Just got my time capsule, how do i set it up?

Thank you!

You need to do the following to use a TC as your internet router:
1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the TC's WAN port to the Ethernet port on your cable/DSL modem.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the TC's LAN ports to the Ethernet port on your computer.
3. Turn off the computer.
3. Disconnect power from the TC and your cable/DSL modem.
4. Wait not less than one minute.
5. Power up the modem and wait until the status lights indicate communication with your ISP.
6. Power up the TC. Wait until the light turns green.
7. Power up the computer.
The TC's default settings should work as is. On your computer open Network preferences. Select the Ethernet port then click on the Advanced button. Click on the TCP/IP tab. Set the IPv4 Config dropdown menu to DHCP and click on the Apply button.

  • I just got a Time Capsule, and when I try to use it to extend my Airport n type network, it seems to take it over instead.

Could I be doing something wrong to cause this? The Time Capsule is hanging off the network on an ethernet cable and can be accessed by all the Macs over wireless, but I would like to use it to strengthen the signal at that end of the house.  When try to set it up the extend the network, It seems to take it over and knock off the Airport Extreme and Airport Express currently on it.  When I initially set it up, I selected "Extend network" but it changed it on its own to create network.  I later changed it back to extend, but it then took over and I had to turn off its wireless to get the Epress and Extreme back onto the network.  I had just updated the Airport Utility to the latest version on my Macbook Pro and Mini, but I have an iMac still on Snow Leopard that I believe is still running an older version.

Actually I am not sure how much it is able to export of the old settings but worth a go.
The file is xml format .. so it could be possible to extract info anyway.

You can always load 5.6 utility onto any version of the OS from Lion following.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • I just got a time capsule 2TB and was told at the apple store I could partition it into two separate 1TB drives (one for backups and the other as an external HD for my iTunes library....everytime i try it says permission denied

I want to put my itunes library on my time capsule as external storage to free up space on my computer. How do i partition or create a disk image or do whatever it is i need to do so that my itunes library runs directly off my time capsule and is separate from the time machine backup?

Not sure what the guys were smoking in the Apple store but you have never been able to partition a TC.
See Pondini for doing disk images.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Note very carefully.. if you move your itunes library to the TC.. apple have specific instructions for moving libraries.. you must follow it precisely...
The TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive.
Any corruption of the drive will cause you to lose your itunes library.. please do not ignore this. I have fixed a fair number of TC for people who lost their 200GB plus itunes library.. you should see the sweat pour off their faces.

  • Just got a time capsule with my airport base station.

I am trying to use it as a backup but keep getting an error message, i have other backups using time machine on my imac, but on different hard disks that are all dis-mounted. I want to use the Time-capsule as my main backup for our different mac's. not sure what to do?

Is the TC available as a TM target?
You sometimes need to reset the TM to allow a new network destination to be chosen.. but it will usually work with multiple destinations .. you just need to select where you want the backup.
Is the TC plugged into the airport extreme by ethernet? If not, I would certainly do that.
Reset it and run the airport utility 5.6 from Lion to do the setup.. v6 in lion does make a mess of this often enough we recommend don't use it.
Apple made a version of the utility from previous versions available to Lion since v6 was featureless.

Ignore what it says .. just load it into the computer and use that instead.

  • Just got U-verse today, how do I set up speed dialing on my phone, I had it with the ATT service, but it does not work with the UVerse

OK - I looked at the manual & see they made it major project. Instead of simply assigning tel numbers to each of the dialing digits, you have to build a directory record first, then you can assign the directory record to a dialing digit.
Looks like the simple part is using it  - just press and hold the digit to dial the whole number.
So, it will take 40 minutes or so to break down the steps in understandable prose. It is too late to start now & i have a vet appointment in the am. All day is kind of full. But, I will try to do it tomorrow (thurs the 18th)

Seemed like there should be a speed dial, so I did  a search & found the cure is worse than the disease -
    Dial from your phone
Make calls directly from your existing touch-tone home phone:
Local calls: Dial the 7- or 10-digit phone number.
Long distance calls: Dial 1 + area code + 7-digit phone number.
International calls: Dial 011 + country code + 7-digit phone number.
Dial online from your myAT&T account
Call from your online Address Book or Call History, which shows a list of up to 100 of your most recent call records sorted by date and time:
Log in to myAT&T. Don't have a myAT&T login? Register today!
From the I want to menu, select Manage my plans and services and then Manage my phone features.
Your U-verse portal will open and a Make a Call box will appear on the left side of the page.
Enter a number to dial or select a number from your Call History or Address Book.
Specify whether you'd like to activate/deactivate Caller ID Blocking and Call Waiting for the call.
    Select Place Call.
When your home phone rings, pick it up to place your call.
    Important Note
To find numbers in the Call History, you can also sort numbers by missed, answered, outgoing, name, length of call, or type, or search for a specific call.
    Dial from your U-verse TV
With U-verse TV, you can view a list of up to 100 of your most recent incoming call records by date and time on your TV screen. Use your U-verse TV remote to tune to your Call History and return calls with the press of a button.
Tune to Channel 9900 using your U-verse TV remote.
Select a U-verse Voice phone number on screen.
Press OK to view a log of answered and missed calls. You can sort by name, date, and phone number.
    Scroll using the arrows.
Select a number and press OK to return a call.
    Select Call and press OK.
When your home phone rings, pick it up to place your call.
You can have a call list accesed from a browser.
You can call back a historical call from the browser or TV.

