Just bought an iBook G3

I just picked up an iBook G3 off of ebay today, and I don't have super high expections. Earlier this summer I bought a Macbook, which I love. I wanted to get an inexpensive backup that I can tote to school every day and abuse. For $200 I thought why not? I was considering getting an Asus EEE 701 when it came out, but now it is delayed until October, so I looked for an iBook G3, and I found one with a 500mhz cpu, a tiny 10gb hdd, and 384mb of ram. I plan on running schoolhouse, neooffice, and Safari.
Any issues I should be aware of? Was this a wise move? Have any of you found better deals than this? I am just using this thing to take notes in class, and sync with my network at home.

+Any issues I should be aware of?+
The iBook G3 (Dual USB) is somewhat prone to logic board failure. The failure is more common in later models (the program was started for the 800 MHz models and was expanded to include them all), however, it would be wise to handle it with a bit of care, taking care never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. If you're picking it up in your left hand, grab it in the center under the trackpad instead of by the left corner.
+Was this a wise move?+
It depends. Were the original software CD's included in your purchase? Has the OS been upgraded? If so, to what version of the OS and are the upgrade discs included? You are going to need some software discs for maintenance, and your MacBook discs won't do since it has an Intel processor, while the iBook has a Power PC processor.
That 10 GB hard drive is a real OS X killer. I have kept my 500 MHz iBook in OS 9 because that small hard drive really isn't up to running OS X, in my opinion. When the 500 MHz iBook came out, OS 9 was the default OS on it.
The 500 MHz iBook came with four options on the optical drive: CD-ROM (only reads CD's), CD-RW (reads and writes CD's), DVD-ROM (reads CD's and DVD's), or a Combo drive (reads CD's and DVD's; writes CD's). The CD-ROM version has 64 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board; the other models have 128 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board. The fact that the one you've purchased has 128 MB of RAM (384 - 256 = 128) says that the optical drive is something other than the mere CD-ROM. The RAM can be maximized to 640 MB by removing the 256 MB module in the one available RAM slot and replacing it with a 512 MB 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.

If you want wireless networking and/or wireless internet access and an original AirPort card hasn't been installed in it, you will need one of those. Possible sources (last checked July 9):

Only time will tell if this has been a wise purchase for you. I bought two 500 MHz iBooks through eBay almost five years ago, and they are still chugging along, although they now sit idle a good deal of the time, since I've bought an 800 MHz G3 iBook and a 1.2 GHz iBook G4 since that time (also on eBay).
If you're going to want to use it with the battery, you may need a battery replacement, too. The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years. An iBook G4 battery works in the 500 MHz iBook G3, too (but the color of the battery is a little bit different).
As long as you're not expecting it to measure up to the MacBook, you may be satisfied. Keep in mind that it is six years old.
Good luck with it.

  • I just bought an IBook G4.. perfect condition, but I can not get it to connect to my wireless.

I just bought an IBook G4 in perfect condition, but I cannot get it to connect to my wireless. The IBook came with all the original cables, CDs, Books and packaging.., Like I said perfect condition. It was sold as having Airport Extreme, but I don't know how to make sure it is Airport Extreme.
I know the password is correct and the wireless system works on my other computers (PCs) . It picks up my wireless network, but I get a prompt that tellls me the password is not correct.  I have set it to WAP... I tried WEP but was told it should be WAP... I even took it to my son's home this weekend and got the same results from his wireless connection.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Sam,
Your iBook is younger than mine. I have an iBook G4. 800MHzPower PC G4 processor.256K level 2 cache. 256MB of DDR SDRAM; supports up to 640MB.
This unit did NOT have an AE card preinstalled. I purchased that at an Apple Store and they did the install for me. The iBook ran OS 10.3.3 out of the box. I know it was on the Internet via ABES g standard on a dial up AOL connection thanks to Tesserax on the Airport forum.
My iBook is now running 10.3.9. It was on the Internet with 10.3.4 mayb even 10.3.3. Can't remember. The only reason I went to 10.3.9 was for a printer istall.
We purchased an iBook G4 exactly like yours for a friend. There was a noticible speed bump on that one. I set it up for our friend and there was no difficulty getting on the Internet with it here at my home or his.
Have you been able to connect to the Internet at a hotspot?  Just trying to cover all the bases.

