Just added an airport card 8 years later.

I bought a used airport card for my Graphite G4 since I am no longer living in an apartment and truly needed a wireless network. I use Airport Express as my wireless source and my laptop (17" Macbook 4-5 years old) and iphone both connect with no problem. Now that I am trying to connect the G4 I can not. The card is recognized but the light on screen is yellow and the message is that it can not connect. I click on the radar icon and my network will not show up and when I try to type in the name it does not find it. Do I need to reset something in the airport express or is my problem with the G4?

Check the following:
* the software version of the Airport card in the G4;
* the type of encryption you're using on the Airport Express;
* the type of network you set up on Airport Express.
The old Airport card only connects at 11Mbps (802.11b). If the network was not set to be compatible with 802.11b (i.e. the "Radio Mode" is set to 802.11g only in the AirPort Utility), the Airport card in the G4 won't be able to connect. And as already mentioned, if you're using WPA you need to make sure the Airport software on the G4 is up to date because older versions didn't support WPA encryption.

Is there taxes that's going on here?
    I feel jipped!

There will indeed be taxes, assuming you are in an area where sales tax is normally charged.

  • Canon, airport express, 2 years later...

i can never get a canon printer to do well with wireless printing.
am on a new printer (ip4200), connected to an airport express.
    os 10.4.7.
same as nearly 2 years ago, i can print documents, but on a 'large' job (say 60 pages), the printer will stop about halfway thru.
    no info given, it just...stops.
anyone ever find a workaround to this? or an actual solution??
    thanx!

    Hi there,
I have previously printed 100+ pages (a costly process!) to an iP5200R connected to an Airport Extreme and had a similar issue. So I found and ran an update for the Extreme and I was then able to complete the job okay. But not long after I had the trouble I bought an LBP which is networked and now I use it for printing large jobs (much cheaper!!!). So I cannot vouch for how reliable the update really was but it might be worth investigating for the Express.

  • Just added 1394a FW400 card for PCI-e - not working

I just put in a "Best Connectivity" 1394a three port PCI-e card. But it's not connecting (not showing on Finder), yet my Lacie drive spins up when connected. The box says nothing about using with a MAC, but I assume PCI-e 1394a would work with either PC or MAC. Just not yet! What am I missing - something I need to switch on/off? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Chris Howe-
The problem is that your assumption is incorrect.
If it doesn't say Mac compatible and if their are no OSX drivers available it will not work. Although the interface is the same, the rest of the system must be able to communicate with the card (speak the same language) if it is to work.

  • What is the model number for the Airport Card?

The Airport card in my late 2008 unibody macbook has broken and I'd like to buy another online, what is the part number?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Click on the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen, then About this Mac, then More Info, then find Network, and click on AirPort. That will give you details.
Why did you conclude that the card itself is broken instead of just a network configuration problem?

  • Airport Card Not Recognized on iMac DV 400 SE Slot Loading

I just installed an airport card with adapter per Apple's instructions. It is not recognized in the Network list in System preferences. Internal Modem is listed as well as Built-in-Ethernet (with an active Internet connection). Has 10.3.9 and the latest Airport software updates.
It was taken from a working iMac and installed in my iMac. Any idea what the problem might be?

Will do. Thanks for the advice.
This computer is somewhat of a cultural icon. One of the first computers configured out of the box for video editing. On a Contour stand, 130 Gb HD, 1 GM ram. Still very functional after 8 1/2 years. Looks great in the studio. Just wanted to wean it from it's ethernet connection.

  • Airport card not detetected

hi, i have an ibook g4, but i am totally confused on what model it is,
i thought it was the late 2004 model and from the specs on the apple site it said i need an airport extreme card, but after purchasing one i found that my airport card is not directly under my keyboard but under my RAM and slightly further down , so my ibook had to be taken apart,
then it turned out the airport extreme card was the wrong one and now im totally confused, i don't know what model it is or what card i need, i think its just a normal airport card, but even after installing a new identical one it didnt detect it.
    what should i do !!???

    m-o-s,
My feeling about these particular models w/ the integrated BlueTooth/Airport Extreme card is that they may suffer from the "era of dicey solder" when manufactures were switching from lead based solder. Those sockets come off pretty easily. I ripped one off on a LCD connector for an iMac G4 of approximately the same era and like I say I have a donated 1.33 iBook w/ the socket still stuck to the card.
Even the Service Source for this model says in the section titled:
    "AirPort Extreme/Bluetooth Card"
    At the start, 1st warning:
    "Preliminary Steps
Important: To avoid damaging the delicate connector on the AirPort Extreme/Bluetooth
card, make sure you read and understand all of the instructions."
Then a few lines down, 2nd warning:
    "Procedure
Important: Deviating from these steps could result in a damaged card. Make sure you read and understand all of the steps before removing or installing the card."
Here's step 3 in the "Procedure" section:
"3. Caution: The card connector is delicate. Do not put pressure on the card, and do not deviate from these instructions.
Important: To disconnect the card, press on the upper right corner of the card—only where shown—as you use a black stick at the side of the card, near the card connector, to slowly pop up the card. You should hear a soft "snap" when the card disengages from the logic board. To avoid damaging the card, hold it by its edges, and lift it straight up and off the connector on the logic board."
    Then step 9:
"• After connecting the antenna cables, install the replacement card by aligning the card directly over the connector and pressing down on the board over the
    connector area only."
So OK I get it it's easy to damage the card connector.

