Just opening InDesign file changes "Date Modified" date?

Hi,
Running InDesign CC w/ Mac 10.9.5 and if the file has say yesterdays date listed as the "Date Modified" in the file listing.
If I just want to open the file just to take a quick look at the file without making any changes the "Date Modified" automatically changes to the exact time/date as opening the file.
Why? I need the "Date Modified" to stay correct.

I've tried this experiment with InDesign 10 (CC2014) on my MacOS 10.9.5 system and do not see any changes to the OS modification date for the file. Same is true under Windows. And I tried doing some suspicious operations to the document such as printing and PDF export. Closed the document and checked the File Information. The Modification Date did not change. And it normally would not change unless you explicitly save the file. Anything else you are doing while reviewing the document? Again, we would like to help, but can't repeat your symptoms.
BTW, an experiment to try is to “lock” the file using the MacOS Get Info dialog and then repeat your experiment. When opening the document in InDesign, you will see the window labeled as “read-only.” What happens when you subsequently close the document and look at the file modification date?
And of course, I assume you are not confusing the file modification date with the “last opened” timestamp!

  • CS 3.0.1 will not open InDesign files created in 2008  - it says a plug-in may be missing.

My CS 3.0.1 will not open InDesign files created in 2008.  It says a plug-in may be missing.  I did have a computer crash since I last opened it.  I've tried changing the extension to inx, but that doesn't work.  I cannot get the file to open.  Can someone help?

The OP is using CS. He/she could be trying to open CS2 or later.
Simply changing the file extension will do know good and only an INX exported from CS2 will work.

  • Another CS6 program open indesign files?

Can another program in CS6 open indesign files to read them?  We have a user who only needs to look at her employees' work and not edit it, we don't want to purchase the master collection or indesign seperately if we can avoid it.  Thank you!

InCopy is a tool used by writers, editors, and copyeditors in publication workflows. It is best used as a tool for editing copy, but if you want you can use it to preview documents. If the document doesn't open in Layout mode automatically, you can view it by changing the tab near the top of your screen.

  • Cant open Indesign files unless opening through Bridge

We have just upgraded our PCs to CS5 & cannot open InDesign files unless we open them through Bridge, we have tried open with but this doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions? Illustrator & Photoshop are fine.

Sounds like an issue where either the folder you opened the last file from conventionally is no longer available or you do not have sufficient permissions to access it. The info on the last used folders/ files is retained by the programs and if something goes astray, that can cause this behavior. In any case, trashing the prefs to get rid of the wrongly stored paths might be enough, so try that. Simply move the files in C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.0\en_US out of the way and let the program create new factory defaults.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Open Indesign files in photoshop

Hello, I use photoshop cs2. Are you able to open Indesign files in CS3? I am considering upgrading.
    Shawn

No. As Ed states, they are two different programs with totally different uses.
Now, you can Place PS files (any version of PSD) into InDesign (or AI). I have had a very few problems with recent PSDs, without Compatibility checked NOT opening in InDesign. Folk tell me that this is not an issue between CS3 InDesign & PS, but I cannot check this.
Do your layout work in InDesign and your photo work in PS. Only other option would be, again as Ed states, use a PDF, but it will get rasterized in PS, and will not be easily editable.

  • InCopy Crashes when trying to open InDesign file.

InCopy just spins when trying to open an Indesign file and will eventualy cause InCopy to crash. When InCopy is then reopened the file will be recovered but the only tab available is layout view, both story view and gallery view are missing. The editor needs story view to make corrections.
The designer sets up the file with InDesign CS6 v. 8.0.1 on a mac w/osx v.10.7.5 the editor was using InCopy CS6 v.8.0.1 but has received new hardware and is on v8.0.2 windows 7. One of our Editors does receive this message Adobe InDesign is missing required files, Please reinstall.
We have upgraded editors hardware to allow more resorces.
Please advise what may be the cause.

Why would one of your editors receive a message about "Adobe InDesign is missing required files, please reinstall"? Aren't they using InCopy (not InDesign)?
Re the InCopy crashes, it sounds like the INDD file might be damaged. You can test this by having the InDesign user create a new test document and export one story to the workflow. See if the InCopy user can open that INDD file over the network, check out the test story, make a change, save it, check it back in, and then the InDesign user update the story on their end.

  • Error when trying to open InDesign file

InDesign might have crashed when my document was open, I'm not sure. Now when I'm trying to open the file I get the message "Cannot open (name of file)". I tried opening it on a different computer, I tried changing the file name and nothing worked.
I tried taking a previous copy from my time machine, and it was the same. I've worked hours on this file, please tell me there's a way to restore it. Thanks so much.

Do you have any other "weirdly-named" InD files in that folder? If so, try deleting them. InD may be trying to open that "weird" temp file repeatedly and if it's corrupt, hence the message.
Just a thought as that's happened to me several times and I have to find those temp files and delete them in order to open the original for editing again.

  • Can't open InDesign file in latest version of InDesign

I've received InDesign files from a colleague, and when I open them it says it was created in a newer version of InDesign. We are both on Macs, CC subscription, and we are both up to date on CC (all apps up to date). Why can't I open his files??

You need to download and install InDesign CC. You only CS6 installed.
Easiest way to install InDesign CC is to go to creative.adobe.com and click on download center. Find InDesign CC and download from there.

