Just got FCPX, now on an iMac

I just bought Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3. I had bought FCP years ago and the continual upgrades
until it was named Final Cut Studio. I'm guessing this was 2005 or so. Anyhow, I used to have
all those other applications, Compressor, Motion, LiveType, Soundtrack, maybe others in that
package.
I never really mastered the program and resorted to iMovie HD in a pinch.
I'm already having some hardware issues with this new version, but it looks like something I'll
be able to learn.
Are those other programs "under the hood" of the new FCPX or bought seperately? Upgrades
from my old versions? Are they even necessary?
I have an interest in trying to create a DVD with surround sound.

Compressor and Motion are separate apps you need to buy separately. Color is gone, DVD Studio Pro is gone, Soundtrack Pro is gone.  They said they rolled some of the features into FCX...but the Color corrector isn't anything like Color, there is no DVD authoring like there was (I think you can PRINT TO DVD or something)...
But really, you should ask that in the FCX forum:  https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x

  • Just got a 20-inch Intel iMac

    Hi,
I just got a 20-inch Intel iMac and have couple of questions before I even open the box. I'm a PC to Mac changeover guy and I'm pretty new to to the Macintosh platform. I would appreciate your inputs to keep my system flying.
To begin with, I know that I have to upgrade my RAM to either 1.5GB or 2GB and also know Crucial is the way to go.
Apart from that, I have these questions:
    1. What do I first check for after opening the box? (Dead pixels for example and etc..etc..etc..) and how do I do that?
    2. Absolutely reqd tools and utilities to keep the system running at peak.
    3. Absolutely reqd apps.
    4. BootCamp (ofcourse) and is there a Mac OS X video conf. software that can use iSight and also can talk to PC users with any camera? Also, with BootCamp can I have multiple Windows partitions (for example having a partition for scratch disk when doing video editing)?
5.How do I make Apple DVD Player to read a DVD image (ISOs) that are lying on the hard drive? Can this also work when FrontRow is used? I have lot of personal DVDs that I bought and would like to view them from the hard drive instead of running it from the slot.
    6. How do I map the Mac Keyboard to work in Windows when running on XP? Is there a Windows software that runs as a service to make it happen?
Anything else I have to do?
    Rgds.

The Mac is safely nestled in a lot of styrofoam padding inside the box, so I doubt a ding on the outside can do much damage.

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

I just got a new iMac.  was following the onscreen instructions to do migration assistance and I guess it connected to my old iMac via wi fi. It never instructed me to connect via firewire.  Now it seems to have stopped.  what can I do that won't completely mess it up?  how Long will it take to do over wi fi?

Your new iMac does not have a Firewire port so you ned this adapter:

is this normal? normally, when i wake my phone, it picks up my wifi immediately. now it takes three to five seconds. what gives?

Mine does the same thing, started with the 2.2 software. When in my house and I go to do something it will be on EDGE and start to load, then ~5 seconds after it starts to load it switches to wifi and loads the rest.

  • I just got an ipad 2 and I felt in love with it. first time apple user. Thererofe, now I want to repalce all my PC product that I have. Could someone tell me if the IMac is touch screem such the ipad? thanks

I just got an iPad 2 and I felt in love with it. First time Apple user! Unfortunatelly, now I want to replace all my PCs products that I have. Could anyone tell me please if the I Mac desktop has touchscreem and works like the iPad 2?
    Thanks

The iMac does not include touch screen capability.
With an iMac, you can choose between a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad. If you want both, there is an additional cost.

  • I just got a new Imac, and downloaded files from my old PC. Now, when I go to Finder, I have 1500 files in an area called developer. What is this, and can they be deleted? There are also 78 files listed as Other!  Most of these files I do not recognize.

I just got a new IMac, and tried to download files from my old PC. When I go to,Finder, I have 1500 files under Developer, an 78 files under Other.
Most of these files I do not recognize. Can they be trashed? Why did they transfer? I used a flash drive for the transfer. Also, is there a way to transfer my older email files to this new computer?
Thanks for any and all help, I really need it.
    Tom

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...
    Good luck & happy computing!

NOT just one or the other? Please help!

    Hi,
The Mac version will use your Apple ID as the first and only choice...
... Until you add the same Apple ID to Messages on the iPhone.
Once this is done it is best to Restart the app on the Mac.
This will then get at least one, possibly two pop up saying the iPhone in using the Apple ID and the iPhone Number.
Accepting these Pop ups will enable the iPhone as an ID to be used in the Receive At List.
It will also appear in the drop down at the bottom for "Start New Conversations from"
If you did not set iyt up like this then remove the apple ID from the iPhone in the Settings > Messages.
Place the iPhone in Airplane mode to break with the server.
Take it out of Airplane Mode and re-add the Apple ID in the Messages settings.
Then Restart the app on the Mac as above.
Having done this you can still turn Off the Apple ID on the iPhone (receive as the iPhone number only) or disable the iPhone Number on the Mac (receive Apple ID stuff only)
The Start New Conversations option on the Mac version means you could use the iPhone number so people don't get your email.

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • HT1152 Hi, we have just got our new replacement desktop mac with mountain lion. We had a G5 that was irreparable. Now we are looking to see where we can put in our cd's as we just popped them into the side on the G5 but no joy here !

Hi, we have just got our new replacement desktop mac mountain lion osx 10.8.2,  as the G5 was irrepairable. Now we can't find where to put our discs ?!? Have they now done away with being able to burn discs and put software discs in now and just rely on downloads ?

Have they now done away with being able to burn discs and put software discs in now and just rely on downloads ?
Yes. There is no Superdrive. You cannot play DVDs or CDs.
You will need to buy an external DVD player/burner. Almost all will do the job, just make sure you can connect it, as your iMac does not have Firewire or USB2 (USB3 is backwards compatible).
Or there is of course the expensive one from Apple.

