Just lost my main drive;  any thoughts?

Fortunately Retrospect backs it up 3 times a day, so I didn't lose much. Diskwarrior seems unable to rescue it, although I did get all the way to "replacing directory with new optimized one", but then hung about 90% of the way through that. I think I let this drive (external) get too hot, and the mechanism has taken a dump. My questions are: does anyone have any other thoughts on rescuing it? I had unbelievable good luck once using this online data-rescue thing on a PC drive, but it cost about $200 to recover 100 gig, and since this is backed up, I don't need to go that way. And my other question is: this drive failed because it hung while I was copying something to it (the icon for the thing I was copying just got stuck on the drive icon and I got the beach-ball for 1/2 hour). I couldn't think of anything to do but re-boot; is there a better way to handle this that stands less chance of corrupting the directory on the destination drive?
VIVE le RETROSPECT! Et le RETROSPECT EXPRESS!

Retrospect is a little backup program that can schedule different sorts of backups; I back up my work drive 3 times a day (lunch, dinner, 2 a.m.), my audio drives, sample drives and main boot drive once a day at 5 a.m.. Some people use a mirrored RAID; I worry that the kind of thing that happened yesterday would haved screwed both drives (main and backup) at the same time, so I feel safer with Retrospect (I actually use Retrospect Express) even though I may one day lose a 3rd of a day's work, I feel less exposed to losing EVERYTHING. Apple has a thing called "backup" that I'm going to look into since my MacBook Pro won't run Retrospect, I don't think. And yes, that's me from the Breckers and Gino, thanks for the comment...

  • Encore keeps freezing when I use dynamic link from premiere.  Any thoughts?

I just got done editing my sequence in Premiere Pro CS6.  I've added my chapter markers and sent to Encore via Dynamic Link.  Once I choose my project name and location it begins the import.  At 50% it freezes.  I've tried it on multiple machines and hard drives.  I've done this a million times before and have now just run into issues.  Any thoughts?
I'm working on a 2010 Mac Pro and a 2013 Macbook Pro (non retina)

You'll have a much better chance asking your question in the Encore forum. There are not many Encore users who  venture here. This forum is for general Creative Suite questions.

  • After activating my iPhone 4s, my phone number shows up as "n/a" and my old iPhone is still working. Any thoughts?

After syncing my new iPhone 4s, my old iPhone is still working and the new one says No Service. When I connect to iTunes, it says my Phone Number is "n/a" and my old iPhone is still working.
When activating initially through AT&T, I had no problems, but I've just never gotten service. Any thoughts? Could this all just be due to the servers being overloaded today?

After waiting on hold for a long time, I talked with AT&T to determine that the ICCID and IMEI numbers didn't get changed in their system.  (I'm guessing lost in transfer due to the load on the system?).  They took down the info, disconnected the call (I had to call from the 3Gs - no landline), and then called me back on my 4s.  Problem solved.
Hold times suck right now, but at least 611 calls don't cost you minutes and speaker phone is your friend

  • Why do I keep losing my GarageBand music that is saved on my icloud account one at a time? I have 4 gigs not used and just lost another.

I save all my garage band songs to the cloud. They are about 1.5 gigs worth of a 5 gig free account. If I don't access them for a few weeks I find maybe one will be missing. This has happened 2 times in the past 6 months. Again it's not an issue where I gust ran out of storage ether locally or on my icloud, they just seem to disappear. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. It has happened twice in the last week. Nobody here has actually given a solution to the problem.
    Here are the particulars:
    -iPhone 4S
    -iOS version 7.0.4
-Seems to only happen when I am home and the iPhone is synching with WiFi.
-The problem begins with a dialog window on the phone that requests that I re-enter my iCloud credentials.
-Within a few minutes/hours, all of the iCloud information is gone (contacts, calendars)
-Email seems to still work for the iCloud and all other email accounts (gmail, hotmail, etc.)
-The only way to get back the information is to re-boot the phone.
-Prior to the dialog window, nothing out of the ordinary has taken place.
-I am a little OCD, so I permanently close all running programs except for Mail, Messages, and Phone.
-Programs running prior to the problem could be many but typically I use Waze while driving home, and I would have closed it after I pull in to the garage. (My iPhone gets WiFi in the garage)
-The biggest drag is that when the contacts get cleared, any personal ringtones, or other identifiers get permanently cleared and have to be reassigned. That is the most annoying part.
What else does anyone need to know? It seems to be a thing, so when (and I'm sure it will repeat) it happens again I will throroughly check all suggestions.
I know how to fix it. I would like to know how to prevent it from ever happening again.

My hard drive desktop suddenly will no longer hold or maintain the icons in place when I shut down and restart.  The icons all change positions, alphabetically.  Just started happening.  I prefer the icons to a list format.  Concerned this might be a symptom of a larger problem.  Any thoughts?

