Just how bad is the HD screen on the T530

Hey everyone. I'm buying a laptop for my father whose main criteria are:
Overall build quality
(backlit) Keyboard and trackpad quality
At least 15" screen
Upgradeability
International warranty and customer service
Whilst it is overkill for what he wants to do, AFAICS the T530 is the only thinkpad that fits the bill.
The only problem is his eyesight isn't what it used to be and he needs eye-glasses to read the screen on his current laptop which has a 15" 1366x768 display. Hence, a higher resolution screen is out of the question (I understand there is dpi scaling but it is never implemented perfectly across all apps).
I see people warning against the HD display all the time, so I'd like to know just how bad is the contrast, colour reproduction etc?

I understand where you're coming from however I don't mean travel like how a businessman travels. My father just  spends a lot of time abroad and an external monitor will not be practical. I'm surprised no-one seems to have any experience with the HD screen. Thank you for your suggestions though.

  • How bad is the Verizon customer service?

how bad is the Verizon customer service? Well let me tell you. I just got off the phone with from their Finance Department, who called me, and they asked when I would be paying my bill. I answered never. He asked why. I said I had a billing dispute. He asked to go over the bill together (the first rep to do this) having going over the issues and reviewing the notes he said “oh wow”. I informed him that I filed a complaint to the BBB, FTC and FCC and filed a small claims suit against them. He said he understood why. He then said he would unsuspended my 3 lines (I have already disconnected 2 of them) and place my account in a “billing dispute status”. I said thank you. After about 30 minutes I called back when my saw my lines still suspended. Both the finance department and customer service both said the lines were still suspended both blaming the other department as a reason. Got to love the Verizon teamwork. Any suggestions?

They may have stated over the phone your account was in a "billing dispute status" however you can ONLY do so in writing.
    From the customer agreement:
HOW AND WHEN CAN I DISPUTE CHARGES?
If you're a Postpay customer, you can dispute your bill within 180 days of receiving it, but unless otherwise provided by law or unless you're disputing charges because your wireless device was lost or stolen, you still have to pay all charges until the dispute is resolved. If you're a Prepaid customer, you can dispute a charge within 180 days of the date the disputed charge was incurred. YOU MAY CALL US TO DISPUTE CHARGES ON YOUR BILL OR ANY SERVICE(S) FOR WHICH YOU WERE BILLED, BUT IF YOU WISH TO PRESERVE YOUR RIGHT TO BRING AN ARBITRATION OR SMALL CLAIMS CASE REGARDING SUCH DISPUTE, YOU MUST WRITE TO US AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE ADDRESS ON YOUR BILL, OR SEND US A COMPLETED NOTICE OF DISPUTE FORM (AVAILABLE AT VERIZONWIRELESS.COM), WITHIN THE 180–DAY PERIOD MENTIONED ABOVE. IF YOU DO NOT NOTIFY US IN WRITING OF SUCH DISPUTE WITHIN THE 180-DAY PERIOD, YOU WILL HAVE WAIVED YOUR RIGHT TO DISPUTE THE BILL OR SUCH SERVICE(S) AND TO BRING AN ARBITRATION OR SMALL CLAIMS CASE REGARDING ANY SUCH DISPUTE.
Simply send in a notice of dispute form. Since you have already filed a "small claims case", I would think it may be unnecessary, though, but it can't hurt to be thorough.

  • How bad is the performance hit with RTMPT?

In a conversation with engineers recently at a CDN it was suggested to me that streaming all video over RTMPT only was a viable solution to the barriers posed by firewalls and proxies blocking port 1935.  They indicated that they had seen no signifigant performance degradation with tunneling and that many of their clients were making the switch from "rollover" type connection models to connection via RTMPT only.
This ran counter to my notion of the process.  I have always thought the packet overhead was signifigant.
Is it?  How bad is the performance hit for streaming live h.264 video?

    Hmmm...  That's quite a hit.
I'm trying to determine the best strategy for reaching the most people with the least performance hit.  A guy lays out his strategy here:
    http://www.kensodev.com/2010/02/19/rtmp-being-blocked-by-firewalls-flash-media-server/
He basically says ditch 1935.  Never use it.  Always use 80.  Like this:
    rtmp://your_ip_address:80/app_name
    If that fails, do this:
    rtmpt://your_ip_address:80/app_name
Does that seem valid?  Does that first option avoid the perfomance hit of tunnelling while getting you more connections?  If so, it makes me think there is no benefit at all to connecting via 1935.

  • Why is my battery life so bad on my iphone 4s. I signed up for a 2 yr contract with a new iphone 4s. The battery life didn't last a day. I went back to Apple and they replaced it with another iphone 4s. This one is just as bad. The iOS 5.0.1 does nothing!

I have never been so disappointed with an Apple Product such as the Iphone 4s. When I signed up with a new 2 year contract, I received my iphone 4s. I charged it fully the night before, then it didn't even last the day (with minimal usage). I turned off Location Services, Wi Fi, and Bluetooth, this helped a bit. But what is the point of turning these services off, when I NEED THEM!!!  The wonderful new Siri doesn't work properly without Location Services turned on.
So I upgraded to the iOS 5.0.1. version - that did absolutely nothing to assist the battery life.
Apple, what are you going to do about it?  My new Apple phone is a LEMON!
If I had of known how bad the battery life is on the iphone 4s, I would have got a Samsung Galaxy 2!!!!!

