Just Ordered a new 12 core 3.06 Mac Pro

I was wondering If I will be able to use the drives from my early 2008 Mac Pro inside the new one? Drive bay 1 will have an SSD.

They are all 3.5" the sleds are different length, the drives of course are just same old standard size.
The OS on new system will have 10.7.4 at least though so that means no Rosetta of course and all that goes withit.
By default boots 64-bit mode, yours could I am pretty sure (2008) Should notice the difference in very large apps.

  • Ordered a New 8 Core - OWC Memory OK?

I finally bit the bullet and ordered the new 8 core Mac Pro.
I need more memory, and while I normally do Crucial.com I used OWC in this case because it was substantially cheaper. I was able to get 4GB of OWC for less than the cost of 2GB from Crucial!
This is my first time to deviate from Crucial and I am a little nervous about it. Can anyone assuage my fears and share some experiences with OWC ram?

I ordered a new 4 core Mac Pro. I ordered TechWorks memory based on OWC reputation for support and much positive commentary about the TechWorks memory.
BTW, there is lots of information already in the forum about owc memory easily found with a search like this: mac pro memory owc.

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

  • Just ordered my new quad!

    Hi All,
Well now I am a convert (from windows xp). Just ordered my new quad and picked up 2x1gb sticks of kingston memory.
So besides Final Cut Studio, what else should I tack onto my CC?

Not sure what you're going to be doing with your time and your equipment, but we do commercials, pop spots and cinema. So, since you're posting in the FCP forums, I'll keep it FCP related.
    FCP Rescue
Very handy application that backs up your (working) FCP preference files and restores them in the event of a visit from Murphy.
    Video Scopes
Better, standalone version of digital video scopes which examine the entire picture area.
    MPEG Streamclip
Extremely useful formats conversion application which above all allows you to demux VOBs.
    JES Deinterlacer
    Handy standalone standards convertor.
    Omni Disk Sweeper
Useful applicaction that scans your drive by file size and allows you to clean up long forgotten huge files. (Oxymoron?)
    Graphic Converter
Whilst you can do a lot in Photoshop, GC is a great, scriptable, batchable tool for multiple image conversions etc.
All of those are free or shareware. Handy full price software:
    Compression Master
Useful for producing WMV and other content on your Mac which Compressor might not handle.
    Shake
I know, I know. But you know what, despite being infinitely profound and complex to work with for the first three days, once you get the hang of it it is an efficient and scalable tool which will let you run:
    Furnace
From The Foundry. An outrageous set of utilitarian plugins which perform little miracles.

Oops, forgot to add, you can find more of the shareware stuff at http://www.macupdate.com/

I just created a new profile/user on my MacBook Pro. My pointer/mouse on my trackpad. It works fine in my older user profile, but when I go to the new profile my mac will not respond to clicks. The Mouse moves but will not click. Already tried restarting and the pram zap. The problem starts when I log out of my main profile. I get to the login screen and my laptop stops responding to clicks. When I manage to make my way back to my main profile the mouse works perfectly.  Should I just delete the new profile and try again?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • How fast is the new Mac Pro 8 core comparred to Mac Pro 4 core?

    Hi,
I consider to update my 1.5 year old Mac Pro 2.66 ghz (4 core) to a Mac Pro 8 core. I use this machine as the center in my studio running Logic 8. I use a lot of V.I. and plugs.
Can anyone tell me anything about the gain in performance that is possible upgrading to an 8 core?
Or show me where to find information. MacWorld use to be my resource in that kind of matters, but they never use Logic as a test program.
    Thanks in advance!

    Glenn,
The new Mac Pro will be faster at everything when compared to your older PowerMac, but I think the first 2 items you list will be more dependent upon drive speed.
    1. The FSB and memory are faster in the new Mac Pro, but reading from the CD will only be as fast as the optical drive can handle.
    2. How fast the TIFF file is displayed in the Finder may be more dependent upon the read speed of the hard drive than the processing speed required to create the thumbnail view displayed by the Finder.
    3. Working in CS3 should definitely be faster. Even though you didn't want a response that linked to a test, the following BareFeat test should show how much faster CS3 is on the new Mac Pro.

    It's not a virus.
Quit Safari. Force quit if necessary.

  • New Display Not Working With Mac Pro

I just ordered a new Mac Pro and 24-inch Cinema Display. About 15 minutes ago I plugged everything in and turned it on. Nothing. The screen is blank.
I made sure everything (power cord, Mini Display Port) was plugged in. Still nothing.
    What can I do?

Pardon me if you see this in other places - the problem drove me crazy, and I've read about it all over the place but could not find a definite fix.
I'm using the 24" LED Cinema Display with my new MBP 17 and had the same problem: plug in the monitor's mini DisplayPort and nothing. Sound worked, and my attached USB peripherals (keyboard and mouse) worked fine, but there was no display.
Reboot doesn't fix it. Zapping PRAM doesn't fix it. Reconnecting the DisplayPort doesn't work.
I figured out quickly I had to follow these instructions when using it in "clamshell" mode..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
But that isn't going to apply to your Pro. But somewhere - sorry, I would reference it but can no longer find where I got the suggestion - someone gave me the idea to try deleting preferences files until something changed.
Luckily, I got it on the first try..
Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences -> SystemConfiguration
..and move or delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file.
I plugged the monitor back in and it worked INSTANTLY, like a charm.
There must be a bug somewhere. I swear it worked better in Leopard and started in Snow Leopard, but there seem to be other people reporting the same or a very similar problem on Leopard as well.

  • HT1338 new Apple I bought a Mac Pro, since I got it keeps crashing....all the time!!! It is my first Mac computer and it is horrible!!!!

