Just got "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

I tried opening a clients TIF file about 30 minutes ago and after it opened in Photoshop, I got a box that says "Could not complete your request because of a program error"
I hit OK and it pops back up. Over and over and over and over. I shut down everything and rebooted. Same thing after the reboot. I force quit Photoshop and tried opening some other little JPG file. Same error after it opened.
I have not upgraded anything recently. Not sure what to do. At this point, Photoshop just wont work with ANY files. HALP!
Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 (part of the CS3 suite)
OSX 10.5.4
Dual 2.5 G5
Need some help. Thanks,
Chris

This is the entire contents of that file (which, although being a .txt file... tried to open in Photoshop for some reason)

  • Error:  "Could not complete your request because of a program error" (photoshop CS2 9.0.2 on MAC OSX

Today I started my program (photoshop CS2 9.0.2) and opened a JPG file. When I went to print the file the program crashed and closed. When I restarted the program and went to open the file I got this error message, "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
I have tried several different file types/sizes and all result in the same error message since the program crashed. It will not open any file I try to open. As I indicated above I am using Photoshop CS2 9.0.2 it is on a MAC with OSX 10.4.11.
I called Adobe and the Rep directed me to Tech Note 331307 and told me to Re-create the Photoshop preferences files. Which I did and restarted the program, but when I tried to open a file (any file) I still get the same error message so it doesn't appear to be the preferences.
Does anyone have any info as to what the problem may be and how to correct it.
    Thanks

Thanks for the response. OK... This is the first day I have been able to get back to the problem.
My system I am running Photoshop on is a Power Mac G4, AGP Graphics ATY Rage 128Pro chip set 16MB VRAM LCD 1280x1024 32-bit color, 500MHz, 1.75GB of memory, 1 MB L2 Cache, 100 MHz Bus Speed. I had installed the latest security update and repaired the permissions the day the problem started.
Now to day I started the system and went in and created a Guest Account. I logged into the guest account and started Photoshop. Low and behold it worked just fine. So I logged out of guest and logged into my main user account And started Photoshop. Wouldn't you know it.... It works just fine. I can open any file I want with now problems.
I got to thinking after I had done all of this that I wished I had tried to open a file in Photoshop today prior to creating the guest account to see if it still had the problem in my main user account.
I did not change anything else on the system and all seems to work fine now. So at his point I am really not sure what the problem was.
Again thanks for taking the time to respond to this issue.

  • Could not complete your request because of a program error photoshop cs4

My first frustration right now is that I can't search the forums... anyone got an answer to that? on the right hand side (if I'm logged in) I type in a search for anything and it always shows no search results found! Why? is the search function not working?
Anyway, my problem is that when I try to save a multi-layered psd file into psd or jpg I get this error message: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
    What is causing it?
I checked for updates and PS is up-to-date. I restarted, and it worked great for about 3 saves (different pictures). (I'm basically running through some shots and just doing a quick levels and curves adjustment and running an action putting in my name watermark.)
After that quick edit and trying to save - same error message again.
It started suddenly yesterday - after having used PS for about 1.5 years without a problem. I haven't done any changes to it as far as I'm aware.
Any one seen this before, or have a solution to this?
    Thanks!
    Computer specs:
    Windows 7 Pro - 64-bit
    12 GB Ram
750 GB OS hdd where PS is installed
2 TB Media drive where the files are being pulled up from/saved to.
    Intel i7 x980 3.33 GHz
GeForce GTX 470 with 1280 MB dedicated memory
    Logged in as administrator.

Did you update or change or plug-in or remove anything else on your computer just before it happened?  Photoshop relies on other system libraries to do things and maybe one of those changed.
No, I did not change anything; I was editing pictures - from a quadding trip where they asked me to shoot for them - and suddenly I started getting the message on most pictures.
Hard drives are not nearly full. (.99 TB free on media drive and 588 GB free on OS {C} Drive)
scandisk error check? I probably need that.. (I've had some problems with BSOD and had the BIOS corrupted recently that I had to flash the BIOS again. Could that cause something like this?)
How do you reset preferences? Is it the Ctrl + Shift + Alt key immediately after PS starts? I did that and it didn't fix it.
Saving in odd location? No, I don't think so; I save to the same place I save other stuff and I have a solid directory base and I always follow the same procedures. I save back into the same folder I open the file from and save back to the same filename + "edit". That way I can compare side by side and have a backup copy of the file.
The only USB device plugged into the computer is a logitech wireless combo of keyboard and mouse. (And a wired USB keyboard that sits to the side and that I use only when the batteries in my wireless dies.
I can't think of anything that has changed that would cause PS to act like this.
If I can't get it working soon, I'll re-install. I have the Production Premium CS4 version - can I just reinstall PS or would I have to do the whole suite?
    Thanks!
PS. I don't know if I was clear enough on what I'm doing: I open anywhere from 1 - 20 pictures at once, and then do a quick level or curve adjustment and save to a different file name. The confusing thing is - some pictures I have no problem with, but others - even though I do exactly the same thing - this error message comes up. I'd say about half of my 107 pictures from the quadding trip refused to save.
It almost makes it seem like some pictures are corrupt or something - and yet, I'd be really surprised to have soo many corrupted images suddenly.

