Just get me started...

I have this code for setting up my navigation. It works
absolutely fine like it is, but I want to be able to change my
arrays from OUTSIDE flash. Is it possible for me with this code to
make it with XML or is it built in a way that makes that hard? I'm
not an expert but think this is a good way for me to understand the
whole deal with XML and arrays and such. What do you say, is it
worth the while to try to implement XML and can someone just get me
started on this? Thanks.

  • Starting a website- just get me started

I want to create a website for my video business.... but, am sitting here a little clueless.
Never had a mobile me account (except to use for my "find my iphone"), which is going away mid-2012 anyway to my understanding.
So, it appears, iWeb is being discontinued as well.  But, since I already have the program, it will continue to work for me.  Of course, "work" is a loose term as I really haven't put it to work yet.
I have played around with the different pages, and have more fine tuning to do.  But, I don't necessarily want to put loads of time into something if I am going to have to switch gears (not use iWeb for some reason).
    These are my assumptions:
I can create my website in iWeb.
Once it's complete, I will want to find a host (such as iPage or BlueHost), which all charge between $3.50-$8/month - some are promotional rates)
Is there any additional upfront costs, such as a domain name fee to claim a www.#####.com address?  Or is your website based on what the host offers?
Do I need to worry about storage space allowed on a domain server?  I am going to want to have photos and video on there (assuming though that I'd want lower resolution else it might take too long for downloading).  Or do they pretty much all allow unlimited storage space?
Email isn't as big of a deal... but, I suppose if I can get an email that ties in with the www.#####.com address, that'd seem much more professional.  I wouldn't need more than one.
Is there a host that is best for the services I need?
Is there a way to have some photos or video only available if a person has a particular login username and password, or somehow a unique website name so it isn't so easy for anyone to see photos or video that I have posted for one family?
What concern would I have if said videos have copyrighted music on them?  I am not going to be this big conglomerate like Olan Mills (nationwide) that will have tons of hits... I am a local person providing services in the area.
Is the username/password something iWeb can handle or is it something within the domain server I'd be further manipulating?
Business name.... is there any concern on your business name?

Copyright is copyright whether you site is small or large. Music licensing is not that expensive and there's also lots of royalty free music around. Licensing info can be obtained from any of the major performing right societies...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/DistributeandPromote/CopyrightPublishing.html
When I went to BMI, it appears I'd want a license that seems to cost $335/year (plus a fee on number of hits on my website) just to have music on my website (at least I think that's the license I'd need).  I am just starting out.... and outright paying $335 out of pocket seems expensive.  If I had a client base, then maybe it'd seem minute.  So, unless I am mistaken, this seems expensive to me when I have no capital to speak of.  Of course, then, I might need an additional license to actually distribute the videos I create? (and, does this cover any number of songs I have on my website, whether individually linked or somehow integrated into an example video, which usually has 1-3 songs in it?)
I do memorial videos (birth to death) slideshows to show at funerals.  Do the birth to graduation slideshow for graduation open houses, etc.  I've really only done for family and friends of family at this point.  I had also videotaped my nephew's wedding and created a DVD using the footage.  But, would like a website to advertise my work to local area (1 hour radius).  Or, even a place for an established client to preview the work before I burn to DVD.
But, ideally, this would be a place that someone could refer to learn more about what I do, some examples, some music selection that would be appropriate for each type of video (graduation, 90th birthday party, anniversary, wedding, engagement, funeral, and so on) with "links" to the actual music I have on iTunes.
My business may go nowhere and I may only do a few a year.  I, of course, want to earn money for my time.  But, I don't want a lot of overhead costs having to be included in my fee-I want to keep costs low for my clients.  And, unselfishly, my ultimate goal is for others to chronicle their memories in another creative way -economically in the current economy as it is now.
So, I am telling you my intent so maybe you could give a more detailed view on what is the most economical and lawful way to go.
    Thanks for your help!

If there is no loading bar, it's usually a problem with a third party kext file in OS X itself.
You can press the power button down to force a hardware shutdown, then reboot holding the shift key down on a wired or built in keyboard, this will disable them and you go around and update your third party software.
Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
Also take this time to backup your users files off the machine if possible.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Sometime that won't work and you need to do more

I just upgraded to the New OS on my Mac Book Pro and now my trackpad does not zoom in or out.  I looked at system settings on trackpad and it is set, but does not work How do I get it started?

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

    Millietrixie-
Are you trying to call yourself to test FaceTime?  If so, you must have a second E-Mail address registered with your Apple ID.  In other words, there must be a different E-Mail address on each unit.

Try going to System Preferences>Security & Privacy and under the General tab...
...select "Anywhere". Note that you'll need to use an admin account to access these settings.

my iphone just shut down and i cannot get it started again

    Hey Barry,
It really depends on the circumstances.  If you haven't powered your phone off yourself for quite some time, sometimes kinks can just happen and this sounds like one of them.  Every so often on mine I will have to use this method but it is in the very minority of occasions.

  • Updated to Mavericks and the new version of iPhoto starts to install but just gets to 10.2MB and starts all over and then comes up with an error message

I installed Mavericks to my computer and iPhoto isn’t working it has a grey no working symbol over it.  So I tried to download the new version of iPhoto but it starts to download and just gets to 10.2MB and starts all over after about 3 mins of doing this it comes up with an error message saying  an error had occurred.  I have tried downloading several times restarting the computer and downloading and still get the same thing over and over again.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

on start up i just get a grey screen with the apple logo-this has suddenly started happenin. Please help?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • In start up just get blue screen

when starting my computer I just get a blue screen nothing else loads.

This may work.  Try holding the shift key down and then press the power button.  Keep holding the shift key until you see a progress bar on the screen.  If you get a login in.  Log in.  Once logged in do a re-start.  Your startup cache will be rebuilt.  The shift key starts you up in Safe Mode.  If you were able to startup in Safe Mode but not with the re-start,  you have something in your account startup items that's giving you a problem (under apple, system preferences, account).

  • I got a virus in my email on my IPAD the date was of the email was from 1969.  It started mutlipling and them wied out all my email accounts it seems to just be locked.  I just get a blank screen in email.  What do I do?

My IPAD 2 got a virus in my email.  The date of the email was from 1969.  It started mulltipling and just wiped out all my email accounts.  I just get a blank screen in email and it apears to be locked.  What can I do?

    It's not a virus.
Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e.not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
