Just Curious...What is your Opinion of Web Analysis?

I'm just trying to get feedback on what peoples' opinions of Web Analysis might be. I've trying to develop some dashboards and am finding it to be very slow and not very intuitive. Thoughts?

Is it dead yet?
I didn't like it when it was 1-2-3 for OLAP.
I tolerated Win32 Analyzer.
I loathed Java Analyzer (there was so much pain in Analyzer 6, I can't even really think about it without assuming the fetal position). Let's not even talk about taking it "live" across the web. More security holes than a pound of Swiss cheese.
I finally got smart and just avoided WebAnalysis.
And am much happier for it.
So no, not a lot of love.
Regards,
Cameron Lackpour
P.S. Seriously, it's supposed to be dead, or dying soon, but like a monster in a bad horror film, I think it'll be around at quite some time before OBIEE finally replaces it.

  • What's your opinion on the search function on the NI website?

    Hi all NI web goers:
I give 1.5 of 5 stars to NI's search function. Most of the times I got very frustrated when searhing NI's website. It returns a lot of entries for my search, but either none of them are relevant, or there are about 10 duplicate links to the same page, and multiply that by the # of unique links you get, well, you get the idea.
So, what's your opinion on the search function offered by the NI website?

Not sure what this has to do with LabVIEW. I suspect the Feedback on NI Discussion Forums might be as good as place as any. This has been brought up before:

  • What is your opinion about IDEs?

I've heard different opinions about using IDEs like Jbuilder, Symantec VisualCafe, Microsoft J++...
Some people think that to program in java using a simple text editor is a prehistoric and a very hard way and they prefer using IDEs.
Other people think that IDEs are not good tools to program in java because they add a lot of unnecessary code and because you have more control for the code if you program all by yourself. These persons maybe think that the only utility of IDEs is their help.
I would like to know all your opinion about this.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I think it depends on the context if one may use an IDE or not.
There are 3 things to be considered:
    1) processor speed
    2) application type
    3) lazyness
    ad 1:
If you want to use an IDE, you must have a powerful processor.
In fact, all major JAVA IDEs are written entirely in JAVA.
So a Pentium 3 or K7 and faster processors are advisable.
    ad 2:
When you write servlets or small text based applications with only a few classes, an notepad like nedit for UNIX systems is in fact the best solution.
A huge JAVA program with many screens (SWING or AWT) for instance cannot be easily developed with a small editor. Here an IDE should be considered as a must.
(Unless you are really a hardcore Java specialist)
The same approach can be applied to bean development.
    ad 3:
IDE come with many pre-constructed classes and concepts. Developing a client/server or multi-tier application can be an easy task if you spent some money on an IDE.
Other advantages of IDE are built-in tutorials and programming enhancements (when you type the name of an object the IDE shows you immediately all its methods for example). So if you are a beginner or one of those people that thinks that a programm cannot be done without development platforms like Microsoft Visual XXX, JAVA IDEs are a logical conclusion.

  • What's your opinion on people contacting you directly?

I know this doesn't apply to everyone here, but everyone can feel free to share their opinion.
    Since I have provided a few answers in the forum for Business Workflow, and have contact e-mail in my "business card" some SDN users take the opportunity to send me private e-mail asking for advice. There are two situations;
    1) a person has posted a question which I have replied to, and the person sends me an e-mail with screenshots (heck, I don't feel confident about how to post those in SDN either)
    2) a person sends the questions in private e-mail without having posted the question in SDN
I find situations of type 1) are not too bad, although I still think it is the wrong approach as everyone else gets lost in the discussion. I have only experienced this once, and I then replied in SDN where I also tried to explain what the screen shots showed.
Situations 2) are in my opinion a real disrespect for the ideas behind SDN, my spare time, and/or my employment situation. All such e-mails are consequently answered without providing any help, telling the person to post the question in SDN. (Note: "All" are not hundreds, but I think I have to start using both hands to count them now - and that's during less than a year.)
There are two things I would like to know your opinions on:
    1) Would a normal person (i.e. you) cater to such a request (the second kind) in private e-mail?
    2) How strongly should I tell these people that they have crossed a line that shouldn't be crossed. Is the following going too far?
    <i>> Quoting Full Name <[email protected]>:
    > Please allow me to contact you directly with some questions
    > [SDN-relevant text/question snipped]
    >
No, as everyone who asks this receives as answer. If you have a question, post it on SDN. Not so everyone can see what you are asking about, but so everyone can find this solution. Besides, I probably visit SDN more frequently than my private e-mail inbox, and there are other people who can answer the question, so you will get a solution more quickly. Ordinarily I wouldn't have checked it until this weekend now that I am travelling, but since I had to look for some other e-mail I discovered this.
If you want a private advisor, you'll have to contact my company to hire me. That's the deal of SDN - free advice, but only in public.
    Kjetil Kilhavn</i>
Happy hacking, and let the Debate begin!

