Just installedLeopard-Helv&Neue conflict!

I just installed Leopard and now at startup i get messages that Helvetica and Hevetica Neue 3 conflict!-I use fontbook only and when i try to disable the families for these fonts it says that theyre being used by the system and wont turn off! Whats going on! How do I fix this?! I need a simple answer please, ive seen some VERY long threads on this that dont give a definitive solution!

If you've already checked for other possible conflicting duplicates as Kappy pointed out, then the only way for you to activate your necessary PostScript versions is to get Apple's .dfont versions out of the way. They only way to do that is to manually remove the two Apple supplied Helvetica fonts from two locations in the the System folder. Instructions are in section 4 of my article, Font Management in OS X.

  • Helvetica Neue quit working when I updated to CS5.5

I just purchased CS5.5 and updgraded from CS3. When I open InDesign 5.5 to get working, none of my Helvetica Neue font family works. It defaults to Times and every file I have ever created the text all defaults. Helvetica Neue is our corporate font that I use 99.9% of the day. I purchased Font Doctor, becuase I just assumed there were too many versions of the same font running around, did a system check and clean up a BUNCH of stuff. Still doesn't work. I reset the preferences for InDesign 5.5 and still no change. I pulled the font off one of our other computers and reinstalled it and still doesn't work. In FontBook it has warnings that there are multiply copies but disabling the copies doesn't help. Next step, I opened the old InDesign 3 and lo and behold, there are all my fonts and they WORK!
So now I have checked all my programs:
    InDesign CS3: Helvetica Neue works
    InDesign CS5.5: Doesn't work
    Illustrator CS3: Works
    Illustrator CS5.1: Works
    Photoshop CS3: Works
    Photoshop CS5.1: Doesn't work
I have no clue what is going on, hopefully someone has an idea and can help me.
Think I just might uninstall 5.5 and try it again.
I'm freaking out and can't do my job.
    Thanks
    -T
My computer is a Mac 10.6.8.

It may have been installed in InDesign's program font folder.
You hopefully kept a prvious version of InDesign installed.
Open CS4, type some Helv Neue, select
    Type > Find Font
From that dialog, highlight Helv N, choose More Info
It will show the path to where the font is installed.
Install to the OS Fonts folder or ID CS5.5's program fonts folder

  • System fonts conflict

Hi there, I own an AD agency with a few of these leopards running... I had 2 major issues:
    1. adobe virtual printer pausing and unable to distill a PDF file out of word.
    2. a terrible font conflict due to the overlapping presence of the Helvetica Neue in the system folder and in Suitcase Fusion where the "System Font ovverride" option is checked...
Spent the whole day struggling would be great to share with someone.

I share your pain, but haven't found a solution.
I have a design firm. I’ve installed Leopard on my Macbook Pro 17 without incident, as a pretrial before installing it on my working studio machines.
It appears that Leopard now includes Helvetica Neue and Helvetica (not so Neue) in the primary system fonts folder. The addition of Helv Neue to this folder is new with Leopard.
These fonts are now triggering eleven conflict message windows (one for each flavor of font) when Font Agent Pro is used to fire up the Adobe versions of these fonts (upon which I rely heavily in my design business). These warnings have to be closed one by one. Once my Adobe fonts are loaded, there are all kinds of anomalies in the Apple apps that use these fonts, including Safari, Mail many widgets, iCal and so on.
Any attempt to remove these fonts from the system folder results in their automatically being replaced. It’s as though the computer is telling me that “resistance is futile”.
We have hundreds of documents where Helvetica Neue or Helvetica are part of the design. Leopard will be a non starter in the design shop if we can’t beat this. I thought Apple knew they had a strong presence in the design industry. This is bone-headed planning on their part!

  • IP Conflicts between Ethernet-connected Mac and wireless devices

I have three wireless devices accessing the internet via my Airport Express connected to an XRouter Pro distributing internet services from my cable modem. I also have a Mac Pro tower connected to the XRouter via Ethernet. Until I installed Snow Leopard, this set-up worked seamlessly with DHCP. Now, when I power on my Mac Pro, it tells me another device is using its IP address, rather than just picking up a new one dynamically. Once the Mac Pro has its address (which generally means turning off whatever device is using the Mac Pro's desired address), it works fine, but until then, it wreaks havoc with all the other connections. Any idea as to how I can keep this from recurring? I don't want to have to leave my Mac Pro running all the time just to avoid IP conflicts.

