Just bought External hard drive case I need an adapter

I replaced the old harddrive in my HP Pavilion ze4900, laptop. This was an IDE type but I had to remove an adapter / plug with male pins from the old to install the new. Both hard drives had only a male flat buss type slot arrangement.
Since the old drive was usable I ordered an external IDE with USB power and transfer plugs. However the units came with IDE pin HOLES so I need to find an economical adapter to attached to the hard drive which will give me the needed IDE pins and female slots to fit the HD.
Can I get some direction where I can buy this or any alternatives?
Thank you in advance!

I think this may take pictures for me to see what you are talking about. What do you want to convert/adapt to what? If you have a SATA hard drive like this:
There is no adapter to convert it to an IDE (PATA) like this:
Just guessing the only thing I can think you might mean is that you have an external adapter made for a desktop type drive so you need to adapt the 2.5 inch laptop drive to a full-sized IDE connection. Yes, these types of adapters are dirt cheap and readily available:
2.5 to 3.5 adapter
As you can see that allows connection of the big ide female cable to a laptop drive and also adapts the molex power connection. And they cost about a buck. At Frys it might be 3 bucks.

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

Bought new Mac Retina; how do I get CS 5 on it; bought external hard drive but get error msg 15?

    Hi there,
I was able to format the Toshiba hard drive on my old Mac and copy the Adobe Suite onto it. I followed instructions to format the hard drive to the Retina Mac through Disk Utility, but I still can see the external drive on the new Mac.
    Any suggestions…?

  • I have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

i have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

    Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

    Hello Willlig
If iTunes media is taking up a good majority of space on your computer, you can move it by following the steps in the article below.

Now I have tried to finding what it is for my other products, I don't know where to look. Do I or can I change the password without losing anything? Need help PLEASE

    Hi:
You need to read your router's configuration instructions on how to access the router's menu.
Hopefully you can access that and in the wireless security menu you will find the passkey to use.

  • Can you use TC as just an external hard drive

Can a TC be set up as just an external hard drive?

Yes, as long as you use ethernet or wireless.. not USB.
Then you do have some setup issues. Because for instance if you use ethernet for network, it is much better to put the TC onto the network.. just use bridge modem.. or you can use wireless.. but it is hard to use the same service for both internet and the TC connection if they are separate.
Beaten by Bob.. BBB.. second time this week.. (in Maxwell Smart voice).
Good point he makes.. you can use a straight external disk at half the price. USB direct to the computer is much faster than wireless and not that much slower than ethernet. Maybe even same.

  • Which external hard drive do i need to transfer my files from my G4 with OS 10.3 to my new iMac?

I have a Mac G4 PowerPC (with: processor speed of 1GHz, 1 MB L3 cache) running OS 10.3.9.  I want to transfer my files from the G4 to my iMac (.21.5/2.5QC/2X2GB/500GB/6750M) which is still in the box, for the last 3 years.  I believe it is running OS Mountain Lion.  All the Mac-compatible external Hard drives i have looked at are for OS 10.5 or 10.7 and above. Are there any external hard drives for sale that will work with my OS 10.3.9 to transfer files to my iMac? If not, how can i do this transfer of files?

An external hard disk drive enclosure with FireWire400/800 ports, with others
may be able to be used; but not as an adapter from one kind of port to another.
The old iMac uses USB, perhaps as slow as 1.1; that won't work with newer
USB3.0; but both the newer and older computers could use FireWire; or maybe
    ethernet for computer to computer.
Newest models have Thunderbolt data ports, so adapter cables are needed.
And then you'll need cables to match whatever combination you end up with.
{You may have tried something or another, but not posted back to say if you did.
    And this thread is nearly two weeks old, now. I just happened to find it here.}
For what you suggest, you may be able to find a suitable cable, perhaps FireWire
or Ethernet, depending on the ports available and cables still applicable to both.
Does newer iMac have FireWire ports? You could buy a FW400 to FW800 cable where
the ends are different, if the newer machine has FireWire800. [The old one has FW400.]
This would have to be equipped with the protruding connectors so each could make
the connection between each computer's built-in ports. Not all cable sets do this.
This would be the fastest way to copy content between machines, if FW 800 in newer mac.
Port-powered external hard drives may be under-powered and fail to work, so that is why
I suggest  enclosed HDD with its own AC power adapter that will not rely on FW or USB
for the power to run the drive and the electronics inside the enclosure.
example of external enclosures with multiple ports and its own power adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
This is an image of the lesser model series with fewer ports. The FW800 and USB3.0
are both backward compatible to their older counterparts, FW400 & USB2.0. But even
so the old 1GHz iMac G4 with USB1.1, would not be able to use newer USB3.0; yet
should be able to connect via FireWire400 to FireWire800 by special cable.
If the iMac G4 is still working, that's a plus. Attempting to remove the old IDE/ATA HDD
and access it outside the PowerPC iMacG4, is really a troublesome effort, one to avoid.
But the PPC iMacG4 can be started in Target Disk Mode and accessed as a hard drive
via FireWire cable, too. Then files can be seen as though the old Mac is an external HD.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • New Buffalo extreme external hard drive do I need to format before use