  • Just bought an iBook G4 1.33ghz for $59.

I was messing around on eBay, lastnight and I bought a iBook G4, 12" 1.33ghz for $59.99. The auction listed that it works and that OS X is included, but never mentioned what version of the OS it was. It's also graded a "C" cosmetically. Here is a link to the product I purchased:

I'm curious as to how decent this model is as far as being able to go online, chat with friends, listen to music, maybe watch a movie? It's certainly not my main computer as my main computer is an 8 core AMD system hooked up in my livingroom to my 65" HDTV and running through my surround system. No, my friends this is my take out to the coffee shop, and fiddle **** around with it. I have no interest in playing flash games on it or any kind of games. I just want to know if this thing is still a better alternative to those tiny netbooks? Any info. and direction towards software, hints...it's all appreciated! Thanks Folks!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's probably going to cost you $20 to $65 for a power cord. If you want to run it from a battery, a new battery will cost you a lot more than you paid for it.
If you want to run Mac OS X 10.5, I would strongly recommending upgrading the memory with a 1 GB module.
It says "OS X is included," but it doesn't say the operating system Install disc is included, so it probably isn't. (This is rather bad news; I would contact the seller and ask if he will include the original OS Install and Restore disc or discs, but he maybe doesn't even have them.)
I wouldn't spend any more money than I had to on it to get it running because the hard drive or logic board could go out at any time. You'll need the power cord for sure.
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Portable-Adapter-PowerBook-Extension/dp/B00007IFJY
I'd buy the original Apple one because it's the only adapter with the lighted ring on the adapter plug which indicates whether the iBook is actually charging.
Amazon has some listed with what look like terrific prices, but they don't include the AC cord that runs from the adapter to the wall outlet. You are probably going to want that AC cord so you don't have to be quite as close to the outlet when using the iBook.
I note that it is missing all four rubber feet that cover the screws on the bottom of it. These serve to hold the iBook above the surface on which you're using it, helping dissipate heat. You may want to replace those rubber feet (as a precautionary measure).
    Good luck with it.

  • I just bought an ibook pro and want to download a browser like google chrome which I am familiar with. Safari just seems to be a lot of icons for shopping and I would like to disable it and put something more functional in its place. How do I ?

I thought I just posted this question but maybe not. I'm going from a PC to an iBook and am trying to customize it. Can I add a browser like google chrome or even foxfire and disable safari? Safari jst seems to be an app store. Thnaks

It sound like you did something wrong. Try another download and install.
    Download of Chrome
    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en
    Direction to install
    Download the installer file
Open the file called "Google Chrome.dmg" after it's downloaded.
In the window that opens, drag the Chrome icon to the Application folder. This installs Chrome for all user accounts on your computer. Your home page settings and browser history will automatically be imported from your default browser. If you don't have administrative rights, drag the icon to a location on your computer where you do have rights, such as your Desktop. Chrome will only be installed for your user account.
The first time you open the browser, the Finder will ask you to confirm that you want to open the application downloaded from the Internet. Click Open to continue.
You'll see a message letting you know that you can search with Google directly from the address bar (also known as the omnibox). If you'd like to change yourdefault search engine, click Change.
Unmount the Google Chrome disk image on your Desktop by dragging it to the Eject icon in the Dock. (Make sure you're dragging the disk image and not the Google Chrome application icon.)

  • I just bought two ibooks. they power up but all the screen will display is a little folder that blinks icons but thats all i have two disks for software installation and software restore but all it does is that folder thingie. please help.

Please help. Is there any other way to reset to factory settings without the disks.