It doesn't really matter whether I am talking to Apple or not (and I'm sure they monitor these comments), I want everyone to know how bad this new iphone 4s is, and all of it's problems.
Apple have already launched an upgrade to the software - it obviously did not help, as many around the world would concur.
As far as being patient and waiting for another "update in the works" is concerned, it is just not satisfactory. This is not a cheap phone, and those who are experiencing these problems, should not have to be paying a substantial amount of money, for a very smart phone, that obviously, has some serious problems.

  • Curious....just how popular is the Mic

    Some observations and a question:
I bought my Micro last November and it has been in steady use for months now without a headphone jack problem or any serious reset/jam/stuck issues. Maybe I've been lucky or maybe the problems that are frequently reported here are related to a small bad manufacturing batch (similar to the iPod Nano) and user errors or corrupt files. Or maybe its a combination of all of these.
I've also noticed the way the Micro is sold in electronics stores. I frequent Best Buy and Comp USA because they are nearby and close to one another. Both usually have a solitary Micro, usually sitting askew in its security stand, frequenlty inoperable, next to 5 or 6 various iPods and one or two even older Creative products. We are told that Apple has 75 percent of the market so I understand the space devoted to iPods, but would it hurt Creative to offer retailers some incenti'ves or in store displays?
I see here on the board that a so-called "second edition" Micro is out, which says to me that Creative is still pleased enough with the product to have invested in this effort. I wonder though, has anyone seen any estimates anywhere on the net just how many Micro's Creative has sold?

I would guess that the micro is far and away Creative's biggest DMP seller, helped in large part by its advertising campaign last Christmas - no other Creative player has gotten that kind of advertising. Also, the steady stream of firmware updates for the Micro, whil other models have been ignored, indicates that the Micro is Creative's most important player. I would guess that many Micro owners out there have never even heard of the Touch or the Xtra.

  • Just how bad is this phone ? (E70 revisited)

I have actually forgotten how frustrating Nokia phones can be as I had confirmed by (then) new E70 to the bottom drawer because with the firrmware on it, it wouldn't work in my bluetooth enabled BMer.
What joy when I learned of the new version. Could it be that version 3.0633.09.04 (where do these numbers come from) would solve my problem ?
Well I don't know. In fact I don't even know why I tried to put it on the phone. First I downloaded the latest PC Suite (the phone I have which actually works is NOT a Nokia, so I didn't have that on the PC ). Then I downloaded the software updater. Then I connected by recharged (and still plugged into the adaptor) E70, and fired up the updater.
Next the USB message that my phone was disconnected from PC-Suite appeared, and as predicted the updater actually told me there was an update. I now had the option to leave or continue. When I continued, I got a message which told me the updater could not verify my phone !
No WAIT !! I got past this by restarting, and while the message to get out was still on the screen, I used the utility in PCSuite to reselect my phone, and when the updater continued it started the download of 48.1M. Great.
Next it came to the update bit. Again the process failed and again the solution was to do the little tinker with PC Suite to get past that point. In fact I got all the way to where the phone reboots, and shows the Nokia test screen. Here the phone seems to reconnect itself, but either its not fast enough or it's not connecting to the updater, because it reports that the update has failed. Sad but true.
Should I have known ? Should I have guessed ? I have a buddy who has had an E61, an E70 and now wants to try the E90. Is he crazy or what ? S60 does for telephony what Locusts do for corn. If only words would describe how bad this series of phones really is...
For those of you still here, who are in the queues for the E90, I admire your sense of endevour ! May the force be with you.

  • 5800 Music- how bad is the freezing problem

I am looking at buying the 5800. However after looking at hunderds of reviews and comments it seems to me that users either love or hate their musicexpress with not much inbetween. Knowing that users will often only vent their anger when things go wrong can anyone tell me how bad the freezing problem is that seems to raise its head often with this phone. Are there many people who have this phone not have this problem or is the problem only occur when thier is some conflict with some app.
One other questions is it possible to use the phone to keep reasonabvle amount of notes- I am about to head overseas and want to use the phone also to replace a notebook and diary and also to use its many other functions
    with thanks

I do not have this problem, then again my 5800 has not been working in anyway except perfect ever since I bought it, except for the crashing browser on v30.
Yes you can keep a lot of notes on the phone, Although you may want to find a "note app" like express note to save the notes onto memory card if you plan to use it all too often.