  • Photoshop CS5 "Could not complete your request because of a program error." on Save As

    Hello all,
We just got a new iMac with 10.9 on it.  Photoshop CS5 is having a major problem.  About 80% of the time we get an error on Save As, "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
It appears like it might be related to saving JPEGs, as we get the message when saving as JPEG and Photoshop PDF.  Saving as Photoshop and PNG work fine.
    Running 10.9.3
    Photoshop CS5
Creative Cloud is also installed on this machine.

Alright, something on your system is causing odd problems.
Third party plugins would be the first suspect.  If you have third party plugins, disable them.
Corrupt font files or corrupt OS font cache would be the second.
See this for tips to troubleshoot font issues:  http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html
After those 2 causes, it would have to be something invoked, like a scanner or printer driver.
Then we get to bad installs, bad RAM, bad CPU, etc.

  • Constant: Could not complete your request because of a program error

    Hi Guys,
Last week I upgraded from CS3 Design Premium to CS4 Design Premium, everything is working perfectly bar Photoshop 11.0.1
I am running OSX 10.5.8 on a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 5.5GB ram
I am getting the error message "Could not complete your request because of a program error" repeatedly when using PS or even if I just launch it and have it run in the bg it will come up with the error
The error stays there if you click ok it instantly re-appears and does not go away so you basically have to force quit PS
I have tried the apple+option+shift on program launch and it seems to fix it for a few min passibly enough time to open an image do a quick colour levels and save but any more than that it starts the error process again.
I have also tried reinstalling from disk with no luck
I cant thing of anything else to do has anyone else got any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Dan

    dano4127,
I was having the exact same issue. Running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a PowerPC. Started having the issue in CS3 just about the time I was going to upgrade to CS4. I installed CS4 , and it was working great. Then boom! Started getting the perpetual "Could not complete your request... blah blah blah" error.
Through quite a bit of my own digging (and let me tell you I am no geek by any stretch) from Apple and Adobe, I found a suggestion to delete my font cache files - since sometimes they get corrupted and cause all sorts of weird behavior. I did this using a free download called FontNuke (http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/). It collected and deleted all my font cache files.
    And so far so good!
When you are done, you may want to validate your fonts through FontBook (if you use it), and get rid of any that are corrupted as well.
    Hope this helps!

  • Could not complete your request because of a program error. Creative Cloud

Ug. Just got creative cloud. I cannot open any existing photoshop, jpg or even new files with out recieving the "Could not complete your request because of a program error." error message. HELP!!
    I am running OSX 10.6.8
    Thanks!

Please note the "Contact Adobe" link at the lower-right of every page here.  On the page you get to from that link is another link for Phone numbers.
However, if you're not asking them about the current version (CS5) then they will probably refuse to help you.
Let me reiterate what I understand from your posts above:  You're trying to run Photoshop CS on a Windows XP system with 3 GB of RAM installed in the computer, right?
How much RAM is available for Photoshop at the time you're trying to run it?  Task Manager can help tell you this.
How much RAM is shown as Available and what limit have you set in Edit - Preferences - Memory & Image Cache?
Common advice for problems that persist past reinstalls is to clear your Photoshop preferences.  To do this, press and hold Control-Shift-Alt when starting Photoshop.  If you're quick enough it will prompt you.

  • Effects not working? "Could not complete your request because of a program error?"

Hey guys&gals - I have always had this problem when working in RGB/CYMK modes - can anyone help me with that?
More more importantly, now I am getting in in Grayscale mode as of this morning.
I run Photoshop 6 V 13.1.2 x64 and just updated it this AM.
Effects are crucial for my job, so I need this fixed asap!!
I have tried the ctrl, alt, shift start up to no avail. Restarted, shutdown my PC as well.
    Please advise!
    Thanks,

Found the places I was supposed to - now what? Photoshop isn't crashing... doesn't give me any info other than a box saying "Could not complete your request because of a program error." And I have no choice but to click OK. This only happens when I try to use the layer effects in any color mode. Originally it was only in RGB/CMYK but now also happens in Grayscale.
I'm not technologically savvy - I know what programs I use, but that is all.

