Just installed Lion.  MNow my Microsoft Office suite won't work  What's wrong

I just installed Lion.  Now my Microsoft Office Suite won't work.  What's wrong ??

If you had used the search box in the upper right of this page you could have answered this question on your own.
You have a few options: restore back to Snow Leopard from the backup you made before you installed Lion; upgrade to Office for Mac 2011; install Pages from the Mac App Store; use TextEdit; install one of the many open source Office replacements that can found.

I just download mountain lion to my mac,  now microsoft office suite doesn't work....it says 'you can't open the application 'microsoft word' because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.  What does this mean and what do I have to do to fix it?? HELP!!

Install Snow Leopard on another boot partition, or upgrade Microsoft Office to a newer version, or use any number of better alternatives. Some of them are free.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice ($10)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for over a year now. Life is better without Microsoft.

  • Microsoft Office 2011 won't work with Mountain Lion update

I have an early 2011 version Macbook Pro.  Until yesterday I have been running Lion, I updated to Mountain Lion last night and now my Microsoft Office 2011 won't work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

When I try to open any MS Office program or file I get an error message that reads "Microsoft Office cannot open because of a problem.  Check with the developer to make sure Microsoft (Outlook, Word etc.) works with this version of OS X you may need to reinstall the application..."  the problem is I bought this Mac used and I don't have the disc to reinstall the application.   I've gone to the MS Office 2011 Mac website and downloaded a service pack and an update (the only two things available to me) but that still doesn't help.  Where would I find the update you are describing?

  • After installing Lion, my microsoft office suite doesn't work anymore, and show this message: Application Power PC no longer available. How can I resolve it?

Is there any possibilty to recover the use of my Microsoft Office suite, which doesn't work anymore after installing Lion?
The programs display this error message: "no puede abrir la aplicación Microsoft Excel (o any other) porque las aplicaciones Power PC ya no son compatibles"
    thanks for your help

You will need to upgrade your suite of MS programs.
Older suites, like MS Office 2004, use program versions written for Macs with PPC processors. In order to use those apps in pre-Lion OS's on an Intel-processor machine, it was necessary to install Rosetta, software designed just for the purpose of using PPC-apps on an Intel machine.
Unfortunately, Lion does not support Rosetta, so those apps no longer work.
Solution - update them to a version which will work in Lion, such as the MS Office 2008 suite, or newer if available.

Niel is right. Older versions of MS Office are not compatible with Mountain Lion --one of the many unwelcome features of a truly unfriendly, misguided OS.
If you have more than one Mac, and ANY of them is compatible with Snow Leopard, downgrade it. In fact, there is no reason to upgrade to Mountain Lion unless we absolutely MUST. I was VERY happy with Apple from 10.3 through 10.6, so I jumped the gun and upgraded the computer I use for email to Lion as soon as it became available --a decision I have come to regret.
If I were you, I would avoid the expense AND the trouble of buying another MS Office suite by simply downgrading back to the previous OS. If downgrading is not an option, LibreOffice is a great piece of software, fully compatible with MS Office, and free.
Poor advice. Please avoid passing your personal disattisfaction, most likely caused by your own Computer habits, onto others. Many, many million of users are running Mountain Lion without an issue.

  • After installing Lion I lost Microsoft Office. Is there a patch or way to restore excel

After installing OS Lion Microsoft Office with Word & Excel was lost. How can I recover those programs?

This is something else: Office 2004, based on PPC code, cannot be used in Lion. This is sad, as 2004 was the best MS Office ever. If you like it, stay with Leopard or SL, if Lion, then 2011 (and 2008, I guess).

  • 2009 macbook running slow after installing 2011 microsoft office, skype won't work either

Daughter just installed microsoft office 2011 ( her college sells it to students for $15.00 & you can use it for 4 years) on her 2 year old macbook.  Computer is now running very slow and she isn't able to skype either.  She got rid of her old microsoft program. Any clue what is going on?  Could she need more memory or something?  Maybe a trip to the genius bar over Thanksgiving break?  She installed it because she was unable to open many documents she was recieving from professors because she was running an old version of office.

    Karen...
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
And the startup disk may need repairing.
Follow the instructions here >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Microsoft Office Suite Won't Print

Any Microsoft office product will not print and I'm getting this message:
"Word cannnot print due to a problem with a current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected i Print Center. You may need to print again or adjust your printer settings."
This message pops up no matter which printer I select.
Three things may have contributed (or not!):
    1. just added iWork 08 & iLife 08
    2. used the most recent update of Microsoft
    3. printer/fax machine MAY HAVE been plugged into computer when fax tried to transmit (can't remember for sure as I've tried to problem solve)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem.
    I am running 10.4.10 and Office 11.3.7
I have just reinstalled the office suite and upgraded it.
In all of the office applications, when I try to print, it is unable to create a quick preview in the print dialog box and I am unable to create pdf's or anything else.
In word, the exact error message is
    Microsoft Word Error Message:
"Word cannnot print due to a problem with a current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected in Print Center. You may need to print again or adjust your printer settings."
In Excel, a different message pops up. The message is...
    Microsoft Word Error Message:
Microsoft Excel could not communicate with the printer.
    There are several possible reasons:
    - There may not be enough memory available. Try closing files and programs you aren't using.
    - Your printer or its driver may not be set up correctly. You may need to adjust your printer settings.
    - If you use a network for printing, there may be a problem with the network connections or the printer driver.
    - There may be loose cables or a bad connection between your computer and printer.
I get these messages when Excel is the only program running.
Additionally, I have already reinstalled the printer's drivers (Brother HL2070N).
And yes, I am able to print from every other application I have tried (Safari, pages, numbers etc)
    Thanks in advance!

