Just got back

I just got back from basically spending the entire day at the apple store. I made an appointment with an apple genius and showed him my problem. He said that this is a problem and that we will give you a new one. So I went back to my house to grab my box, thank goodness that I still have it. So they setup my new macbook pro with my documents they moved over to the new one. They asked me to see if I am satisfied so I fired up the computer. After doing so I noticed that I have the same problem as my last macbook had. Once apple employee said that this sound is natural and all of the macbooks have them. But then I thought for a couple seconds thinking that not all have this whining noise. So I guess the only thing that I have left is to call apple about this problem.
All the apple store was willing to do was give me a 15 inch powebook or I can be out on my way as to the fact that I will have that same annoying whine. I now have a the week 11 macbook pro now.

it is possible the keyboard was not reconnected properly when it was repaired.
Check that the keyboard is connected properly to the main board. Use these instructions to lift up the keyboard and have a look.
Does the ibook respond to any startup commands such as zapping your PRAM
How To Reset your PRAM
If the keyboard does not respond to any startup commands then I would suggest wait till Friday and take it back to the genius bar.

  • Just got back from the Apple Store...optical drive officially dead

    I just got back from the Apple Store, which confirmed what I feared all along. I received my MBP C2D over the holidays and was worried when it had trouble booting up several times. After trying to burn a few cds (some would quit, others worked fine), and a few discs that refused to read or eject I visited the boards to find out that issues with the Matshita UJ 587 were widespread. At this point my computer does not even recognize the ATA or Disc Burning hardware or the OSX disc inside. The only positive to come out of this is the customer service offered by Apple. I took the computer to the genius bar and the computer refused to boot up after the tech installed an OSX disc (hence the stuck cd inside). They are giving me a new computer since this one is brand new, but unfortunately I will have to order it from Apple Care since it is a custom job. For all of you out there with early MBP C2D optical drives that are acting up I feel your pain. Get your computer into an Apple store before the problem gets worse, these optical drives are awful.

    Thank you. After 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care this morning they finally confirmed what the Mac Genius told me last night. The computer was shipped back this afternoon and I'll post again if there's any trouble with the new unit, I think I just got a lemon with this one...too bad. This is my first Mac so I'm really trying hard to stay positive.

    You should have turned your MBP off!  Keeping it on sleep w/o use for 3 weeks makes no sense.  As others have already stated, you will need to take your comp to a repair shop.  More than likely you need a new battery.

  • Just got back from buying the iPhone

    Just got back from the Apple Store, and finally got the 8 GB iPhone. I've heard the stories, read the discussion boards, but I love Apple products so I'm making the shift. I put the clear protector that I bought a few weeks back on before I even touched the screen (great product). I have a Vaja case on its way, should be here Thursday so I think I will wait to activate it until then (should be fun looking at the iPhone on my desk every day not being able to use it).
    I'm going to be syncing to 2 computers like a lot of other people I have read. My Outlook 2007 from XP for my contacts & calendar and my PowerBook for my music, movies, and media.
    I'm switching wireless carriers, also, so those of you actually HAPPY with their iPhone, that's what I need to be hearing right now. Sorry for the post, just excited to finally get this thing!

    ted v.

    Have you uninstalled all old drivers? Check that the card is inserted 00% in the pci slot? Change Pci slot? Update bios, and chipset drivers. Maybe if nothing else helps, try re-installing Windows or the OS you are using!! Hope something hel

  • Just got back from Paris and Israel and this update got my iphone 5 in recovery mode !!! please somebody tell me that I did not loose all my pics and videos !!!

    Please somebody help me !!!! I just got back from Paris and Israel and this update got my iphone 5 in recovery mode. I can't loose all my pics and videos from my vacations ??????????????????????????????????

    NOO it's not broken it is a software error. What you need to do is put your phone into what is called DFU mode or Device Firmware Upgrade Mode. What you have to do is connect your phone to itunes but do not start the sync process. Ignore any popups from itunes initially. When you are connected to itunes take your phone and hold down the home button and power button at the same time. Hold them down for about 30 seconds or so and you should see your device screen rollover to the black screen and disconnect from itunes once this happens it will reboot and automatically connect to iTunes, after this happens start the restore process through itunes and it should continue past the error message.
    * Also before you do this try ejecting your sim card if you have the at&t model if you are on Verizon ignore this. There is a small oval port on the right side of the phone with a small pinhole. Use a paperclip and insert it into the hole, the door will pop open. Take the door out, remove the sim card and wait 5 minutes then return the sim card back into the phone and begin the above process.
    If none of this works you may just want to bring it the genius bar and have them look at it. Good Luck and I hope this helps!

