Just bought a new macbook pro, how do I transfer files from my pc to my mac using a network?

I have been reading on the apple website, and the best option for me is to use a network, I understand how to set it all up on a pc, but I have no idea what it means where it says the bit in bold. (point 3)
Make sure that both computers are turned on and connected to the Internet.
In the Finder on your Mac, choose Connect to Server from the Go menu to open the window.
Type your PC's network address in the Server Address text box using this format: smb://ServerName/ShareName, or select the name of your PC in this window (if it appears).
Click Connect.
Enter your PC's workgroup name, your user name, and your password when prompted, then select the volume or folder you wish to access.
Your PC volume should appear on your Mac Desktop.
Open the volume and drag and drop files directly from it to anywhere on your Mac.
When finished, drag your PC volume to the Trash to unmount it.

You'd have to give us some more information in regard to the inputs of your display.
Generally, you should be able to plug your current PC into one input (DVI most likely) and then the Mac mini into another (HDMI) then flip between the inputs on the monitor via the on-screen menu.

I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.

  • I just bought a new ipod shuffle, how can i transfer music from my old ipod onto the new one

How do I transfer from my old ipod to my new ipod

You can't transfer it directly.  If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library.  Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

You can connect them in Target Mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 and then drag and drop from the iMac to the MacBook.

Put the G4 into Target Disk Mode and open Migration Assistant on the new MBP. Your G4 needs to be running 10.5.8.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro and it came with the old operating system, how do I upgrade it to the latest one without having to purchase it?

    Hi,
Im a new Mac user. I currently just bought a new MacBook Pro. The first computer I got apparently had a problem with the flex, so I had to go change it for a new one. The first one had the latest operating system, the second one the store gave me didn't, yet it's still a brand new computer, so I don't see why I should have to pay for the new operating system, which should already come with my brand new computer. So I am trying to contact apple so they may give me permission to download it from the app store for free, due to this inconvenience and first bad experience. The vendor tells me that sometimes new computers may come with old operating systems because they're from an old batch of new computers. Oh and by the way, I'm from Honduras, and bought it at Jetstereo, in Tegucigalpa (the capital). This store is a licensed distributor.
    Hope someone can help me,
    Ankie Zapata

Go to the Mac App Store main page and click on Support under Quick Links.

  • Just bought a new Macbook Pro with OS 10.8.2.  Had windows.  I have literally 1,000's of tunes in .wma.  How can I transfer them or otherwise play them on new Mac?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with OS x 10.8.2 because my PC died.  I have well over 3,000 tunes and they are WMA and WAV.  Can anyone help me with advice to convert them to iTunes format (MP3).

Flip4Mac works, has done for many years.

  • Just bought my new MacBook Pro and..???

I hope this is not a redundant issue; I didn't see it in the search results.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro today from my Apple Store, that was supposed to have a 160 GB hard drive with Leopard already installed.
When I started it up, I noticed that I had Tiger 10.4.7 installed, and that the 160 GB HD was showing a capacity of 148 GB, with the OS taking up an extra 12 GB after that.
I do have the Leopard disks, but I'm hesitant to do anything until I get an answer on this HD question. Did somebody make a mistake?
Some context: I'm a loyal Mac user since 1990, but my last purchase was a PB G4 in 2001. So you can imagine how delighted I was to find a HD of that size on a Mac, but now I see that in true form, the system software is now enormous?
Can anybody help someone like me -who has obviously been out of the loop in terms of keeping up with the upgrades- understand what is going on with this stuff?
    This stuff being:
-the actual amount of HD space I can expect to get from "160" GB
-the amount of space Leopard takes up
-and, are we talking in relative terms about a very low amount of HD space once I get things like the Master version of Creative Suite loaded on?
Excuse my naïvete, but how and why did these programmes get so bloody big?

No hard drive on the planet gives you the full number of gigs as they say. 200 gig drives give you 180 something, 160 gigs give you 148. That's just the way it is. I won't bore you with technical reasons. What you got is 100% normal. OSX itself doesn't take 12 gigs, but the iLife suite comes with a TON of content like audio loops, video files for iDVD, and all the other crap that goes with it. That's about half of the gigs right there. And yes, the size of installed programs has grown and grown and grown.
My CS3 Design Premium suite takes up about 5 gigs total. The Master collection will be more, I'm guessing 7 gigs maybe?
Bottom line, 160 gig harddrives are puny really. I just bought a 17" MBPro 2 days ago, paid a cool $3,000 for it with tax. For that kind of cash, Apple should really be putting 200 or 250 gig drives in as standard. They retail for only a few bucks more than the 160s...
I have a 7200 RPM 200 gig drive ready to go whenever I feel like re-installing all my apps and such.
In closing, you have a perfectly normal machine, and those numbers are spot on correct.

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything to the new laptop.  BUT I'm having some real problems--e.g., wg from my older one to the new one.  Both use the same latest version of Snow Leopard.  My new laptop has the newer track pad.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything from my older MacBook Pro to the new one.  Both use Snow Leopard, the latest update.
My new one has the newest trackpad, the old one, no.
I'm have big problems using Text Edit on the new laptop--the curser does not go where I want it to go for editing, I cannot get the text to be a clear or as large
as with the older Laptop.  Similarly, I cannot find a way to enlarge the menu bar.  But the text edit is my biggest problem right now.  I have reviewed all the preferences, particularly those in Universal Access, to no avail.
I finally gave up, used dropbox to send the text edit document to my old laptop, and continued with ease.  But this is not the way it should work.  I bought the
new laptop because the old one is showing signs of age.....
Is there something wrong with Text Edit while using the new trackpad?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)
