Just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. transferred data from my old macbook over n it created another user name. that's actually good--xcept for music, which i want on my new acct. How do i move files from my "old comp" acct to my new one?

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? I've googled extensively but can only find instructions for OSX 10.6 and previous, which talks about the "Shared folder," which I can't seem to find.

That's actually bad. Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and seriously consider starting over.

You can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities to get all your files from one iMac to the other. If you want to upgrade your older model to MtLion you need to have at least a mid 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo with a bare minimum of 2GB of RAM. Then you need to buy the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD , update with
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
at which point you can access the App Store to purchase and install MtLion 10.8 where you would then have access to the iCloud.

Indeed.  Best Buy just extended its return policy to 30 days.

  • I lost my laptop I didn't back up and I just bought a new one .How can I get all the songs I bought in itunes store back to my new laptop??

    can someone help me please?
I lost my laptop on Monday and I didn't back up. I just bought a new macbook air so I know I have to install all my applications and softwares again but I was told I could get my old itunes library I mean all the music I bought back in my new laptop. can someone tell me how to do it or if I can?

Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies (as iTunes itself advises) in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
For apps, look here for instructions on redownloading.  For songs, movies, and videos, if you don't have a backup of your purchased items, either on external media or another computer and don't have them on an iOS device (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad), you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your content.
If you have your content on an iOS device, post back and someone here can help you get them restored. Otherwise you can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
    Regards.

    Nope.
Apple recomends after each purchase to BACKUP your purchases. If purchased on a mobile device (iPhone, iTouch, iPod, etc) you should transfer your purchases to a computer running iTunes as soon as possible to back them up.
If you don't have your items in your library, I'm afraid there is little recourse.
Hope you did not loose too much.

  • My HDD broke and I bought a new one. I never made a recovery disc. No way to recover?

As the topic states, I broke my HDD on my Toshiba Satellite L745-S4110 and I just bought a new one. The hard drive is completely fried; the BIOS cannot detect it upon start up.
It broke because I bumped the hard drive while it was writing data, but that's beside the point; the obvious fix was to buy a new hard drive.
So I've bought this new hard drive, and now I want to re-install Windows on it as well as all of the associated drivers for the components on the laptop. I want to be perfectly, crystal clear; there is NO WAY for me to do this without forking $30 over to Toshiba for them to ship me a recovery disk? (No, I never made one while I had the chance.)
If this is the case, I'm just going to pirate windows and hope for the best on getting those drivers back. From the wise words of Gabe Newell:
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
I already own a license to the copy of Windows for this laptop, yet I must still spend money to (legally) obtain the software that I already own a license to use? That's definitely a service problem.
The other reason that pirating windows is the better option here, is that the associated recovery disk (which I will have to pay $30 to get) is going to have a bunch of shovelware on it that I absolutely do not want. A pirated copy will not have any of this.
Sorry, I'm done ranting for now. Anyways, to re-iterate; there is no option to simply download the needed recovery disk as an ISO and then burn it myself?

    Satellite L745-S4110
    Drivers and utilities are here.
No need to pirate anything. As you say, you have already purchased Windows 7 Home Premium. And as the mad RN says, you can legally download Windows. (Microsoft sells activation - not the software.)
Select Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 (bootable) from this site.
Download Windows 7 Integrated With SP1 ISO – Official Direct Download Links
Be sure to partition and format during Setup. (No need for this using the recovery media. And you get a recovery-environment partition plus a full-recovery partition.)
       Installing and reinstalling Windows 7
Good luck on installing the drivers and utilities. The order is problematic. Best luck seems to be had by installing the Intel chipset and display software prior to other drivers. (No need for any of this when you use recovery media, of course.)
If you cannot activate Windows using the product key on the bottom of the computer, come back here for tips. (Windows on the recovery media is preactivated.)
One advantage to this approach is you'll avoid all the extra garbage, especially offers from Amazon, NetZero, Norton, QuickBooks, and Skype.
My time, however, is worth way more than the $30. I would opt for ordering the recovery media and removing the garbage. But that's your call.

Those choices are controlled via System Preferences, Trackpad.

  • I've just bought a new mac and I want to transfer the content from my old Macbook to my new. If I have iCloud enabled on both devices, is this simple, or is there a limit to what I can transfer? For example, can I upload word files to iCloud?

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

I can import all the MP3 songs but iTunes ignores all the m4a format files. What to do? I have copied them into the music file along with the mp3 files but they still dont open in iTunes.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

Your MBP should have been given to you with the original installation disks and OS.  The Lion OS is licensed to the person who sold it to you.  You will have create your own account and purchase Lion if you wish to use it.  Those are the stipulations in the licensing agreements.
