  • Just installed tiger, can't shutdown

Hi I just installed Tiger on my Emac. It works great. Just that when I initiate shut down, screen stays on. everything quits o.k. after finder quits all I have is the desktop picture, and the computer stays on.
I am able to shutdown by pressing power button and since all apps closed o.k. there is no data loss. I do not have Classic running when this happens. I have restarted from Tiger disk and run "verify" and "repair" disk permissions.
Any other ideas what is going on?
    thanks

Also, I would try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
Repairing the hard drive is different then Repairing Permissions.
    Here's a no shutdown tip sheet that covers what macjack helpfully provided in more detail;
This is for a Mac that won't shut down. Launch Activity Monitor (or Process Viewer if you're running a pre-Panther OSX) and see if there are any active applications besides Activity Monitor ( items with icons next to the name), select them, and click Quit Process.
If an app won't quit by clicking Quit, click Force Quit. Then try shutting down again.
If that does'nt work start killing off system-managed programs ( items without icons ) . Be sure to quit only the programs your user account is running; don't quit anything identified as "root" or "nobody" in the User column- and whatever you do, don't quit any of the following : loginwindow, Window Server, ATSServer, or SystemUIServer, which make up the foundation of Mac OS.
Quit one process at a time, and then shut down after each kill until you find success!
    I wish you luck!
p.s.If you install two of a single user licensed third-party application on different computers which are networked, this symptom may occur. If that is the case, a solution is to perform "Erase and Install" for both computers.

  • Just installed Tiger and having problems

I just installed 10.4.3 with an Archive and Install. Since then I have had a host of problems and tried a variety of fixes. Some have worked yet in general the machine freezes or slows down to an incredibly slow pace. And then I have to restart.
    What I have done:
    Initial Archive and Install
    * Office 2004 products not working, restart cpu, get blue screen
    * Start up in Safe mode and get rid of MIcrosoft Office Database Daemon in Start-up Items
    * Computer restarts but still sluggish have to Force Quit
    Other problems:
    Printing to Epson Printer
    * Get a message "the printer "(null)" could not be found in your list of printers.
    I don't have a printer "(null)"
FYI - I am printing via Airport and have added the printer to the list and picked the driver.
I switched to Mail and ical because of the Entourage problems.
    * Mail seems slow and when I am loading a simple no attachment message, I get a spinning wheel.
    * Mail Help window has disappeared.
    Safari/Firefox
    * Slower loading than 10.3.9. Spinning Wheel.
    What I have tried:
    * Fixed permissions
    * Booted from the Tiger disk and repaired the disk. No repairs were done.
Each of these steps solved the problems immediately but as soon as I start multitasking between mail, Office 2004, Safari everything is slow and often ends up Force Quitting at least on program.
    What would you do next?
    1. Should I reinstall 10.4.3 from the disk with a Basic install? And then upgrade to 10.4.6 to see if that will fix my problems?
    2. Or should I do an Erase and Install? (which I am trying to avoid?)
The majority my work is done in email and Office products. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that will get me out of this quandary.

  • Just Installed Tiger , what happens to Panther ?

I have just installed 10.4 and updated , what happens to Panther 10.3.9 , do I have to delete or trash it somehow to save hardrive space or does it just stay on the computer ?

True; however, its best to wait a few days prior to trashing the old system folder. The reason why that old system folder is there is in case you need anything out of it or if the new OS fails, so you have the old system folder to fall back on.

  • Just installed Tiger, where is........?

I bought the 4CD Tiger set from Applerescue and installed it on my 450 MHz G4 PowerPC on an empty spare 27 GB hard drive. The dock has a ? for iMovieHD. I also noticed iPhoto is no longer a part of OS X as it was in Panther. I did a custom install omitting the foreign languages and printer drivers. I still have Panther on the other HD in the machine. Can I copy iPhoto to the Tiger HD?
Did iMovieHD not install because of my processor speed (450MHz)? I have 768 MB RAM.
Does anybody have any experience with Tiger on a Blue & White 400 MHz G3?
    Tracy

The "?" in the Dock appears automatically when a previously installed icon becomes disconnected from its associated application. In other words the application no longer exists on the hard drive or has been moved or renamed.
The current version of iPhoto is 6.x. The version you had was from before Apple started selling the iLife bundle separately. There have been no free versions of iPhoto since version 2.x.
iMovieHD was released about a year ago (maybe a little earlier, I don't quite remember.) The only way to have it would be to purchase iLife '06 or a new Mac with which iLife came bundled free.
If iPhoto was included with your Panther discs, then you can install that version. I have no idea if it will work with Tiger, so you'll just have to try it and find out. Here's what you can do:
    Restoring Lost OS X Files
If you erase or otherwise "lose" an OS X system application or utility (such as Mail or Disk Utility, for example) you can restore them without having to reinstall OS X.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Read the documentation. Use Pacifist to extract a fresh copy of the missing application from the file archives on your OS X Installer disc. The file archives are usually found on the installer disc in the /System/Installations/ folder.
After restoring the application you need to reinstall the OS X Combo Updater for the version of OS X you currently have installed. This assures the new copy of the application is updated to the current version.
Lastly, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

  • Just installed Tiger 10.4.5 on my iBook but now....