    Yep, agree.
I provide my e-mail address in my business cards for three  reasons:
    1. Personal/private messages
    2. Professional messages that should not be public
    3. It's the only form of advertising allowed on SDN
The response I usually give people for asking for help offline varies.
Sometimes I respond with questions of my own: could they give me a more detailed spec, how many days of my time they would like, and whether I can work from home as this would affect my rate.
Most of the time however, I have a standard reply handy:
<i>I would like to help but I would prefer this via SDN.  This has a number of benefits for both of us:
    1. By posting on SDN we help anyone that has the same questions as you
    2. By asking questions on SDN you have access to more knowledge than just asking one person.
    3. I don't always have time - on SDN there are hundreds of people who can answer your questions so you are likely to get a quicker answer.
There are already a lot of resources out there - far more than I could write about in a whole week, I would suggest going through the excellent workflow tutorials in the SAP help, and looking through the Wiki FAQ  https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/home/businessProcessManagement&
When you have questions, feel free to ask on SDN. But also remember that better questions get better answers, so use the rules of engagement to help you ask better qestions:

  • Logic Pro X Results; What's Your Opinion?

    Hi guy's,
I know the forum is more designed for troubleshooting but as a product owner I think it's a little bit justified.
I'm kind of at a cross road and don't know what direction to go in. Basically I've dedicated my life to music (Instrumentals / Beats) and really don't know if I'm being realistic about it as a career. So after investing in Logic Pro X and other products I put up the results on a newly made Soundclick page. I know most vocal artist aren't in Logic forums so I'm not necessarily trying to sell anything, all I'm looking for is an opinion on my work made with LPX.
A quick reply from you with just the word "Yes" = Being Realistic.
A quick reply from you with just the word "No" = Not Being Realistic.
I also like to check out other peoples Soundclick music so if you have examples on your page or another that have something that mine is missing, let me know what and the Soundclick page and I'll definitely check it out.
    www.Soundclick.com/MoVee
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the reply,
I was wondering what style of music is your favourite, to get a better idea of what your expectations were?
Some of your critiques are accurate because they were intentional. I listen to a lot of music and I think that's one of my problems. Meaning - lot's of songs (A-List Songs) incorporate parts that are off timing to avoid a mechanical sound, when you listen to the Master Recording you'll notice the vocalist makes up for it by playing (singing, rapping etc.) into it so it seems deliberate. When listening to a Master Recording with vocals most listeners would not analyze it or notice as long as the vocalist makes it seem planned. I know because as a listener I didn't notice until I heard the instrumental. When hearing an instrumental for the first time without a psychological reference of the vocals those nuances might be harder to accept. Thinking back to those songs when working makes me feel like some timing issues are justified as long as there artistic. I just hope you don't think they were beyond artistic or having a vocalist make up the difference. These are the kinds of battles I have with myself when producing.
As far as the "overly simplistic repetitive" comment, again your critique is accurate. That's another decision that's made from a reference. Many mainstream songs in the Hip Hop and Pop genres are built off of repetitive parts. It's something I noticed from A-List songs and agree with you about. The question now is, how do you maintain conventionalism (repetition) and variety?
If you have the time in the future maybe you can compare some of my beats to a song/instrumental that went 2 times Platinum and is indicative of that repetitive style - Black and Yellow by Wiz Khalifa ( kind of old now but the style is still prevalent ). Try and judge it from a compositional standpoint ( structure of melody, harmony etc. over time ) as a song like that was processed with thousands if not MILLIONS of dollars worth of equipment. Another Pop example that's a little bit more varied would be Katy Perry Extraterrestrial.
You forgot to let me know where I can check your stuff out.
       Thanks again, I appreciate it

  • Oracle Support - what's your opinion?