  • Cannot open files ~ Could not complete your request because of a program error

I can inly open 3 files and then I get this error message ~ Could not complete your request because of a program error
Please help, I am in the middle or a project ...
    Thank you,
    Linda

There is likely a font on that system that's corrupted or for some reason Photoshop just can't deal with.  Fonts are complex things, and it's well known that bad fonts can crash applications.
Ferreting out such a font is normally a matter of removing all but the default fonts, seeing that the problem is corrected, then adding the fonts back in systematically until the offender is isolated.  Yes, this can be tedious.
If it's not a font problem, there's a possibility it's a display driver problem.  To help diagnose that, go into Edit - Preferences - Performance, disable OpenGL Drawing, then restart Photoshop.  If the problem goes away, you'll want to check the web site of the maker of the video card for driver updates.  Don't forget to re-enable OpenGL Drawing again after updating the driver.
    Good luck.

  • CS3 "Could not complete your request because of a program error" message

I am running Photoshop CS3 and I just upgraded to leopard 10.5, the latest version of leopard. My processor is a dual 2.5 ghz powerpc G5 and I have 4.5 GB DDR SDRAM.
Upon opening the program (whether I'm opening a file or just opening the program) I'm getting a "Could not complete your request because of a program error," error message.
After clicking ok, I get infinite dialog boxes and have to force quit the program.
    Any known solutions for this?

Yes, I had that happen this morning as well. That message appeared after I opened a psd file, when it asked if I wanted to update text layers. I clicked ok, the file opened (it's layers appeared in the layers palette), and that that program error dialog popped up immediately after. I never could get it to go away, it just kept appearing in succession. Were you trying to open the file over a network?

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended Could not complete your request because of a program error.

When starting Photoshop CS6 I get this error message, Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended  Could not complete your request because of a program error (-- OK --).  This happens on the main screen immediately.  Once I click OK the program seems to be alright.  But some part of it, that I haven't discovered yet, may not function properly.
I am running Windows7 Professional Service Pack 1 64 bit with Intel i7-4770k CPU and 16 GIG Ram.
This problem just started recently, everything has been fine up till now.  I must have done something when trying to defragment the Registry or get rid of temp files.
I have uninstalled Photoshop CS6 and reinstalled it with no effect.  I have tried to run Photoshop CS6 32 bit in Safe Mode, but it will not run.  It hangs up on Reading Memory.
Is there any kind log file that would tell me what is causing this to occur?
Does anyone know what might cause this?
Thank you in advance for any helpful information.
    J. J. Patterson

Did you reset your Preferences and Photoshop tools.  Photoshop Preferences are not removed with an un-install and an Install does not install preferences.  Preferences are created  for a user id when a user ID start Photoshop  and there are no preferences for the user ID.

  • Photoshop CS4: Could not complete your request because of a program error.

    Hello,
I find myself in an interesting dilemma. I've had CS4 for a bunch of years now and have loved it. Unfortunately, my MacBook Pro's hard drive crashed a month or so back. Luckily, I have been using an external hard drive to back up my computer, so when it crashed, I lost very little in comparisson to some horror stories I've heard.
My Ps was able to retuned to my new hard drive with virtually no problems. However, the error "Could not complete your request because of a program error" shows up in rapid succession 5-10 times after I select the text tool. Interestingly enough, if I weather that storm, I'm able to use all the fonts, actions, etc. with no problems. Originally, it was simply a nuissance that I dealt with, but it's beginning to hamper my work, especially today when I was on deadline.
Doing some research and reading around the web and given the most culpable reason seems to be something wrong with a font, but I don't know which font I'm missing, need to update, whatever.
So here's my question: how do I get this thing to go away? Is there some file or something like that buried in a backup that I didn't bring over to the new hard drive that's causing the problem. At first, I was just happy to have the thing working after the crash, but it's getting pretty annoying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I don't know which fonts came from where, to be honest. It's kind of a mix of whatever I've done over the past 5+ years, if that makes sense.
I'm perfectly fine deleting all the fonts and reinstalling just the ones needed for PsCS4 if there's a file of that.

  • [Mac] Could not complete your request because of a program error.

