Just bought used g5 w/o a HDD

I just bought a used MacPro 5 from a friend. He sold it to me for pretty cheap b/c he took the HDD out of it and stuck it in his new machine. SO right now I dont have a HDD with a OS (OSX) on it. I have a few hard drives that I can put in there... RIght now they are in my p.c.'s. I have a copy of OSX and need to know what I gotta do to get this running. I decided to take one of my HDD and install it but when I power on - nothing happens. I was trying to install from the OSX cd but I cant seem to get the CD tray to open. I am using the key on the keyboard to try and open the CD tray.
Would I need to format the HDD on my PC first? i figured I would just format it when the machine booted up. I dont know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I dont know how long it sat...
So it could be bad PRAM... You could try a reset, though it sounds as though it isn't even getting that far. I think there are also PMU reset directions on the link I provided.
I dont have any of the CDs that came with the computer. BOth versions of OSX that i Have (panther & leopard) were bought from apple.
Good, those should both be retail version discs for any supported computer model. However, it is possible the Panther disc might not work. G5s came with anything from 10.2.7 (Jaguar) to Tiger (10.4.2) depending upon the model of G5. The computer won't boot to anything less than the OS originally used, but you should at least be getting a video signal. It might be handy to know which G5 you have. There's specifications at: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/index-powermac-g5.html The sites below also get information from serial number:
[Computer model lookup by serial number|http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html]
Enter the serial number of the Mac in the text field for "Search Tech Specs" on: [Apple's Tech Specs Page|http://support.apple.com/specs>.
Also, the HDD i installed was taken from my PC and was formatted as NTFS and has windows installed on it. COuld this be causing the problem? should I format it on my PC so it is blank?
The hard drive format right now isn't the issue, but you will eventually need to format it to Mac Extended journaled with Apple Partition Map. Once booted to installer disc you can re-format the drive. To start with we need to get your monitor working and the computer booting to the installer discs (the booting may also bring up the monitor). The only small issue might be if there are jumpers on the drive that are incorrectly set.
I am not personally familiar with the G5 models. I don't know if they still use the half-AA size 3.6V PRAM battery that many Macs before did. If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. A new battery provides 3.67 Volts DC. A bad battery provides under 3.2 Volts DC. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.
Alternatively, test the battery while it is still in the computer.

  • Just bought used iphone how do i delete history of messages on it

just bought iphone how do i delete history ,like messages that are stored on iphone

Did you tap on the text msg icon (I'm assuming you're talking about text messages) and see if there was a button there which may give you a clue? When I open text message app, there's an Edit button. Do you have that? If so, that may be a good place to start.

  • Just bought used MBP, need help registering Mountain Lion

Hi guys, I'm very new to the Apple community. I recently bought a used Macbook Pro (October 2011) on eBay, the seller tells me that in order to actually use this computer, I need an Apple ID and have bought/downloaded Mountain Lion.
I want to get this all sorted out before I recieve my MBP in the mail. Here's my problem, I have obviously made an Apple ID, however I can't seem to buy and download Mountain Lion on this site......I'm using a PC laptop currently. I don't have access to any other Mac computer to buy a copy of Mountain Lion (if that even is the correct terminology) in the meantime.
Is this whole process even necessary? What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Devin B

With Apple's new delivery system of the OS and the new licensing requirements to go along with it, it has become ridiculously confusing. Have the seller use Internet Recovery and do the following: boot holding down Command + Option + R to get to Disk Utility. Wipe the drive. Reinstall Mac OS - using the internet recovery will reinstall the original system (whereas using the regular recovery will reinstall the current system), so he must use the internet recovery. Shut down computer when it is either done installing, but just before the setup screen comes on. You can boot up and set it up using your own ID. Later, you can buy Mountain Lion and install it. This should work (no guarantees though - the "official" way from Apple is for the seller to contact iTunes and un-register his license in an email to them advising them that you will be buying it). That info is from a senior advisor at Apple.
With all this, remind the seller to also deauthorize the computer in iTunes.

  • Just bought used I-Touch and want to update information on I-touch

Will all the applications and music that came with my used I-touch be erased when I sync it with my computer? I did have permission from the old owner to share the data with my computer, both music and apps, but am afraid that when I erase and synch it with my library that all the "shared" apps and music will be erased. Is this the case or will the "shared" apps and music still be on my computer and the I-touch? I would hate to lose some of the games and have no idea just how many were in the basic package that comes with a new unit...

