Just a speed question

Hi All
My Broadband provider says that I am on a 2meg link.
My question is, how can I check this as I am getting download speeds of upto 225kB/s this morning. Seems fast for 2meg. not complaining just wondering....
Washac

If you Google "bandwidth speed test" you'll find any number of sites for giving you an estimate. The ones I'v looked at are usually within 5 to 10% of each other, which is pretty consistient. I primarily use Bandwidth Place Speed Test.
ISP's bandwidth rate depends on how many other users are on your network node switch at a particular time. The ISP's "2 meg link" would be their nominal value; if most of your nearby users of the same ISP are asleep, out of town, or failed to pay their electric bills, you'll have the bandwidth of that node switch to yourself (until they wake up and the bandwidth rate drops again).
Also, at least in this area, cable and DSL providers are trying to one-up each other in offering higher bandwidth rates as a lure for new subscribers, pushing the effective bandwidth higher. They usually seem to to that in reverse: they'll improve their hardware to get higher rates first, then they announce the improvement (causes fewer complaints that way, I'm sure). In the past few years, the bandwidth rate I'll usually see at home on a cable modem has gone from around 800 kbps to 2.5 Mbps

  • Just a technical question

    Hi,
I'm not a developer but I wanted to ask here since I presume there're a lot more tech savvy people that could possibly give me a proper answer to just one small question regarding behavior of Mac OS X using the following example: at some moment I suddenly discovered that the Trackpad option which allows for search through the English Dictionary (Thesaurus, etc) tapping a highlighted word with three fingers no longer worked as before: when I tapped nothing happened or other word was "processed" in what seemed to me to be a chaotic order. I reset PRAM and its normal functioning returned. What exactly happened with the system that it started act incorrectly until the PRAM reset? I remember though that some days ago (before I discovered the issue) I did one more SMC and PRAM reset and performing the latter I released the combination of keys after the third chime. I then thought that it was too much so I repeated the operation exactly as recommended. Could the repetitive reset of PRAM be the reason and kind of shock to the OS?
Would be happy to hear your opinions
    Have a nice day

Are you sure you haven;t turn it off in System Preferences->TrackPad;Point & Click?

Whenever I ask Siri a question it just links me to a website instead of just saying the answer.  The reason I ask Siri is because i am not in a position to look at my phone.  How can I get Siri to just answer my questions??

I found that the only time Siri will read anything to you is if it finds a Wikipedia article. Siri will let you know it found that, and ask if you want it to be read out loud. Other than that you will hear the "I found this, take a look".
The only other thing you can do is activate "Speak Screen". It will involve you taking a look at your phone for a moment, selecting what you'd like to look at, but Siri will read the content to you. It's in Settings > General > Accessibility.  Once activated, all you have to do is slide two fingers from the top of the screen and you will have it read to you. I use it all the time because of my astigmatism. It's pretty useful.

  • Just a quick question regards my mobo..

I might possibly bricked my motherboard which I already ask a while back,, just a quick question,,, Now I did hooked up the powersupply to the motherboard alone,,, no other components,,, just the PSU and motherboard,,, then I use a paperclip to put static force on the motherboard's power button ( where powercables on the case should suppose to be in ),,, now the motherboard just keeps on blinking as my problem b4,, so its really the motherboard right??? I just want to confirm that the motherboard is the problem and no other components... thnks

  • Hi guys. Just a quick question. My wife has a Mac Book Pro and when she is browsing the web she can use a two fingered gesture to go back to her previous page (by swiping from right to left). Is there any way to set that up on my iPad Mini. Many thanks.

Not in the Safari browser she can't. That is not supported on the iPad. There are other mobile browsers that do have that functionality - one is iCab Mobile.

Mine was bought last year and they were not; it they don't say "rechargeable". they're not. I started to use rechargeable as soon as the original batteries died.

Are you the same poster as Raphaex who posted using Windows 8.1 in this thread and provided a full and detailed set of data accessible using the "More System Details" link: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1011435 ??
If not, could you provide a link to the earlier discussion on your situation if there is one? I don't want to repeat what you haven't found helpful, and also, it's critical to know your correct configuration information and not waste everyone's time typing out advice that is totally irrelevant.
To provide the missing details on your configuration:
    # Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
#* Click the "3-bar" menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click on help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''.
#* Type '''about:support''' into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
    # In the top left corner of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
#Now, come back to this thread, right-click in the reply box and select '''Paste''' from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press Command+v) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
Usually, this does not contain personal information, but I suggest you skim down and make sure you do not see your email address in there (XX it out ).

People say its suposed to be around 6db so why is my speed so low?
It used to be 77mb last week. Does the speed reduce by how many customers are on the cabinet? We just got the FTTC installed so lots of people are buying it just now.

