Just got my 17" MBP!!!!!!!!!

I am a first time Mac User and this is the most amazing, stunning, exceptional, beautiful, incredible, and whatever adjective you can think of machine I've ever seen. The screen is AWESOME!!!! I'm typing on it right now! No uneven backlighting, bleeding, or color banding that other people have complained about. I LOVE IT! Now, on to my question. Is there anyway to get rid of the dashboard widgets at the bottom of the screen or are they stuck there?
P.S. I have the glossy screen, and its great! Yippee! I love Mac!

it's always interesting to see the response apple machines get when they first come out of the box. if apple does do one thing well, it's the out of the box experience.
ok, the things at the bottom of the screen aren't dashboard widgets. that's the dock, it's basically the shortcut to launching apps and so on. you'll figure it out. anyway, you can get it to auto-hide, you can resize it, put it elsewhere, get it to auto-magnify as you move the pointer across it. you'll find all of this in system prefs when you click on 'dock'.
enjoy your new machine. btw weren't you the guy that was getting one for christmas and wasn't allowed to open it till then?

  • Just got a new MBP and I want to sell my old one.

The email I got from Apple says they will give me $500 for my 3 year old MBP.  I have a lock set but I do not remember how I did this or how to remove it, but when I want to make a change with the time, for example, I have to insert a mastercode.  it is the same code when that brown/beige lock comes up. It only shows up at different times when I am trying to make a change. The company that will take my computer neds all locks removed.  It does not show up when I want to make changes to System pref.  Does anybody know how I turn that off because the company who will buy the old MBP needs this master pasword/lock turned off.
any suggestions on how to turn off the lock or set it so it does not show up anymore?  I think I found it under System Pref.---Security---Uncheck "Require a password..."  The locks are still there but so far the ones I have gone back to look at are unlocked.

This is just the standard user password for your account. If you've forgot it, there are various ways to reset it, depending on which version of OS X you're running.
If you want to sell your old machine, take a look at Thomas Reed's How to prepare your Mac for sale.
If you need help on resetting your password, post back with your OS X version.

  • Just got a new MBP w/ Retina Display and the webcam quality is horrid, help?

As the title says, I just bought my new macbook pro 15inch with retina display. Started to skype with a friend and noticed the quality of the webcam is HORRIBLE, even on photobooth. My 2010 MBP has way better quality than this, is this just a problem with the retina display ones or do all MBP now come with crappy quality webcams?

If it is not to your liking you have 14 days from date of purchase to return it for a full refund.

  • Just Got New MBP and need to reinstall Software

I just got a 15inch MBP and installed Final Cut Studio 2 which I did not know was 55 gigs. I want to install it on an external HD so I want to reinstall Leopard with my disc I received when I bought my MBP from Apple. Will I still get all of my extras such as ilife with my install disc and will it restore it to factory (as I received it when I first bought it?) Thank you!

An 'erase and install' will remove EVERYTHING from your harddrive, and if you've already got Leopard installed, that's your only option.
Reintalling Leopard will NOT install iLife; to my knowledge there are no Leopard+iLife 08 install DVDs. . . just Leopard DVDS. I may be wrong, as I have an old Mac and not a new one, which may come with a software package I've never seen (but I'm getting my GF a new MBP for Christmas!!). I think you need to (and should have) a seperate iLife 08 disk with which you can reinstall iLife.
A couple of questions and some advice:
-I assume you have at least a 120gb harddrive. Why do you want to install FCP2 onto an extrnal DVD? If you plan to use that space to store media, it would be a better idea to store the media (i.e. the video footage, etc) on an external drive and keep your FCP application on your internal HD.
-Also, if you are going to run FCP on an external HD, get a FIREWIRE 800 external HD. They are quite a bit more expensive, but I had a LOT of problems just using FCP1 to edit footage stored on an external USB HD . .. I can't IMAGINE the problems you would have running FCP2 off of a USB external HD.
-Thinking about it again, where are you going to store your footage? On the same external HD as FCP? I think that will work . . .
    Looking forward to hearing more!