I bought a new Apple I bought a Mac Pro Retina screen, since I got it keeps crashing ALL the time!!!  This is my first Mac computer and I am hating it!!!  I assume I can take down to the any store and they will replace it??

I have a similar problem, my MBP Retina 15" 6 weeks old crashes and locks-up all the time with just about every application.  I now have gone back to using my old MS XP system, it is much more stable than Mountain Lion OS and Apple hardware.  I use Window-7 at work for last 6 months, not a single crash and/or lock-up.  I'm looking at returning/selling my MBP and getting a Window-8 system, Apple is now building crap hardware and software.  I recommend you consider the same solution.  Good Luck !

I just ordered new iPhones from Verizon. Can I purchase Apple Care on these since I didn't get them directly from Apple?

Yes. See the information here, particularly the "Important Notes":

Since you haven't yet taken delivery of the iPhones I'm not sure how Apple will handle it.

  • Just ordered my new and first mac

As the title says i just ordered my first mac which is the macbook 2.2(white) and 4g of RAM i am switching from a pc users of many years. i hope that i enjoy my macbook as much as i enjoy my iphone!
So you guys love you macbook? tell me why.

+There is a delete key and a back arrow... I think thats good enough.+
Re my post earlier in this thread about the backspace key, I was wrong. On the Apple keyboard, the backspace key is called the "delete" key. It's really the "delete" key that missing IF you're used to using the delete key to delete text/numbers ahead of the cursor. From what I've observed, the only way to delete characters ahead of the cursor is to highlight them and then hit the delete key. Or move the cursor ahead of the characters to be deleted and then backspace them.
I know it's nit-picking, but I'm used to having separate backspace and delete key from my 25 years of DOS/Windows experience. However, I'm getting used to using the delete key for both functions now.
Another feature missing from my MacBook is a HD access light to tell me if my HD is being access when I load something.

  • New purchase - iMac i7 or Mac Pro Quad Core

I'm planning to purchase a new mac and most of the work i do revolves around Aperture. One option is the 27 inch iMac i7 and the other option is the 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem".
I'm hoping to get some advise on the speed aspects of both processors. Not so concerned about the expansion options and any advise or benchmarks on the speed of the processors.
    Cheers.

    Hi msa,
In my opinion the Mac Pro is a much better buy than an iMac. Much more flexibility for the future, and a real "workhorse"! If you buy an iMac, I am pretty sure that you will regret your decision in the long term.
If you have not already done so, then I recommend that you should read Lloyd Chambers very thorough review (31 pages) of the latest Mac Pros:

With particular emphasis on this page:

  • Windows Vista 64 bit w/older 2 dual core 3.0ghz Mac Pro with NVIDIA 7300

I have read a variety of the posts that have appeared here on the use of Windows Vista 64 bits on a Mac Pro. I remain confused, and but want to do this. I have a Mac Pro purchased in the Spring of '07 with dual 3.0Ghz dual core Xeon cpus and 10gb of ram, using the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and running 10.5.1, with multiple drives. I want to run the 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate to use my ram, and to gain the performance this box should offer. It appears that I have three options:
    1. Boot Camp: I don't know if the drivers are available, seems like the new Mac Pro drivers probably would not work, even if I could find them, since I have an older Mac Pro with a pair of the dual core Xeon CPUs. Don't know if there is an alternate source than Apple for the drivers, or a way to get around the problem in boot camp.
    2. Parallels: I do not believe that 64 bit apps are supported by Parallels
    3. Fusion: Their web site says they support Win Vista 64 bit, but it is not clear to me on the web site where the drivers are obtained, or perhaps they are built in to Fusion. Will I get the performance and memory benefits in fusion? Or is the OSX virtual overhead so high that this is a fools errand?
I do a lot of video editing, and fully 95% of my life is in the Mac world, but I have individuals who send files for editing, and occasionally they require Windows tools, much to my chagrin. I also have a small number of programs that need Windows 64. I occasionally am required to do some development work, and would like to use this machine for that purpose if it can indeed run Win Vista 64bit. I have XP loaded on a more modest box andit is running fine when I need it, which isn't very often.
Any help, or successful experience in running Windows Ultimate 64 bit on this hardware, utilizing its resources would be greatly appreciated.

Here are my results after further digging online and from my own experience.
    Here is the procedure:
    1. Check whether your Mac has the 32-bit EFI or 64-bit EFI
    http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/08/snow-leopard-106-and-64-bit-what-you-need-to- know/
    2. Create a Boot Camp (BC) partition for Windows 7 x64. Resize the partition size using the slider in the BC app. Follow the instruction, insert the Windows 7 disk and reboot.
    3. This will load the PC partition which is FAT formatted for now. Choose the Boot Camp partition on which to install Win 7, but choose in the option to format that partition. It will automatically format it in NTFS. Otherwise, it will not install on that partition.
Note : A "OEM System Builder" Windows 7 64-bit Professional UPGRADE install without any issues what so ever. The upgrade disk is a full install. Read this for further information:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/174288/windows7_upgrade_madecheaper.html
    4. Run windows, then insert the Snow Leopard disk. It will tell you your hardware cannot support x64 version. Do the following procedure to manually install the driver:
    http://michael.anastasiou.me/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=22%3Aq boot-camp-x64-is-unsupported-on-this-computer-modelq-solution&catid=7%3Ahow-to&l ang=en
    5. Then update Boot camp using Apple Software Update in Windows.
    6. All hardware works fine except the sound. The sound only comes out of the internal speaker, even when headphone or speakers are plugged in the jack. Installing the Realtek High Definition Audio Codecs driver in order to fixe the problem. Shutdown and reboot to make it applicable. Try a second time if it still does not work:
    http://218.210.127.131/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Le vel=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
    That's it.
