Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7

Try, in preferences, resetting 64 bit to 32 bits.  Should work fine.  the older vidoes, etc will not work with 64 bit.  Had the same problem/scare.  Let us know if this helps and works!

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

  • Problem using time machine from migrated MacBook Pro

I upgraded from a 2.66Gig 15 inch dual core to a 2.2GHz 15 inch quad core (MacBook Pro 8,2) - I used setup assistant to transfer files and settings form the old mac to the new one over ethernet - Everything (apps, documents, preferences) transferred fine and the new mac is a clone of the other except for being able to use time machine. On running for the first time I get an error dialog "Time machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "Volumes/backups/restOfPath.sparsebundle" could not be accessed(error-1).
I tried a full reset of TM (deselecting the backup drive, turning off, deleting the preferences .plist and rebooting), with the same result. The image that is created is 1.6TB (on a 1 TB Iomega Home Storage drive). The image of my old time machine reflects the drive size -I don't know if this is a problem, both images are twice the size of the respective mac's inbuilt drives).
I looked at the troubleshooting tips and installed TM buddy - the log from the new mac shows this:
    Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Ray%[email protected]/backups
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Ray%[email protected]/backups

    Ejected Time Machine network volume.
The original mac can still use it's backup on the same disc - it gives the same warnings about Lock Stealing and Server Reply Cache, I'll append a report from TM Buddy below this one.
I'd appreciate any help that people can provide - I'm using the same username and password connecting to the backup disc from either mac so I'm presuming it's not an access privilege thing (but if it is I may need an idiots guide to changing these:))
    Cheers

Sorry - I totally missed this longer post you made - here are the answers to the best of my knowledge - I seem to have answered a couple accidentally in my next post, but didn't directly address what you'd asked - sorry about that I just totally missed your post before reposting an update to (what I thought was) my one-man thread!
    {quote:title=Pondini wrote:}
When you set up Time Machine on that NAS, do you create the sparse bundle manually, or does the NAS do it? Is there a setting on the NAS to limit the size? (One of the disadvantages to using a 3rd-party NAS is, few folks here, or with Apple, know much about how that particular NAS interacts with OSX).
    {quote}
It seems that the NAS does it automatically, sometimes wrongly (it puts the wrong MAC in occasionally, and it appends .local after the username (not sure of the relevance of this, but in the manual setup that got me limping along in the later post, it doesn't mention the .local bit and I didn't use it (maybe this is why the access is through ip address now?)
Those seem to mean your NAS isn't fully compatible with Snow Leopard. See if there's a software/firmware update for it.
I'm using the latest firmware, and it works with the other mac also running 10 6.6
also throwing the same warning but with no apparent problem (yet:P)
I'd appreciate any help that people can provide - I'm using the same username and password connecting to the backup disc from either mac so I'm presuming it's not an access privilege thing (but if it is I may need an idiots guide to changing these:))
That would be on the NAS, not OSX, so you'd need their instructions or help.
Indeed it was (fix seems to be to manually install a newly created sparsebundle)
You might try repairing the sparse bundle. Follow the instructions for a Time Capsule in #A5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Thanks - I tried that I think ( I read though most of your site and tried many things:)), but with no joy - thanks for taking the time to provide this useful resource.
On a Time Capsule or AirDisk, where Time Machine creates the sparse bundle, it's actual size starts out at just a few hundred MBs (the directory structure, etc.), then grows as backups are added. It's maximum size is set at the size of the volume it's on.
That seems to be the way with this too (the actual size is a few hundred megs - though disc utility reports it to be 1.5TB which is twice the size of the Mac disc)
Thanks again for your time and input,
    Ray

  • Using Time Machine from external hard drive to start using a new MacBook

I recently totalled my MacBook (white) and am now looking to replace it with a second hand MacBook. I have an (un-totalled) external harddrive and have been using Time Machine to keep everything backed up. I found a second hand MacBook at a reasonable price but it runs OSX Tiger, whereas my old one ran Leopard. So my question is, will it be possible to plug in my external harddrive and restore everything, including the operating system, on this new (used) MacBook, or should I be looking for one that runs Leopard?
    Many thanks for reading!

You can restore from Time Machine using Leopard or Snow Leopard only. What I would do if I were you is buy either of the MacBooks, but make sure you get a Snow Leopard install disc--either a retail one if you buy the Tiger MacBook, or the install disc for the pre-loaded software on the SL MacBook.
Use the SL install disc to completely erase and (re)install Snow Leopard on the MacBook. Since your Mac will be second-hand, you should fully erase it and start fresh, just in case there are some nasty little malwares left behind or other problems the original owner didn't want to deal with.
After the install, use Migration Assistant to get your data off the TM drive.