Is the "XRouter" box supplying IP addresses via DHCP? Is the AirPort Express in "bridge mode" or is it also supplying DHCP services? In general, it's not a good idea to have two DHCP servers running on the same subnet.
I'd guess that your Mac Pro actually is "picking up a new [IP address] dynamically," it's just that some other device happens to be using it already.

  • Calendar widget

I'm sure someone has posted about this before... I've seen this happen on a number of different Macs (including an G4 eMac, Power Mac G5, Power Mac G4, my Macbook Pro, and Mac Pro, running anything between 10.4.1 to 10.4.10).
The large number indicating the current date always seems to be moved up... Perhaps it's a font issue, or just a common bug that hasn't been fixed yet.
    Here's a screenshot: http://extracaffeine.com/dashboard-calendar.png
    Any insight?
    MacBook Pro v2.2   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD

I've had this same problem for ages and it really irritates me.
My Postscript Helvetica Neue conflicts with OSX's Helvetica. I can't use the calendar or weather widgets because the baseline for those fonts are different. If the PS version of Helvetica Neue is activated, the type for those widgets moves all over the place. Argh.
I've heard that the Opentype version of Helvetica Neue fixes this problem, but I cannot afford the Opentype version of Helvetica Neue as it's over $700.
You can't use OSX's version of Helvetica for designing because it's Truetype. Truetype is not meant for professional printing.
I've tried manually changing font ID numbers, using different versions of PS Helvetica Neue, nothing works.
I love Apple, but this is inexcusable for a company whose primary customers are creatives.
    So frustrating.

  • Typsetting in Czech!

Hi, I'm trying to copy and paste a translated word document in Czech into my design template in CS5.  However it's not bringing across all the accents.  I then change the font to the Corporate font I have to use (Helvetica Neue Regular) and it replaces some of the accents with a square box.  However if I select Arial the translation is perfect?  Any ideas how I can continue to use the Corporate font and for it to fully translate?

This is a little bit misleading...
The text from Word contains the correct UniCode calls for the accented characters, but the fonts you are attempting to use do not have the right character set.
The font you're trying to use - Helvetica Neue - doesn't have all of the right characters.
To make the accents appear automatically, you must use fonts in InDesign that are UniCode compliant, such as an OpenType Pro font.
So far as I know, all of the Adobe OpenType fonts with "Pro" in the name have the full complement of glyphs necessary to typeset Czech.
PostScript and TrueType fonts do not always have the full UniCode compliant character sets so the accented characters are replaced by unwanted characters.
This is true... but sometimes, OpenType fonts (like, for example, the OT fonts from Adobe labeled "Standard") don't have all of the glyphs necessary for Czech, and sometimes TrueType fonts do have all of 'em.
It is most likely that the Helvetica Neue Regular you are attempting to use is not UniCode compliant.
It's most likely the case that you are using a Unicode-compliant version of Helvetica Neue - maybe the .dfont from OS 10.4 is encoded in MacRoman, but I can't say for sure - but just because a font has Unicode encoding doesn't necessarily mean that it has all the glyphs you need. There are all kinds of Unicode-compliant fonts out there that don't have Czech glyphs. Likewise, there are fonts out there that have all of the necessary Czech glyphs that aren't Unicode, such as old MacOS fonts in MacCE (Central European) encoding.
So, Macdoctor, your basic message is correct ("use a font that has all the right glyphs in the right encoding") but your explanation of the details is a bit off.
Claire, a quick Google search tells me that there is a version of Helvetica Neue that includes Central European support. If you must use Helve Neue, then you'll have to buy a license for the version that supports the language you're typesetting. If you are working with a small amount of text, there are a number of ways to fake it (like, for example, using combining accents, or manually kerning accents into place) but if you're working on a long document then probably you'd be best served by just buying the font that has the glyphs you need.