You need the original installation disks specific for each machine or compatible Mac OS X retail disks which you can buy on eBay or from several dealers.
To see which OS X you can use go to thse links and look up the specs on your iBooks.

Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Which version of the operating system is it running now?

  • I have just bought a ibook g4  how do you get the internet

how d you get the internet working from the airport , i have an airport extreme and the spec says airport how do i connect to the internet

You can connect to the Internet via the Ethernet port or wirelessly. To connect either way you need to have internet service from an Internet Service Provider, or via Wi-Fi. To connect wirelessly at home you need a wireless router like an Airport Extreme base station.
Please do post back with further questions or comments if any.

  • I have iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

Hi, I have the  iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

    Hello Glittergirl68,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the function to reseize the Font in an iBook is not functioning properly.
I recommend a few things here. First close all the apps that are running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, restart the phone, and try again.
If the issue persists, I would follow these steps from the article:
iOS: Troubleshooting apps purchased from the App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
    2. Check for app updates
You can setup apps to update automatically in Settings > iTunes & App Store, but make sure that your apps are up to date:
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
If  prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the app updates.
Note: Some apps may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If none of your user-installed apps will launch, there could be an issue with Apple ID authorization. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information. You can also remove an app from your iOS device and download it again from the App Store or sync the app from your computer.Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
    4. Restart the app
If the issue affects only a single app, try closing just that app.
    5. Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
    6. Reinstall the affected app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it:
Tap and hold any app icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wiggle and show a small "x" in the top-right corner of the app.
Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to delete.
Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your device.
    Press the Home button.
    Go to the App Store.
Search for the app and then download it again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Just bought a new iPad, and my highlights and bookmarks will not sync to it through iBooks.

Hey, I just bought the third-generation iPad. I have been reading on the iPad 2 for a year now, and have hundreds of books in my library. Because I'm such an intense reader, and value my highlights, it upset me when I bought the new iPad, synced it to iTunes, and then highlights and bookmarks were not transferred to the new iPad. The books were all out of order when they synced, and I had to rearrange them, but they were in the correct collections. This was my first hint that something was wrong. Next, when I opened my books, I could not find a single highlight in any of them. I checked all the books on my iPad 2 and they're fine as usual, everything is how I left it, including my bookmarks and highlights, and I even went into settings and made sure sync bookmarks was on on both iPads. I am completely confused and frustrated. I even put my new iPad into DFU mode and tried to re-sync everything, nothing is working. They just won't sync. Could someone please help me out, this means a lot to me. Also: is anyone noticing that the multitouch is slightly off with the new iPad? I'll go to tap dictation or drag an icon to another page, and it's just not that responsive. a few times I have clicked the dictation button but I gotten a space in instead. It seems you just have to press harder almost. Lastly, my 30 pin seems to be a little tight. I put a standard 30 pin sync cord that came with my original iPad 2 and iPhone 4 into the 30 pin and I almost had to jam it into the 30 pin slot. I work with iDevices all day long and have never had one that needed to be jammed in before. It doesn't seem good for the iPad. Yes, I am borderline about to return it, but the screen just looks so much clearer, I can't go back to my iPad 2. Wow, again I pressed the dictation button and the spacebar activated instead. If anyone can figure out this whole iBook situation so I can get my bookmarks and my highlights back, I would really appreciate it!

I also tried manually underlining a few things on the new iPad and when highlighting a paragraph, it would skip a few lines and the line would go through a few as well. Looks like a major iBooks glitch needs to be addressed here.

  • Just bought iBook, should the screen be like this?

I just bought a brand new 12" iBook and the screen appears to be slightly 'graduated'. That is that it is slightly darker at the top then the screen gets to a slightly lighter shade at the bottom making the dock look slightly pale and soft and lighter, compaired to the top part of the screen, which is a tad darker and more contrasty with better colour punch.
Slightly anoying. I also noticed that the actual screen appears to be slightly 'warped'. Looking at it from the side, the back part of the lid is touching the base of the computer, but the front part is a few mm higher with a slight bow in the middle, the other side has this too, but not as bad?
Are these two characteristics normal or is mine a bit faulty?

