Just opened my 160GB classic. Only 147GB of memory?

Earlier this year Apple had to replace one of my ipods with this upgraded classic that I haven't used until now. It is the 160GB classic. I haven't connected to my mac yet. I realize that software takes up some space on the ipod, but over 10 GB? It's the 160gb and it's telling me that 148GB is free (and I haven't put anything on it).
Is it true that their software takes up 12 GB of space? Am I missing the obvious here and something will change once I connect?

I know that officially there are two methods for stating a 1GB of space... the "1000 rule (Decimal way)" and the "1024 rule (Binary way)"... that alone doesn't tick me off....
what ticks me off is that HDD makers used to do the 1024/Binary method and then switched to the 1000/Decimal just to save some $$$$ and instantly make the HDDs they were making seem larger and all at the expense of the consumer.
...and just as hexonxonx said, the problem only gets worse with each larger and larger hard drive. At some point down the road we'll buy a hard drive "missing" 1 terabyte of space.
OK, I feel a little better again... haven't complained about that HDD size issue in a few years... it was a nice revisit.
EDIT - It's even more irratating because all software makers use the 1024/Binary way to calculate space... so when you see something say it will require "1GB of space to install"... they're using the 1024 rule... while the HDD makers use the 1000 rule. grrrrr... ok, calming down now, lol.

Thanks to all for reviewing my question. I am trying to avoid a possible disaster here, having to load about 90 cd's all over again. If anyone knows, could you tell me what will happen if I download iTunes 9.0, and install it. 160gb classic, only working when attached to mains power outlet

In last 24 hrs my classic has decided to only switch on when plugged into mains outlet. Screen flickers when attached to laptop, had to restart computer to get it to switch on and sync. I have tried restoring to factorysettings before synching tunes back to it. Anyone out there who to can resolve this before I have to pay for repairs?

Take it to somebody with more experience fixing iPods.

Extra Playlists downloading to 160gb classic

I have had and iPod for several years now, so I know how to use iTunes and sync an iPod. I just purchased a 160gb classic and configured it to download only selected playlists with checked songs. However, it also downloads 5 additional playlists that I didn't select. I created a new playlist, moved the music into it, and changed my iPod to use the new one. It still downloads the others. It does, however, download the one I designate.
Any idea what is heppening?

Nope, but it happens to me too.. I manage 4 iPods and I seem to get the odd extra playlist listed which is not selected to be copied. They're all smart playlists and are empty on the iPods they're not intended for. I've been able to remove them sometimes by switching to manual sync, deleting & switching back to auto again.

Hello. I just ordered my 160gb classic and i've seen some bad things about it on this forum. I was wondering if someone who has the 160gb classic could answer a few questions for me...
1) Is there really that much lag with the new user interface compared to previous models?
2) What is the "actual" capacity of the 160gb? maybe 150gb?
3) Any other noticeable differences from the 5.5 gen iPod?

great battery life! so far i have been running lossless for 16 hrs through the line out with the headphone master volume turned all the way down since i use an outboard headphone amp & headphones through a pocket dock & the battery meter is at about the 1/2 way mark. the best i could get out of the 80gb 5.5 gen was about 5 hours with lossless. the 160gb does have a couple glitches. the "now playing screen" goes into a clock screen saver mode after a couple of minutes & you have to scroll the wheel to get "now playing" back & there is no way to set the screen saver's time or even find a screen saver option in the menu. sometimes if you uncheck items in the main menu so you will not have to see them at the start menu. for instance, i unchecked "podcasts" in main menu & it was still in the start screen. i checked it & unchecked it again & it finally went away. otherwise it sounds great & all we need is a firmware update.

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

There are two options. The first is to learn whatever language you have it set to, the second is to find someone else with an iPod Classic and read the English menu and follow it in your iPod. I also believe you may be able to set language perfunces from within iTunes while the iPod is docked, providing they are in English.

Exactly what did you do?
The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

I've got a feeling that's the way it is. I know that if I turn the volume down all the way, I can still hear the music very softly -- which is great for listening when I have a migraine!

Firefox crashed and when opened, it opened with just the first 25 tabs only. Also, I sessionrestore.js does not exist. Just sessionstore bak files.

Hello, when it crashed, I did not get the normal window to select tabs to restore. It just opened the first 25 or so tabs. I looked in other forums about the sessionrestore.js file and searched for it but it doesn't seem to exist. I did this:
copy and paste this: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into your adress bar in windows explorer. It will bring you to your Firefox profile folder. Enter it, and search for a file called "sessionrestore.js", then right-click it and go to properties. The last tab in the 'properties' window is called "previous versions", click on it, and restore your file to a previous date saved on a System Restore storepoint. That's it! When you open Firefox again all your previous tabs will be there.
MY system restore point is a couple of weeks ago and a lot of tabs were created since then.

Thank you for your message as well. That option in about:config, if it is set to false the oops page will not show up, if you would like this to set it to true for future recoveries if you would like.
This previous question has a few options to restore the 150 tabs, however I am not sure if it will work if the sessionrestore.js file is not there:

The option show tabs from last time may have a limit, but I am not sure, let me check if there is a default.
This was pretty handy as well when I was looking: [http://mzl.la/MCnd4M] That kb shows that it may just be as easy as renaming the .bak file to .js, however please save a copy of the file before renaming it so that it does not become corrupt. Because it crashed it cannot be sure that it is not corrupt.
The .bak file will only be from the last time firefox was open. Each time firefox is opened the file will be overwritten, so just to warn you the 150 tabs may not be there if you have closed it since it reopened after the crash.

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, I lose a note in my notes application. This happens when I either have just opened a notes page or when next time I open my ipad, a note just isn't there anymore. It does seem to occur randomly i.e. independent of note size or age. Very annoying. I guess it can only be retrieved from iCloud before the next automatic back-up? Does anyone know why this happens and what can be done about it to prevent it in future? Is there a limit to how many note pages this app can store (presently I have about 70). I have started to email every note I make on my iPad to myself to be on the safe side. Is the Notes App really so unreliable? Anyone else with the same problem?

Oddly enough, the size/format of some names can make odd things happen with network Time Machine backups, and at least one of yours may be involved. See #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Do your self a favor, though. Even if you get this working, do not depend on these backups 100%. There's a reason Apple doesn't support it -- it's not reliable.

My mistake, it was nothing to do with format. It woldn't sync because my movies were HD. HD movies won't sync to an iopd classic 160 GB but when you purchase a HD movie, itunes gives you a SD vervsion of the movie which is compatible with the ipod. Just needed to go to store, click movies, click purchased and untick the HD box and there you have the SD versions. Download the SD versions and then sync your ipod and bobs you uncle, movies are on the ipod
