Just couldn't throw me a bone, eh fellas?

      What, in more detail, is this update that they rolled out?  My 3g speeds have always been on the slow side to mediocre.  Then in the past week, they got so bad that even *228 wouldn't work because the signal was so poor, with the 3g only coming in small bursts, and the upload speed consistently way higher than the download speeds.  These results were constant with several phones I tested out, most of them being in an actual Verizon Wireless store while they were swapping out my third droid for my fourth, since I suspected it might be a software or hardware issue causing the issue (oh well, my "A" key was sticking anyway, which is much more irritating than it probably sounds like at first, but try texting heavily with that problem for two months ..)
     ...but since yesterday my speeds have been AMAZING.  Upwards of almost 2mbps/s..A while driving, which is supposed to cut speeds by about half.  Also, I've always gotten an extremely poor signal in my house.  But then again, so does everyone regardless of what phone and carrier they have, which indicates it is the design and materials of the house that is likely responsible.  But in the two days I've been coasting at similar speeds as stated above as well.
     Anyway, I am just curious as to what this upgrade entailed more specifically as it seems to have made a world of difference.
UPDATE:  Had to create a new forum member name for reasons completely unbeknownst to me.  Anyway, I KNEW as of writing my previous post earlier this morning that it was just too good to be true.  And good old Big Red did not fail in reassuring that I was correct.
     Speeds have degraded back down to even poorer than that as described above before the little 48 hour jolt I enjoyed, which this most download's not even reaching up to .10 mbps, and upload speeds surpassing that by far, all with terrible latency and coming in the aforementioned "speed bursts."
     Perhaps Verizon saw my post and decided it would be amusing to play a prank on me by throttling my speeds down to zilch.  Wouldn't ve the first time I've had a prank pulled me by Verizon. (As bizarre as that sounds that last sentence is actually suprisingly true, and was quite a bizarre situation to deal with.)  I am still on an Alltel plan afterall, which undoubtedly irritates Verizon to no end.  I will be going in for a replacement phone literally once a week, every week, until speeds get back to where they were for those two days.  I kid you not.

Next time you get a phone, immediately check your PRL while speeds are good. Compare it to the PRL you have now with the slow speeds.

    My Ipad 3 is the same, it must be a design fault cuz I dropped a pound coin on my ipad screen and it shattered and every other week there's a new dent or scratch, though I wouldn't say I'm overly rough with it. I use it a lot, like most do, so accidents will happen and Apple hav to allow for that. I deffently wouldn't say that they are worth the money for the amount of trouble they cause, they r great devices, just far too delicate and expensive!

    I had a bookmark folder & decided to add two more. When I went to my folders I could only find one new folder. When I clicked on it, it brought me to the second new folder. I couldn't get all three to appear under the bookmarks section. I retitled them because two of the three bookmarks had the wrong bookmarked items & then I lost the third, which had all the original bookmarks.
    I've tried your trouble shooting section, I don't understand all of the information. I have been through the trouble shooting section several times trying different options. I've gotten myself so frustrated & confused :( I'm hoping for a little one on one help.

    There are limits to what may be restored, depending on what you have done and deleted, but once you have taken the action above you have preserved whatever is there.
    You can now try restoring any of the automated backups that Firefox has made for you (By default each of the last ten days). But take CARE any restore overwrites and destroys existing ones (unless it is from an HTML file then it is appended ). Always backup by exporting before you do a restore.
    You may restore from any backup you have made by exporting the current state, you are not limited to just the automated backups.
    Post back with how you get on and with any further questions.

    If AVG is blocking it then you need to contact AVG and ask them why that is happening.

  • E4200- Just couldn't get it to work

    So I purchased this product a few weeks for a great price. I knew there was some concern about the router. However, I took a chance and bought it. It was a breeze to set up everything. Yet it didn't take long before I ran into issues. First, let me explain my setup. The router is integral to my overall network. It is tied to client bridge. Also, the Samsung tv, Samsung Blu-ray, Denon receiver, Xbox 360 are also connected through D-Link switch. In addition, there are number wireless devices that get access such as , iphones, laptops, etc. I noticed that I couldn't get the xbox to properly connect to multiplayer matches. Also, facetime lost its connections after a few minutes. I tried to troubleshoot the latency with our cable operator and we zeroed on the router. I found out that the device works for a few minutes after your reset it but it didn't take long before it got flaky again. Subsequently, I ended up returning the device and getting a Airport extreme (not my first choice). However, I must admit that the extreme has been rock solid. 