It's normal for the icons at the top level of the startup disk to revert to the same arrangement every time the Finder is relaunched. If it's important to you to arrange those icons in a persistent way, proceed as follows.
    Back up all data.
Open the Info window on the startup disk (labeled "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it another name.) Click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, click the plus-sign button to add an entry to the access list. Give yourself "Read and Write" access. This will be a temporary change. Leave the dialog open.
Open the Finder window and arrange the icons as you wish, then close the window.
In the Info dialog, use the minus-sign button to delete the entry you just added to the access list. Don't change anything else. When you're done, it should be the same as when you started. Close the Info dialog.

  • I reloaded my old iWorks 08 to my iMac's new hard drive. With a new Pages document, I can't see the cursor. You can type in text but it is in white only. Any thoughts?

Hi. I lost my iMac's hard drive and had a new one installed. I reloaded my old iWorks 08 software and then transferred my Pages documents from a portable HD to the iMac. The files open but the original text in them (they are journals) are in white against the white background. Plus I can't see any sign of the cursor. I can hi-lite the text and change its colour but never to black. Plus the photos I inserted along side the text are barely visible, as if they had been badly faded.
Any thoughts on this? Many thanks.
    Richard

    Richard,
You must run Software Update and bring your old iWorks 08 to the latest release for compatibility with the current OS.

  • When attempting to format my new internal Hitachi 500 GB hard drive I get an I/o error and the drive is reading as a 3.4 TB drive in disk utility.  Any thoughts?

I have a 2007 MacBook. 2 years ago I upgrade the HD to a 500 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi. That drive just failed so I purchased another from the same store. When attempting to reload the OS the drive was not showing up as an option when asked to select a destination drive for the OS. I then exited the install and opened disk utility. Disk utility lists the capacity of the drive as 3.4 TB and when attempting to partition the drive it gives an input/output error. So I tried the hard drive from my other MacBook which already has an OS on it and it works fine. I surmised that the drive was faulty and had the store exchange it for another of a different model, but same specs. Second drive is doing the exact same thing. I figured there must be something wrong internally with the logic board so I tried using my other MacBook to load the OS and it's giving me the same exact error. Now I'm wondering what the deal is. When using the original 160 GB HD that came in the machine it works fine but the brand new one doesn't work. Any thoughts?

  • Fubar with my external hard drive and not all Match items will play in iTunes on my Air but will on Apple TV. Any thoughts?

My entire library is on iTunes Match however after a recent fubar with my external hard drive, whilst I can play all my music through Apple TV I can't access it all on my Air. This was the original device used to download. Any thoughts?
There doesn't seem to be a specific period in my purchasing/downloading that this applies to. For instance, Adele 21 album downloaded at the time isn't playing but Skyfall the single is. Emeli Sande new album downloaded when it came out delivers this message: The song “Heaven” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same with Bellowhead which was a physical CD uploaded.
I'm not very technically minded so if anyone can help this poor, frustrated individual I would be very grateful.

When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC?

I just updated my software and spotlights appeared evenly across the bottom of the screen.  I left the computer for a couple of hours and when I returned they were gone.  Any thoughts?

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, restore from backup.

  • Any Thoughts on New iMac Fusion Drive for Editing Video

I was wondering if there were any thoughts about the new iMac for editing 720/1080 HD video from say an iPhone 5 or Canon Power Shot camera. The drive speed is now only 5400 RPM in the 21.5" model. I was curious if the the combo SSD/5400 RPM HDD had the same editing power as as a 7200 RPM drive.

Thanks, I've read it, well I should say I've tried to read it. Somewhat over my head, but not totally. I'm just curious if some of the video editing tasks would be done on the HDD or faster SSD drive. I'll have to go back to the article and see if there is any mention of that type of task.
I'm a little disappointed that you need to move up to the 27" iMac to get a 7200 RPM Fusion Drive. Do not need a 27" desktop.

  • Boot Rom/Hard Drive Problem on Pismo. Any thoughts? CPU?

Hello. Here are the details of my problem, and the chronology of events leading up to it. Any thoughts or information that might lead to a solution would be appreciated.
G3/500 Pismo running 10.4.8 on a recently installed (used) 80GB hard drive. Everything working fine, but weak signal on Airport network (MDD (FW) 2x1.25ghz w/Airport Extreme Card, dialup)
Removed Airport card, installed PCMCIA Belkin F5D7011 125 plus. Worked fine, signal still not great. OS kept creating new ports every time Internet Connect was opened. Weird. I decided to restart to see if that would clear up the problem. Also upgraded Airport software to latest (extreme) version. Later wondered if this might have been a bad idea since the Pismo wasn't originally designed to support 802.11(g) cards, but...
Restarted-- or tried to. Got four beeps and 1 long, 3 short flashes on the sleep LED. Reset and repeated this several times. Switched hard drives experimentally. No more beeps, but hard drive spun up.
Eventually nothing even after reset-- no beeps, no spin-up.
Apple says four beeps is a boot-rom problem. A diagram of the logic board shows the boot rom on the CPU board. (Important note: it has been dry here of late, and I changed the Airport card. Static electricity problem? I didn't notice a discharge but...)
I've ordered a G3/400 CPU from eBay to see if that is the problem. I figure I can resell it if it is not the culprit.
Do you have any thoughts on what else it might be? I'll report back here on whether the CPU replacement fixes the problem. Similar symptoms on a Lombard, minus the four beeps, were corrected by replacing the CPU.
Anybody have a G3/500, G4/550, or G3/900 CPU for sale?
Again, any responses to my inquiry would be sincerely appreciated.
    From Northern California,
    reidjam7