  • Just got back from Pinnacle Edition 5  launch

    This kind of doesn't belong in here, but I can't justify putting it in the edit forum either, so this will have to do.
    I took myself along to the Pinnacle Edition v5 product launch today, just to see what people were doing with the latest in NLE. I have to admit, it was very impressive.
    While it did turn out like all product launches (showed the features they wanted you to see, didn't bother with the ones you wanted to see) it was interesting to see some of the features that will now be expected of NLE's in this market.
    I won't go into detail about what they showed us of the program except to say that Premiere's got a lot of catching up to do.
    Which brings me to my next point. We all know that the new version of Premiere can't be that far away. And for the most part the features to expect have had to be measured by what the competition's put into their current versions, then hope that they get topped. All I can say is that if we don't start hearing soon what to look out for, there's going to be a bunch of people getting out of Premiere, and into some of these other programs. We've already seen it with Vegas to an extent. This new program just pushes it further.
    I have to admit that given the upgrade options the thought of making the switch is very tempting, and economical.

    The thing about Edition 5 is that it really doesn't live up to its potential until you get the Pro version which includes an AGP card that Edition feeds off of. The problem with that is this AGP card is
    i an AGP card
    which therefore means you can't use anything but this AGP card for your GPU, and its an outdated Radeon 8500 with no dual moniter suppport.
    I own Edition 4.5 (a Pinnacle tech spotted me a copy) and
    i never
    use it. I tried it out for a while but the interface is so unyielding and unintuitive. I got the impression that if I could make my brain work the way Edition wanted it to I would have a pretty powerful tool on my hands, but my brain just didn't want to work that way. And the GUI is depressing!
    Another drag is that while this is the same basic editing system of their high end liquid line, the fact is that makes it just a crippled NLE in many ways since it can't possibly do what it was meant to do in liquid form. Who wants a crippled NLE?
    Add to that the prospect that if enough people don't buy into this new NLE it could be dead in a couple of years and you've got enough reasons to be weary of Edition, at least until Premiere 7 drops.

  • Just got back from exchanging my Touch

    So I had the negative screen issue with a 737 model of the Touch. I just exchanged it and they gave me a 736 one. Should I just not even open it and wait until i can get a 738? Has anyone got a 736 without an issue? Thanks in advanced.

    ouch, i just returned mine to a twin cities,MN apple store, tonight,,, they still have week 37 ones. bummer, cause i had a somewhat hard time replacing it, they didn't replace it because of the blacks, but because the brightness was low compared to other displays. my new one looks worse than my old one hopefully there is an official serial number recall) i hope it isn't hard to return this one. i'm going to wait a few weeks though so newer models ship. it would be nice if the brick and mortar stores would receive some word eventually, i asked if anyone else had a problem and they hadn't heard of any issues what so ever.

  • Just got back from the Apple store RE: wifi problems. No fix in sight.

    I took my iPad into the Apple store this afternoon because of the wifi issues I've been having. The problem I'm having is that the connection frequently drops and I get a message that says "Incorrect Wifi Password". This has been happening a TON lately and is getting really annoying.
    The genius at the Apple store tested my iPad on their network and couldn't replicate the problem. Therefore, he concluded that the iPad is not defective. He talked a lot about router technology and basically said that every other router and network other than what's at the Apple store is old technology, that's why it doesn't work. This is an unacceptable answer. He offered no fix or remedy for the problem.
    I asked him if Apple is working on a remedy and he said they are NOT because there is NO PROBLEM.
    Judging by what I've read on here and experienced, there IS A PROBLEM APPLE!
    Since he was convinced that my device is functioning properly and also that Apple is not going to provide a fix or update to address the wifi issues, I asked about the return policy. He said I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A RESTOCKING FEE BECAUSE MY DEVICE IS NOT DEFECTIVE! <--- can you tell I'm yelling??!!
    I asked him to help me understand how a device is not defective that can't function as intended on any network other than an Apple network. He said if my iPad works in the store, it's not defective and I'd have to pay the 10% restocking fee.
    This is really really not what I expected from Apple, not at all. Since the Apple genius told me that Apple doesn't recognize that this is a problem, and that Apple is NOT working on a fix for it, I am going to return my device to Best Buy this afternoon.
    I'm really not happy about this because I really love this device, but it's just not usable if it keeps dropping connections.
    I'm having a sad Friday.