    Hello
Just purchased a Buffalo extreme external hard drive which can be used for mac or windows.  What I would like to know, do I need to format it journaled before using this hard drive for backing up only?  Should I partition this hard?

  • Are there certain external Hard Drive cases that aren't compatible with Mac

I have a new 160gb Hitachi hard drive and connected it to a Vantec NexStar usb 2.0 hard drive case (borrowed from a friend).
Disk Utility sees the external disk...however, whenever I try to Erase or Partition, the Disk Utility hangs. In Activity Monitor, it shows up as "not responding". I even left it over night to see if it recovers itself but no luck. I've tried the MacOS Extended (journaled), MacOS Extended, and MS-DOS types.
I'm wondering if this case is incompatible with Macs? I would prefer a case that has firewire though...so I might just buy a new case to try?
Has anyone run into something similiar?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the idea...not sure why I didn't try that.
My new iMac recognized the drive immediately and asked if I wanted to initialize it. Took about 2 minutes. When I connected it to my MBP, it saw it right away...
I'm still not sure why the MBP couldn't initialize the drive when I tried...
Oh well, important thing is..it's working now..and I've backed up my iTunes and iPhoto libraries.
    Thanks again!

  • What size external hard drive do i need to backup my macbook pro?

I know I need to backup my computer, especially since I have been experiencing some problems with it and will need to take it into a store to get looked at, but I do not know what size external hard drive I need to back my computer on.

Drives are so low in cost today, go for something that will meet your needs for a while...if you are going to use Time Machine, get a drive large enough that you can have a partition double the size of the internal drive for TM backups, and a partition you can use for more storage and work space.
A decent drive like the Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB drive OWC sells goes for less than $200 (US) now.  Has a fast interface and is easy to setup.

  • What size external hard drive do i need for Time Machine

What size external hard drive should I get to be my Time Machine backup? My iMac is 1TB. (also, I have MBP that is 250gb and will need one for it as well)
    Thank you.

It is better to buy an external drive that has 3 times the storage capacity
as  of the computer's internal HD.
    Best.

  • External Hard Drive Case

Hi there, I currently run 4 x 500GB external hard drives off my MACBOOK for storage, as I am a photographer. I have been thinking of putting them into one case so I can have one power supply and preferably one connection to my MAC.
1/Does anyone know of a good reasonably priced case to do this with that has a built in fan to help with cooling. Preferably with a firewire connection?
2/ Most of the cases I have looked at have eSata connections and my MACBOOK only has USB and Firewire 400. How would I connect?
    Any help would be great.
    Cheers ;o)

Other World Computing has several of these enclosures for multiple drives, although I have not seen any for 4 drives. I suggest that you call them directly (800.275.4576) and ask your questions.

  • Now that I saved everything to my LaCie external hard drive, do I need to erase my IMAC hard drive?  My computer is still slow. :(

My computer is still slow after uninstalling Macbook pro and buying a LaCie external hard drive and saving everything to it.  I repaired disk permissions.  Am I supposed to erase original hard drive?
    Thanks!

Not yet, get a second hard drive, or a second medium to backup your data.  You never want there to be less than two copies of your data at anytime.  If for some reason one fails, you'll always want a backup.  Clone with Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner.  Note, if you have an early 2008 Mac, it is not PPC, but rather Intel.  PPC indicates the chip is G3, G4, or G5.    You can double check this by going to Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Once you verified your Mac, I can ask a moderator to move this thread, so you don't have to crosspost.
