Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router. Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac?

Hi all - Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router given that my Uverse router works splendidly.  Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac? Sorry if this is a boneheaded question, but this is my first time backing up my machine ( I know, foolish). Thanks!

Your problem will be if you use wireless for internet then you cannot do both internet and backup at once.. you still should plug the TC into the uverse router and set it in bridge mode.. you can setup wireless if you like on the TC and use either TC or uverse but you must work out how to do both at once.
If you use ethernet on the Mac then wireless to backup is also a bit of an issue.. please ask as I can show you the setup.. or visa versa.. wireless for internet and ethernet for backup..

I have just bought time capsule and the airport part is working, but when I try to link to the back up disc I get a request for a password. "writeconfig wants to use the "com.apple.parentcontrols.keychain.YynLph keychain. Any ideas? I've tried a number of passwords for the mac and none work.

Please see Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ.
You can do it from using a paper clip and the reset button on the back of the unit. See the link above.

  • Just bought Time Capsule and im confused.

I just bought time capsule and I didn't want to open it yet since I don't want to pay the 10% restocking fee if i opened it. So i have a couple questions
my internet provider is telus, and i don't want to take out my modem. Is there anyway to just add this on so? all i want to do is too wirelessly back up my files.
Can you please give me step by step instructions? And one more thing do I need to pay extra to my internet provider?
    Thank you

Is there anyway to put the Time Capsule on the third floor?
You need to either use a wireless modem and plug the other devices into the Time Capsule through Ethernet, or run an Ethernet cable between the modem and the Time Capsule, or use another AirPort base station to broadcast the wireless signal and the Time Capsule to extend it.

i have 1TB time capsule and i need to back up more media. Can i also use a 3TB time capsule asswell?

You can, but it is not possible to continue backups "seamlessly" from one Time Capsule to the other.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of each Mac on the first pass when you connect the new 3TB Time Capsule.

  • Time capsule and mail not working

Recently purchased my 500gb time capsule and successfully set it up as the primary wireless router for home.
Back up and internet works fine through my broadband connection, but I can not download any of my pop mail.
I connect the ethernet port directly to my iMac and all is fine.
I experimented in creating another account and forwarding the original account to the new one. It worked for the first day and then did not receive any more mails. When I click get mail the activity window shows all the right stuff to retrieve new mail, but nothing appears in my inbox.
I have even tried to forward to my mobileMe account and the activity window goes through its paces, but no mail is shown in the inbox.
This is most frustrating and I hope some one has a solution.
    Thanks

Also on testing mail, I can send mail from both accounts to myself and see them through the web applications of my Hosting company and mobile me mail, but not mail on my iMac...

  • Just bought Time capsule 2tb from apple No Airport CD in the package

I just bought the time capsule from an Apple store,  The setup manual called about a Airport CD which was not in the package,  I have setup my wifi at home, however I have to setup a Windows Vista (already joined the time capsule) for printing,  The manual stated using the Airport CD to installl Bonjour for windows.
Should i have a cd with the purchase?
with my dlink router  (which i just replaced with Time capsule) i was able to set time restrictions for all computers on the wi-fi ,  when to access the web. mac address restrictions,  I do not appear to have that capability with the time capsule.  is this correct?  I configured the time capsule via  the airport utility on my mac,  no additional cd.  by not having the cd am i missing additional confguration parameters that I can tweak?

No, assuming that you have the most recent version of AirPort Utility, which is 5.5.3. You can open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu next to the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
    Click Check for Updates.
Using the Timed Access feature on the Time Capsule, you can set up individual restrictions for devices that are allowed to connect to the wireless.

