Just added a new hard drive

I've just installed a new internal hard drive into my pre-late 2008 Macbook Pro (silver keys, superdrive in the front). After turning my machine on, went to disk utility to erase the disk and now I have a spinning beach ball. It's been spinning for about 20 mins. Turn on and off or just wait?

Depending on how long its been spinning you may want to wait. But if its been going for 1 hr+, just restart and try again.
Hope this helps,

  • I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program.

I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.
It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer. No good.
    Anyone?

Thats correct. I can see it in the list however when I attempt to erase it or partition it it's like it's not being found or recognised and it throws up the input/output error message. I am pretty sure that the sensor it attached correctly and it is a SATA drive. I can see all the infor regarding the drive when disk utility is open and it all looks good but I cant access it or do anything with it. It's taunting me!
The install disk is in the drive and the install program runs right up to the point where you have to select the location for the install and there is just nothing in the box where you have to select the hard drive icon.
I have my suspiscions about the drive but any help would be appreciated.

  • I just had a new hard drive installed on my iMac

i just had a new hard drive installed on my iMac (due to the Seagate replacement program) i was able to migrate my back up(i think) but its now acting like a new computer and i can't get past the registration screen. I filled everything out but the "continue" button won't highlight and let me cxontinue.

Ah the mac wants to play games..
Ok, You should be able to click on continue twice so to skip it.
What version is the OS you restored? Or did you just perform Migration Assistant on it?

  • I just got a new hard drive, iCloud only remembered a handful of my music...

I just got a new hard drive, iCloud only remembered a handful of my music and, I don't know how to get the music from my iPhone back into my iTunes library. I want to put new music onto my phone and, I want to make some new playlists and edit some mistakes I found on the songs on my iPhone.
Please help? I am practically in tears here; I am a part-time DJ and do not need this kind of stress.
I do not want to hear that my iPhone is not a back-up device; I just want my iTunes library and the iTunes on my phone to have all the same music so that I can make playlists with everything and such.

So as a part time DJ, your music is not important enough to back up?
    I do not want to hear that my iPhone is not a back-up device;
    It’s not.
Bad hard drives (and important info) are two reasons you back up your computer regularly.
You do back up your computer regularly, correct?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

  • I just got a new hard drive and would like to find my "favorites" from a previous Firefox.

I just got a new hard drive and had to re start Firefox but cannot find my Favorites. Are they stored somewhere that I can locate them?

First, let's call them Bookmarks. :-)
Do you have your old hard drive connected, or a backup of it? Your Firefox bookmarks are stored in a personal settings folder known as your Firefox profile folder. The location varies depending on whether you had Windows XP or Windows Vista/7 on the old hard drive.
    XP - C:\Documents and Settings\''username''\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    Vista/7 - C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Your first profile folder names contain random letter/numbers then -default, but you might find multiple profile folders. In that case, the most recently updated probably is the one you want. Look inside for a folder named bookmarkbackups.
Let's assume you got that far and you have a number of dated files with a .json extension. You can restore those backups to your new Firefox. This article describes how (you will use the Choose File... option to get at that old file): [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
    Any luck?

I have about 300 songs missing anyway to update the folder to add the missing songs?
If you know the location and you have all the songs in there, you could try the below:
    For iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library
    For iTunes 8:
Choose File > Library > Consolidate Library
    For iTunes 7 or earlier:
    Choose Advanced > Consolidate Library.
    A message will pop up.
    For iTunes 9:
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
    For iTunes 8 and earlier:
    Click Consolidate.
This action copies all of your music and other media files to the new location.

  • I just had a new hard drive put in at the AppleStore.  When I looked at the icon, I noticed that it was named snow08.  Is that normal - or do I have someone else's hard drive?

Is that odd?  Do I have someone else's hard drive?

I think apple named your drive snow08. I really don't think they would replace your drive without the new one completly erased, that would be pretty sloppy of them. I guess they could have, i just do not think they would have!

You need at least 10.6.7 installed. If that's the case, since you didn't indicate anything, update to 10.6.8, launch the App Store.app in /Applications, and click on the Redeem link.

  • Time machine restore-just got a new hard drive, used migration assistant to restore to time machine but cannot find files.

Sounds like i have a similar story to another user out there.  5 year old dropped my computer and hard drive was gone.
I just got a new hard drive and used Go-utilities-migration assistant to restore with time machine-- it
took several hours and seemed to be doing ok, but when done none of the files/photos/ect are available?
I did however find a back up on my Time machine labeled "sparse bundle"?
How do i get my files restored on my computer? Thanks!

    Try restoring the specific files.

