Thanks Charlie and Leroydouglas - apologies for not responding sooner - I am new to the Community and couldn't see how to respond to your queries without 'replying' to myself - hope this works.  I do not use Windows on my Mac but it is possible I ran ScanDisk on my previous Windows laptop.  Perhaps I have inadvertently brought these files to my Mac??  Can I delete the files or will I be losing something I cannot verify?  So appreciate your input - thank you.

  • HELP"apple application support not found when installing itunes after a hard drive crash and replace

HELP"   error "apple application support not found" when downloading itunes after a hard drive crash and replacement????

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

I have a 13" macbook from 2009 and for some reason can no longer change my desktop image by just clicking on an image in system prererences>I-Photo. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Your Desktop Picture settings and Dock items are stored in the files
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
in the "Preferences" folder in your user library. This looks like the system has trouble to write to these files. Check the permissions on your user library and remove the above files from your user library, then log off and on again.
Your user library is hidden in Lion and Mt. Lion. To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Add the corrected ones to your PS - PS contains only what was added to it - changes made are not applied to the PS - you have to re add the updated photos

My eight year old was on my iPad and bought $130 worth of apps.  How do I get these reimbursed?  I don't even know what they are????

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
While I agree that it would be nice if it was easier to transfer media from your Apple devices they should never be used as the sole location for any of your media. They are too easily lost, stolen, damaged, or corrupted. The user tip above also includes a link to a suggested library backup strategy so that you can avoid being in the same position in future.

  • 500 GB Junk Files on Boot Hard Drive Hidden and can't access

Can someone tell me how to find and trash these hidden files.  I tried third party software and they don't show up nor do they show up on a spotlight search including invisible files . I have a 2T Hard drive and it is filled up with about 500GB of hidden files having roughly the following name
    "Volumes/Mirrors (45) From My Passport/Nikon Probably All Dups From My Passport on 120823/120612 Temporary hold for transferred from #02/Autosave Vault/Lesson 12 Project/Lesson 12 Project_10-06-08_1730"
Above is a single line from ChronoSync.  They, of course, are not the same name past "autosaveVault" and there are about 1700 of them. Every single one has is same up to "AutosaveVault".  I found them by backing up the hard drive with ChronoSync and going into the log.  Fortunately they were almost at the very end of the 24 plus hour backup. And, the first stuff that was backed up was actually known data and the discrepancy did not occur until the know data was virtually all backed up.
I have a disk drive labled Mirrors (45) that I erase but before that they seemed to exist on, but I really don't think it was 500GB. I don't know if I erased "Mirror (45)"  by reoformatting or just trashing the files. I never have used the word autosave Vault either. I recognize the file names and folders beyond Autosave.
I have not been able to view, let alone delete these files on the boot drive which has a little over 1.5T of "data" thats shown as actually exisitng in the file command.
I am pretty certain this is related to the Mavericks upgrade but not positive. I do know I have another backup drive with mountain Lion that was last backedup about a week before what has been a huge diaster with Mavericks, and there may be less then 50GB "hidden" on it but its hard to tell.
The storage report from "about this Mac"  is 40GB shy of 48GB show as free that is free space should be 88GB if you believe "about this Mac"

Get free OmniDiskSweeper and run as root. Open Terminal and copy/paste and hit return. Give your admin pword when requested, which won't appear as you type it in. Hit return again.
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    See also http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
Note, be very careful when running as root, since this will give you unfettered access to all critical system files.

  • My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

  • Two files I don't know what they are.

I'm a fairly new Mac owner who switched from the dreaded pc. If I could marry my MacBook Pro I probably would except I think it's illegal to marry inanimate objects in the state of Wisconsin.
There are two files in the Macintosh HD folder; dbg.gz / Apr 19, 2009 / gzip compressed archive and test.txt / Apr 18, 2009 / Plain text. When I open the plain text file is says initClientSocket. I would like to delete these files if I don't need them or if I do can I hide these?
    Thanks for your time.

I moved these to trash. Should I for any reason not totally delete these?
there is absolutely no reason to keep them for anything.
Or just remove them all together?
    yes.

  • I just had to have my toshiba laptop hard drive replaced and I am unable to move my itunes library from my ipad back to the laptop.  It says it is linked to another library  and I can only transfer purchased music etc and not the rest of the library.Help!

I have just had my Toshiba laptop hard drive replaced. This has resulted in all previous content held on the laptop to be lost.   I wanted to try and transfer my music library from my ipad to the laptop, but it will not allow me to do so.  The message is that the ipad is linked to another computer and it will only allow the transfer of the items purchased on through the ipad and nothing else.  Does anyone know if the full library can be transferred back to the computer?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • How do I open compressed old files to view them before I delete,I have alot of space taken up with these files but I dont know what they are and if they are important.

I have just started using the computer and have no idea what old compressed files are or if they are important,so I have not deleted any ,and now they are taking up alot of space.

You should have the old Pages '08 inside the iWork folder, inside your Applications folder.
Open your old files in Pages '08 > Menu > File > Export > Word
Pages 5 can then open that Word file.

  • Hard Drive Replaced and Don't Know How to Reinstall My Music Library

    Hi Everyone,
I recently had a problem with my computer and the hard drive was replaced. I had previously backed up my itunes music (some purchased from itunes, and some formatted from my own cds) on cds, but when I reinstalled the itunes software on the new hard drive, and then copied my music files to my pc hard drive, itunes doesn't connect the two and doesn't recognize the music as being registered to this computer. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am most concerned about the music I loaded from my own cds, that are now itunes formatted. I no longer have the original cds.
    Thanks so much! Jeana

I'm sorry, but I don't really know how to answer your question. One day I was working on my pc (not with iTunes) and it shorted and I couldn't reboot it. Working with my service contract personnel, we did some tests, and they determined the hard drive was damaged.
They authorized me to ship it back. When it was repaired, the hard drive had been replaced, so I had to re-load all my software. This is where I am now. I never de-authorized my pc. It's the same pc, but with a new hard drive and no history. Thanks for any help you can give.
    Jeana