  • Microsoft Office suite won't open

In an effort to save space on my hard drive I deleted a bunch of applications that I don't use. I deleted Microsoft Entourage & Messenger (since I don't use them) and continued to be able to use Word for about a day.
Then I closed Word and when I tried to open it later that day. I wouldn't open. Itwill bounce once in the dock and then do nothing. Excel & Powerpoint don't work either. I'm pretty sure I've shot myself in the foot somehow by deleting the other two programs but am trying to see if there's a way to get Word working again.
I'm also assuming that the easiest fix is to reinstall the programs but I'm currently 3,000 miles away from home (and my reinstall disc). Is there anything that I can do to get Word to open?
Also when I looked in console I got this message:
    Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework/Versions/12/M icrosoftComponentPlugin
    Referenced from: /Applications/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Word
    Reason: image not found
    and for excel
    Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib
    Referenced from: /Applications/Microsoft Excel.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Excel
    Reason: image not found
    Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

You could try creating a new user account on the computer, logging out of the current and into the new one, and checking the behavior then. If that doesn't help, I think you'll have to settle for using NeoOffice or possibly GoogleDocs until you can reinstall Office.

  • I recently installed Lion and now my software update won't work

Everytime I try to click on software udpate it says "Checking for new software" with a progress bar and then
"The Software Update Server is not responding. Check to make sure your network connection is operating normally. If there are no issues with your connection, contact your network administrator for assistance."
My internet connection is fine and I suspect this is related to the Lion download. Please help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • What happened to the Microsoft Office suite when I loaded Lion?

I loaded Lion operating system last night and rushed without reading all of the fine print. After the Lion was loaded I received a notice that Microsoft Office Suite was not supported. My questions are, 1) Can Lion support the Microsoft Office Suites (maybe a newer version) 2) Can I return to the previous Operating System?
    Never mind!
    Thanks

    1. Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 & 2011 versions support OS X Lion
    2. Yes, you can downgrade to Snow Leopard if you have up-to-date Time Machine backups, however I won't recommend you to do that.
Over the weekend Microsoft published a knowledge base article that outlines some known issues with Office for Mac on OS X 10.7. Overall, if you have Office 2004 and rely on it, then do not upgrade to OS X Lion until you have an alternative Office version installed (2008 or preferably 2011). Office 2004 is PowerPC code, and as with Intuit's Quicken 2007 and earlier versions, if you install Lion then you will not be able to launch Office 2004.

  • Why can't I open my Microsoft Word app? I just installed Lion.

I just installed Lion, and now I get a message saying "You can't open the application Microsoft Word because Power PC applications are no longer supported." What gives?

Alternatively you can look at the Word compatible comparable applications which have been upgraded to Intel Mac Universal format from the links on my Crossplatform page*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
The only reason to upgrade Office is if something non-standard in the Office suite is needed.

  • Installing Microsoft Office Suite, and error message re: StuffIt Expander

    Hi,
I recently tried to install Microsoft Office Suite (Office2001-906UpdateEN.bin) on my computer, but keep getting an error message saying "Sorry, but this version of StuffIt Expander requires version 6.5 or newer of the StuffIt Engine. Error -43" I have StuffIt Lite 6.5.1 in my Applications folder, which includes StuffIt Expander. However, when I try opening StuffIt Expander, I get an identical error message. Can anyone help?
(FYI, since erasing my hard disk and reinstalling my applications recently, I've experienced other problems, too, such as AppleWorks' spell-check function not working, and MacLink no longer being available. I don't know if any of these problems are related -- and/or if I just made mistakes in reinstalling?)
    Thanks.

    Hi, Elizabeth -
You should be able to download the newer version of Stuffit Expander, since downloading does not involve unstuffing. Once the download has been received, your browser may be trying to invoke the version of Stuffit Expander that's on your drive in order to automatically unstuff it for you - and that's what is causing the message to be displayed.
Look for the uncompressed download, probably in a .sit or .sit.hqx format.
Then insert your latest OS 9 Install CD, and locate the Aladdin Software folder. For install CDs for OS 9.1 and later, that will here - (CD) >> Software Installers >> Aladdin Software. For install CDs for OS 9.0.4 and earlier, it will be here - (CD) >> Software Installers >> Internet Access >> Aladdin Software. Dig into the Aladdin Software folder, and you'll find an uncompresssed copy of Stuffit Expander, v. 5.5 or v. 6.0. Copy that version to the Hard drive.
Then drag the icon of the freshly downloaded (and still compressed) newer version of Stuffit Expander onto the icon of the older version of Stuffit Expander, and let go when the icon highlights - it should then be decompressed without problem.
Once that is done, run the installer for the new version.
