Just got hit with the New York Times Virus!

Hey guys,
While visiting the New York Times website I got a pop up saying I need to click to get antivirus for my computer, of course I said no but am I infected and should I reformat my drive. I won't post any links, just Google it yourself and you can see this is all over the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Of if anyone had encountered this.

It's actually a 'rogue virus' that wants you to click OK to buy a solution for a nonexistent problem on your machine. Same thing happened to me on Saturday, and a few million N.Y. Times internet readers. So I called the Apple helpline and was told to reset Safari, being sure to click "clear history, empty the cache, and remove all cookies". And that was that. (To reset, click "Safari" on the top bar, click "reset", and click the three options I mentioned. No need to reformat anything or spend more than a couple of minutes on this phony 'warning'.

  • With the latest FF update I can't load the New York Times

I updated FF and Flash Player today and now I can't load the New York Times - all I get is a page with links. Other sites are loading OK. I've tried changing the security.mixed_content.block_active_content to false and that didn't help.
I've got FF 36:0 and I use Windows. Does anybody know whether this is a FF problem and if there's a solution?
I don't think it's my plug-ins because other sites load easily but these are the ones I've got:

  • Since the most recent Firefox updates, I am having trouble with certain features on The New York Times website; I can no longer see certain weblog comments, or post comments, etc.

This question is admittedly a little complicated. The New York Times website has a number of weblog pages which include brief stories followed by space for readers to leave comments. You probably need to be a Times On-Line subscriber to really see what I'm talking about, but some examples would be this City Room blog: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/bloomberg-cancels-radio-talk-amid-furor-over-aides-resignation/ or this Arts Beat blog: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/01/theater-talkback-remembering-jerry-leiber-a-reluctant-pioneer-of-the-jukebox-musical/
Since the most recent Firefox updates, when I view these pages, which traditionally have a number of reader comments at the bottom of the Times' story (or at least a space to leave a comment), I can no longer see the comments. There's simply empty. blank space. I know that the comments are there; if I open Internet Explorer and log on to the same page, the comments are suddenly visible. I don't understand where this problem has come from. I haven't noticed whether I'm missing seeing anything on other websites yet.
I also cannot post comments on other parts of the Times website; while the pages dedicated to story-specific reader comment seem to load correctly and the space to type my comment does appear, I can't actually submit the comment. Repeated pressing of the "submit" icon has no effect. Once again, this works normally in IE.
For the record, in the past week, I have changed my computer's anti-virus software from McAfee to Norton 360. I run Windows XP. If there's any another information I can provide, please advise, as I vastly prefer running Firefox to IE.

  • I can using AirPrint from safari and email to my hp printer but do not get print as an option from the pulldown menu from the new york times and other apps. How can I print directly from these apps?

I can't seem to print directly from apps like the new York times. Print is not an option from the pulldown menu. Print to my hp printer works  fine from safari and email though and from some other apps. Do some apps not permit printing? That doesn't right.

Thats funny. If go to ny times on safari therebis a print icon and no problem printing. On the app -- and I am a paid subscriber -- no print option ...
You can ask the NY Times why not.
Standard behavior is that Airprint always works with iBooks, Mail, Photos, and Safari.  Apps are up to their author.

  • I have OS X 10.4.11 and I just got home with my new ipod nano and I need to update my OS! How do I do this?

I have OS X 10.4.11 and I just got home with my new ipod nano 6th generation and I have after searching threads etc discovered I need to update my OS! How do I do this - all of the posts on this subject are a bit out of date I think? I have a mac book pro 2.2 so I know I can run Leopard, I just have no idea how to get it...? Please help!

Check your Mac against hardware specs to find out what version of OS X you can upgrade to.
Then buy DVD for that version.

There are several other similar posts in this forum with the answers. Your post appears third in my Google search today looking for a solution so I thought I'd add the solution here as well.
It is obviously a bug in either (or both) Firefox and the NYT.
The quickest solution is to simply go to the VIEW Menu in Firefox, then the ZOOM option and choose RESET.
I use Mac and this happens in Firefox 3.6.10. It does not happen in other browsers like Safari, Chrome and Camino, and it did not occur before last week.
It has also occurred in the iOS version of Safari on iPad. Not sure how to fix it there.

  • Check out the New York Times Reader - Powered by AIR & TLF

Be sure to check out today's release of the AIR-based New York Times Reader:
    http://www.nytimes.com/timesreader
The NYT Reader was built using Adobe AIR and the Text Layout Framework. It is one of the most innovative uses of TLF we have seen and we're proud to have it as the largest showcase of TLF and text in Flash Player 10 to date! It is an excellent demonstration of TLF's reflowing text, multiple columns/containers, and top notch typography features.

I  wonder if another provider would really be much different?  Read some of the other carrier forums - seems to be the same story everywhere.
I'm not disagreeing with you - I've found that I am usually more informed about Verizon policies and procedures than some of the reps in our local store.

  • Anyone Know How To Get The New York Time-Lapse?

