Just order new imac... was it smart

I just ordered a new imac computer with quad core i5. 2.8 Ghz processor 1 gig video card and 8 gig of ram 27 inch screen. Now all the boards and rumors are saying the new thunderbolt on macbooks and I undersand it wont be backwards compatible. Did I do a not so smart thing. I want the new ipad and gonna get the next iphone when it comes out so I will be going all mac. Just having 2nd thoughts on maybe I moved too fast for an imac. But then again will anyone ever keep up with tech? Your thoughts?

I just went through that decision process a few days ago. I ended up ordering a refurbished 2.93 i7 and 16GB Samsung memory from OWC. I have already received the memory and the iMac is scheduled to be delivered on Monday (Feb 28).
I was going to wait for the new iMacs and decided not to do so for a couple of reasons:
1. The first release of any product usually has a high failure rate and the Apple products are no exception. Unless you actually like being on the bleeding edge it is better to wait a while. Most of the pervasive bugs in the current i7 line have been worked out.
2. There are only a couple of things that may be in the new iMacs that I could use...Sandybridge and Thunderbolt.
I did an extensive comparison between the current i7 and an i7 Sandybridge and decided that for my use Sandybridge would only give me a slight increase in speed.
I also think that Thunderbolt has a good chance of succeeding, but like all new I/O 'standards' it will take a while for it to gain traction. Products that work well with it will be few and far between for a while, maybe a year or more.
Only time will tell if I made the "Right" choice, but in this instance there is no "Wrong" choice.

  • Just ordered new iMac do I still need a modem/router for Internet access

Just  converted to apple, ordered a new IMAC but little confused on Internet access.
does the extreme still need a modem/router,just a little confused after reading all the comments about poor connections etc.
Old windows soldier sorry if a little vague .

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

You can return a computer within 14 days of purchase for a refund.

Do you really mean an iMac2?  If you do you're about 10 years too late in wanting to return it.  I guess if you do have an iMac2 then it makes sense you posted on the iMac(PPC) forum since this one is for models at least 6 years old.

I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • I have an iPhone in my name and my wife has an iPad in her name. We have just ordered an iMac and wondered which account we should use to get the best out of all the devices

I have an iPhone in my name and my wife has an iPad in her name. We have just ordered an iMac and wondered which account we should use to get the best out of all the devices? Can we use both accounts in iCloud?

Yes you can.  However, it is better to use one person's account most of the time for purchases in the Mac App Store and iTunes since you can share purchases, such as songs, among various devices using the SAME account.  You Cannot share purchases among different accounts, though.   So make one of your accounts the main "purchasing" account so you can share purchases.
    Hope this helps

Just purchased new iMac. How do I download free os x Lion?

    Greetings Peter,
The website for Lion up to date is here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
As Csound1 suggests you should definitely check with all the software manufacturers whose software you depend on to ensure their software is compatible with this new OS.  If you upgrade without checking on those program's compatibility you may find yourself without tools you rely on.
You should also backup all your data prior to installing any new software for safekeeping: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553.
    Cheers.

Just purchase new iMac and migrated. I want to strip my 2 year old iMac of personal files and photos and take to my office. Is there a simple method? Thx

The simplest way, is to erase the drive and reinstall the OS X.

Other than that, you will have to trash all your User files, delete all the photos from within iPhoto and then empty the trash.

  • Just this new iMac doesn't have internet connection?

My network is working fine on two other macs running Mavericks. I purchased and set up a new iMac this week and it had been running fine. But this morning my hope network reads as though there in no internet connection...the wifi is fine and strong. Also, airport utility can't see my express or extreme.
Oddly though, the iMac and connect to my neighbours open network just fine.
I've tried starting and restarting, even checking to see f the problem was duplicated on the guest account...
    Any ideas?

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
       It will take a while.
      Restart the computer.

  • Just ordered new Macbook!

I just ordered a new macbook and I just have a question. I see there are a ton of rsd problems and there are some long waits on repair times. I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is something that is fixed with the new Macbooks that are shipping now, or is this still an issue? Thanks for your help!

Some rumors said that apple silently replacing the heat sink that when it become hot, it expanded and make contact and short the component and caused Macbook to shutdown. Or the heatsink is not that good to absorb the heat and make the MacBook shut down.
A lot of theory up there in this forum, some might be true and some just plain speculation (which is actually not propriate and allowed in this forum).
But from what I see, later Macbook production user is less in this forum to report their MacBook RSD (I'm not saying there isn't any), and I believe apple really listen and try to prevent it happen again in later production or previous one by creating newer firmware updater and maybe replacing parts to prevent the rsd occur anymore.
So Good Luck and enjoy your MacBook, not to worry with a ton of problem you read for there is a lot more happy user that not bother to post their glorious moment with macbook.

  • Just purchased new iMac/need to transfer e-mail and a few other questions.