  • Time capsule and Time Machine just says "preparing"

I just bought Time Capsule and ran my first Time Machine backup.
It took three trys before it completed a backup.
Now when it goes to back up it either says "preparing" for a very long time. Or it says it can't find the back up drive.
Can anyone advise a fix for me?

this sounds hopeful. How do I delete the sparsebundle file?
I wouldn't do that; it's a better idea to securely erase the TC via the Manual Configuration in Airport Utility.
In fact, I'm about to do that now; my backups from my MBP + another MB here were fine. After missing 3-4 days of backing up, I manually initiated one & it's just sitting on Preparing To Backup for over 20 minutes (on my third attempt).
I'm gonna let it rip through a secure erase tonight (a 1 TB Time Capsule (TC) can take a WHILE to secure erase. Remember; when you secure erase, it automatically adds necessary hidden files in the TC root) & backup my 170GB worth of junk (lol) tomorow night.
I just pray I don't loose my notebook between then

  • Time Capsule and Existing Wireless Network

I've previously used time machine to back up my G5 & Powerbook to separate external hard disks. I've just bought time capsule so that I could back up both computers to the same drive.
However, when powering on the Time Capsule device it is not visible on my existing network (called Wireless LAN) and instead it seems to have created a separate network called Apple Network b73829.
If I switch to this network I can see the Time Capsule device and it is also visible in Time Machine preferences but I cannot access the internet or any of my other wireless devices (Extreme Base Station etc.) which form the Wireless LAN network; I must switch back to this network if I want internet access.
What I don't want to do at this stage is replace my existing base station with the time capsule device; I just want to use it for backing up wirelessly.
I have reset the device several times now but it just will not join this existing network - what am I doing wrong?
    Many thanks & regards,
    Cliff

OK, so I have done this and it's made no difference. The new network Apple Network b73829 is still present alongside Wireless LAN.
I can only access Time Capsule if I switch to the new network, with the resulting loss of internet access from my Powerbook and, if I switch back to Wireless LAN I regain internet access but cannot see Time Capsule.
Although I just want to use Time Capsule to back up I have tried to connect it to my wireless LAN using the Join Existing Network on Airport Utility (even though I've been told I don't need to do this for Time Machine) but it has failed each time. After entering the password and wireless password information etc. and pressing update the Time Capsule device does re-start but there is ALWAYS an error message that says the device cannot be found and I should check that I am close to it (it's 3 feet away) or I should connect via Ethernet. If I connect via Ethernet it seems to disable the wireless functionality that I bought the device for.

  • I have a wireless modem just want time capsule to backup do I have to use Ethernet cable

I just bought time capsule to wirelessly backup since I never remembered to connect my old system that stopped working. If I just plug it in will my Mac see it or do I have to have the time capsule connected to the modem/wireless router in the house?

Our recommendation would be to follow the instructions in the Time Capsule Setup Guide to connect the Time Capsule to your modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection.
If you have plenty of time to experiment, and do not become frustrated easily, you might be able to configure the Time Capsule to connect using wireless only.  But, even if you succeed with the setup,  there are some serious downsides here:
    1) This type of configuration is not officially supported by Apple
    2) Backups will take twice as long as normal due to a "double hop" connection that must occur during backups.
"Hop one" would the wireless connection between the Mac and your modem/router. "Hop two" would be the signal traveling back again from the modem/router to the Time Capsule.
    3) In addition to taking twice as long as normal, the chances of an error occurring during a backup are doubled.
Since this type of backup is VERY SLOW, you would want to allow a full day or two for the first backup of your Mac to the Time Capsule.  The same backup using a wired Ethernet connection would probably take a 2-3 hours.
The bottom line here is that this is perfect example of a situation where the fact that you might be able to do something does not in any way imply that you should do it.
    But, it's your decision.

  • Time Capsule and Vista - Backup Software?