I saw it playing on a Black MacBook in the store window. I asked someone there and they said it was a streaming video on a loop. There was a White MacBook next to it playing more of a Wilderness kind off thing. Anyone know where I can get the New York One? I really like it.

  • I' ve just got an ipad (the new ipad) as a gift. It's a new one but Unfortunately, i found out that it doesn't have the App Store install. How to install the app? Please advice.

I just got an ipad (retina display) as a gift. But unfortunately it doesn't have the App Store application installed. How to imstall it. Then i asked the IT to help me to find the solutions. They asked me to RESET the ipad. I tried to reset the ipad but it request 4 letters of password which i'm puzzled coz i don't even create any password yet in this ipad. So how to get the password? Can some one help me to solve this problems. Thanks.

Your best bet is to contact Apple.  Those conditions should not occur with a new unit.
I do suggest that you read Chapters 1, 2, and 3.
If you wish to troubleshoot on your own...
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Just got home with my new MACBOOK!!!

I am very excited to get my first Mac! (ds has a g4)
I said several prayers over my Macbook box that I did not just purchase a lemon. It is a week 36 so I hope it is o.k.
I am glad I waited until the new iPods came out too. I am eligible for the educator discount, which the new ipods are not eligible for the rebates, so had to get the old one...but the price went down to $249. So with the discount on top of that, after rebate the old 30g is only $40!! Also, this store didn't even have the new iPods, but they did have the new Nanos. They are pretty!
    Also bought .mac and applecare.
Can't wait to get started with it!!

Im growing weary of rumor sites, mostly because they also post some strange and completely nonsensical claims on occasion, such as word of the rebirth of the 12" pro notebook, which is preposterous. HOW they were able to even determine that this particular range of week builds were most susceptible to defects such as shutting down at random/bursting into flames/ cursing at your children, is beyond me. they might as well say that satan possesses that particular week of macbook, and that we should all just pour holy water on the keyboard to drive out the beast. or perhaps they should say that behavioral scientists are remotely controlling our laptops from space, triggering these sudden "random" shutdowns, and we, the guinea pigs, fall for this subterfuge. and as we scramble in frustration over our beloved computers suddenly going narcoleptic, men in white coats bearing apple and IBM insignias (GASP!) jot things down in clipboards and study our reactions. the purpose of this insidious plot has yet to be determined. but know this, its not over!

Your new iMac does not have a Firewire port so you ned this adapter:

  • My 5 year old Airport Expresses don't work with the new Airport Time Capsule?

My question is after wasting hours trying to install my new Airport Time Capsule, Ive noticed that the "Airport Utility" doesn't recognize any of my 4 five year old Airport Expresses. An error message says " This version of Airport Utility doens not support this (these) base stations"? Does that mean that their is no work arounds which means I have to purchase 4 replacements?

You need the older airport utility.. that can be installed on Lion or Mountain Lion.. it cannot be installed on Mavericks.. do you have an older computer even a windows one.. or can access, borrow or bribe a friend over for drinks with laptop.. then you can configure your expresses.. !!
There is a rather complex workaround on Mavericks.. when I posted it in the past.. Apple deleted it.. go figure.
    Kappy's post is still there.

  • Just got home with my new laptop from BB!!

And of course, I have a problem.  When I powered up for the first time, the computer immediately recognized my home wireless connection and asked for password, which I provided.  The laptop says the connection is EXCELLENT, and all green.  But when I opened the IE browser, the pages won't load. I directly connected my ethernet cable from my modem to the laptop, and the pages load VERY quickly, but as soon as I disconnect the direct ethernet, and go to wireless, I can't get ANY pages to load.. I get the "circle of death" and then nothing happens.. Over 5 minutes later, the screen goes dark, but still, the pages are not loading..   what can I do??  Anyone have ANY suggestions for me??

Something else to notice, on the meter on the bottom that shows the signal strength are you getting a yellow !.  Hover over it and see if it "Internet Access" or "No Internet Access".  If you see "No Internet Access" then the problem is a configuration on your router because it's obviously connected to it.
This could be a slew of things like restricted MAC addresses, max # of network IP's assigned, all the way to ports not being open (not likely, but possible).  From the sounds of it though check if restricted MAC addresses are on or any other settings under "Wireless Setup" or "Wireless Security" that could be causing the issue.

  • I am using 3.6 on a 2009 Powerbook running OS 10.5.8, and the New York Times home page never loads properly.

In earlier versions of Firefox, the Global edition loaded fine but the U.S. edition was a blank page with the normal left-hand text sidebar where it should be. Now the Global edition fails, as well.
To view the main flow of text, I have to scroll down 1.5 pages worth - and then the text looks normal.
Then, below the "Video" and "News from Reuters and AP" sections, there is another 1.5 full-page scrolls worth of blank page again. Then the "Inside NYTimes.com" section (with graphics properly placed) section comes up, followed by a 6" deep blank section.
My husband is a programmer, and can't figure it out.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
*Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize"
*Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