....there seems to be a problem with connecting using dial-up. Seems that my password is being changed by "another application". This is the info that I got while searching for the reason as to why my password was entered twice making it impossible to get verified to get online just by dialing up as I usually did in the past.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what application this might possibly be???
The Tiger install went fine on my desktop, my beloved iLamp. On the iLamp I use a DSL connection & there was no problem with connecting after the install.

    HI, Modiver.
A common cause of problems after installing Mac OS X upgrades, e.g. from Panther to Tiger, or Mac OS X Updates, e.g.from 10.4.4 to 10.4.5, is that third-party Startup or Login Items that worked in the prior version of the operating system are incompatible with the new version of the operating system.
My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

  • Computer shuts down when trying to install Tiger

I'm installing Tiger on several older G4's for my son's middle school and one of the machines a 500MHz AGP graphics, it shuts down whenever I try to run the install disk. It goes to the select main language part, and after that it shuts down.
    -the boot ROM is 4.2.8f1
-there's 6.7 GB of hard drive space left
-I did all of the updates on 10.2 bringing it up to 10.2.8
-I took out the SCSI card that was in it
-I realized it didn't have a battery in it so I took one out of the other machines that I had successfully installed Tiger on and it's still powering off.
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks!
I did not check the batteries charge, but I had just installed Tiger sucessfully on the machine I borrowed the battery from, so I assumed that it should have been ok.
The machine had OS 9.2 on it, and I was able to install 10.3 without any problems, even with the battery gone.

  • I have just installed Tger, Safari doesn't work

I have just installed Tiger and did software upgrades to get to 10.4.6. Now Safari doesn't open, It gives the warning box "You cannot open the application Safari, because it may be damaged or incoplete."
Now what do I do? There is no file on Downloads to reinstall the app....the Tiger installer will not allow me to re-install anything.
    Help

    red53215,
    1. How did you install Tiger?
    2. Have you repaired your startup disk?
    3. What version of Safari is installed?
    4. Tiger has a Custom Install feature, have you tried that?

I just installed Tiger, Logic 7.1 now doesnt open. It gets to initializing core audio and stays thereforever. Any advice ??? Thanks...

Hold the Control key down while Logic starts and it will skip loading drivers. Once in, select your driver and restart Logic. Should be fine.

  • Installing Tiger (errors, & "oh I just want to see my desktop again")

    So.
In order to install Tiger 10.4 I had to first install 10.3 onto my 10.2.8 iMac.
    Tonight I upgraded 10.2.8 to 10.3, successfully.
Then I tried to upgrade 10.3 to 10.4.
At the end of the game I received the message "There were errors installing 10.4. Please try installing again."
Installing again produces the same message.
But if I try to give up and restart from the internal hard drive, my only option is to select 10.4 on the internal hard drive, so obviously an unperfect version has latched on to it.
If I select this then I cannot reach my desktop, but do get a long text message which begins with "panic" and ends with "panic: We are hanging here..." [I can include a more exact version of the message when I see it again].
I have run Disk Utility> First Aid> Repair Disk, but I believe there were no necessary repairs that could be found.
Nonetheless I am now trying to install 10.4 again, though now my iMac is making these little hard-working clicking noises during the process.
So I'll update this if anything changes, but as of now
    My question is:
-How do I successfully install 10.4, or
-How do I rid the computer of this flawed version of 10.4, or
-How do I reinstall 10.3 at this point?
I just want to get back to being OK/ seeing my desktop.
At this point I am not sure how to eject the installation DVD, as the eject key on the keyboard's not doing it.
    Thank you.

    Update:
OK Well I got 10.3 re-installed alright (although the screen looks a little different-- everything on the desktop seems slightly bigger and less sharply defined).
I have yet to re-try 10.4, but I'm not sure what to do differently. I'll look at it again tomorrow perhaps there were some things off of apple.com I could download/update to make this go more smoothly).

  • Help! - Can't re-install Tiger, Panther etc.. Just won't start up -

I have erase my hard drive and tried to re-install Tiger. It successfully installed the 1st time, but every time I tried update, software update quit, and then safari quit when i tried to download the updates manually. Shortly afterwards the Powerbook froze.
I have tried to reinstall Tiger - then Panther from my original system disks - The hardware test says all is fine. The drive shows to install - but can't find a drive following installation.
    Any ideas?

RAM failure can lead to kernel panics, unexpected quits, more spinning beachballs than you would expect for specific kinds of processes, and it can potentially cause problems with software installation. Note, if a hardware test reveals bad RAM you can believe it. You can't though believe a hardware test when it says the RAM is healthy, as bad bits can't all be tested in the known age of the universe.

  • System crash just got a memory upgrade and installed tiger.

When I was runnig panther and connected to net and at random times I get a message that read " Your computer needs be reset" . The message appears in several different langauges. When I was using Panther i did two clean installs of panther i still got the fore mentioned message. I thought installing tiger would take care of the problem but it didn't. i get the same message and a system crash. Is my mini shot?