  • WOES: iSync, Palm Pilot, iCal, Missing Sync, Palm Desktop, Ericsson Phone

Here's my situation, I've been a long time Palm user, and fairly recently (within a year) a new Mac user. I've always used the Palm Desktop on my PC in the past. I've had a Palm Vx for years, and fairly recently (within a year) I bought a Palm Zire 72 and a Sony Ericsson S170a cell phone. I also have an iPod Photo.
I really would like to sync up my address book, calendars, memos, maybe even photos, with all my devices. I tried using iSync, but nothing seam to work right, so I tried a million things, now everything is messed up.
For right now, I'm just trying to get my Palm Pilot, the Mac, and the Phone to have all the same calendar events (w the correect times, alarms, colors, and groups).
I'm really frustrated with trying to get the mac's iCal, the palm pilot, the phone to all have the same calendar info. I really like iCal, and the mac address book, and how well it works with the mail app. As well as subscribing to shared iCals. Especially the holiday ones! I use to have to enter all that info by hand, and have them "other" repeater. The Palm Desktop software's calendar and address book is pretty clunky compared to the Mac apps, or even the Palm Desktop for the PC. But everything is messed up now. I even tried the "missing sync" software and it messed it up even worse.
Several of my cal events are now GONE from iCal, my Palm Pilot, and my Phone! Many of them have duplicates, some have wrong times. Some have right groups, some don't. The ones that do have right groups, don't have any colors applied to them. If I create certain calendars on the mac and sync with the palm, the groups do not come over. If I create them on the Palm, the groups don't come over on the mac. Getting the colors/groups to match, and all 3 items to sync all at once is a nightmare as well. There were a million conflicts, and chose the correct ones, but some of them would NOT let me pick the one I wanted, it would just keep on saying "conflict".
What would AT LEAST get me back to the original info on the Palm and the Mac would be to restore from my Palm Desktop software, but I can't get to that because it looks like the missing sync software has messed the conduit/hot sync manager up. I can no longer get to my Palm Desktop condiut settings. I'd re-install the palm software to get it back, but I will probably loose all the data stored in Palm Desktop. This is the ONLY place that has the correct info right now. I'm varry warry about loosing that information. I use to have the PC copy, and the Palm Copy, and it was all right. The Palm Desktop has an import/export feature, but it doesn't seam to carry all the info (like notes attatched to cal events).
Also, has anyone tried to RESTORE a Palm Pilot not using the Palm Desktop software? When I had to reset my Palm, I tried using iSync or even missing sync to get all my apps, settings, calendars, address books, everything, but it never put the info back on the Palm. This info was always restored with Palm Desktop.
And let's just say I DO get back all my calendar items back into the Palm, and the Palm Desktop software up and running correctly. What is the proper way to do what I was trying to do in the begining? Which was "just have my Palm Pilot, the Mac, and the Phone to have all the same calendar events (w the right times, alarms, colors, and groups)." I don't seam to have too many problems with contacts. Except work/home fields seam to swap all the time.
    What I'm running:
    G4 PowerMac w/ Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.3)
Palm Pilot Zire 72s (Palm Software v5.2.8)
    Missing Sync (v5.0.3)
    Palm Desktop Mac (v4.2.1)
    Sony Ericsson S170a Cell Phone
    iPod Photo 60GB
G4 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Palm Pilot Zire 72s (Palm Software v5.2.8), Missing Sync (v5.0.3), Palm Desktop Mac (v4.2.1), Sony