  • I just got a new imac, App store says I downloaded garageband update and it says it's installed.  But there's nothing new to it.  Is there something I'm suppose to do?  I restarted the imac, no difference

I just got a new imac, App store says I downloaded garageband update and it says it's installed.  But there's nothing new to it.  Is there something I'm suppose to do?  I restarted the imac, no difference

Weird, that's not the one I was initially downloading but I think that is the one that installed, so I think that solves that.  But now the problem is that the one I was updating is no longer being shown.  It's over 1gb that had all the loops and instruments.
Now when I try to use say strings lunar strings.  It tells me to download at app store.  It doesn't show.  I go back to garageband try again and says the instrument or loop is currently being installed.  But it's not.

  • I have iMovie '11, and I'm trying to import previously downloaded AVCHD files..we just got this iMac.

So I know how to directly import from the camera, but I've got all these .mts files I need to import from a hard drive. Each clip has two files it seems..the .mts and a .modd maybe? I gather from a google search this is a recurring problem, but I haven't found a real answer. Do I need to create an archive file for each? I am fairly tech savvy but by no means a computer genius nor super familiar with Macs. We've got iMovie '11 on an iMac, if that matters. Any help would be great! I had my first baby in August and now I've got all these videos and nowhere for them to go...sad.

Will the VoltaicHD convert into an iMovie usable format that takes up less space (so I should always use it?) or is it just useful in converting .mts files that I already have (...asked differently I guess, does Voltaic convert into that AIC format or something else more compact?)
It can convert into other formats, but it's really big strength is just being able to open and manipulate the AVCHD formats (as there are slight variations in the different HD formats, this can be a bit of a minefield). However while iMovie can import smaller size video in more compact formats, it's not going to be as compact as the AVC/HD files. It has to reassemble 'missing pieces' that AVC/HD estimates/guesses at playing back. iMovie needs all the frames in the video to exist as discreet real video frames. AVC/HD creates one key frame, then judges the differences between the key frame and a number of frames that follow it, estimates what's changed and then saves that into the file. This saves a ton of space but is a real hazardous way to try to edit that in a typical video editing program. That's why the video clips get big once they are imported into iMovie.
Then - how do I create archives as I import? I see how to import archives already made, but not how to create.
Make sure you have the camera attached to the Mac, but also make sure you have the camera running off of the power adapter that came with it. Don't Use Battery Power. Put the camera into VCR/Playback mode. Then launch iMovie. Also make sure iPhoto doesn't try to intercept your camera when it first detects it has been connected. Quit out of iPhoto if you see it launch, then launch iMovie just to be safe. Then go to the File Menu > Import from Camera. Then choose Camera Archive option then let it copy everything itself. Otherwise you can do this manually outside of iMovie by dragging the memory card icon when it appears on your desktop. Drag it into a folder on the Mac and that will essentially create a duplicate of the card, which is in a sense all the iMovie does when it creates a camera archive. Just make sure that you erase the card after you make the duplicate on the Mac. And that's where an external hard drive would be handy that way you won't fill up your internal Mac HD too quickly.

  • Just got imac back, two new dead pixels

I just got my iMac back from a repair (the hard drive crashed) and now there are 2 new dead pixels that weren't there before. I am totally bummed. I know they don't replace the display for a couple of bad pixels, but come on! They repaired one thing and broke another? I don't get it.

My brand new iMac shipped not with a dead pixel but with a spec of dust, underneath the glass... A spec of dust... (or maybe a defect in the glass itself). My iPhone only has tiny dust particles because it stays in my pocket. This was fresh out of the factory. If it was Steve W. building them in Steve J's mom's garage, it wouldn't seem careless. But since this came from a high quality factory, it seems careless. The tech-support guy laughed at me. I said "would it be that hard to lift off the glass, clean it, and put it back on?"
Apparently it's not in the "threshold". Apple's customer support has gone to s* since I first got a G3 iBook.
I'm being pretty picky, but when you have such a large, beautiful display, every defect stands out. At least I only notice it when it's against a solid color lighter than it (usually only white).

  • Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Most of the Apple store sales people and some of the genius bar people are only knowledgable on Apple's more recent offerings. They are not very knowledgable, I found, on older PowerPC based Apple computers, I'm afraid.
    Here's the real scoop.
Your girlfriend's G5 can only install up to OS X 10.5 Leopard. This is the last compatible OS X version for PowerPC users.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and OS X10.7 Lion are for newer Intel CPU Apple computers.
Early iMac G5's can only have up to 2 GBs of RAM.
Later iMac G5's (2005-2006) could take up to 2.5 GBs of RAM
2 GBs of RAM will run OS X 10.5 Leopard just fine.
The very latest iTunes (10.5.2) can be installed and runs on both PowerPC and Intel CPU Macs.
However, there are certain new iTunes feature that won't work without an Intel Mac.
One of iOS and iTunes feature is sync'g wirelessly over WiFi.
This will not work unless you have an iDevice running iOS 5 and Intel Mac running 10.6 Snow Leopard or better.
Although, I was disappointed I would not be able to do this with my G4 Mac, it's not a biggie problem for me.
So, your girlfriend's computer should be fine for what she intends to use it for.
The Apple people either just plain didn't know or we're trying to get you to think about buying a new Mac.
At least, as of now, not truly necessary.
If Apple, at some later point, drops support for PowerPC users running 10.5, then would be the time to consider a new or "newer" Intel CPU Mac.
My planned Mac computer upgrade is seeking out a " newer" last version G5 for my "new" Mac.
I can't afford, right now, to replace all of my core PowerPC software with Intel versions, so I need to stick with the older PowerPC Macs for the time being. The last of the G5's is what I seek.