    As you mentioned that your Xbox was connected through the D-Link switch which was connected with the Cisco Router E4200 and you were facing the problem of getting properly connect to multiplayer matches... But did you try to connect the Xbox directly to the Router E4200 and checked whether you were getting the same concern? If yes then here is the link which can help you:

    Secondly if you were facing the concern with connection then you would have done the following steps but before that let me know how you did install the Router – means was configured with the help of the Cisco Connect Software or did manual configuration?
    If you did configure the Router with the help of the Cisco Connect Software then would have opened that up in which you had installed… There you could able to see 4 small window screens…You would have clicked on “Router setting” window…Then clicked on “Advanced settings” button… That would have opened the Router Setup page, clicked on Wireless Tab and made the following wireless channel-
    For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz ---> Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
    For Channel Settings of 5 GHz --->Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
    Then would have checked the connectivity…
    If you did configure the Router manually then would have opened up the browser and on the address bar would have typed 192.168.1.1 that would have opened the Router setup page… From there you would have done the same steps as above…

  • My iPad 1 is now very unstable. Apps crash consistently, Mac Numbers/Pages etc incompatible with IOS 5.1 etc. There seems to be no backwards compatibility to iPad 1. Am I just supposed to throw it away? I have restored the iPOad and it has ample storage .

    My iPad 1 is very unstable. Many Apps simply crash after opening. There is ample storage available.I have restored the iPad twice now and still it is unstable.
    Is this a lack of backwards compatibility because no-one writes apps for IOS 51.1. and the original iPad anymore? not even Apple, as the documents and sheets I create on my Mac are incompatible with my iPad now.
    My naievete tells me that this is simply Apple expecting us to upgrade to later levels of hardware. If so, very disappointing for an Apple fan. Seems your App developer approvals (even your own apps) do no require compatibility with anything but IOS 6 or later.

    There are various things to make your iPad more stable. You can try deleting all apps from the multitasking bar; do a reset ie hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears; Settings > General > Reset all Settings.
    If you had the previous version of iPages (version 09) on your Mac before upgrading to Pages 5.2, your Mac should still have that version in Applications, which is still compatible with your version of Pages on your iPad.
    If you don't have that version, you can 'Export to Pages 09' which is still compatible with iOS 5.1.1.

    Does the router have DHCP enabled???
    I'm just going to throw you a bone and say that it might be Linux.
    I'll keep looking into it but another option for you maybe this.
    DD-WRT is pretty safe to use and is Linux based so I'm only guess it has a better chance to work with your computer (so i read).
    I'm not much a of Linux guy but you can trust DD-WRT.

  • OS X Installation Couldn't be Completed

    I just returned from vacation to find my 15" macbook pro retina dead.  While on vacation, I locked it using find my iphone and I have that code.  When I boot it says "OS X installation couldn't be completed" but this message disappears so quickly that I cannot click on the log.  I am able to get into the Windows installation (setup using the standard options for boot camp).
    I tried booting from an external recovery disk, but it gives the same error and disappears quickly.  The unit is 10 days out of warranty :-(
    Options?

    I had the exact same trouble- Dual booted Win8 and OSX Mavericks which was locked via iCloud (15" MacBook Pro Retina)- I tried holding Command-Option-R directly after startup and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for taking the time to answer this question AmazinglySmooth!
    On a complete side note- Activation Lock needs to have a workaround for those of us who aren't thieves and trying to use a device for Apple Dev purposes. I was given a locked iPhone recently from a friend who owns the phone but doesn't have access to the iCloud login info, the phone serves no purpose bar an expensive paperweight. It's not fun when my personal device works like an Android because I am developing for Apple (especially early beta)- throw me a bone and provide me a workaround for the iPhone 5s activation locked paperweight.

  • FCPX, just the tip of the iceberg

    I know that everybody on this forum felt, at some point, a kind of hesitation regarding the software "I don't want to call it upgrade because it's not". I felt the same, but for some reason, probably related to my blind trust in apple and in all what Apple does, I hit the buy button anyways.
    My slow internet connection allowed me to take my time to watch and read plenty of reviews and demos while the software was downloading, most of them were exciting except for the one issued by Apple in which we get the shocking advise to not install FCPX on the same disk where FCP Studio is located! I panicked because I had a project still in the rough-cut stage and I just couldn't afford not to be able to continue working on it on my FCP studio applications.
    But It was too late as FCPX was installed and all of my FCP Studio apps were moved to a new folder.
    I followed Apple's advise in moving my FCPX to a new folder and then bring FCP Studio apps back to the application folder where they used to be.
    Apple instruct to lunch Motion-4 first, so I hold my breath and did just that, it launched perfectly well, I tried the rest of my FCP Studio apps, everything was working well. ufff, that was a at least a good start.
    Now to FCPX, the app launched in no time and that was my first good impression, sat back and contemplated the UI and for some reason I felt HOME.
    I'd barely used iMovie before, except for it's built-in trailers that I find funny to use as a teaser to showcase among friends, I'd never used anything else for editing except FCP "since version 2"
    Second impression was, again, speed, a 2 minutes cut took less than 5 minutes of editing, I was literally flying cutting those iPhone-4 clips taken last weekend while cycling.
    Third impression, still in the positive side, is the export speed, THIS-IS-THE-FUTERE.
    everything worked smooth and like magic, smooth cam did a huge job stabilizing my shaky cycling footage, color correction and effects gave the whole movie a totally different look and feel, the rendering speed was just phenomenal. I was hooked to the bones.
    I'm not here to defend the software as an absolute must have, neither I am here to tell you that it can replace FCP studio right now,not a all. We still got to keep FCP studio for some time... we all know that.
    The actual version of FCPX is not perfect with some glitches and missing feature we all know about, but still, I can confidently say that this piece of software is indeed A GAME CHANGER and it will SOON grow on us in every direction. Apple must be busy working on the next update as we speak so let's keep the moral high.
    I highly recommend every FCP user to get the X version and start getting used to it. Personally I'm taking the X experience a step further, I'm  enjoying it

