Just ordered a 32gb 3GS on Orange - some questions

Just ordered by 32gb and it will be with me Tuesday / Wednesday of next week. I'm a long term BlackBerry user but have decided to switch due to the sheer amount of apps etc available. Anyway, some questions about making "the change"....
I have two email accounts I use regularly, a work Exchange account and a personal Yahoo account. Am I right in thinking that these will both provide push mail? Exchange due to the iPhone's support for exchange, and Yahoo as they have some arrangement with Apple so this works?
Also, all my contacts are currently stored on my BB (ignore the Exchange contacts, I'm not worried about them). If I sync these to a new Outlook profile on my PC, and then sync that new profile with the iPhone, all my contacts will be transferred?
Many thanks,
Ed Ludlow

As long as the email provider supports push email, and even if they don't, you can manually setup many email accounts as an IMAP account on the iphone, or worst case sonorous, you can setup an account as a pop account and enable periodic fetching for that particular account.
Regarding you contacts, correct. Sync them to Outlook, and whatever contacts you have in Outlook then, if you have selected "sync contacts with Outlook" under the info pane in iTunes, your contacts will be synced with your iPhone.
One word of advice, I would suggest you tick "replace contacts on iphone" right at the bottom of the info pane in itunes the first time you sync.

  • Ordered the Airport Extreme Base Station - some questions if you can help?

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit IBM ThinkPad T500 laptop I need to connect, and a Windows Vista PC. The ThinkPad has a built-in wirless N card and the Vista has a Belkin N+ USB wireless adapter. Can these both find and connect to the Airport without me installing any software (Bonjour etc) on them?
Since they are using the N+ wireless cards, will they connect to the Airport at 2GHZ or 5GHZ speed? If they can connect at either speed, what controls that?
I also have a MACPro desktop. I was hoping to configure my airport using it and hoped not to have to worry about configuring the other 2 pcs.
My old router was a Belkin n+ 2GHz router. Could I use that router as a repeater with the Airport. How can I do that?
Thanks for any help on these questions.

    Welcome to the discussions, Michael!
I can't help on your Windows / PC related questions, but can offer some input on the last two questions.
+"I also have a MACPro desktop. I was hoping to configure my airport using it and hoped not to have to worry about configuring the other 2 pcs."+
You will use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Extreme. It should already be on your Mac. Check Hard Drive > Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility. This will also come on the installation CD.
+"My old router was a Belkin n+ 2GHz router. Could I use that router as a repeater with the Airport. How can I do that?"+
In order to "extend" a wireless network created by the AirPort Extreme(n), you would need another AirPort Extreme, an AirPort Express, or a Time Capsule. The Belkin would not be compatible with an Apple base station for this purpose.
If you connected an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme or used a pair of ethernet powerline adapters, then you could possibly configure the Belkin to create a wireless network, but unless it was 5 GHz capable, you would not be able to mimic the 5 GHz "main" network that the Extreme would be creating.

  • Upgrading from 3GS to 4, some questions

Hi everyone! I've had the 3GS since January and have been very happy with it, and will be upgrading to the iPhone 4 in a few days for Christmas. Long story short, we will be transferring the 3GS to my sister on her contract and I will be getting the new one, so basically I want to completely reset the 3GS to factory settings. However, I was wondering if it is possible to backup everything on it (ie, games, text message history, contacts, notes, videos, etc.) and then just transfer them over to my newer model come the 25th. I know iTunes has a backup option for the iPhone, I'm just not sure if it will allow me to do this.
So in essence I want my new iPhone to be the exact same as my old one other than the looks and new features. Just wondering if iTunes can automatically do this, or if I will have to look for a third-party program. If so, could you kindly explain to me how I would accomplish this? Thanks guys!

All iTunes content on your iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. All photos transferred from your computer should also be available on your computer. No iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer are included with your iPhone's backup.
    This link should be helpful.

  • I just ordered an iphone 5

i just ordered an iphone 5 and got some number what can i do with it?

Why do you need to do anything with it? Depending on what you selected, the phone will either show up at your house, or you will have to go pick it up at the store. If you ordered it for pickup, you will need that number when you go.

  • I just ordered an iPad 4 32gb from Amazon but sold by a store called iPadShop.  In the customer reviews there were several reports of this store selling used and refurbished iPads as new.  How can i verify mine is new and not used when it arrives.?

Ok, first time here, so forgive me if Im repeating the question.  I just ordered a NEW iPad 4 32gb from Amazon, but is actually being sold by a seller called "iPadShop". Although this seller got a high approval rating of 4.9 there were several reports of customers receiving used and refurbished iPads but sold as new.  Once I receive mine how can I verify it is new.  Also, even the ones that were new were purchased by this seller and then resold, which shortened the life of the 1 year warranty offered by Apple..?