Hi! I've seen some commentary about different user's iBookG4 12.1"
displays; some about color and gradient irregularities, and a few about
having a marked varigated brightness/dullness across their screens
even though the desktop background was supposedly all one shade.
Yours is new; if this issue is an immediately known one, see about
taking it back to the seller; or call AppleCare or Sales Support if you
are unable to take it into where you bought it right away. Apple may
be able to get something done for you some resellers may not.
The iBookG4 Displays Discussion may be a place to read of some
other observations and perhaps a few thoughts in settings and maybe
(as needed?) having a certified technician inspect the machine to see
if this issue warrants some component testing and/or AppleCare repair.
    See iBook Displays:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=919
[My iBookG4 12" appears to be fine, but then I don't use it all the time.
The first optional accessory purchased for mine was AppleCare; the
second was a 1024MB Samsung/Apple RAM upgrade chip. It does OK.]
For your own peace of mind and to be sure a timely repair or replacement
of the part or the machine can be done, you should contact AppleCare
directly; perhaps even Sales Support on this "first quality" or "initial
quality" issue. If you have just bought it, and less than 10 days have
gone by, they should be able to offer you some satisfactory outcome.
I'd see about getting either another iBookG4 or a fast repair.
Good luck in this; keep a cool head and be patient with those people!

  • My iBook i just bought from USA won't connect to my wireless

My iBook i just bought from USA won't connect to my wireless that my iMac works on. Please help I'm seriously clueless and its driving me crazy!
I just says error when i type in the key and invalid password when I type in it in network assistant! ):): It comes up as WAP being the only option when I click the network name. but i don't actually know what WAP means....

Go to Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > System Profiler to tell the MHz rating, how much RAM is installed, and what type of optical drive it has.
To run Repair Permissions, go to Utilities again, and click on Disk Utility. Choose the named hard drive ("Macintosh Hard Drive" unless it's been renamed), and click on "Repair Permissions."
What encryption are you running on your network? Do you have a router? If so, it needs to be set to a mode that will work with the 802.11b standard, since that is what the iBook's original AirPort Card uses.

  • HT1933 Hi I have just bought a book on iBooks but it will not open as it says that it is not of the right format. Please help resolve this.

Hi I am new to iBooks. I have just downloaded my first book. When I go to open it, it says that the book is either formatted incorrectly or not in a format that iBooks can open. Which is weird as I just bought it from iBooks!
    Help please.

This just happened to me and iTunes support said they would send to Apple to investigate and reimbursed me for the books. I went back on my iPad and deleted the books and I got an iCloud icon with a down arrow after I deleted. When I clicked on the iCloud icon, the book downloaded and I was able to read it.

  • Installing software on the ibook I just bought

I need some help here because I technically challenged!LOL I just bought a refurbished ibook g3 500mhz, 10 gig, 128. I need some assistance installing software. I bought OS 10.3.2 Panther and I have OS 9.1. I want to install both platforms on the ibook. Can anyone help with instructions? Also how do I install other programs like MS office 2001 that I am using. Any help and suggestions appreciated.

You can't use a retail Mac OS 9.1 install CD on that model of iBook; an universal Mac OS 9.21 CD or the iBook's original 9.1 disks are required to install Mac OS 9 on it. Mac OS X can be installed by inserting the first Mac OS X CD and using that to start up your machine; this can be done by opening the Install Mac OS X application on the CD and following the onscreen instructions. If you don't have an OS currently installed on the iBook, insert the CD at startup to use it to start up your machine.
For other software, you can open the installers after downloading the software or inserting the installation disks into your machine. It may be better to install Office 2001 from Mac OS 9; this version of Office will not run in Mac OS X natively.