HI, I just got a Macbook Pro.  It's great but my mail doesn't work at all.  It will come up correctly, but take forever to download messages,  then won't delete them,  then won't save them to folders.  Then when I go to quit mail it's like it gets stuck between quitting and not.  I have to force quit, then restart my computer if I want to pull up my mail again.  How can I fix this?

If you just got your new MBP you have phone support from Apple (which is quite good) call them.  800-692-7753 tell the automated answerer "mail technical support" you'll have human quite quickly.  Hope this helps.

  • Got a new MBP and old external hard drive is too full for backup

I just got a new MBP and got all my data migrated and everything. I plugged my external hard drive in to run a backup, and it apparently is too full to run a backup of the new computer.  Even though all the files are the same (mostly), I guess it's not going to overwrite anything because it's a new computer.  Should I just get a new backup drive and start fresh for this computer.  Should I reformat my old backup drive (and if so, how?)?  Advice?

You should always have two backups of all vital data in any regard. A good 1TB Toshiba USB is $65
If there is NOTHING on the external HD you cant lose, format in disk utility > erase > format MAC OSX extended journaled.
then apply a Time Machine backup to the old HD of your new computer. That will free of a great deal of space.
However you should still have a 2nd backup of data.  2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.

  • I just got a MBP Retina. At it's highest resolution, everything is tiny. The olny way to get things to a readable size is to lower the rez, but that defeats the purpose of having it. Am I missing something?

It doesn't defeat the purpose to lower the resolution. When you choose the size you can read, the extra pixels are used to make the text and graphics more detailed, closer to the high print resolution humans have been accustomed to reading on paper for hundreds of years. That is the difference compared to the coarse screen resolution of a conventional (non-Retina) screen.

  • Just Got My MBP In The Mail!!! Should I Wait?

I just got my FedEx delivery of my new MBP!!! Should I wait until it gets to room temp before I fire it up? It feels really cold since here in Michigan it was 10 degrees overnight and feels like it sat on the truck all night.

Yes, it would be a good idea to let it warm to room temperature. Normal operating range is 15 to 50ºC.

  • MBP shuts off, i've just got it last week!!!!! pleaaaase help me!

when something touches the firewire port on my mac, it shuts down!!!
    why?!
is something wrong with my mac!!??
    i've just gotit last week!!!

Short circuiting is normal behavior for any powered port into which something inappropriate and conductive is inserted. It happens because because people don't look at what they're doing, not because anything is wrong with the MBP's ports. If you look carefully at the interior of a MacBook Pro and how its many parts are arranged, it will immediately be clear that very little of the case's perimeter is available for ports. Nearly all of its perimeter is occupied by the optical drive, hard drive, battery, and the large air vents hidden behind the hinge cover (which itself contains the airport card and antenna because they can't be enclosed in metal without drastically reducing wireless signal strength). The only way to move the ports farther apart would be to reduce their number or increase the size of the case — neither of which is viewed as an acceptable option by Apple, apparently.

  • MBP 13in Just Got It-Quick Question

I am having a stupid moment. Just got the 13 in and I have the 15 in MBP. I somehow got the App folder on the Dock which is where I want it. I have tried to put the App folder on the dock on the 13 in but it just isn't happening. I have tried to drag to the dock it from the side bar and any other place I have found it. Just won't go on the dock. What am I doinf wrong?

Dragging it to the wrong part of the Dock, perhaps?
It needs to go to the right of the divider if the Dock is at the bottom of your screen, and below the divider if the Dock is at either side of the screen. You can't put it in the area where your individual app icons are.

  • Just got my MBP from Fedex!

I just got my Mbp from Fedex dubbed 'Dualie'. I am happy to report I do not have the whine! I am currently calibrating the battery and I will report if I have any issues within the next few hrs to days.

I found this site with the recorded whining sound. I had found a better site but can't find it now. I'm expecting my MBP Wednesday. This is going to be my first Mac and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be posting here as soon as I receive my in.

  • Just got a mid 2012 mbp 13inch and the delete key is slanted towards me is this normal ??

my mbp pro delete key is slanted towards me is it normal or is it a design defect its a couple of weeks old not really happy about it after all the money spent if it is a defect will apple replace the key or if not the whole computer ???