If you just ordered it, I suggest you cancel your order as soon as possible. If you can't contact Amazon, call your credit card company and cancel payment on that. Why go through worrying about the ipad you are paying for as new? If it's to save money, then that can be defeated if you get a used or refurbished ipad with a less than full one year warranty. You'll be dealing with the ipad shop's return policy which could mean that once you open it, it's yours, unlike when you buy from Apple you have a full 14 days to return it even if you've opened it.
I looked at Amazon and did not see a price difference. If cost led you to buy from Amazon, what are you saving?
I suggest you buy it directly from Apple. If cost is an issue, consider buying a refurbished ipad from the Apple online Refurbished store. I would not buy a refurbished anything from anywhere but the Apple online refurb store.
The ipad 4 32 gb is $499.00 refurbished - a savings of $100.00 vs. a new one. We bought two ipads last year and one as a gift this year and they have been great!
All ipads sold in the Apple refurb store come with new front and back covers, a brand new battery, a full one year warranty, and in case it matters, come in a new white Apple box like all ipads do. Earphones and charger are also included. You can also get the new Apple Care +, which insures up to three breakages (damaged glass, water damage, etc.) in two years.
    Hope this helps.

  • I bought an factory unlocked iphone 3gs at the apple store today and just ordered a sim card activation kit and a 30 dollar minute card for it. the sim will work in the unlocked iphone am i correct?

i bought an factory unlocked iphone 3gs at the apple store today and just ordered a sim card activation kit and a 30 dollar minute card for it. the sim will work in the unlocked iphone am i correct? and i can use messaging on it right?

If T-Mobile in the US, while your phone will activate/work, you won't have FaceTime, MMS or 3G. T-Mobile, in the US, is not a supported iPhone carrier, thus all features of the iPhone may not be available. T-Mobile's 3G network, in the US, is not compatible with the iPhone.

  • Just ordered a MP and need some "set-up" advice...

    Hi All,
Like some, I waited all through Nov, and Dec to see if Apple was going to come out with an "octo" configuration and can't wait any longer. I just ordered one through Amazon as well as 2 extra gigs (2x1gb) of RAM from OWC. I will probably be ordering a couple of Maxline Pro 500g for a RAID 0 drive.
I am upgrading from a REV A iMac G5 and a MDD dual 1.25 G4. I use my iMac for design software (PS, AI etc.) and the G4 for FCS and iTunes. I have an extra 250gb HD in the G4. In addition I have a 250g external (usb 2...yuk) drive and another external 500g FW800 Lacie drive that I use for backups and an occasion PS scratch disk.
Does anyone have any reccomendations on a good configuration for design and Final Cut work using my existing equip? I.E. Should I keep the music on the G4, or use it as a backup? I have been doing so much research since the MacPro's came out that my head feels like it's gonna blow.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!
P.S. If Apple releases the "Octo Mac" at Macworld, I'm gonna slit my wrists.

Of course we're not allowed to speculate here on these forums, but last I heard (SPECULATION!!!) was that the octo will be an upgradeable solution to those of us who have the current MacPros... but don't count on what I say - PLEASE!!
Anyway -- I've been trying to hang onto my G4 as a seperate and controlable tower for a while... I must say - I'm going to finally get rid of it asap. Few things to keep in mind...
You need SATA drives in the MacPro - I'll wager your G4 has ATA drives. Don't work in the MacPro - EXCEPT you can slide it in your lower optical bay under the DVD drive and link it there... it's an ATA bus thingie.
Here's what I did... I bought a bunch of 320gig drives for about 100us and hooked the two machines up via Gigabite ethernet. Then, just copied the files to the new drives. And actually -- speed was fast enough that I was able to run FCS with the media on the network drives. Workable solution for the short term.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • My iPhone is a iPhone 3GS. For some reason, the ringer becomes silent although I have put the ringer on full volume. Would someone kindly teach me how to solve this problem? Many thanks!!

My iPhone is a iPhone 3GS. For some reason, the ringer becomes silent although I have put the ringer on full volume. Would someone kindly teach me how to solve this problem? Many thanks!!

Just to make sure... you have the phone in ringer mode right? Sometimes the switch on the side gets bumped (especially if you don't have a case on the iPhone) and goes into silent. If you see a orange line on the switch - it's on silent.
If the switch is fine (and isn't loose or anything) try restoring the iPhone in iTunes.

  • Order your iPhone 3Gs - Server Error FIX!

If you are trying to order a iPhone 3Gs (or 3G) and are getting an error:
"We experienced an error in processing your request. Please try again later."
it is probably due to a shared texting feature on your AT&T plan. Go to wireless.att.com, remove it, order your iPhone, select no texting, and then replace the texting plan from AT&T's website.
I just did it and was able to order a 32GB White iPhone. Before, I tried 20 times with no luck.
Thanks to GeorgeS77 earlier post for the info:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2031027&tstart=2

I got this error, and then tried my preorder through the AT&T website:
    http://www.wireless.att.com/iphone/
This worked for me and I didn't have to drop my shared text plan and add it back. For whatever reason the AT&T site handles the issue while the Apple one does not.
From what I could tell there is no difference between preordering here vs on the Apple site: both show delivery for June 19.