If you use this checker it will tell what cabinet you are on and what services it can receive. post back here editing out your phone number

  • Just a dummy question

Please , help me get through the following:
In the licensing manner do I need to be on Oracle Enterprise Edition to use the Tuning Pack? when you're on standard Edition?
    My answer is no.
But my boss insist if I'm sure, that's why I need other eyes to confim my assertion.
    Thanks enough

    Hi Justin,
Plz excuse me if I am wrong, but aren't there command
line scripts designed to be run from within sqlplus
that provide the same reports as using the AWR (GUI)
interface? Such as awrrpt.sql, awrinfo.sql, and
ashrpt.sql? Are these restricted only for use with
EE, or can they be used (legally) with SE?As has been made clear, you touch it, you buy it. And they are watching.
I haven't tried the scripts, but if you google for oracle s-ash [correction: "s-ash" with the quotes] there is a very interesting simulated ash which doesn't violate anything as far as I know.
    >
As for the comment regarding buying a car and not
being able to exceed certain speeds: T his is
becoming more popular, even with hardware. Some
vendors (such as HP) will sell you a server loaded
with CPUs, but you are only allowed to configure the
number of CPUs that you purchased and pay support on.Heck, even some cars are sold for different prices. A few years ago, certain cars were made from the same parts on the same assembly line by the same people (just minor interior fabric differences and stinking badges), and people were convinced the Toyotas were better than the Chevrolets.
Now the licensing is sometimes based on sockets, not whether there is anything in the sockets!
Ask a dummy question, the answer may be insane.

  • New user - Guess what, I have speed questions!

So, Inifinity went in yesterday as planned. All good there.
Initially the engineer showed me that the line was rated at 37 meg and upload of around 10 meg, which is all good.
However, running tests on Speedtest.net over the wireless show that I'm getting around 2meg down and 8meg up. The up is of course good, but the 2meg down seems a bit, ropey! Continued tests throughout the day on wired and wireless showed this to be consistent.
One thing the engineer told me to do was: "Just before you go to bed, shut down the router and the modem and then repower them" I thought this made sense as he should know what he's talking about. So I did this thinking it would resolve my issues. However, having read through the forums last night, after I powered off the kit, it seems that could have been a mistake.
So testing this morning, on speedtest.net it shows at 12meg down and 7meg up over a wired connection and the same again over a wireless connection.
However, when I use BT Speedtest I get the following:
    > Download speedachieved during the test was - 32657 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-37132 Kbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -37132 Kbps
    2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
    Upload Speed
    8140 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    10000 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
    >Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8140 Kbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps
When you compare this to a real world test (Download the lastest version of Ubuntu for example) I get just 300k download speed.
So my questions are as follows!
    - Why does BT speed test rate that much higher than anything else?
    - What should I believe in terms of speed?
    - Why are my actual downloads so much slower than they were with Be Internet which was a copper based service
    - Has turning my modem off caused an issue?

That router is a cable router, it doesn't have a modem built in. The downloads are from HTTP and FTP, I'm testing using major sites like Microsoft, Apple, Ubuntu and various other sites where I've seen big speeds from before.
These are the tests I've done, all from a wired connection direct to the Home Hub
http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ gives me results of 7.3 down and 7.0 up
    http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ gave 7.5 down and 8 up
    http://www.thinkbroadband.com gave 1.5 down!! and 6.5 up
    http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ gave 6.5 down and 7.8 up
    http://www.speedtest.net/ gave 5.9 down and 8.10 up
    Meanwhile BT.speedtest gave the following:
    1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download Speed
    29690 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    37132 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
    > Download speedachieved during the test was - 29690 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-37132 Kbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -37132 Kbps
    2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
    Upload Speed
    8153 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    10000 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
    >Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8153 Kbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps
So, to me there seems to be something odd. All the other tests are in the same sort of ball park, which would tally with the 500k downloads I'm seeing from the 'real world' tests I've been running.

  • Huge Library Speed Question

I switched my Dad to Mac and also to Aperture. After importing all his photos it ended up being nearly 180,000 photos.
Aperture does now take about a minute and a half to boot, but once up it runs **** smooth.
My question is whether there is a way to speed up the bootup. He already has enough RAM, but I was wondering if there are any settings that could help the bootup time.
P.s. Just in case you were wondering, all the photos are of the grandchildren. None of us take any photos because he takes plenty!

Fire up Activity Monitor next time you launch Aperture to get a better idea what the laggard is. It is probably disk I/O. Make sure you vacuum the Aperture database infrequently, but especially after some large migration. If it is disk I/O, you'll likely need to align Aperture with a higher performance storage setup to increase speed...or just put up with the wait until the RAM caches.
Still, with that much RAM I guess we're talking about launching Aperture only about once a month since I typically just sleep my Mac Pro and uptime is usually over a month between reboots.