So, if I see it when running diskutil, why it is not seen when in recovery view? or in other words, why does it exist when it cannot be used?. I infact turned off wireless and still it doesn't show the internal recovery partition.
Thanks to Paul_31 for pointing that MacKeeper is a scam. The funny thing is it even shows up as a popup ad when running on Windows 8 and browsing some site. .
Btw, since I just got delivery of a brand new iMac, as a newbie what are the things I should look out for to ensure everything wrt to hardware and software are working. I have heard people say run the PixelBuddy to determine if there are any dead pixels to begin with.
Btw, do I need the free Sophos AV software?. I think it also removes malware. Do you guys recommend any best and essential utilities (free and paid) that are useful?
This machine will predominantly be used for doing HD video editing, programming including BootCamp running Windows 8 with Visual Studio 2012.
    Please advise.

  • Just got a 4s.  Need Lion on my MBP for Cloud.  Is Lion OK?  Love Leopard don't want to change for the worse . . .

I just got my first iPhone - a 4s, it's awesome.  I want to use the cloud on my MBP.  Is the upgrade to Lion worth it?  Leopard seems to work great - don't want to change if Lion has bugs like I've heard.  Any opinions on Lion vs. Leopard appreciated.  Thanks

I noted that, but if SL allows him to load Lion, then SL can stay as well as the ownloaded Lion after an upgrade.
But that assumes he is willing to run SL instead of his favored Leopard, which I may be completely wrong about.
My take is that unless there is an application that is (a) needed (b) incompatible with Lion and (c) unable to be updated there is no need to complicate matters with dual boots, just my take.

  • Just got my MBP 17" !!  General Q's

I am a total green-horn with Mac computers. I just got my computer tonight, via UPS. I was glad my custom MBP 17 was assembled in China rather than Japan right now, too. I opted for 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, Anti-Glare, 7400rpm 500GB.
I haven't used it too much yet, just general navigating. I clicked on command +esc and suddenly movie trailers popped up and so I watched a couple! I love the screen, no choppiness on the streaming, sharp image! Stellar! Then I tried it out my new (arrived 2 days ago) Boog Taipan Slim L bag and man it is slick! Looks like I have a 13 inch MB in there! Highly recommend the Boog bag!
Anyway would anyone by kind as to supply a link where I can learn setting up preferences, finding sys files and folders... I want to cross-reference what I know about my old XP system. I want to know my way around ASAP if possible.
FOR EXAMPLE: I downloaded firefox 4.0 and it installed fast and fine. However, after following the instructions, clicking on the installer and dragging it into App folder I STILL saw FIRE FOX icon on my desktop and I can't delete it. I didn't know if I did something wrong so I downloaded it again and reinstalled. Now I had TWO firefox icons on the desktop with a (1) to denote the second.
I am of the habit to check MY DOWNLOADS in windows and save and or delete files as I go.
However, so far I don't know how to do this type of stuff on my new MBP's OSX.
I clicked on the DOWNLOADS area by the TRASH Bin.... but I couldn't delete it there. I WAS able to delete the second installer labeled with a (1) after it. If I click both firefox files on the downloads area, it brings up the (1) installer again. Also, I can't seem to delete the FIRST firefox installer at all, the TRASH turns into an EJECT symbol???? Weird.
When I click on the firefox installer on the desktop, it pulls up its window and off to the right, there is a file dir... at the top, the dir reads, MacIntosh HD, then FireFox ... it appears OSX is reading the firefox installer like a sys folder??? Should I uninstall firefox and reinstall a new preferred way? Or is this normal when downloading programs????

    1) Firefox 4 ***** (Windows Vista anyone?). Firefox destroyed Firefox with Firefox 4
    2) Safari > Chrome > Firefox 3.6 > all
    3) The only reason why it's made in China is because of cheap labor and sweatshops. A ton of high-tech stuff inside your iPod, iPhone, Mac, you name it are made in Japan.
    4) People need to stop freaking out and stop worry about "what if" and actually have some sort of feeling or compassion for the ones who are actually affected and are living there, people who lost their lives and people who risk their life right now as we speak.
    5) Grats on your new Mac.