  • I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average ?

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

  • Just ordered MBP!

Hi guys! I just ordered my MBP last night! Yay!
It's the 2.2GHz i7 with the 1GB AMD graphics card. I got Hi-res and 128GB ssd for speed in mind!
According to Apple's pre-sales team the MBP I ordered will be able to run Snow Leopard, if it doesn't, I am going to be in for some headaches or get really lucky and have all of my apps work or be crowned king bug finder for Apple ;-)
Apple pre-sales also said the MBP's are shipping with Lion so hopefully I won't run into the upgrade headaches people are having... I just hope I have some sort of disk/flash media in the box to start fresh from.
I don't run any PPC apps, I use a wide variety of stuff (filemaker 11, CS5, VNC, Wireshark, ARD, Firefox, MacUpdate, 1pass, Teamviewer, evernote, etc.) they work great in SL, just not all of them may run as well on Lion. (checked via roaringapps.com) Will build full list later
What have been your biggest complaints/pet peeves in Lion?

Hang out in the Lion forums and find out:

  • San Diego Locations for Iphone 4 or Just Order ?

I just was wondering if anyone here know if any of the Apple Stores in San Diego may have the Iphone 4 in stock? Or Should I just order online? I don't expect Bestbuy or AT&T to have them. Thanks for any Info.

i called a best buy here in LA... i believe it was tuesday or wednesday. Unfortunately i had to work until about 7pm so it wasnt' till then that i called. They said they HAD gotten about 10 or so in, but were now sold out.. bummer.
I just called 3 walmarts (they open at 8am, it's 830am) and none had gotten any in. I'll be calling all the best buys at 10am when they open. But i heard reports from some best buys last week that they receive theres on tuesdays. (and i also read reports of tuesday, wed, thur, sat)
sorry for the rambling, that being said, call your local best buys everyday at 10am when they open and ask, and be ready to drive there quick!

  • I just ordered my laptop.  Do I have to get virus and other protection added. I always heard you didn't no extra security with Mac but when I took my old laptop for service they said I had several viruses.

I just ordered a new MacBook Air. Do I have to buy virus protection or does it come with it. I took my older macbookmair in for service and was told I had several viruses...some bad. Please help explain the security of buying an apple products

First, concerning virus proection, read this:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg-antivirus/
You do not need to install any anti-virus programs. They will do nothing positive, but will almost certainly end up slowing down the computer.
Second, could you please tell us more about this statement: I took my older macbookmair in for service and was told I had several viruses...some bad. I suspect you were being scammed. The term virus is sometimes used to describe "malware". Perhaps what was on the computer was some other form of malware.
    https://www.emsisoft.com/en/kb/articles/tec120308/
Finally, I personally have used Macs for almost 30 years without ever installing anti-virus software. I am however scrupulous about keeping my Macs free of garbage (like Mackeeper, to name one), adware, and so on.

  • Just ordered new Macbook!

I just ordered a new macbook and I just have a question. I see there are a ton of rsd problems and there are some long waits on repair times. I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is something that is fixed with the new Macbooks that are shipping now, or is this still an issue? Thanks for your help!

Some rumors said that apple silently replacing the heat sink that when it become hot, it expanded and make contact and short the component and caused Macbook to shutdown. Or the heatsink is not that good to absorb the heat and make the MacBook shut down.
A lot of theory up there in this forum, some might be true and some just plain speculation (which is actually not propriate and allowed in this forum).
But from what I see, later Macbook production user is less in this forum to report their MacBook RSD (I'm not saying there isn't any), and I believe apple really listen and try to prevent it happen again in later production or previous one by creating newer firmware updater and maybe replacing parts to prevent the rsd occur anymore.
So Good Luck and enjoy your MacBook, not to worry with a ton of problem you read for there is a lot more happy user that not bother to post their glorious moment with macbook.

  • Just ordered my ipad

Hello all, I just ordered my ipad yesterday. Im in the 2 to 3 week window. I noticed on my delivery conformation that I had 2 to 3 day shipping. I called apple as I had nor requested this and they said that because it was taking a while for people to get the product that they were doing expedited shipping to get it out faster. Sure glad I didn't pay for it.
What seems to be the consensus, i'm scheduled to ship on 4/26 with a 4/28 delivery. Does anybody think we will get it any earlier?

I also ordered mine on April 5th--shipping out on the 26th and delivery on the 29th.
I've been looking around and some people are getting their iPad 2 as early as a week, others a day earlier than their original shipping-date.
There's a rumour going around that the next batch of iPad 2 will be shipping out on April 21st. So, maybe you'll be getting yours by the 23rd or 25th.