  • How bad is the service just to get a missing screw of a MBR retina

    Hi,
I am very disappointed about the service provided by apple for a missing body screw of a Retina MBP bottom part. The process is to go to a service center spend there 30-60 min to report that a screw is missing and to answer stupid questions such as how can the screw be missed. Hello a screw get missed if it gets loose
As all service centers in Singapore do not even have a stupid screw that just cost a few cents on stock.
It must be ordered and than you will have to go back again 1 -2 days later to pick it up and let them screw it back.
That is not a costumer service I would expect from a device that cost several 1000 of dollars and paying extra for an apple care pack.
Dear apple costumer service, please provide me an answer how you will overcome such a disappointing service, and provide me an email where to complain about this issue.
    Best regards,
    Christian

I'm sorry to hear this. What you have to know is that Apple wasn't attending you directly, but a third-party company that provides Apple support, and the experience with these companies is terrible in most of the cases. For example, I have heard cases of some repairs that took months on a Spanish reseller, but it's a worldwide problem.
I recommend you to contact with Apple in Singapore directly, from their phone number > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57#S

  • Just how "dangerous" is the Magsafe magnet to DV tapes and such?

    Hello!
I just upgraded to a new, 2.2ghz MBP - very nice. I noticed however that the magnet in the Magsafe power port on the MBP itself is very strong - and the user guide says to keep sensitive things (like iPods and credit cards) at least 1" from that corner.
This isn't a huge problem, but I'm worried about how far the magnet can actually damage things like DV video tapes, which are more sensitive to magnetic fields than an iPod hard drive or credit card ribbon. For example, when using my Powerbook, I would sometimes drop a DV tape (in its box) into my laptop case when carrying my Powerbook. The pocket I'd use is inside the case, right up against the machine itself - it would be a little more than half way between the Magsafe port and front of the MBP, if I put the Mac in the case like I normally do - about 4-5".
Thanks for clarifying for me, I'm not familiar enough with strong magnets to be sure whether or not it's a problem.
    -Dan

Actually the magnetic field diminishes at a rate that's nearer to the inverse cube of distance. So at 2 inches the effect is less than 15% what it is at 1 inch.
You should keep sensitive stuff away from changing magnetic fields, but the constant field from the magsafe connector will have little effect on most magnetic storage media.

  • If I use the new sync-function, I keep losing my bookmarks or at least some of them during syncronisation. Is the new sync just as bad as the old one?

Just like with the old version of Firefox Sync I keep losing at least parts of my bookmarks when I'm using the new Sync version.
Anytime I change any of my bookmarks on one of my computers, I not only miss the change on other computers, but I also loose parts of the original bookmarks as well.
To me it seems that the new Sync is no better than the old one?

When you switched over to the new account, when you set it up the profile was blank and the name was: "uglings Firefox auf home1-ugling". Then on another login for the same computer, the name on the account was the same, so you changed the name.
So when you added bookmarks on the newly named computer account (the restricted account), all of the bookmark folders disappeared.
Summary for clarification, sorry for the repetitiveness.
    STR:
    # unlink account from old sync
    # create new windows account on same computer
    # on new account create sync account that has a blank profile and wait to sync. name is CILBMHVM6DT
    # go to the previous windows account and add the new sync account to the old profile. (i did get a warning that there was an older account that was signed into, but I hit sync anyway) name was WIN-CILBMHVM6DT
    # Wait for it to sync.
    # rename the computer name associated with sync on old profile because it has the same name.(renamed old one to WIN-2)
    # Add bookmarks to new windows account
    # Go back to old windows account and see the new folder, but some previous folders are missing and bookmarks are out of their original folder.
    Expected:
Merged folders to remain same file structure
    Results:
Some bookmarks are not in folders that no longer appear in the bookmarks toolbar folder.
2 accounts on the same computer connected to the same Firefox Sync account had the same name and deleted some bookmark folders.
I filed a bug on this:
However in the meantime we can only recreated the folders that are missing on the accounts that you have set up. If this happens again, I will ask if it has to do with the unique identifier of each device attached to an account (I am assuming that its just the name that we renamed) But please also continue the discussion for this in the bug.
    Thank you!

  • How bad is the  fur lining?

I was able to see an incase with the fur lining yesterday. I have read where several people do not like it because the fur sheds on a white Mac. But, is that enough of a problem to NOT buy one?
My other choice is a Brenthaven MetroLite. It is larger than the incase, but if the furr is a real problem, I would buy the Brenthaven.
The Apple Store I go to has both in stock.
    Thank,
    Pat

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Anytime you get things loose inside a notebook case, you can get that stuck in between the keys, blocking the ports, scratching the screen in addition to the possible aesthetic mess. If a case is so poorly built to have things get lose from its own design, I wouldn't buy it.

  • CRC Errors? How bad is the situation?

Please in broad terms, how would you advise to a friend willing to buy a KT4VL considering the CRC errors some users have claimed at this forum?
    Thanks, Gustavo.-

    Hi!
I have the kt4Ultra(6590)and jumped from bios 1.1 to 1.3.
I too noticed different HD speeds when using HDtach.
The Burst rate where lower with the new bios but sisoft sandra gave me the same performance.
SO i dont think burst transfer rates is everything.
In PCmark2002 i got 1012 point on my WD 80gig SE disk, not raided or anything.
I have never experienced any crc errors with either one of the bioses.I uppgraded the bios as i needed support for the XP2500Barton cpu.