  • Adding A New Hard Drive

I've been thinking about adding a second hard drive.  The problem is that I'm not sure which configuration would best fit my needs.
Currently I have one 120GB Maxtor SATA drive which, after six months, is half full.  This leads me to conclude that eventually I'm going to fill it up.
Since I have only this one drive and no DVD writer, I don't have any good way of backing up my drive in case something fails.  I don't have any vital data, but I've spent a long time getting my settings perfect, and I don't want to lose them.
I also know that doing a RAID doesn't give me more space.  I know that RAID 0 basically uses two drives in parallel to double the storage efficiency, but if one drive fails, all the data on both is lost.  I also know that RAID 1 copies all changes to the second hard drive and thus also does not increase my overall storage space.
What are my other options?  If I buy another SATA drive, what ways do I have to copy my entire disk onto the new one?  How does XP handle installation on the new drive?  How do I switch between drives?  I was thinking that I could put all my large music and video files on the new drive and then optimize my old drive for my games.  This will still make it possible for me to listen to my music in Winamp while playing a game, right?
How do I install the new drive?  Do I have to go into my BIOS and configure something?  Here's what it says about my IDE setup (I don't know what IDE means either.)
    Primary IDE Master = DVD-ROM
Primary IDE Slave = CD - RW
    Secondary IDE Master = n/a
    Secondary IDE Slave = n/a
Third IDE Master = Maxtor HDD
    Third IDE Master = n/a
    etc.
What does Master/Slave mean as far as usage and performance goes?  Which SATA plug should I use for the new drive?
Sorry for the silly questions, I've never used a machine with more than one hard drive before.
EDIT:  What brand hard disk do you guys recommend?  I have in mind either Western Digital or Seagate.  I won't have any compatibility or performance issues from using two drives of different make and capacity, will I?
    Here's my specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 2.8e HTT @ 3.26GHz
Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler
    MSI 865PE Neo2-PFISR motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
2x512MB OCZ PC3700 Gold Edition Rev 3 Dual Channel Enhanced Latency DDR @ 466MHz (2-3-3-5)
    Built-by-ATI Radeon 9800 Pro @ XT 128MB DDR 256-bit @ 415/744 (Catalyst 4.12)
Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Revision 3
    Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum

    Enermax Noisetaker EG475P 470W PSU(+3.3V = 34A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 33A)

    Windows XP Pro SP2

Hi.  I will try to help with some of your questions.  Its easy but time consuming to move/copy files from one hard drive to another.  Just drag the files/folders from one drive to the other one.  That moves them.  To copy them Select them and the select copy then go to the other drive and select paste.  With two hard drives its best to set them up as one for system files and apps (your c drive) and one for storage (your D drive).  Your optical drives then become e and f.  If your case you would leave your current drive as C and the new drive would become your d storage drive.  Moving your mp3s, vids, etc (i.e, non-system files or not apps), could take some hours, but that is usually no problem because you can do small numbers of files at a time or do it overnight.  By the way you never want to fill up your hard drive, especially your c drive.  Always leave 20+ percent free so you can get quick reading/writing to it.  Mp3's, vids, pix etc play just fine from your stoage drive and your games play great from the c drive.  And you can do both at the same time.
Masters and slaves have the same performance but that only applies to IDE drives.  There is no master/slave designation for SATA drives.
Backing up your system files can then be done on your storage drive, but as harib said you can back up the important system files to a CD.  Windows provides a backup utility for that.  You can also back them up to your storage drive if you want.
If you truly want backups of ALL of your files, including storage, is simply a matter of adding another drive and then copying all of the files to the new drive.  Hopefully you would never have both those two drives go bad at the same time.
Western Digital, Maxtor and Seagate are all good drives.  You first must decide if your new drive will be SATA or IDE.  You might just get another SATA drive for storage, but a lower cost IDE drive of similar capacity for your storage drive likely will be just as fast for for mp3s,etc.  SATA really helps on your system drive which you already have.
Installation of drives is a bit more complicated with SATA drives in the sytem but can be relatively easy to do once you decide what drive to get.  Don't base your purchase decision on installationo ease.
When you are about ready to install come back to the forum with specific details of what you want to install and someone will be happy to talk you through the process.
    Good luck!

  • HT201250 I just had a new hard drive installed in my iMac.  Migration manager cannot see my external Time Machine hard drive to restore the files and applications.  The drive is operational in Finder

I cannot seem to migrate the full time machine backup from an external hard drive back to the new hard drive.  Finder sees the drive and files.  When I use Migration managers, it only sees the computer hard drive after I select the time machine option to restore the files.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
With what OS X version did you make the backup? If it was the same as the version you are using now, you don't have to use Migration Assistant to restore the backup. Instead, there's a safer and better method, but you will lose all the changes you have made since the last time you made the backup.
Just hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery. Then, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps. Also, you will be able to select the backup you want to restore