  • "No AirPort card installed" - what's gone wrong?

Without warning airport has stopped working on my late-2010 MBP. When I try to pull down the menu it just says "No AirPort card installed".
Can anyone suggest some possible ideas for fixing this, without a trip to the Apple store and losing the computer for a while?
    Tom

Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

  • Swapping Airport Cards Between iBook G3s

So, I have a 2003 ibook G3 that has no airport card installed and an old ibook G3 that does have an airport card. The old G3 is one of those cool "clam" ibooks, so it's relatively old and running OS 9. The 2003 G3 is running OS X.4.5. I don't use my old ibook anymore, so I'd really like to just swap the airport card from the old G3 and put it in my 2003 ibook. Does that work? Any reason I shouldn't? Cannibalizing parts makes me a little nervous.
Here are the specs on the two computers:
    2003 ibook G3 (PowerPC 750) 900 mhz
    old ibook G3 300 mhz
    Thanks!

    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have stumbled onto a veritable gold mine!
Yes. They will work fine in a G3 iBook (any G3 iBook).
If you are looking to run 10.4 on a G3 though, look for one that has had its hard drive upgraded (the bigger, the better). And lots of memory, too. The iBook G3 (Dual UB) can take 640 MB with a 512 MB RAM module added to the 128 MB soldered to the logic board. (Some of the very earliest 500 MHz models had only 64 MB on the logic board, so are only upgradeable to 576 MB of RAM.)
I hope you have nearly as much luck finding a good iBook as you did finding the AirPort cards!

  • Airport Card on 400mhz Titanium

Keeping in mind this is not a power pc computer, running OS 10.4.11:
I just installed an airport card to connect to my wireless bridge mixed b and g network. The highest security option available via the menu bar is wep 128 hex. Within sys prefs wpa2 shows as available. Anybody understand why? Is this maybe an issue of wpa2 was not available when the airport card was designed (circa 2001 or before) and it hasn't been updated? Is there a firmware update possible for the card to allow wpa2?
I can connect using the wep but not the wpa2.
I don't really want to run that low of a security level just to have the convenience of browsing with my laptop in the front room.
    Any help appreciated.

    Duane,
Very informative. I'll be honest, this is the first time in 8 years of owning this powerbook that I even looked in the utilities folder for airport software. First time for an air card as well.
When I get home this evening, I'll check the powerbook specifically for it. I am assuming at the moment that I in fact have the most current airport software as I did run software update prior to starting all this.
Assuming I do, I just don't see wpa option for login via the menu bar. A couple versions of wep (text and ascii) and leap, whatever that is. I'm not that big on wireless networking, but I am gaining some knowledge as I go along here.
The real answer to all this is to get a newer powerbook, but for my current need, that is just not financially viable. Plus I love my titanium, just like a Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

  • New Airport card, no service...Help

I just bought an airport card for my iMac G4, I have wireless internet and two other macs, they work perfectly with their airport cards. I put my airport card in and nothing, keeps saying there was an error connecting to airport network, ive called my internet provider, apple, and the router supplier. None helped whatsoever, I even lost 50 dollars to apple for no help HA. It must be my computer because ive used a working airport card from my macbook and it still did not give me signal, if anyone could throw me some advice, or something im doing wrong or not doing, or some software that i need, I would be very grateful. Thank You.
    - The knight of ewigkeit

hey there Knight & welcome to discussions,
i had this issue w/ a friend's Mac & the problem was pilot error-- the card wasn't snapped in tight to the cable. as soon as i did that the Mac immediately found my network & asked to join. i am assuming you have the correct card-an Airport Extreme made for this computer, it should be wireless b/g compatible, not the original Airport Card. see this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26237. step by step instruction w/ pix. how i installed Airport Extreme card in a 20" iMac G4.
    good luck.

  • Blue Screen Stuck... Installed airport card into Power Mac G4,

everything was working fine. I got online, was downloading software updates while surfing the net, then I get a small black screen that tells me I need to restart my computer in several languages.
Now the computer only gets to the blue screen, the grey spinning dial/thinking wheel goes for a bit then its just BLUE... What has happened?
Does this have anything to do with electrical charges?
Didi I cause this by inserting the Airport Card? I didn't touch any other part of the machine.
I did not unplug the monitor only the ac cord.
Please give me some good news...

    Hi-
You have had a kernel panic. These are caused by software, or, hardware problems.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Your first suspect would be the Airport card. To be sure, you need to examine the library/logs in Console. If you can get a copy of the panic log that coincides with the kernel panic, it will offer some clues as to the problem.
You could just remove the Airport card, and see if the system returns to normal. But, there may be other causes.
Try a safe boot. Restart, and immediately after the tone, hold down the shift key:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
If you are able to boot, check the logs in Console.
If not, try a single user boot, and run fsck. Restart, and immediately hold down "Cmd + s" keys.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Whe the command line appears, type /sbin/fsck -fy and press return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Repeat until the "volume is OK" report is returned.
For now, see what the results of the above are, and please post back.
For further troubleshooting of kernel panics, see the following:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If you haven't already, disconnect all third party devices, both internal and external.