What's everyone's opinion of the support provided by Oracle?
I've been working with Oracle products since version 6. During the 90's the support you got from Oracle was very good but, in my opinion, over the last 10 years or so their level of customer support has been degrading year on year.
The 'My Oracle Support' portal constantly breaks down. It's sometimes impossible to find anything you want on there. Metalink wasn't exactly flawless but it was miles beter than 'My Oracle Support'.
If you raise a service request (SR) these days it can take ages for an analyst to pick it up. After that, the actual level of support you receive is very hit and miss depending on who you get allocated to your SR. We've got SR's that have now been open and untouched for over 16 weeks! Granted, these may be low priority, but it wasn't that long ago that Oracle Support analysts would be constantly seeking a closure to your SR. These days they don't seem to be bothered.
    What's everyone else's thoughts/experience?
Edited by: DonnyDBA on 25-Nov-2010 07:11

If you would ask whether Oracle currently looses customers due to their abonimal support I would have agreed right away.
The worst thing I ever experienced was an upgrade on a specific platform broke down to a platform specific bug, and Oracle Support was unable to reproduce the problem
because (deep breath) they didn't have an installation with Oracle on that platform.
So our org decided to swap platform, because 'Oracle doesn't support that and that platform'
Mind you in this org there are people who want to get rid of Oracle because it is not a Microsoft product!!!
The biggest problem is however most analysts
    - only know how to search Metalink (the solutions they provide I can find myself)
    - can not deal with transcultural differences (to put it bluntly: many analysts treat you as a 'stupid user')
Oracle should never have stopped local support in your own language. That worked!!!

  • What are your opinion on the new mac pro

I feel while radical its too limiting thereby loosing fuctionality. But I also knw how the iSheeps would follow their iSheperd blindly. There making this kind of thunderbolt for everything the norm. I also know that the PC companies brought this on themselves they failed to innovate followed intel and nvidia to blindly with there xeons and quadro. The 3 major pc makers market professional workstations that you would probaly sell ur kidney to get one we have the z820 while very powerful its just 2 xpensive. Let's take for example the imac is the best bang for d buck most beautiful all in one if hp had used say a normal 3770k and a gtx 680m 4gb dat would have brought the price of the z1 down drastically. Let's say d average joe wants to be an editor, compositor, colorist. if u goole pc workstations hp z820 and dell T7600 would pop up but they are dam so xpensive hp consumer PCs are garbage. If there is onething apple knows the average pro does not want to be bothered with specs. I think the pc industry brought this on themselves. Wat of the smaller custom builder they focused so much on gaming big megatron design like cases with all the talk of FPS is every thing. My only prayer is that asus, msi gigabyte should stand up aganist apple and start releasing sexier designs, unless I fear even adobe is not safe cos most editors would gradually drfit back to FCPX sad wen inferior products triumphs a superior one. Pls drop ur thoughts also ur opnions as editors in your location the general trend. I hate to be locked in a garden where I am told this is what I need. I love choices.

The 2 biggest problems with the new Mac Pro are the complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion and the Proprietary GPU modules. What happens when those Fire Pro cards are EOL and new GPU's are available. Will Apple go to any of the GPU manufacturers and get newer modules manufactured. Considering the applications that are moving to GPU processing, that was really a very bad idea simply because of the Minimum order quantity Apple will have to make to run another module. Apple will not be able to pull from the general video card supply which means they will be solely responsible for any production numbers required to manufacture to begin with. I personally expect this to be a major limitation as time goes on.
The complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion really was bad idea and not ready for prime time. TB2 has the total bandwidth of a PCI-E Gen 2 5x. That is the entire pipe available to pump any video output data, high performance storage, I/O devices, and any number of devices available as time goes on especially video cards. Those trying to GPU process through that pipe are going to find that latency is way to much a problem to get that done. If Lightpeak was out and had the bandwidth of PCi-E Gen 2 or Gen 3 16X then I would say great. There is just to small a pipe and to much device moderation at the TB controller to do this now. The major problem that will develop from this later is when Lightpeak is out for the PC and devices start moving there. Where will Apple be with the Mac Pro when it's entire expansion is legacy in 1 to 2 years. As a final note Thunderbolt 2 is just Thunderbolt 1 with 1 bidirectional channel in stead of 2 unidirectional. This is not a major improvement over the original.
The final consideration though not a major problem yet is the limit to 6 Core Xeons. This is likely due to the heat the 8 Core Xeons generate combined with a centralized cooling design. One of the major reasons to get a Dual Xeon is the 8 Core CPU options. Without that then there really is far less reason to get a Dual Xeon over a single 6 core and eventually 8 core workstation. This is a sacrifice that will reveal more later than now.
Considering the Mac Pro is meant to be the flagship platform for Apple's Pro market, there are really way to many limitations on this one to compete with the PC equivalents. There is only so much OSX will add to any system.