  • B&W G3: Reset mobo/new batt. won't help - no chime, just fans/HD

    So I decide to give this old G3 I had one last boost from what was already a snappy machine.
    - Rev. 1 mobo
    - Powerlogix 800Mhz 750FX 512k L2 cache (G3)
    - 1 GB RAM
    - ATI 9200 128 MB PCI
    - SIIG ATA card - 2 HDs connected.
    - USB 2.0 4 port card
    - FW400 3 port card
    So, I get a good deal with trade in from OWC on a Powerlogix 750GX (G3) @ 1 Ghz. Figure I'd bite...update the beast to Tiger, set it in a corner, and use it for surfing, iTunes, maybe a server in a future life (yes, yes, I know the Mac Mini price/performance ratio...I just couldn't let this Smurf go. My Digi Audio holds me over well otherwise).
    So, swapping the new ZIF in (standard procedure - had upgraded many a ZIF over the years). Go to boot...no chime. The usual: PS and fans just running.
    Checking the LEDs on the board indicates all is well. I pull all the cards, leave one stick of RAM, plug one of the HDs (both set as master) back into the board's connector. As bare bones as one can get.
    Reset the Cuda. Same. Reset the mobo. Same.
    Pull the HD from the equation. Figured just try to get a chime. Nada.
    Pulled the RAM in hopes of a getting a hardware chime warning. Zip.
    Picked up a new PRAM battery. Reset Cuda again. Same. Reset mobo...yup, same.
    I don't get it. The thing was booting no more than 15 minutes prior, running Tiger on the 800 Mhz G3. Replacing the 800 Mhz reveals the same situation...
    Any suggestions? I was thinking about swapping the board to a Rev. 2, but that entire "hey it worked 15 minutes ago" circumstance is driving me nutso.

    Put your bootable HD connected to the ATA port on the Motherboard. Disconnect any HD from the ATA card.
    Reset CUDA. And restart the mac.

  • Just a happy rant

    Hi all,
    No question here, just a very happy rant. Last week my faithful but old ALPB finally decided to throw in the towel and call it a day after almost 7 years of service. Sad, but also a great excuse to finally upgrade. Being that I'm poor, I couldn't afford new, but I was lucky enough to stumble across a 15" MBP early '08 model still under AppleCare until next year, so I jumped. The machine arrived today, and in anticipation of it's arrival I purchased an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard yesterday. The installation went smoothly, and once I was up and running I was shocked. I was obviously expecting the new machine to be faster than my old PB, but HOLY CRAP!!!!! Completely flabbergasted wouldn't even do justice! In just the fast few hours I've found dozens of things my old PB wouldn't even have tried to do! The speed and ease of which it does tasks that my PB used to struggle with is an amazing delight! It's been 7 years since I've been this thrilled about a Mac, and a long 7 years it's been!
    Anywho, I just had to vent my excitement somewhere, and this seemed an appropriate place. I have no Mac using friends, so none would understand my excitement. Any comments or suggestions for someone that just jumped a 7 year gap in Mac technology would be welcome. I've found myself on an unexpected learning curve just from large list of abilities my old PB just couldn't, or wouldn't, perform.

    Hi Everyone,
    I have encountered the following problem which I think a lot of other fellow iPhone users are also encountering however mine seems to be fairly pecuilar.
    Here's the issue;
    When making or receiving voice calls via my network operator's service, no one can hear me, i.e my audio input.  I can hear the person on the other end of the phone fine but they can't hear me whatsoever. 
    However when I use the likes of viber, skype and facetime, my audio input is perferctly fine and the person on the other end of can hear me.
    Note both viber and skype calls work just fine and 2 way communication is audbile regardless if I have a 3G or Wifi connection.  Plus I have full singal bar strength when near a mobile tower so that elimantes antenna issues.
    Also have taken alternative turns to cover both the top mic and the bottom mic during a viber or skype call and my audio input can still be heard.
    I've done a reset, a hard reset of the phone and a reset of the network settings, still to no avail.
    Have updated iOS to the latest version 5.1.1
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated?

    I have the exact same problem, I have already restored the phone and it didn't work. The microphone works with facetime, skype and the voice memos. What just doesn't make sense is that when I use my earphone's microphone when calling, it doesn't work either. If it was a hardware problem the earphone's microphone would have worked I suppose.
    This is the second iPhone 4 I have. The first one shut off after 9 months so I got a replacement phone. The replacement phone lasted 10 months when the microphone stopped working. I went to the apple store and they just couldn't give me a solution. They understood my situation and told me that it was very weird but all they could offer me was that I had to pay for a replacement. This is absolutely unjust, why do we costumers have to pay for the companies mistakes.

    Apple probably couldn't take it back. It's about 5 month old, so if it's one without a netlock you could sell it on eBay and get a new one.