Where to start? Maybe with some background about the synchronization process.
What Apple hasn't explained outside of the developer community is that you are not actually synchronizing applications [like iCal or the Address Book] or servers [like .Mac] or devices [like your mobile handset or a Palm organizer] when you initiate a synchronization. What you are really doing is triggering an interaction with one or more of these and the SyncServices engine, which maintains what is termed the 'truth database'—or simply, the 'truth'—to which is pushed, or from which is pulled, the current state of data maintained in fields and records for one or more specific data types. Because of the way this process works, it is not necessary to have all synchronized devices available or attached when a synchronization event occurs.
You can synchronize your SONY Ericsson S710a, a process which exchanges the most current data maintained in the truth with it, and hours later, plug in your iPod, an action which will trigger iTunes to pull the latest data from the truth and write it to the iPod, updating your contact and calendaring records. The same is true for other applications, servers and devices.
While it all seems clumsy and confusing, it is actually a huge step forward in making synchronization nearly automatic, almost transparent, and virtually mistake proof. It's clear that there is some distance to go before those objectives are achieved, but SyncServices is actually a huge improvement over the prior synchronization technology in iSync 1.5 and earlier.
That said, there are bugs in SyncServices, and in the applications written by several developers to take advantage of it, along with issues in at least iCal, and probably the Address Book, that complicate what you are trying to achieve. It's possible to do, and once working, should work nearly flawlessly. But, it takes some planning to get there.
First, a word about backing up your data. It's a good idea to periodically back up contact and calendaring records using the facilities built into iCal and the Address Book which appear in the File menu of each application. These options make easily restorable local snapshots of your data. Should something go terribly wrong with a synchronization event, you can immediately restore your iCal or Address Book data from these files. In addition, it's a good idea to have a more comprehensive backup plan in place, using Backup and .Mac, Backup and rewritable media, and so on.
To synchronize photos, music and other media files, you'll need to use the Missing Sync for Palm OS. iSync just does not support anything beyond contact, calendaring and task data. To begin the process, you should simplify your device pool, initially concentrating only on getting a complete, accurate set of contact, event and task records pushed to the truth from the Address Book and iCal, and onto your Palm.
You will have to take an inventory of where the best records reside, and insure that you get them into iCal and the Address Book before attempting to synchronize your Palm, because to do it properly, initially, you will have to overwrite the data on your Palm, replacing it with records from iCal and the Address Book. If you're going to edit them by making additions, changes and deletions, perform all of those in iCal and the Address Book until you have synchronized your Palm device or devices with them. Backup before performing the initial synchronization, and be sure to overwrite each Palm device the first time.
If you want a historic snapshot of the data on either Palm device before doing this, first follow the instructions provided by Mark/Space to use the standard Palm conduits instead of Mark/Space Contacts, Events and Tasks, and be sure to set each Palm conduit to Palm overwrites handheld in order to transfer the data from your Palm Vx and Zire 72 to the Palm Desktop. Once there, those records can be exported as vCard and vCal files, and easily imported into the Address Book and iCal if you wish to do that. Edit them as you see fit, once they have been transfered. If you elect to do that, you must thereafter turn off these Palm conduits and reconfigure the Missing Sync to use the Mark/Space conduits, again choosing to have your computer replace the contents on each Palm device on the first synchronization.
Once you've achieved a 'balance' with the records in iCal, the Address Book and your handheld organizers, you can reset the records on your mobile handset. iSync alone performs this function, and later synchronization events with your SONY Ericsson S710a will always be manually triggered, and performed using iSync, not the Missing Sync. Reset once, and subsequently synchronize.
Anything else you want to add to the mix—.Mac Sync, for example—you can then add, initially performing a reset of your .Mac data, then subsequently synchronizing.
Synchronization of your iPod is handled by iTunes and only pulls data from the truth, so it need not be reset, as it cannot write changes to the truth which would adversely affect your other devices.

  • Can't edit text in PDF

    Hi,
Using Acrobat Pro 8.1.7 intel mac plenty of ram. I've got a PDF from a client that comes with areas that I can supposedly change. However I get this message:
All or part of the selection has no available system font. You can not add or delete text using the current selected font.
The font is Helv Neue Roman TT. I have every Helv Neue but that one. If I buy it can I edit it?
Would Acrobat 9 do it easier?
    Thanks

You've ran in to one of the problems with editing PDF's. They really aren't intended for that type of editing.
You would need the "exact" font on your system and even then, it may not work.
If the creator of the file used say and Open Type Font (works on Windows and Mac) and you had the same one, that would be your best bet.

  • Font substitution after upgrade from 46c to ERP2005

In 4.6C systems in SAPSCRIPT I can chose HELVE font in various sizes from a drop down list. In ERP2005 systems I can only choose a font family HELVE. I can then type size 9pt. In print preview everything is okay however, when printing to a  printer this font goes to an outline style font due to some font substitution going on behind the scenes. Why is this different to 4.6C systems and can we do something about it?
Just tried HELVE 8pt and that works. I have no idea why 9pt doesn't. This is not a printer driver issue, we have tried this on various different printers with same end result. Any idea's??

    Hi Chris,
As a work around, you may try re-adding/updating the font using SE73.

  • Weird Problem With Information For Songs

When I look at one of my songs in iTunes, its normal. It shows the name of the song, and the name of the artist. but when i play that song on iTunes, some other information shows such as album and genre. was that information there the whole time? was it not showing it for some reason? or is it adding old info when i play the song?
note that this only happens to some songs.
    plz help me!

