Just Installed Tiger , what happens to Panther ?

I have just installed 10.4 and updated , what happens to Panther 10.3.9 , do I have to delete or trash it somehow to save hardrive space or does it just stay on the computer ?

True; however, its best to wait a few days prior to trashing the old system folder. The reason why that old system folder is there is in case you need anything out of it or if the new OS fails, so you have the old system folder to fall back on.

  • Just installed tiger, can't shutdown

Hi I just installed Tiger on my Emac. It works great. Just that when I initiate shut down, screen stays on. everything quits o.k. after finder quits all I have is the desktop picture, and the computer stays on.
I am able to shutdown by pressing power button and since all apps closed o.k. there is no data loss. I do not have Classic running when this happens. I have restarted from Tiger disk and run "verify" and "repair" disk permissions.
Any other ideas what is going on?
    thanks

Also, I would try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
Repairing the hard drive is different then Repairing Permissions.
    Here's a no shutdown tip sheet that covers what macjack helpfully provided in more detail;
This is for a Mac that won't shut down. Launch Activity Monitor (or Process Viewer if you're running a pre-Panther OSX) and see if there are any active applications besides Activity Monitor ( items with icons next to the name), select them, and click Quit Process.
If an app won't quit by clicking Quit, click Force Quit. Then try shutting down again.
If that does'nt work start killing off system-managed programs ( items without icons ) . Be sure to quit only the programs your user account is running; don't quit anything identified as "root" or "nobody" in the User column- and whatever you do, don't quit any of the following : loginwindow, Window Server, ATSServer, or SystemUIServer, which make up the foundation of Mac OS.
Quit one process at a time, and then shut down after each kill until you find success!
    I wish you luck!
p.s.If you install two of a single user licensed third-party application on different computers which are networked, this symptom may occur. If that is the case, a solution is to perform "Erase and Install" for both computers.

  • Just installed Tiger and having problems

I just installed 10.4.3 with an Archive and Install. Since then I have had a host of problems and tried a variety of fixes. Some have worked yet in general the machine freezes or slows down to an incredibly slow pace. And then I have to restart.
    What I have done:
    Initial Archive and Install
    * Office 2004 products not working, restart cpu, get blue screen
    * Start up in Safe mode and get rid of MIcrosoft Office Database Daemon in Start-up Items
    * Computer restarts but still sluggish have to Force Quit
    Other problems:
    Printing to Epson Printer
    * Get a message "the printer "(null)" could not be found in your list of printers.
    I don't have a printer "(null)"
FYI - I am printing via Airport and have added the printer to the list and picked the driver.
I switched to Mail and ical because of the Entourage problems.
    * Mail seems slow and when I am loading a simple no attachment message, I get a spinning wheel.
    * Mail Help window has disappeared.
    Safari/Firefox
    * Slower loading than 10.3.9. Spinning Wheel.
    What I have tried:
    * Fixed permissions
    * Booted from the Tiger disk and repaired the disk. No repairs were done.
Each of these steps solved the problems immediately but as soon as I start multitasking between mail, Office 2004, Safari everything is slow and often ends up Force Quitting at least on program.
    What would you do next?
    1. Should I reinstall 10.4.3 from the disk with a Basic install? And then upgrade to 10.4.6 to see if that will fix my problems?
    2. Or should I do an Erase and Install? (which I am trying to avoid?)
The majority my work is done in email and Office products. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that will get me out of this quandary.

Yes and no, depending on which types of documents you have.  Word processing and spreadsheets go to Pages and Numbers respectively.  There is no equivalent for draw and database in iWork.  Others have reported varying success with converting those documents to third party apps, however.

  • Just installed Arch - what now?

I just finished successfully installing archlinux - What now?
I had a quick peek at the wiki but it wasn't very helpful.
Playing around I couldn't get a single package to install - no x.org or kde. pacman kept coughing up a load of errors - for instance when I tried to do pacman -Syu it told me that it couldn't sync with the belnet mirrors for core, extra and community packages. 'failed to synchronize ... transient resolver error '
This can't be a repo problem because I installed it using internet files.
The fact that I can't even start to use it is frustrating - even grub didn't seem to pick up my windows partition even though the grub list looked fine and I installed it to the right harddrive afaik.
Any help? (especially for getting x.org and kde running! (or any packages installable for that matter!))