I am using TC on my home networks which is accessed from a XP Desktop and a Vista Laptop.
Once setup I can map to the TC Drive on my Vista machine.....however I do not see the drive under the "Network" link in Windows Explorer. With this setup I can drag files to the TC Drive very easily.
What I want to do is use a backup product that can perform the backups automatically (like Time Machine does with TC). I tried to use the Vista backup tool but I am unable to select the TC Drive - it does not appear as a drive or as available on the network.
The Vista laptop accesses the TC Disk wirelessly. I think the backup process in XP worked ok, I don't remember now.
Anyone found a way to use Vista and TC with a windows based backup tool? Thanks in advance.

I actually made some headway last night, but I can't say what exactly solved the problem (perhaps it is just fixed temporarily).
Last night I was prompted to update the firmware to 7.3.1, which I did. I still could see the mapping of the drive in Windows but not under the "Network" link so it was not visible from Windows.
I walked away for a few hours and when I came back....for some reason I could now see the Time Capsule, and the TC drive, under the network link. I then tried to access it from Vista Backup. I can now select the drive and I used the credentials admin/"the password I used when I setup access to the TC disk". I then get an RPC error and after looking in Windows forums I see 80 odd posts on this. So I gave up.
I then pulled down a trial of Acronis (I think version 11) and.....believe it or not...it all worked beautifully. I had to be able to see the drive under the network link first....that was key. I used the same credentials above in Acronis to map to the TC drive and overnight it backed up my files to the TC drive. This is what I needed.
But to summarize.....I don't know what caused the drive to become visible under the "Network" link in Windows Explorer. Once this worked then I could use a backup tool (just not the Vista tool as it is crap!!). There is also a free backup tool out there called Corbian (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm). Have not tried this yet but I might as the drive is now visible.

  • The hard drive on my Macbook Pro is getting full (mainly due to the size of my iTunes library). Can I store it on my time capsule and if so, how is it done ?

The hard drive on my Macbook Pro is getting full (mainly due to the size of my iTunes library). Can I store it on my time capsule and if so, how is it done ?

You can store your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.  So that you can access on your local (home) network (I wouldn't recommend access via the internat), (off site.....to slow).
If you do decide to put your libray on Time Capsule I'd recommend doing this.
    Option 1:
    1.  Don't use TC as a Backup (Time Machine).
    2.  Connect a USB drive to your TC or Computer and backup to the  drive. Backup when a change is made to the library (adding Apps, Songs you get the idea).
    Option 2:  (What Im doing)
    1.   Two Time Capsule's connected via ethernet cable (roaming mode, bridge).
    2.   Use TC1 as a Time Machine backup
    3.   Use TC2 as network drive.  (The information on TC2 does NOT get backed up to TC1).
3a. Connect a USB, FW, drive to your desktop computer (if you have one) use SilverKeeper to schedule backups.       Silverkeeper will look at TC2 and back it up to a external or internal HD.  I've been doing the or some time now.  Or connect to your TC and do an archive.
I have this setup because I don't trust Cloud base services and I want access to my files (in Sync) on TC where ever I am, as long as there's a internet connection.  It's expensive, but does exactly what I expect.
The most important thing is to safe guard your data in case of a failure.
In your situation it would probably be better to get a high speed SD or thumb drive, however I've never been successful in backing up those type of drives with TM.  What ever you decide to do make sure you have a GOOD duplicate (backup).

  • I have just bought an airport time capsule and im trying to install an airport utility. I tried the 6 version but it wd not load because it said might mac would not support. I then tried the 5.6.1. and it said it would not work with airport capsule.

I have just bought an airport time capsule and i am trying to install an airport utility programme to support this
However, it seems the version 6 which came out last year - i can't use on my Mac - Snow Leopard -
So tried to then install version 5.6.1 and although this installed properly, it says this will not support my capsule
    2. I have BT home hub 2. I presume I cannot bypass this as the internet router? I bought the time capsule for its capability to back up . The router was a byproduct. But am I correct in thinking that it acts as a secondary router or a booster rather than a primary router . I still need the BT homehub?
if anyone can help that would be great

You should either return the Time Capsule or upgrade your Mac at least to OS X 10.7.