Did you mean Repair Disk? That can only be done when booted from the install disk. Repair Permissions should always be done when booted from the startup disk.
And my first guess as to the location of the problem would be Word's preference file. When you reinstall the program it is extremely likely that the old preference file is still in place. I'm using Word 2004 in 10.5.7 without a problem. Indeed, I was running it last night, and used the Open function. The following files were changed:
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist
So go to your home folder, open the /Library folder and then the Preferences folder. Move the Microsoft folder onto the Desktop, and do the same with the com.micosoft.Word.plist file. Start Word and see how it goes. If there is no improvement you can put the original folder and plist file back. If it does work correctly you may want to rescue you custom dictionary from the folder and put it back.
Alternatively, if you have a test user you could try logging into that account and try Word there. If you don't have a test user create one in System Preferences/Accounts. Leave it pretty much as Apple creates it, and keep it. It doesn't take much space, and is VERY handy for occasions like this to see if something is truly broken, or it is just some sort of conflict or corruption in your regular account.

  • Using time capsule with two macs

    Hi
I am using a MBP and an iMac. Is it possible to set up TC to save work from the two macs?

Ah, that's good to know, i was thinking that it may only be used for one dedicated mac.  Ok, so at the moment I have my MBP linking with TC wirelessly. I want to do the same for my iMac, do i just set it up the same way? If so does TC then just save both without conflict, or does one have to partition TC?

  • IPhoto broken - Empty window when I open the application - Help needed

    Hi Guys,
Since my upgrade to Snow Leopard my iPhoto 09 has been completely broken. What I get when I start it up is an empty window. No pictures on the right pane and no menus on the left pane. I read many threads about iPhoto issues, and so I have tried to rebuild the library, reinstall iPhoto from the disk I got with my mac. Still the same problem: On startup, iPhoto opens with a completely blank window. All I have are the three buttons at the bottom left side of the window (+, info and enlarge). Only if I click "+" to add a new album the menus on the left pane (events, photos...) appear. A few clicks on these menus and iPhoto crashes. All this, done with a new, clean library. I moved the old one, and keep it for the day I'll get iPhoto to work again. Hope you guys can help. This is painfully frustrating.

    Thanks for help Terrence
I am using Suitcase Fusion 2 and just activitating Helvetica Neue in Suitcase seemed to fix this problem I have had for several months.
I highly recommend doing the activation in Suitcase instead of just droping it into the System Fonts folder. This will allow for Suitcase to activate or deactivate the font. If you put the font into one of your folders, Suitcase can not deactivate, which might be necessary if your job uses a different version of Helvetica Neue.

  • Fontconfig-2.4.2 package incompatibility w/Solaris 10 5/08 x86

FYI, I found that after installing this package via pkgadd from http://www.sunfreeware.com/indexintel10.html the startup of the window manager would hang indefinitely when attempting a desktop login.
A perusal of pkginfo also shows that there is already a fontconfig package bundled with the OS:
    system SUNWfontconfig Fontconfig library
    system SUNWfontconfig-docs Fontconfig library documentation
system SUNWfontconfig-root Fontconfig library configuration files
I installed the freeware package because another package I wanted to install (gd) was dependent on it.
Once I deinstalled the freeware package, the desktop login worked, so it looks like installation of the freeware package should be avoided.
To note, I'm running Solaris 10 5/08 x86 on an IBM ThinkPad T60, although I don't believe this issue is hardware specific.

FYI, I just noticed the same conflict on SPARC boxes too. A simple "pkgrm SMCfontc" removes the package and solves the problem.

  • Freezing while opening Indesign CS5.5 files

I'm having difficulty opening CS5.5 files. I designed them in CS3. Then I got CS5.5 and opened them in that and saved them.
Every time I try to reopen them they freeze up. More specifically, if I double click a CS5.5 Indesign file, it freezes up EVERY time.
If a drag it to the Indesign CS5.5 icon in my dock, it freezes up consistently every other time--asking me if I want to postpone the recovery.
My fonts libraries and caches are clean. I've run font nuke. I've installed Suitease Fusion 3.
I was thinking that this might have to do with Helvetica Neue conflicts. My document utilizes this font.
I've tured off open fonts automatically in fontbook and Suitcase Fusion 3.
    Any ideas?

As long as there's a problem in the recovery folder you will continue to have a problem on startup. Move the contents of the Recovery folder to a new location, like the desktop, and launch ID, then try to open the files using File > Open...
Other users report problems from time to time with CS3 and CS4 files opened in CS5 (and presumably 5.5), some of which do not show up until major editing has been completed. I recommend exporting the documents from CS3 to .inx and open the .inx in CS5.5.