  • InCopy suddenly fails to open InDesign file

I'm a designer working on my first book project using the InDesign/InCopy workflow, using Dropbox as our server. I share my .indd file (Mac) with one offsite editor who uses InCopy for the PC.
We've been working without a glitch for about two months. Yesterday, my editor told me she couldn't get in to the .indd file from Dropbox--InCopy just crashes, and she gets this message:
“InCopy.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to us. . . ."
She was also getting a red X icon next to the shared folder where we store the .indd file. At this point, we discovered that we were over our free Dropbox limit of 2GB, so we both upgraded to 50GB of storage. Though the red X is gone now that we're both upgraded, InCopy still crashes every time she tries to open the file, even though she can open another (smaller and newer) .indd file I posted for her yesterday.
I'm having no problems with the .indd file so it's difficult to know what the problem is from my end.
She checked her hard drive space and still has 181GB free, so I don't think it's a Dropbox cache issue. But it seems odd that her inability to open the file coincided with us reaching our Dropbox limits, even though that should have been resolved once we both upgraded.
Any ideas for how we can get this to work again?

  • Cannot open InDesign files on Mac that were saved on PC

I subscribe to Create Suite and have it installed on both my Mac and PC. So, they should both be the most current version, right? All updates are current.
A few (not all) InDesign files that were created/saved on a PC will not open up on my Mac. I get this message:
Cannot open [file name] because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0).
You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in these version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML.
"Save As InDesign CS4" actually has IDML in parenthesis, so it's all one option. When I bring the file over to my mac, it doesn't open properly (for example all the images are gone).
Could it be possible that there is a newer version of InDesign only for my PC and my Mac can't open those files? Seems ridiculous.

You would have no problem opening a file in version 10.0 if it was saved in 10.1, just as you would have no problem opening any other version dot release file in ay dot release of that version.
The problem here is the PC was updated to CC2014 and the Mac was not.
The OP also mentioned missing pictures when using IDML. IDML removes the previews, but you would need the linked images in any case for output, regardless of whether  you use .indd or IDML to move the file.

  • Opening Indesign file triggers random document opens

I am working in Indesign CC 2014 am having a particularly odd glitch when opening documents, where, on opening they seem to trigger the opening of other Indesign documents without me even clicking anywhere - let alone wanting to open them in the first place.
I am working on redesigning page layouts from a printed publication so they fit the format of an ipad magazine - so I tend to copy text and images from one indesign document to the other. I did wonder whether this was some how linking the files so that when i opened one, the other opened automatically but sometimes the document that is triggered is from months ago (which can be very frustrating as indesign opens multiple copies of older files as there is no lock on 'converted' files so I end up with ~20 copies of the same thing that cannot be closed without more opening). It can also be a bit random as to whether it triggers a document opening at all with the same file.
I have tried ditching my prefs to no avail - and searching for similar topics here, but the only similar one was from 2013
Fairly new to CC after moving from CS3 earlier this year, so it could be something that I'm just not aware of doing - but any help/insight would be appreciated.
    • This problem also occurs on other machines in the office (all running mavericks) but just appears to be random as to whether it does it or not on each file.

There's nothing in the cross references panel, I'll keep an eye on this in future though as I was unaware of it - and nothing in system prefs also unfortunately.
It doesn't seem to happen all the time though, so for example, when I opened a file this morning that i had worked previously with no such issues - lets call it 'september.indd'. As soon september.indd loads, a new document that i didn't ask to open (lets call it 'august.indd') opens up repeatedly - this morning I ended up with september.indd open and 12 x august.indd (all showing as converted). As i tried to close the copies of august.indd more opened up. I ended up just force quitting indesign - and on restarting I got september.indd opening fine with 12 copies of untitled.indd, which all closed fine and I had no more problems with september.indd.
The whole things abit unpredictable, so i haven't been able to replicate it since my original post but i will keep an eye on it against your suggestions for when it happens again in the next day or so.

  • How to open a file, change the name and write file

    Hi,
I want to open an existing .dat-file in Labview, manipulate the data and save this data into a new file with a different file name.
Though the name should be different I would like to use the old name and add something to it.
(In my programm the .dat file containes the date and time the data was
measured and I would like to keep this information in the filename.)
For example: the original title is file1.dat now I want to save it as file1_manipulated.dat
Is that possible? What is the best and easiest way to do it?
    Thanks a lot
    Chris

    Hi Mike,
    thanks for your help.
This will give me my path in string format. But to open a new file and then write my data into it, I need a path format (see right side of png)
    Is that right?
I attached a png, so you hopefully get an idea where this is going. (I know this won´t work yet)
I open a file and this filename depends on the date and time the data was recorded. So I can´t work with a stringconstant.
Sorry for this beginner questions - this stuff is absolutly new to me.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

  • Problems opening InDesign Files

I can open one file but when I try to open a second file it never loads, it just sits there thinking. When I force close the program and reopen InDesign the two files open automatically and are ready to be worked on.
FYI here is my set up
    Design Premium CS5
    Windows 7 OS

I'm not terribly surprised, but it does work for lots of flakiness and is quick and painless compared to other things we have to look at now.
Do you have any third party plugins or a font manager installed?
Since this is happening on two machines, do both of you have some background program in common that might be running? Any other apps open?