The best point to start is the Beginners Guide in the Wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide
By the way: a lot of questions can be answered by searching the wiki.
Regarding your grub problem: Add this to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file:
    # Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
The string (hd0,0) points to my windows partition, which is the first partition on the first hard drive (counting starts with 0)
You see i'm sure those lines were in the grub boot list, but I will double check.
EDIT: Ah. They were commented out. Fixed this problem
I tried changing the mirrors for pacman to use, but it still made errors:
Warning current locale is invalid; Using default "C" locale
    :: synchronising package databases...
error : failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.parrswood.manchester.sch.uk : transcient resolver failure
It says this for all of them, and did for the belnet mirror as well.
When I try to ping google it says unknown host - does that mean that my network isn't set up properly?

  • Just installed Tiger, where is........?

I bought the 4CD Tiger set from Applerescue and installed it on my 450 MHz G4 PowerPC on an empty spare 27 GB hard drive. The dock has a ? for iMovieHD. I also noticed iPhoto is no longer a part of OS X as it was in Panther. I did a custom install omitting the foreign languages and printer drivers. I still have Panther on the other HD in the machine. Can I copy iPhoto to the Tiger HD?
Did iMovieHD not install because of my processor speed (450MHz)? I have 768 MB RAM.
Does anybody have any experience with Tiger on a Blue & White 400 MHz G3?
    Tracy

The "?" in the Dock appears automatically when a previously installed icon becomes disconnected from its associated application. In other words the application no longer exists on the hard drive or has been moved or renamed.
The current version of iPhoto is 6.x. The version you had was from before Apple started selling the iLife bundle separately. There have been no free versions of iPhoto since version 2.x.
iMovieHD was released about a year ago (maybe a little earlier, I don't quite remember.) The only way to have it would be to purchase iLife '06 or a new Mac with which iLife came bundled free.
If iPhoto was included with your Panther discs, then you can install that version. I have no idea if it will work with Tiger, so you'll just have to try it and find out. Here's what you can do:
    Restoring Lost OS X Files
If you erase or otherwise "lose" an OS X system application or utility (such as Mail or Disk Utility, for example) you can restore them without having to reinstall OS X.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Read the documentation. Use Pacifist to extract a fresh copy of the missing application from the file archives on your OS X Installer disc. The file archives are usually found on the installer disc in the /System/Installations/ folder.
After restoring the application you need to reinstall the OS X Combo Updater for the version of OS X you currently have installed. This assures the new copy of the application is updated to the current version.
Lastly, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

  • Just installed Tiger 10.4.5 on my iBook but now....

....there seems to be a problem with connecting using dial-up. Seems that my password is being changed by "another application". This is the info that I got while searching for the reason as to why my password was entered twice making it impossible to get verified to get online just by dialing up as I usually did in the past.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what application this might possibly be???
The Tiger install went fine on my desktop, my beloved iLamp. On the iLamp I use a DSL connection & there was no problem with connecting after the install.

    HI, Modiver.
A common cause of problems after installing Mac OS X upgrades, e.g. from Panther to Tiger, or Mac OS X Updates, e.g.from 10.4.4 to 10.4.5, is that third-party Startup or Login Items that worked in the prior version of the operating system are incompatible with the new version of the operating system.
My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

Will the "new" itunes that I download "remember" my old playlists that I have now i the current itunes?
I really hope someone can help me

Your iTunes Library and your songs are in the iTunes folder that resides under Music in your Windows user account. The iTunes program is in your Windows program files folder with the other programs you run on your computer. When you reinstall the program it doesn't go near your library so your songs and playlist will still be there. However you should always back up your iTunes folder before making any changes to your system. In fact you should make regular backups in case you ever run into computer problems. There's a very extensive post written by forum member Buegie on backing up your music which you'll find at this link: Backing up iTunes

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.
If you DIY and mess up, your warranty will be VOIDED!