  • I have a time capsule how do i set it up to work with an AOL router

I have a 2TB time capule and it worked fine for a while. Then it lost conection to the aol router we use.  Can you give me instruction on how to set it up again. or give me some idea of the problem.

There are three different levels of reset.
If a basic restart doesn't work, start over with factory reset.

To set up iCloud, see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • Now that I have backed up, can I delete items from my desktop? One of the reasons I got the time capsule was so that I could free up some space on my computer. I am confused about whether the backup will one day remove my photos/video

I purchased a 2TB time capsule yesterday. I set it up as a router and did the backup no problem. I then navigated the backup folder and found that all my photos/video that I am nervous about losing are on there. So far so good.
Taking a step back, the reason I bought the time capsule was 1.) I needed a router 2.) I have a mac and 3.) I am running out of disk space on that mac (I shoot and cut a lot of video and have years of high quality pictures on my mac hard drive)
Can I now delete them from my mac computer to free space? I have used standard external disk drives in the past, but the whole "Back Up" piece of things has me confused. I love the idea of backing up my computer so I want to keep that functionality, but will the drive still function as a static external hard drive? Or do I need to move that material in seperately as a folder outside of the backup folder?
I am nervous that if the backup overwrites information as the disk space becomes limited that in 10 years when I fill this drive up, that I will lose all of my photos that are part of the backups that I am running now.....
Or worse, I am nervous that if I remove things from my mac right now, that the next time that a back up is performed that it will lose this data as it is not currently on the device I am backing up? How does this work?
I apologize, the back up is a very new concept to me and I want to make sure I do not goof anything up.

    applefool wrote:

That's an entirely different thing from backups.  A backup is an extra copy, in case the original is lost or damaged.   Additional space is just that -- more space for originals.
While it's possible to use the same disk (such as the TC's internal HD) for both things, it's dangerous -- when (not if) something happens to the TC, you risk losing the originals that are on it.   To be safe, you need (at least) two copies of everything important, in (at least) two different places.
Many (including me) recommend at least three copies (originals plus 2 backups).  While it's not common for the Mac's hard drive to fail about the same time as the backup drive, it does happen.  There are several threads here where it did, and very expensive data recovery was needed, but in some cases everything was lost.
So as the others recommend, getting an external HD for the stuff there isn't room for on your Mac is one solution for not having enough space.  But you might explore getting a larger internal HD.   If possible, that might be bettter.
Then, also get another external, for "secondary" backups, so you're doubly protected.  If you get a portable model, you can take it offsite for even better protection.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details and some suggestions.
Can I now delete them from my mac computer to free space? I have used standard external disk drives in the past, but the whole "Back Up" piece of things has me confused.
You're not the first or only one.
There are different types of backup apps, so there are different answers for the different types.
As the others have posted, Time Machine will, sooner or later, delete it's backup copies of things that are no longer on your system.  Depending on how long the original was there and when backups were run, that can be in as little as 24 hours, or as long as there's room.   So no, don't take the chance with data that's important!
Is there helpful information on how to add an external drive to your backup set up?
See the green box in #2 of the FAQ article.  All you have to do is format it for a Mac and remove it from the exclusion list.
Once I set it up, will I need to leave the hard drive plugged into my mac in order for the data to be backed up?
It can only be backed-up while it's connected.
If I do, and a back up is performed without the hard drive attached to my computer, will it remove the backup of  what was on the hard drive
No (unless you leave it disconnected until Time Machine starts deleting old backups).
It will back up the external when it's connected, and not complain if it isn't.

  • My M-Air start up disk if full; I have the a new time capsule, how do I transfer and use the TC as my main storage drive?

The start-up disk on my MAC AIR is full - I just added a new Time Capsule - how do you transfer your files from the AIR to the TC and set it up to be used as my primary storage disk - not my Mac Air

Get a second external drive, drag both the iTunes library and the pictures to it, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that instance of the library. This also works with iPhoto, but see below.
A drive or partition needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended in order to hold an iPhoto library or for Time Machine to back it up.

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

If you only copy your Files you will lose your favorites. The best Way to copy your Library to the New Computer is to Export your libery (you can find the Export in the menue). This will copy your Wohle Library on cd. If you Out in These cd's in your new Computer iTunes will copy it with all informations.
While that may work, it is extremely time consuming and unnecessary.
Copying the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer will keep the library intact.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can I simply just use my Time Capsule as a normal External Hard drive? A wireless external hard drive?

Can I simply just use my Time Capsule as a normal External Hard drive? A wireless external hard drive?

I am not sure what you mean by normal external but yes, it is a network hard disk drive.. and you can use wireless.. the only trouble then is, if there is no ethernet connection and internet is by wireless to a different router, then you cannot do both at once.