  • Just curious: What do you all guys use FCP for?

    Just wondering.
Does everybody work in TV or production companies. FCP is such a powerful tool... Only people working for TV networks and cables use it, right?

Sometimes it's used as a paperweight, sometimes it's used as a room heater. And sometimes I use it as my personal hair stylist, it gives me this little "gray" highlights! So many uses!
Back to your question, not necessarly. I've used it for Feature Films. I've worked on shows that were all offlined of FCP and Finished on Final Cut. some of them do their VFX I/O through Final Cut.
I've done work on 2 Feature Films on FCP. Blonde and Blonder and Christmas in Wonderland. So it goes beyond television and news.

  • What's your opinion about 5800 xpress music

should i get one or not ?

I am a 5800 owner...I will say this much, sift through the many topics in this forum.  I have had some issues with my 5800 mostly stability issues.  Most issue are mostly annoying and nothing too serious.  I will say ditto to the music portion of the phone...it is simply the best in terms of sound.  The speaker are loud and pretty clear for a cell phone and when listening through headphones it sounds almost like a dedicated MP3 player, although it could be a little louder.  For the money you will not find nearly as many features and capabilities in one device.
Again, the 5800 has some known issues and you can read through the topics to get an idea of what kind of issues there are and remember not every phone has issues.  For the money...I recommend it.

  • What's Your Opinion of Flash Use On a Corporate Website?

I was pretty much up to speed using Flash between the years 2001 and 2004. In 2003, I majored in video production and got out of step with the newer versions of Flash.  I've always liked Flash because to me it provides a more straight-forward visual workflow and flexibility.  I look at companies like 2advanced, who use a lot of Flash and wonder what they are thinking.  One article I found on the Net suggests that Apple's opposition to Flash is based upon lost revenues. They see the Flash *.flv/*.f4v video format as direct competition and a threat to iTunes and QuickTime. Other articles suggest that Flash is unstable and causes problems.  Personally, I can't remember ever having a problem with Flash website content other than problems related to the Flash designer using "heavy" content that takes too long to load. I launched my company's new website two weeks ago. It will be continually updated. I'm considering either buying a Project Seven image presentation product or designing the "portfolio" segment of my site in Flash. If I do it in Flash, I know that people won't be able to see it on the iPhone or iPad. Also I was told that some corporate networks disable Flash content.  Do you think that Apple has the power to kill Flash with their popular products, the iPhone and iPad?

I thought this would be an interesting development to follow and see how Apple responds:
Skyfire promises Flash video playback on its iPhone app

  • What is your opinion on short course Java training for beginners?

A 4-day Java training class is being offered to some here that have (0) Java experience. I don't remember who is offering the course, but it's ostensibly designed for beginners and the list of items to learn in these four days runs about like this:
    1) Download, setup and learn how to use the Java free SDK;
    2) Build robust Java applications;
    3) Learn about java Servlet containers ...
... Oh, heck, I don't know, but you get the picture, right?
I have my own opinions about such classes, but I'd like to hear what you all have to say, especially since I know a number of you are technical managers.
BTW - the programmers are smart and competent, but so far as I know have never worked with ANY OO language before.

~BillOuch! IMO, it would be more worth while to spend 4 days teaching about good OO design, independent of language, then to spend time teaching technically inclined people how to download an SDK or IDE, read docs, etc. Any good engineer should be able to pick up the basics of working with the technology well enough without much instruction. It's thinking about programming in a whole new paradigm that's going to be the struggle. That's where the effort should be spent.
    - AdamThat's exactly what I say.
Can I assume the term engineer is used loosely? Because none of us, to my knowledge can qualify as engineers ... either the Casey Jones type, or any other ;o). We're all simply application programmers here.Yeah, slip of the tongue. I tend to say engineer because I dislike the term "programmer". "Programmer" doesn't do a good job of expressing everything that is involved in what most of us do.
