Just been told there's nothing more BT can do, so ...

Hi all,
After a succession of engineer visits to resolve a problem with persistent sync dropping and resultant minimum IP profile, technical help now tell me there is nothing more they can do, so I may wish to cancel my contract (with no penalties). The last engineer put a long line issue note on the file, thing is I've had broadband on this line for well over a decade! The records of that are clouded by the fact that my wife left, taking the original account with her, some 12 months ago, so my new account only shows the last year of persistent faults. I'm on a fairly long line (I believe about 4.5 miles), but my father in an adjacent property has a satisfactory service on a line pair through the same route, also after a tree-rub was repaired I had a stable service with 3.5Mbps sync and 3Mbps download for approx 3-4 months, surely this suggests that distance alone is not the issue?  I know that I am on one pair of a 5 pair cable run under the concrete yard of a neighbouring farm, which previous engineers (on my father's line) have said has no good pairs, only 'less poor' ones. All 5 pairs are in use. The last engineer told me that there was another 20 pair cable recently dug in by the farmer close to my property. Another suggestion from 2 or 3 of the engineers was to inquire about fibre, as there is a cabinet next to the one serving me (cab 8 at Huxnor cross Kingskerswell) they suggested that feeding my copper from the fibre would reduce the line length to approx 2 miles. However having spoken to numerous departments, I was unable to find anyone who could look at routing and with tech help saying there is nothing more they can do, I felt somewhat abandoned. Then I had an idea, I've ordered a second line and broadband service, to force BT to find another route to my property, as I know all the pairs in the suspect section are in use. I already have a note on my existing account saying I can cancel with no penalties, and if the new line doesn't meet projected speeds (0.75 - 2.5 Mbps) I won't be held to the new contract either.
The question I'm asking is: Does anyone have a better suggestion (I have 14 days distance selling cancellation period)?

Quiet line good, the line passed PQ test on Wednesday. After the 3 most recent engineer visits I'm on fesh pairs over the entire route with the exception of the 5 pair stretch already mentioned (the rest is 20 pair or larger) AC balance was in the 60's.

    You have the iPhone 3GS, not the 3G. The last update to support the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1.
    iOS 4.3.3 includes bug fixes etc. There is nothing really special about this update that wasn't introduced in iOS 4.3. iOS 5 is the one to wait for - it will be released in the Autumn/Fall and includes over '200' new features/improvements.
    The additional text tines and ringtones were an iPhone 4-only feature.

    With that behavior you need to take the iPhone to an Apple store genius bar for an out-of-warranty replacement.  In the US that is $269 for the iPhone 5.

Most of us are very excited at the new "bells and whistles" that Adobe has introduced and in the past we've been able to QUICKLY update to the new version. We haven't had to uninstall anything to get the new. We are all working and have deadlines. This is A HARDSHIP ON ADOBE'S USERS AND THEY NEED TO FIX IT ON THAT END. Or give up some monthly fees.
    Susan Meredith: There are many ways to uninstall. I can do it through "CleanMyMac". But now I don't trust that Adobe's programs will actually download and then I'm in trouble...and out of business.

    Unfortunately, redownloading of past music purchases isa still in beta test and only available in the US right now.

  • Have just been told by BT that I need a new/different version of Thunderbird to work with the new BTMail system (used to be BTYahooMail) - do I?

