Just got new ipod to replace old one. Can I transfer songs?

I just replaced my broken ipod mini with a new one. I want to transfer my old songs if I can, but I don't know how. When I plug my ipod into my PC it continually says DO NOT DISCONNECT. Also, it told me to restore my ipod, but that it would erase everything I had on there. Itunes still has my old songs, but I can't figure out if or how to transfer them. I click restore but I am still not able to get my songs or buy new ones. Do I need to go through the whole process like I did when I got my first ipod? And is there a way to transfer all my old songs onto my new ipod?

If you have all your songs on iTunes, then you need to setup the new iPod and then sync it to iTunes.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
iPods come pre-formatted for Mac, so you will need to format it for Windows.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software
You also need to install the Updater software by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
After rebooting, run the Updater.
Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version
b and
format your iPod's hard drive.
Disconnect the iPod from the PC when permitted. Reconnect it and iTunes should open and register the iPod. Then sync it as normal.

Has it been disabled via Settings -> General -> Restrictions?

  • Got new iphone to replace broken one-cannot access apps and songs

i tried to syn new phone to replace old phone, but my apps are not syncing/running and my songs are not playing

Make sure you phone is signed into the same Apple ID in Settings>Store>Apple ID that the iTunes store is signed into in iTunes on your computer.  If it isn't, tap the ID shown, sign out, then sign back in with the correct ID.

  • Just got new ipod after old one got stolen. NEW ONE WONT WORK!!!!

So my old ipod got stolen. Yesterday I bought a new nano. I get home, and it turns out my computer cant even find the new ipod. I am using the new one with the same itunes account as the old one. What do I have to do to get the new nano hooked up??

What model was the old iPod?
Have you installed the latest version of iTunes as the Nano needs the latest version.
Are you using a USB 2 port?

  • I just purchased new shuffle thinking my old one was done (battery, etc...it was old).  plugging in the new shuffle yielded the same loop message "ITunes detected device in recovery mode, you must restore this ipod before it can be used with Itunes".

I'm having the same loop message appear when trying to sync my new Ipod Shuffle "Itunes has detected a device in recovery mode. You must restore this device before it can be used w/ Itunes".
I've restored several times but it keeps looping back to the same message.  Turns out this message appeared with my last shuffle and I thought possibly the shuffle battery was depleted and it was time to get a new one.
    any suggestions?

    If you restore from backup.
You should have made sure that everything was on your computer bef ore updating anyway.  Did you fail to do that?
All pics taken with iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, most especially before any update/restore/etc.  Did you fail to do that?

  • New ipod to replace stolen one, current iTunes, PC laptop - not happy! Help

Okay so here is my problem - I'll try and describe what I've done as best I can. I've been through all the Apple help and can't see any error message info like the one I've had.
Recently got new 30gB black iPod to replace a stolen one. As they only come with USB chargers I decided to charge mine on my work PC computer which does not have any iPod/iTunes software (this is where I think it started to go wrong...)
I then plugged it into my laptop with iTunes already installed from previous iPod. Error message came up on laptop saying iPod recognised, but there may be a problem with the new hardware and it may not work properly. Then the icon disappears and I can't access the iPod through anything - not seen in iTunes, My Computer - nowhere. Hmm...
Incidentally my wireless internet at home is down and I can't get online on my laptop (which might also be part of the problem).
However, I plugged the new iPod into a colleague's work computer with iTunes installed, it recognised my iPod, and I was able to register it online and give it a name. Tried it back on my laptop again to update my iTunes library and nothing. Incidentally I have got the latest iPod update on my laptop but seeing is it's not recognising it in the first place other than saying there's a problem, I can't do anything with it.
I've tried putting the iPod into disk mode when attached to the laptop but it says Ok to disconnect, there's no other change in the screen. And I don't see a folder with an ! nor a sad face so all in all I'm totally stumped.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? I'm really worried about totally uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling because I don't have an external storage drive yet and I'm frightened I'll lose all my music.
Please please please can anyone help? thanks x

    hiya!
interesting. was the previous ipod also a video? the videos and nanos have more features, and that seems to make them a bit more sensitive to a slightly flaky USB connection than some other models.
let's check to see if this is an issue for you:
iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB
... i've also seen the Toshiba treatment work on a Dell (note that the video probably won't charge off the Dell if you try this).
iPod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop
    keep us posted.