Grizzo, what you're suffering from is known as a 'Kernel Panic'. It's not all that common, but it's not unheard of either. Kernel panics can be caused by a wide variety of things - often by memory problems (hence the previous poster asking whether your memory upgrade was done before or after you first started getting these) but can also be caused by other hardware issues, or even by software.
One thing that a kernel panic doesn't mean is that your mini is faulty. It MIGHT be, but it's also possible they're being caused by something you have installed on your mini, or a device connected to it.
First thing to try is to disconnect all external devices other than keyboard, mouse and screen and see if the mini panics then. If it doesn't, the problem is in something you had connected to it before. If it does, then it's in the mini (though some displays have been known to cause kernel panics too!).
You might find the page at http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html an interesting place to start.

  • How to properly clean install: erase, partition hard drive, and install tiger then SL

    Hello,
I am a noob at this, so if responders would be kind enough to be detailed / specific with any instructions it would be most helpful! I own a dinosaur apparently (even though I don't think so): the white (not unibody) Intel macbook2,1 (late 2006) 1.83 GHz with currently 1GB of RAM, but I have 2x2GB RAM sitting next to me ready for install. However, first I would like to do a clean uninstall of my computer (running OS X 10.6.8 SL). I also would like to properly partition my hard drive while I'm at it.
About 6 months ago I had serious crashing issues, along with kernel panics, hangs, applications randomly appearing & disappearing, system settings and options doing the same, fans running high (probably due to the low RAM available), and basically overall screwiness. So, after trying pretty much every option I could find on this community...and many others... (e.g. clean cache, clean old logs, already did a clean uninstall and install of SL, and much much more) I have reached my wits end. I would say that to date I've wasted a good solid 2 months with this.
The clean install worked for MAYBE a month or so, but then it started acting up again with the fans (even without high pages in/out, CPU or memory usage) and excessive heat, along with the apps freezing and quitting (mind you it would be only two things open such as 1 word document and then firefox-- with flash disabeled). SOOOOOO long story short, I have purchased new RAM and I would like to try this once again, but to ensure I don't screw it up this time I would like some directions as to how to do the uninstall, partition, then reinstall. (currently to date I ensured all updates are completed---even though they are no longer released for SL, and I just did a full backup).
Also, I need to first install Tiger (my original OS) as when I went to do a hardware test the other day this was not an option (and upon further research it is due to me not using Tiger as a first install and then using my mac box set for SL). I didn't use my original OS first because....one issue encountered when I had tried to install Tiger was that my Disc 2 (the applications one) took around 1.5 hrs to complete, but when I reached the last step of glory where I expected it to say COMPLETE it instead said that there was some sort of issue with the disc..........of course).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1: If near a Apple Store or Authorized Repair, take it to then for a free evaluation, it might have other hardware problems now that it would be a waste of effort even continuing.
2: The RAM needs to be
    Maximum Memory
3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Basically what this means is you can put in a 2GB module and a 1GB module for 3GB total.
I wouldn't proceed with installing RAM just yet, not until you get a stable OS X version on the machine, you might have a hard drive needing to be replaced as well which you can do while inserting new RAM.
3: This User Tip can assist in installing 10.6 Snow Leopard, partition format etc.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Software Update fully immediately after setup.
There is no need to install Tiger, he 10.6 disk contains the full 10.6 version, you can either install the iLife from Tiger disks or use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract them and place on your new install, then Software update to get them current.
4: If not successful then the drive also likely needs to be replaced, if so choose a 7,200 RPM SATA I  w/1.5Gb/s connection.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
    Repeat #3
If your getting beeping noises or "you need to restart" issues, it's likely one or more of the RAM modules is bad. Have it exchanged or swapped.
I advise good quality RAM the first time, if you buy cheap stuff it's just going back.
Don't go any further than 10.6.8 with that old machine, the performance will be terrible.

  • After Clean Instal Tiger, upgrading to 10.4.7. many errors appeared

I wiped my boot drive, installed tiger, upgraded combo 10.4.7. Created anount account user. Things were spiffy for a moment until I mounted my firewire drives and some dmg file. BLAM! CRASH! MAYDAY MAYDAY! RUN FOR COVER into the apple forum! I've search forums for several problems and was unable to find solution but did on my own.
    Errors:
Media ejectables: DMG, firewire drives, cd, dvd would not appear (but would on other users) I tried permission fix, disconnecting, whatever.
Internal audio wasn't working. Volume control was dissabled, and volume icon dissappeared from menubar after clicking it.
Worse of all: My icons on my sidebar were missing, desktop icons were randomly missing. I did comand J on finder and select show icon and show preview. That worked until log out, log in. Icons were switched around to the wrong ones, I thought I was on mars.
What else, well didn't get around much since I tried to deal with one problem at a time - it became overwhelming.
Before erasing the drive and reinstalling for another try, I decided to trash all my contents in my prefs folder in my home/personal directory (didn't empty trash). Logged out and back in. I'm back in business!
Those of you may want to try that and may have to re-adjust all your settings, serials, etc. Or you could drag some prefs back to folder to to find culprit or just the ones you really need. When happy with everything... Take out the garbage!
Hope it works for you as well.

It's explained as is. Delete some preference files.
