JUST finding duplicate files/folders

Yes, I did my research.  Solutions are dated or otherwise un-satisfactory.  Does anyone know of a CURRENT app. that will find duplicte files and folders (preferably by name, not necessarily size) and list them without immediately sending something to the trash?  What I need it for is this:  I have an external hard drive that I've manually backed things up to over the years, and there are different "versions" of the same files.  I want to get rid of the older ones and keep the most updated ones.  Does that make sense?  If you need more info, ask.  Anybody got an idea?

Yeah, unfortunately that was how the action was programmed - to only accept two folders to compare at a time.
Honestly, I re-reviewed your earlier posts, and what you want is the most recent version of the files right?
As you have 4 folders, then what I think you should do is the following:
1. First select the first two folders and run the below workflow:
What this will do is synch both of them so that the most recent files are there. Then all you have to do is delete one of them as they will be DUPLICATES.
2. Then select the OTHER TWO FOLDERS with the same workflow above and sync them. Then delete one of the folders.
3. Now you only have two folders left to sync. Run the workflow on those two folders and delete one of them.
There you go, and you will end up with ONE folder that has all the most recent versions of the files.
You should test it first, but it should work.
Good luck.

  • How to find duplicate files in Finder with Automator or Apple ScriptEditor

Can anyone tell me how to find duplicate files in Finder with Automator or Apple ScriptEditor.

D'oh!  It's actually fairly easy - I just right clicked on the file, Get Info, Artwork tab, then dragged the picture to the desktop, from where I can do what I like with it.  Never mind, nothing to see here, carry on.

  • Find duplicate files?

Is there an easy way to find duplicate files built into Lion? I use Dupe Guru  but it doesn't find all the duplicates. Any suggestions?

There is no such utility built-into OS X. Besides Dupe Guru you might try Gemini or Twins - both available through the Mac App Store.

  • How do I find duplicate files?

I am guessing this is a simple answer, and I apologize for not knowing it, but I want to ask. What's the easiest and best way to see if you have duplicate files?
I am reorganizing a couple very big picture folders into smaller subfolders and am sure there are dupes amongst the big folders I am moving them from. Manually moving specific pics to specific small folders, and keep running into dupes. Is there a way to see dupes ahead of time so I can eliminate them?

Not directly but there are several third-party shareware utilities that locate duplicates. You'll find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Why can't I just find by file name

Can you just find something the 'old' way instead of all this 'metadata' stuff.? Mac's alleged help file is no help.

The first half of this post refers to 10.4 and above only, if you have 10.3.5 as your profile says, follow the second half:
Well not exactly the old way, since Find File is now tied to Spotlight, but you can still use Find File in the File menu of the Finder. You can still tell Find File that all you want to do is search by name.
If for some reason Spotlight hasn't indexed it, an index free search is available from EasyFind:
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html
Edit: your profile says you have 10.3.5. 10.3.5 doesn't have Spotlight. Just use Find file in the File menu.
In the future when asking a question on 10.3, post on the 10.3 and earlier forum, so someone doesn't give you the wrong advice. Here's that forum:

  • IBook need a diet. How to find biggest files/folders?

Hi -- this may seem like a silly question, but is there a way to search for the largest files/folders on my iBook (latest version of Tiger)? I'd like to find the offending bloat and get rid of it.
A couple of weeks ago, I had 20GB left, now I've got 14GB, and I don't know what I've done to get there. I've done the "get info" thing on various folders, but haven't found any that are particularly bloated.
Is there an app (preferably freeware, natch.) that can search for apps/files/folders by size? Or is this a capability that's already in Tiger?
    Thanks!

You can also use Terminal to find big directories.
The following command finds the top-10 directories:
    du -S | sort -nr | head
Please note that I am using the fink version of du.

having count(*) > 1;Ought to do it.

  • Finder can't find old files/folders prior to SL update from Leopard

    Hello.
I'm having problems with Finder tool. I've read some topics and even tried some terminal commands to no avail. My wife's account can't find her quicken files prior to update. She is a well organized person and now has to go into the folders to find the files instead of a quick spotlight seach.
Will I have to restore her profile again from timecapsule? How can I get finder to find right again?
A little more details of upgrade: I've got 2 machines, and Imac and a macbook. The 2nd one is ok. On it I did the upgrade straght on top of the old system. On the Imac the procedure was different. I set the machine to zero and put SL and then pulled the timecapsule backup, that was still on Leopard. Would that cause a confloct on finder? Only the Imac can't find the older files, prior to the update.
I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
If there's and easier way to restore the finder's abililites to find, I'd surelly apreciate it. Saves me a lot of trouble having all done again on the Imac.
    Thx

I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
    Best move.

yesterday i trashed itunes. anyway got this program to recover the music from the ipod. went to transfer music and only did part of them because im out of disk space. so i went from having 35 GB empty to 3.6 MB.
i need to know how do i track down the old music files to delete them??
when i first lost the library, i went in and tried to transfer the files in the music library to itunes. when i dragged it over, i saw the transfer start and got an error mess that itunes needed to be restarted. when i restarted, the the music library folder is empty ans so is itunes but the files are still taking up space. obviously still taking up space. where is it?? how do i find it, what can i do to remove the duplicate files?
i have already done the disk repair, etc.

    Hi,

  • HT1338 I want to find duplicate files..

    Hello,
When i search with Spotlight for files ending in " 1.m4a" to locate duplicates, it shows results; but when i click on 'show all files in finder', finder shows no files..
Am i missing something? I just want to remove the duplicates...
I have a brand new i7 mac mini, with a 2tb external HDD Mac formatted.

While deleting from a search is perhaps not the best way to remove duplciate files as it doesnt provide a lot of obvious info about where the files came from, you should be able to perform the same search in the Finder using the search bar at the top of any Finder window, and then selecting to search "This Mac" at the top of the window.

  • Tuff Question: How to create an XML file of Finder items (files & folders)

if you have an ideas on how i can do this please let me know. The goal is have an XML file that has an <item> list for all files and folders in the finder (even the hidden ones) that looks something like this:
    <Item>
    <kind>Folder</kind>
    <name>Applications</name>
    <size>800 MB </size>
    <where></where>
    </item>
    <item>
    <kind>Folder</kind>
    <name>Utilities</name
    <size>195.5 MB<size>
    <where>/Applications<where>
    </item>
    thanks
    chris

If you are any good at Vim, you can rip and kill this fairly quickly using Terminal and some shell commands.

  • Finding duplicate files

Can anyone recommend a good shareware or freeware app to find and delete duplicate (or triplicate or sextuplicate) files on a hard drive running Snow Leopard?

Actually, I was simply trying to save myself time by asking if anyone could recommend a specific one. It's a common method in the online community and one that, in the past, has proven fruitful for me. I don't believe I had asked anyone "to do that for" me. On this thread, cwog posted a recommendation for TidyUp, which I downloaded and from which I had good results. Next time you're looking for an app, try asking for a recommendation here. I think you'll find that people will help you out.

  • Script to automatically duplicate files/folders?

I can't search this on Google because of all of the "duplicate removal" scripts, so I'm asking:
I have a folder that is changed very often that is not very large. I need to keep backups of it frequently (I'd say twice or thrice a day). Currently, I just regularly go to it and press CMD+D, but that requires manual control of course.
Is there a way with Automator, Applescript, shell scripts, or even Pascal to automatically DUPLICATE the folder at intervals so that it also keeps the old versions? Like exactly how a human would keep using CMD+D. It would say "folder copy" then "folder copy 1" then "folder copy 2" etc... I don't know how to send a "duplicate" command to Finder using these scripts.

    nvm found it