  • ITunes thinks my new iPod is my old one

Brand new iPod vid. Xmas present. Very happy.
Installed software, plugged into iMac, songs update onto the iPod flawlessly UNTIL a message informs me some songs have not been updated, because my iPod software is out of date... please visit apple.com/ipod etc etc.
What the ****? How is it out of date. It's brand new. What's more: the newly installed iPod updater can't see any ipod, even though its mounted on the desktop. AND: in iTunes, under the iPod options, there are no options for videos or photos, and lo-and-behold, there are no photos or videos on my ipod.
Up until yesterday I used my 3rd Gen 20gb ipod. Does my iMac think I still am using that old one? Is that why it wont stick my photos/vids onto my new one? And how can I update my iPod software if the updater wont see it?
Rebooted, repaired permissions, reset ipod, shutdown itunes and restarted it, nothing works. Do i need to delete some file that is perhaps telling itunes that the ipod is a 3rd gen? Somebody help i want to watch videos on it!!!
I have run software update. Nothing to update from software update. I've just plugged it into a PC, it works flawlessly, iTunes displays all the correct options for videos and pictures and also iPod Updater works too, I restored the iPod and then returned to my iMac hoping for a change.... Nada. Still no video/photo options in iTunes, updater shouts at me to plug in an iPod. What the **** is going on. I even tried dragging my iTunes to the Trash and reinstalling. No change.
I'm pretty sure I'm not missing any iPod updater. I've installed it from the iPod cd, run software update, and manually downloaded the latest version (11-17 right?). And it still won't see my ipod. And itunes still thinks my ipod is out of date (cos im pretty sure it thinks its my old ipod!!!).
Believe it or not I'm right to some extent. Check this out. When you plug an iPod in and go to the iPod options in iTunes, in the top right hand corner of the window it informs you in pale grey text what version of software is on your current iPod. Mine says 6.0.
    6.0!!!!!!!!!!!
Version 6.0 of a 5th gen VIDEO iPod. I think not you scumbag computer.
My 3rd gen was I believe on software version 2.3, so i have no idea why it says 6.0, but i know that my 5th gen definitely shouldnt be on 6.0. But perhaps itunes does in fact believe that this is my old ipod and is therefore refusing to put videos and pictures on it. How the **** do i convince it otherwise?
This is fairly crap from Apple i must say. I cant be the only person in the world to plug in a 5th gen after using a 3rd gen so why all the hassle? Its ridiculous and my ENTIRE christmas is ruined......
    Seriously tho, somebody help me

I have had the same problem. I followed the directions I see here to delete ipod.plist file in preferences and then reconnect ipod. I did this and I still can't get the video preference to show up. Is there something else I need to do? When I try to do the ipod update it still says that my ipod has an old os on it which is the os that is on my 3rd generation ipod. I really am very frustrated. I did everything that you did and feel like you do. I just still can't get it to show video preference. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm losing my mind!!! Thanks!

  • Tech challenged; have new iPod to replace old iPod....loading issues

    Hi all,
I just received a new iPod classic, 160GB, to replace my old wheel-type iPod, which froze up last year. I still have my iTunes library and software from the previous iPod, and wish to transfer that library to my new iPod. When I hook up the new iPod to my PC, it does not go to any sort of set-up process....just sits there saying 'connected'. Battery is charged.
Do I need to download newer version iTunes software? If I do, will this hurt my existing Library?
    Thanks for any help.

You need iTunes version 7.4 or later (the current version is 7.7). You can download that here.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
The music in your current iTunes library will remain unaffected.

  • New Ipod to replace Old Ipod

I just recently purchased a 64G Ipod to replace my 32G Ipod...how do I sync my new Ipod to my computer to download all the music, audiobooks, etc. that I have on my old Ipod and my computer?

Hi Linda: All your music, audiobooks, etc should already be on your computer. Yes? All you need ot do is plug in the new iPod, give it a distinctive name and sync as you did with your existing 32gB iPod. You can use multiple iPods on a single account/computer.
    Hope this helps

there are two ways to restore your data from a TM backup.
the first is the one I described. you don't need to do anything, just follow the instructions during the setup assistant when you first turn the computer on. it will ask you if you want to import your data from a TM backup. say yes and follow the instructions. this method only restores your user data and applications but does not touch any system files.
the second method is different and it was suggested by the other posters. it wipes the hard drive and restores the entire computer including system files and everything to the exact state it was in at the backup time. this should only be used when restoring on the same computer or on the same EXACT hardware model. the fact that your new computer is also a macbook is not enough. the processor and the graphics card may have been upgraded since you bought your old computer. this happens all the time. if they did then the old install will lack necessary drivers for the new hardware and it will not work if you restore the entire system from the old computer to the new one.
Bottom line is, unless you are absolutely sure that your new computer has exact same specs and exact same hardware as the old one, use method one outlined above.

    - If you purchase a new iPod apple will give you a 10% discound for turning in an old iPod.

  • New iPod but had old one...

My husband had an iPod and an account already set up on our computer. He got me an iPod for my birthday, and I downloaded his songs onto my iPod; now, however, when I go into my account, the songs are grey and I can't select anything. I just wanted to create some folders so that I can organize it. Do I need to delete the songs from my iPod, redownload iTunes, and start over? Is there a way to transfer the songs my husband has already loaded onto our computer to my iPod without interferring with his account?

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manage the content manually.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.