  • Using time machine on MacBook Pro

I just bought a MacBook Pro and am not able to use time machine. The AppleCare wireless expert mentioned that I am not able use time machine because I am not hooked up to a hard drive. He also mentioned I would have to purchase time capsule in order to back up my work. Does anyone have any other more affordable suggestions to back up my work other than time capsule? Thanks

Apple is always going to suggest using an Apple Solution to backup you data. In order to use time machine you will need an external hard drive. You can purchase any drive you would like just make sure if you are plugging it directly in to your Mac that it has either USB 2.0 or Firewire 800 connections or both. When you first plug in the device your Mac will ask you if you would like to use the drive for backing up. Select yes and you will be good to go.
    Good Luck.

  • Best way to migrate using Time Machine backup

My wife has an '08 iMac. I think it originally had Leopard. Along the way I updated it to Snow Leopard and then Mountain Lion. It also has an external USB hdd and we've used Time Machine to backup to it since we've had it.
We just picked up a new iMac with Mavericks. It's still in the box. I'm under the impression that I can just power up the new one, start Migration Assistant, plug in the external drive, and it will copy all her stuff over from the latest TM backup.
Is that right? Is it that simple? Are there any known issues or gotchas?
I've searched and seen issues from people that turned out to be caused by anti-virus software. I'm assuming that out of the box that won't be an issue.
I also saw a reference to a TM "clone" backup. I don't know exactly what this is. Do I need one, or any other special TM backup, or should the default TM backup work?
I've also seen references to Setup Assistant being used to migrate data to a new iMac. Would I be better off using this or Migration Asst?
I saw a link that I thought would answer that, "Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ", but that just takes me to the top-level support page. I also saw a link to setup instructions from Pondini, but that requires me to log into iCloud, which my account can't do. I think my wife's can, so I'll try hers and check it in the morning.
Anything else I should know? Anything else I should tell you before you answer that?
Also, any idea how long this should take to migrate? Her internal drive shows 400G used.
    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks very much for the response.

As you are using an USB external drive and you probably want to transfer a lot of files (you say that the old internal drive shows 400 GB of used storage), it may take several hours. I do not recommend you to transfer everything or you may experience performance issues (if you had problems in the old iMac)
Can you elaborate on this? Do you mean we shouldn't restore apps, or something more fine-grained? We're mainly interested in her data (docs, music, photos, etc.).
Yes, the old one gives occassional WSODs, which was part of the motivation for the upgrade. I'm unclear on whether it's due to one or two specific apps. She always seems to have lots of apps open.
I have a follow-up question. I saw an Apple migration page that said after migration, if you don't plan to keep using the old iMac, then deauthorize it from iTMS and turn off "find my Mac" and sign out of iCloud. We are thinking of giving the old one to our 3-year old. Should I do the deauthorize, etc. or just create a new account for her, or does it not even matter?
    Thank again.

  • Retrieval of just photos using Time Machine backup

Had the hard disk replaced on my iMac.  I would now like to retrieve just the photos and videos (that were in iPhoto) from the backup (used Time Machine).  I don't want to restore the entire thing.  How do I go about doing this?

I think you hit it on the last part.
When you reinstall the OS (or use a new system) and create a username, if it is the same as the username that you are trying to restore, there will be a conflict. Items in the users folder (music, documents, pictures... any subfolder) are bound to that UID. You should be able to rename the user account that you set up on the new system, then restore the old user and docs and delete the initial "setup" user account. Once they log in with the restored user account, permissions should be fine.

  • I just started using Time Machine, and it's driving me crazy.

It's just constantly backing up. It never stops, even when nothing has changed on my computer, it finds another 3gbs. Really? Why? I expected Time Machine to work like Dropbox: if I add a file or change a file, it updates. But it really doesn't, and I don't understand why not. It's enough to make me just turn it off and back up manually. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Did you read the manual on how to properly use Time Machine?

  • Error-code when launching Time Machine from MacBook Pro

I´ve get this error-code when launching Time Machine: An unaspected error has acourd (errorcode -6584)
    Solution on this?

Sounds like OSX has lost track of where it is.  Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 there.

    Hello,
I have now noticed that the cmd+shift+g method works OK if you are doing a standard restore from the TM on the current system, but does not work when using a TM from another machine. I do not know enough about Unix file structures to specify the correct file under these circumstances, any help woudl be grateful

Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