    I have had btinternet email for years, and Thunderbird for a long time too and have been happy with both. Unfortunately, I am not technical enough to understand most of the help or instructions on the Thunderbird support/info pages, but did manage to get TB set up in the first place (ages ago) and it seems to have worked well since. However, on Friday both of my BT accounts (two numbers, therefore two sets of BT email addresses) were moved over to the new BT Mail from the old BT Yahoo mail. I was unable to log in to one of them, but the other one was fine - I had some 'screen sharing' help from a BT technical chap to sort it out. However, Thunderbird was unable to conect with the email servers. I told BT and the tech chap tried to sort it out on the screen share, but was unable to (and I was unable to follow what he was doing). Some months ago, I made some changes, as requested by BT, to enable the transfer to go smoothly (!) but the man changed some things on Friday, I think, as well. He was unable to fix the TB problem and I can't figure it out at all, and the lady from BT Tech help who I spoke to this morning (and who had managed to sort out my BTID log-in problem, thankfully) had a look and suggested that maybe I needed an updated/new/different version of TB or 'another email'. Well, I'd really like to stay with Thunderbird and was hoping someone here could explain it in plain english for me, please? I was wondering what would happen, supposing I need to download an updated/different version, if I did that and then sort of re-installed my existing BT email addresses (just as if I was starting again with Thunderbird)? I do hope there is someone here who can help - please - I'm rather fond of that little blue bird. Thank you.

    There should be no need to delete or reinstall anything. Re-installing Thunderbird itself is rarely useful, since doing this doesn't delete account data. Don't delete the old yahoo-based account until you're sure that everything you need to keep is in the new criticalpath-based account.
    CriticalPath is the name of the business providing email services to bt.com.

    You'd think bt could run their own email service, wouldn't you? Yahoo was generally seen as a poor choice. I'm not sure that criticalpath is any better.

    Just been on to an Adobe representative via chat and she's told me the CS6 apps will be available mid May.
    At least I can relax checking my computer's cloud area for any apps now! Can't wait to get my hands on Illustrator personally, been using the Photoshop Beta for weeks now... awsome!

  • When I export a PNG file on illustrator, I get random empty space along with my exported object. Is there any way I can make just my object export and nothing more?

    This is an example of my problem. This icon is the sole object in this document, and is the only thing being exported here. Yet when I do export it, a random bar of white space is exported along with it. I am currently using Illustrator to design the art for a video game, meaning that this empty space plays havoc with my end product, and I have to meticulously crop anything I export. Since I do have to make hundreds of individual sprites for this, I would love to learn how to fix this problem and save myself a lot of time. So, what exactly am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?

    I believe the resulting/final size may extend just a tiny bit above a whole point/pixel (value) on the pixel grid.
    You may see by Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds (if needed), then select one of the top Reference Points in the Transform palette and look at the Y value measured in points/pixels.
    If that is the case, the solution would be to get rid of that tiny bit.

    Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
    You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

    I just want to know how to sync with the new itunes11! Why is this dated stuff still here when I have just downloaded? You update me but refuse to add the instructions on use? What on EARTH?!

    As to actually doing the sync, you have two choices:
    1) You can click the button for your device in the top bar and you'll get the normal sync page as described in the documentation;
    2) You can select to show the sidebar under the View menu in iTunes, after which the directions will work exactly as before.

    I'm another one of the very grumpy customers regarding the problems synching Outlook calendars with the new 2.0 iPhone.
    I have another twist: I did not ever have multiple calendars in Outlook until the 2.0 update; I had just one. After I updated the iPhone software to 2.0 I have multiple calendars which I did not create. My iPhone has all the events listed, color coded by these various calendars, but when I look at my calendar(s) in Outlook, I can not see all the events at once. So my iPhone is the most complete, and my computer version is fragmented. This is an unacceptable royal pain. I'm relieved to know it's not just me, my iPhone, my Outlook, etc., but I'm definitely one of the many of us who are grumpy with Apple and impatient for their fix.
    My question is: how do I sync my Outlook to my iPhone and delete all these calendars without deleting events? I just want one calendar again: mine, all mine.
    PS I do have recurring events, but way too many to hand change them all; that's ridiculous. Even if I didn't have many of those it's ridiculous that the recurrences should create these problems. It's a pretty basic electronic calendar function.

    Only good for direct download links. I can pick to view my lecture in either audio or video format through WMP or QT from my school website. The formats come in a drop box form, which when on a desktop or laptop open in the player you choose and play. I hope this makes sense

    You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
    You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
    As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
    An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.