    Good heavens, I can understand why you're having a bad day - and in essence you are absolutely right, if your iPad doesn't work with your network and other devices do, then the iPad is the problem. After all, if you go to Starbucks, a hotel, airport, hotspots provided by cities or any vendors, you can't ask them to replace their routers if you can't connect. It's not your job to resolve infrastructure problems, but it is Apple's to ensure the device is compatible with the infrastructure which exists.
    However:
    This is really really not what I expected from Apple, not at all. Since the Apple genius told me that Apple doesn't recognize that this is a problem, and that Apple is NOT working on a fix for it, I am going to return my device to Best Buy this afternoon.
    I would urge you not to believe this genius speaks for Apple as an authority on the subject. Even if right at this moment, the more complaints, calls and returns they have for wifi faults, the more they will react to the problem, because they have no choice. What they generally won't do (based on past experience) is announce publicly that there is a problem, but it doesn't mean they are not collecting and reviewing data and researching potential solutions.
    So, before you return your iPad - and might face the debate on restocking fees - call Apple and discuss the problem, if necessary escalating the call to the next tier up until you get someone who can help you work through it, or arrange for a timely replacement, or a return without you having to face a penalty. Apple are typically very good in customer service, as the surveys show, but that isn't always the case in the early stages of a fault where the issues are not yet clear.
    Good luck!

  • Just got back from odtug, where's the data modeling?

    I could just have not been paying attention, but I thought in one of Sue Harper's presentations she demonstrated the data modeling feature that I've seen a little mentioned about on here. Was that just a sneak peak of what to come or am I just looking over it in 1.5.1?

    Yep - Sue was giving us a sneak peek at a new feature now under development. She said (with the usual caveats about dates) that she hoped to have something more to show, and maybe to try by the time of Oracle Open World. The modeling feature is not in the current version.
    If you need modeling right now, I suggest that you install JDeveloper. Its modeling tools are pretty good, though it stores metadata in XML files, not in a database. A database for metadata is the major advantage that the coming modeling tool for SQL Developer will have.

  • Just got back from the O2 store, iPhone activated, sync'd and....

    I gotta say, its awesome. Even better than I was expecting.
    I know this isnt a support question but its positive feedback.
    I did my research before I bought the phone, so I new what it did/didnt do.
    Activation was a breeze and Im just blown away, its amazing!

    I had the same trouble-free start up (once Carphone Warehouse had finally processed my sale – that took just under 50 minutes). It's everything I hoped for. Magnificent.

  • [SOLVED] Just got back to my Arch machine - problems

    So, after about a month of not having Internet access, I booted my Arch system today to update everything but of course, I have some problems that are keeping me from doing that.  I have Gnome as my DE and when I boot up, I can log in just fine but when I get to the Desktop, I can't click on anything.  The mouse moves just fine, the icons even change shade when I put the cursor over them like they can be clicked on but clicking on them does nothing.  I have to launch everything with the keyboard, which isn't such a big deal but it's a bit of a nuisance.
    The other thing that's bothering me is I have no internet access.  I am behind a different router now with an IP of 192.168.1.1 (instead of 192.168.0.1) and I made the appropriate change in the ROUTE variable in rc.conf but it hasn't done anything.  I even tried manually adding the default route to the routing table with
    #route add -net default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
    but that doesn't seem to have done anything either.  I have an IP address but I can't ping the router.  Oh yeah, and network is listed as a daemon in rc.conf.  This is, of course, keeping me from updating my system using pacman.
    I may have other problems too but these are the two biggest that I need to get sorted out ASAP so your advice is appreciated.  Here is my xorg.conf and a list of processes that are running after boot up.

    Hello,
    I am behind a router and had to do only very minor tweaks to get it going: just enter the value of the gateway and remove the ! before gateway within the routes variable. Here is the (expanded) relevant part of my rc.conf, I hope it helps you:
    # Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available
    # interfaces.
    # Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
    # - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
    # Note: to use DHCP, set your interface to be "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
    gateway="default gw 10.0.0.2"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    # Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
    # if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
    # - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up (dialog package required)
    # - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
    # Network profiles are found in /etc/network-profiles