    Hello,
I just purchased a new iMac yesterday, and so far so good!  I had an iMac with Leopard, however, it was time to upgrade.  I was using Time Machine, and I was able to move my music and photos to the computer ( I did not want to mirror my new computer with the old one except for my iTunes library and iPhoto library ) so I moved them manually.  I did have to delete the iTunes folder and iPhoto library that was already in the home folder though - I assume that was correct because it worked.  Also, iPhoto had to "upgrade" while opening my pictures due to the older version of iPhoto - this was supposed to happen right?
So, the only other thing that I want on my new computer is my old e-mails.  I set up mail which was quite easy, and about 250 of my messages came back - what happened to my inbox that was over 1,000 e-mails?  I really would like everything back.  These messages must be on Time Machine - can I move them as easy as I moved the pictures/music?
I have to say, it's nice having my entire old computer on an external harddrive - it's made this process much easier.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Your method of migrating iTunes/iPhoto is one of the more 'dirtier' ways to do it, but absolutely works with no harm. The way you transfered (by deleting the library folders) can sometimes erase previous settings/content, but seeing as the libraries were empty and from a fresh install, no harm is done.
    2. iPhoto update is okay!
    3. To import previous mailbox backups from Time Machine: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11713
    Hope this helps.

Just bought brand new new iMac. When browsing in Safari, sometimes the text suddenly gets super large. I'm doing nothing except reading the screen, tho I usually have my hand resting lightly on the mouse. I can get back to normal size by clicking "actual size" in View. But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click.  Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.

  • Just bought new imac, should i update things b4 i install Logic ?

Just bought a new iMac 27'' i7. Ran software update and a bunch of stuff showed up in the list:
    Currently i'm on 10.6.2
    Software update list shows
    10.6.3
    Java 10.6 update 1
    iTunes
    Airport Base Station update
    Remote desktop client
    iLife Support
    Safari
    Airport Client
Which of these do i need to update ?
I have not installed Logic or anything else, iMac is brand new and only been running for a few minutes now.
Also, there are updates available especially for the iMac 27'' :
    EFI FW Update 1.0
    SMC Update 1.0
Plus there are Snow Leopard security updates available too.....
How should i proceed before i install Logic Pro 9 ??
    PLease advise.
    Thanks
    Faisal

Well, I don't intend to be using it "less" strictly in the sense of time spent - I'll probably still keep it in my lap all the time surfing the web in front of the TV... but yeah, no intensive graphics or music use, just web surfing and the occasional spreadsheet or word document. So long as I won't have networking and file sharing issues then it probably doesn't make sense to upgrade.

  • Just ordered new Mini... how do I move my info/programs over

    Good evening.
I just ordered a new Mini. I already have one of the older models. When I get my new one, how do I move my programs/data to my new mini? Is this a fairly easy process?
I also have a minimate connected to my current mini. Once I get everything moved over and plug in the mini, will it recognize the minimate and handle everything on it as if nothing had changed (or close to it)?
    Thanks for the help.

All you need is a FireWire cable to connect the two Macs & the Setup Assistant will walk you through the process. If you don't want to do it during the initial setup of your new Mac mini, you can use the Migration Assistant later to move what you want. You can even do a combination, use the Setup Assistant to move users & settings & move anything else later.

  • Just ordered new calls package / line rental. Do I...

    Hi All,

The activation date isn't until 28th March which is fine but do i need to cancel my old phone package and line rental with sky?

    Hi d80adc,
I would at least notify your current supplier that your leaving and tell them what date your new service is estimated to be activated.

  • Ordering new iMac Intel Core Duo

I am about to order the new iMac. I noticed that the wait estimated shipping time increases with certain items. There is a 3-5 day delay for Memory & Graphics Memory. Can I purchase these separately and add them myself? Also, the HD upgrade to the 500 G adds a 3-4 weeks shipping? Can I add these later myself?
What upgrades are doable by the user?
    What configuration should I order?
    thanks,

    (some stuff deleted)
Adding RAM and hard disk space later should be
possible by opening up the system, as it has been
with previous iMac models. You'll save a little over
Apple's prices, as labor is included in their
    prices.
surprisingly, not always the case - at least here in Canada (for now).
So far, the only price I've found for the iMac SO-DIMM (certified to work in these Macs) is CDN $174 for 1GB. The options are (for now)...
1- buy 2, 1GB modules for $348+$10 shipping and try to sell the 512MB.
2- Apple BTO to 2GB for $360 ($333 educational for me) OR
3- Apple BTO to 1GB for $120 ($111 educational) and order a second one 1GB from a reputable RAM supplier for $174 for a total of $294/$285.
If I choose to go with this iMac, it looks like Apple's smaller upgrade is a better deal with the remaining 1GB left to a different supplier.
No documentation has been posted yet for the new
iMacs, though, so it's anyone's guess as to how easy
any of these upgrades are with the redesigned
internal layout of the system hardware.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303084
... now, if only I could figure out what happen to all of my other past posts over the years (back down under 10 makes me feel sooooo sad!
