unless that box is checked.)

  • Just installed 7.02 and only get itunes icon and usb cord. If I connect to itunes as requested, will I lose all my photos ?  7 installed just fine, why the problem with 7.02 ?

Just installed 7.02 and only get itunes icon and usb cord.  Why should I have to connect to itunes ?  If I do, will I lose all of my photos ?  Shouldn't I get free service for their software problem ?

You don't have to update to 7.02 if you don't want to, though this update does fix a few glitches in 7.0.
Before updating, you should always back up your data - it's standard practice. I've never lost pictures in an iTunes update.
Perhaps you could elaborate on the comment, "Just installed 7.02 and only got itunes icon and usb cord." What problem are you having, exactly.
Your next question confuses me. "Shouldn't I get free service for their software problem ?." What free service were you looking for? You can always go to your local Apple store for help, or ask questions here for free.

  • Hello again Just wondering if the problems with Vid(ATI) drivers still

Hello I haven't been here in a while, I did an Arch Linux install a few months back and it was quite the learning experience for someone like me being a noob . I loved Arch( I was using 64bit) but the only thing that made me leave it was because after several tries I never could get the ATI VId drivers to install properly for my ATI 3870hd video card I could'nt do any serious gaming which suckedso I ended up uninstalling Arch. I did stay with Linux and stayed away from the MS OS's and now I am back and wondering if the installation problem is still there. I am using Ubuntu Hardy right now and although it is a good OS I really prefer Arch but like I said I just want to know if I am going to have the same problems with the Video Drivers as I did the last time. which I could never figure out because I did have duel boot 64bit ARCH and 64bit, Ubuntu but with Ubuntu all I needed to do was  go into the system/administration/hardware drivers and check( turn on) the ATI accelerated hardware drivers I had no problems since.
I just realised that my single simple question turned into a short story so I will post this and hope that my problem with the Driver installs are solved so I can reinstall Arch with out any huge problems when I want to game

  • Just upgraded to Lion, problem now syncing contacts onto Blackberry using Desktop Manager

I just upgraded to Lion, got iCloud going.  Works great with my iPhone, but my husbands Blackberry no longer syncs properly using the Blackberry Desktop Manager.  Installed the latest version of that program & still no luck.  The calendar, music and photos sync fine, but all of the contacts have been wiped out now on the phone and not a single one will sync over from the mac.

I have the same problem.  I've tried many solutions but no success.  ICloud has been a curse.  I love my Mac but if I can't sync my BB 9930, I may have to change.

  • Just upgraded... problem!

New user here. I just tried upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. However, I remember reading about the troubles that people have had once upgrading. So I cancel about halfway through. This is where my troubles begin. When I cancelled, my computer froze so I did ctrlaltdelete. Now, when I tried opening iTunes, it said "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes." So do I need to uninstall iTunes and iTunesSetup completely from my computer and reinstall? If I do, will I lose all the music I have on my iPod presently when I connect it to my iTunes?

    nevermind. problem solved.

  • I bought and was charged for some music.  It is not in check for available downloads or my purchased file.  However it shows up in recent purchases.  I just recovered from a problem and had to uninstall and reinstall.  Where could this purchase be?

I bought and was charged for some music.  It is not in check for available downloads or the purchased file.  It does show up on my view my account recent purchases.  Where could this music be?  I recently recovered from an iTunes problem and had to uninstall and reinstall and finally manged to get everything back to work.  Except for this most recent purchase which just happens to be my son's band so I would really like to have it.

I just started having problems viewing youtube videos.  Other videos on other sites appear to be working.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank You.

A friend recommended this and surprisingly I could watch the videos so apparently my issue is a Flash problem.
    Try this test:
Try this, www.youtube.com/html5 and click 'Join the html5 trial' and see if you can watch videos then. If you can, it's a flash issue. If not, I have no idea.
If it's flash, I would upgrade FF to 5.0. I believe it uses built in flash, much like Chrome does.