    James,
Your Pismo can run an "extreme" 802.11g wifi PC card in the PCMCIA/CardBus slot with no problem; however, you are limited to the original AirPort card under the keyboard...no extreme.
A few procedures you might try in your diagnosis:
    1. Remove all peripherals, including PC cards and the optical drive.
    2. Lift off the microprocessor card. Apple recommends you remove the heat sink and CPU card as one unit so as not to disturb the thermal transfer pad between the heat sink and CPU; be very careful as you can mistakenly pop the heat sink off including the plastic bracket around the CPU. If you have removed the heat sink in the past, then this would be the safest procedure.
    3. Remove/reseat the lower memory module, then firmly seat the microprocessor card; push down very hard on the right side of the card next to the HD and closest to the palm rest where the multi-pin connector resides on the underside. Press down very hard...you may even hear a snap as it fully seats. At this stage you can just plug in the power adapter and see if it will start. I suggest this procedure only because another user stated he solved his bootROM failure which was apparently due to a poor or oxidized connection. There is a very low probability this will be the solution.
    4. If no boot, disconnect the HD ribbon cable from the logic board, then try starting; a working powerbook in this configuration should produce the gray screen with a flashing '?'.
    5. If still no boot, disconnect the internal rechargeable backup batteries (the red/black/white pigtail from the two round batteries that plugs into the logic board), then try starting. A dead/internally shorted backup battery can prevent startup.
    6. Lastly, disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable, then try starting.

  • I have a 2012 Mini with a fusion drive that won't boot from a usb cloned drive. It came with 10.8.2 pre installed. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Any thoughts?

I have a 2012 Mini with a fusion drive that won't boot from a usb cloned drive. It came with 10.8.2 pre installed. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Any thoughts?

When I tried using a recently downloaded (from the App store) version of MtLion 10.8.2 (12C60) I could NOT get the new MacMini to install or boot from a USB I had previously made. I was however able to use the Recovery Mode of the MacMini to create a bootable SSD which I had installed. The problem arose when I went back into Recovery DU as it saw the seperate drives (SSD & HD) as a broken Fusion Drive. Interestingly DU from the boot volume had NO issues and reported NO faults. It was the Recovery DU that identified the faulty Fusion Drive configuration. At this point I am definately out of my depth but my speculation is that the Recovery Volume is being used in some fashion to form the method or pattern that DU assigns files to the drives, System Report sees the drives as seperate volumes with all their individual characteristics.
Disk Utility did not make a bootable USB, I don't have or use CCC or Super Duper.
Here is the longer version I've been compiling:
Having bought a late 2012 Mac Mini(6,2) i7 2.66GHZ with the standard 1TB 5400 HD and 4GB of RAM (base model) I immediately decided to install a Mercury Elite 6g 240GB SSD and up the RAM to 16GB. I received both shipments on the same day and had all my new toys in front of me. After following the video advice on OWC’s website for the installation of the second drive I started the mini and formatted the SSD to accept the OS from Recovery on the original HD. This MacMini shipped with 10.8.2 (12C2034) as the OS, the normal build of 10.8.2 is (12C60). Having used Recovery Disk Utility to format the SSD it came back with an error that DU could’t Repair. I went ahead and installed the OS on the SSD and the Mini booted normally from both drives. The issue I encountered with this setup was that iMovie encountered an “unexpected error” and would not save a completed project. I therefore decided to figure the drive issue out because I suspect the new Fusion File Management software didn’t like my configuration with drives that Recovery DU saw as needing to be “fixed”. After spending some time on the phone with both OWC and Apple Support I took the plunge and used Internet Recovery Disk Utility and allowed both drives to be “fixed” after which DU created a Fusion Drive (Logical Drive) that I then ran Repair Disk on and it showed up as a single drive in DU. It works perfectly as described by Apple’s site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
Having checked the Link Speed and Negotiated Speed they both show as 6g so I’m pleased not to have lost performance due to it being fuzed to a 3g 5400 drive. The biggest drawback is that Apple’s Fusion Management only allows for 1 additional partition and I would have preferred more than that.
I have sourced some additional information here:

If anyone has a factory Fusion Drive could you please post the Link and Negotiated Speeds of both drives? This information can be found in Apple > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report >  Serial ATA and the drives should show up as discrete drives with their info listed separately.