Hello, I've got the problem with opening the file. It was saved in Photoshop CS 6, everything was ok, but after opening the file in few seconds here the message "Could not complete your request because of a program error." What should I do?? It was making all day long!
[Title Edited to reflect OS for clarity - Hunt]

    Olga Chu,
    Thank you for that information.
Yours is not a common error, though I have read of it before. In about 2 decades of using Ps (for most daily), I have never encountered it. However, there are some great folk here, who have seen about everything, and will probably have some solutions - though there might be a few additional questions. You have given them something to work with, so all is not lost yet.
There is likely something specific to your installation (maybe something as simple as a Permissions issue?), or to your system. Since I am a PC-only person, I will not muck about trying to guess what might translate from my PC's to your Mac. Since the Ps Forums were combined, we have a bunch of Mac experts, who are also experts in Ps. Give them a bit of time, to see your post. I am also going to Edit your title, to reflect the OS, and that should trigger those Mac-users to rush in to help.
Unless you have a deadline, give them a bit of time, to sort this issue out - I hate to have to redo my Images, if not totally necessary.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Type layer error: Could not complete your request because of a program error.

I am trying to rebuild text in a photo. I clicked the type tool, clicked on the background layer (knowing a new one should form) and got this error:
Could not complete your request because of a program error.
Then I made a new blank layer, clicked on it and got the same error.
I quit, relaunched started typing the new layer without a hitch. But when I selected to change the font (to any font), I got the same error
I switched to Firefox to search for the problem and went back to PSCS5. Now I can change the font! After switching applications and clicking on the type layer, I get the error again! Then it's fixed. Then it comes back.
Anyone have this problem or a solution?
    I'm using Mac OS 10.5.8 with PSCS5 12.0.1

Most likely you have a corrupt font which is causing problems for some of the type/font code.
Try validating your fonts with FontBook as a first step.

  • PS CS3: "could not complete your request because of a program error"

    Hi,
I am using Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP Pro (Upgraded from PS v7.0 a few months ago) on about 10% of my images I'm getting an the error:
"could not complete your request because of a program error"
when trying to save the file after doing changes to it. Oddly enough I do NOT get the error when doing "Save As" even after the recieving the error on a save. Nor do I get the error if I open one of the affected files in PS v7.
I believe from searching on line that the problem is "something to do" with the format of the metadata in the images. I am not sure exactly what, nor am I sure why it only affects about 10% of my images - all of which have been processed, captioned and keyworded the same way. However it is noticable that I cannot open "File info" dialog box in PS CS3 for any image that won't save. The error given is: "Could not complete the File Info command because of a problem with the File Info module"
Oddly, I CAN open the same File Info dialog box in Bridge CS3, I can change metadata via Bridge but then even after doing that the problems still exist when the image is opened in Photoshop.
At the moment, the ONLY work round I have is for each effected image, open it, do a "save as" - to save it under a different name delete the original image and then rename the image back to it's original name to ensure that my DAM can still locate the image.
I am a professional photographer with over 25,000 PSD files. As you can imagine it is impractical to manually open every image to see is affected. Can anyone think on any automated method to locate which images have the problem?
Does anyone have a fix to this problem? The workround above has one MAJOR drawback. Like most/all DAM users I locate and open my images from within my DAM (IMatch in my case). If I use the save-as/delete/rename method while the DAM is open I lose the data records associated with the image in the DAM. (The data is lost when the original image is deleted).
Any help would be appreciated. This is becoming a MAJOR problem for me.
    Thanks,
    Ian M Butterfield
    www.imb.biz

    Hi Rob,
I've uploaded one of the images to my server....
    http://www.iphotos.co.uk/downloads/tmp/FA0309A-E02305.zip (30Mb download).
I wouldn't say that the "image" is corrupt - the "image" is fine and in fact "Save As" to a new filename corrects the problem altogether. What I would say is that PS CS3 isn't handling the metadata in some of my images correctly. I use a lot of different programs to view/edit/update both image and metadata. PS CS3 is ONLY program I have found that has any problem with the files.
I only have two makes of camera Canon 5D and 10D. I can't say for certain whether it affects 10D files as the vast majoity of images I'm working on are from my 5D. What I can say however that not all images from a given shoot with the 5D will be affected - only a small proportion of them.
Anyhow, please download the zip file and extract the PSD to a suitable location. Then open the image in PS CS3 from that location. Make a minor edit to the image and you will see that PS CS3 can't save the file. Quit. Open the image again and select "File | File Info" and you will see the other error message. If you open the file and do "save as" to a new filename and repeat the above step everything works as it should.
If this was just a single file that I was having problems with I'd put up with the work round of "Save as" to correct the problem. But with 25,000+ PSD files and at a guess a random 10% of my files being affected you can imagine how frustraiting this is.
    Thanks,
    Ian.