The applications were sold with the itouch
You're not supposed to sell hardware with applications and music pre-installed (unless it came with them in the first place). It's not the sellers software to sell. You buy a license to use the app or listen to the music, not to re-sell it.
Why would the music stay but the apps disappear?
Maybe the music was imported from CDs. Even so, it's still illegal to sell an iPod touch pre-loaded with music.
All iPod touch purchases are tied to the original purchasers iTunes Store Account. Purchases are not transferrable between users.
You should just restore the iPod touch to its 'as new' factory settings and then buy any apps or music you want on it yourself.
The image below shows what is pre-installed on an iPod touch:

  • Just bought used Ipad 2..CANNOT Authorize Itunes???

Hi, as title suggests I cannot link I-Tunes in with the Ipad for authorization....Have tried factory reset, deleting EVERYTHING but no good!!  This is a birthday present and I need your good help ASAP!!  Bought online so I have no idea of previous owner's accounts

Did you buy it from somewhere like ebay or Amazon where you can return it? If you can and you get your money back, I suggest you buy one in the Apple online refurbished store. I would never trust any other company or seller with anything, especially tech products. If you cannot contact the seller and/or get the info you need, you might have bought a stolen ipad.
Each ipad from the Apple online certified refurbished store comes with a new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and a full one year warranty, including 90 days of phone support. It comes in the white ipad box and includes the charger. Even if it costs more than you paid, Apple will treat it like a new ipad and you'll have the security of the warranty.
Please let us know if they take it back.
    Hope this helps.

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.

    Thanks Jakob. You are correct.
    I just finished another "experiment".
I transcode the whole clip 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 to another ext Western Digital HDD and got the Error -50 too. Problem is this ext Western Digital HDD is Daisy chained to the LaCIe.
So, I tried transcoding to another ext Western Digital HDD connected to my router. And this time NO PROBLEM.
So, I should readjust the FW800 connectors.
What do you mean by the controller of the Firewire ?
    Thanks
    Jakob Peterhänsel wrote:
All I'm saying is, the error -50 from the Finder normally means there is something spooky going on.
Here, the LaCie drives become unstable. In the few cases where I'v actually opened the cage and put the HDD into another mount, the HDD seems to be fine, so I suspect it's either the FW connectors of the controller itself.
If the drive is under warranty, replace it, otherwise, move your data to another drive if it startes to do so frequently.
Here, the drive will 'behave' normally for some time after a reboot of the OS, but it's a pain to reboot every X hours...

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

I just bought a second iPhone 5. I want to back up my first one to iTunes and then wipe it so my husband can use it. Then, I want to reload everything to the new iPhone that was on the first one. Advice?

    To wipe do this
    To wipe phone
    Turn off imessage in settings/messages
    Turn off Facetime in settings/Facetime
    Delete icloud account in settings/icloud
Erase all data and settings in settings/general/reset
Delete the phone from your profile in https://supportprofile.apple.com if you registered your phone there

I upgraded from Iphone 3g to iphone 4. I had to update my macbook pro to Lepard just to sync. the **** thing with the new iphone 4. I bought and updated to lepard. Now when I try to sync itunes does not recognize my new iphone 4 as mine and wants to erase everything I have bought using the phone before it will sync! It says everything on the phone now will be cleared in order to sync it with my existing info on the computer from my previous iphone. How can I just get everything from my current iphone 4 into itunes, basically add it to the info from my previous iphone 3g that is currently in my itunes?  I dont want to lose what I have on my phone currently....I paid money for half the apps for crying out loud.
I was so frustrated by this when I first bought the phone that I just pushed it out of my mind and NEVER synced it. Please help...

Nope - you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version on to a device running an older iOS version.  The reverse works, but in your case to use your backup, you must update to iOS 7.0.3 - no other option if you want to use that backup.

  • I just bought a recertified Mac Mini, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.

I just bought a recertified Mac Mini core duo - it's not the newer model-, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it  and using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.
The company I bought it from is not Apple, and I may regret that. It was in my price range, though.
This is the first time I've used this community, and I've been a Mac owner since 2000. Thanks in advance!

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.
