Just ordered MSI Neo Platinum 250GB from dabs.co.uk, got a few Q's...

Well, first post at my future forum seeing as i've just ordered an MSI Neo Platinum from dabs.co.uk (never usually order from there, was the only place it was listed).  By the looks of things, it's not going to be out for a week or so (keeps saying 3-4 days on site) so I might as well ask a bit about it to whet my appetite.  Sorry if this stuff has been asked before...
Is it very possible that MSI will release a BIOS update to go higher on the ole FSB than 300Mhz... say 350Mhz?
Also, is 2.85 the max voltage that can ever be given to us without a volt-mod... could a BIOS update theoretically offer more or is that the limit?  and i'm planning on running 10*245 at least with my watercooling, and it's just not enough for high FSB with BH-5...
And lastly, i'm thinking of trying a few different types of memory with the thing in search of best performance, is it tru that the NF3 and A64 performs well with higher latency PC4000+ memory, and also using a 5:4 divider like P4's?
That'll do for the mo, hope someone can get me up to speed.  Oh and one last thing, and ETA on when the board will be released to suppliers in the UK?  I've got the CPU but no mobo... arrrghh!   :D
Regards,
Rich.

Well, I haven't had to mess with memory timings at all. I've tried four different brands of memory and they've all worked. Kingmax MPXC22D, Kingston KVR400X64C25, Infineon PC3200, and one other - Samsung I think. Right now I'm running 2~512 sticks of double-banked Infineon. The Athlon64 3000+ is an awesome CPU. I thought my Barton 2500+ was fast. This makes that one seem ssssllllllooooowwwww.  I've had my system up and running for a couple months now, with only a BIOS flash problem to talk about. It is a very stable, fast machine. Anyhow, I'm also waiting for the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and the Athlon 3400+ w/512Mb Cache (Newcastle), or the newer 3700+.

  • K8N Neo Platinum - Wake from Hibernate, WOL & MB Backplate - Issues

What can I say. This board has so many frustratingly annoying issues I'm wondering if I've just made a horrible mistake. I got this board for my HTPC hoping it would prove more stable than my Abit KV8 Pro. But stability has become the least of my concerns.
    1. A HTPC must be quiet. I have a Zalman 7000B AlCu which is excellent. But the CPU mount backplate on the K8N is *glued* to the motherboard! I can't imagine why anyone would think glueing this thing instead of going with the standard method (held in place by the screws) was a good idea, because it's not. Now I have to void the warranty by taking the backplate off to install the Zalman, because even with the Fanmate at the lowest setting, the stock AMD cooler is too loud (in a whiny sort of way).
If I use a fan forced heater (on minimal heat) to heat up the backplate (this will also heat up the rest of the motherboard), will the glue just melt and the backplate come off cleanly? Or will I be stripping off PCB tracks all over the place?
    2. A HTPC must be ready to wake up quickly to deal with program recording. The Webscheduler program can wake up a PC from sleep to commence recording. But the K8N Neo Platinum can't seem to wake up from hibernate (or when shutdown) with a keypress or mouse click even though I've enabled these options in the BIOS. I use a wireless KB & Mouse, but the receiver plugs in to the KB & Mouse PS2 ports (not USB). This worked flawlessly with the Abit board.
Any ideas? Having to get up, go to the HTPC, and press the power button just to wake it up from hibernate is stupid.
    3. The HTPC must wake up when somebody tries to connect remotely to the Webscheduler program. I have port forwarding setup on the router. When I connected to the HTPC remotely using my previous Abit KV8 Pro board, the HTPC would wakeup (from hibernate) and within a short time I would be connected. But allowing the MSI board network to wake the PC results in the thing waking up every minute or so (I assume it's either router activity or some other quirk of the MSI board). This didn't happen with the Abit board.
How do I set up the board to behave like my Abit KV8 board did?
    4. In fact, there seems to be so little in the way of power management options in the BIOS that I'm wondering if perhaps the BIOS is half cooked or something. I have version 1.4 (so LiveUpdate tells me). Would a BIOS update help? LiveUpdate says I can download 1.6.
    Thanks.

i've no particular interest in wake up technology but my neo platinum wakes up immediately i touch key or mouse, always has so i guess i'ts not bios based.
Is this wake from S1 or S3 state, or wake from hibernate? As I understand it, the PC is off when it is hibernating. The BIOS options only provide for the ability to wake up from sleep using the mouse/keyboard. There are no options to turn on the PC using the mouse/keyboard. I know the nForce3 250GB can do it, because I have a Soltek K8AN2E+ board in my other machine, which does allow me to wake from the off-state.
At the moment, continuous pressing of keys and clicking the mouse does absolutely nothing. It wakes the machine up from sleep (non hibernate) but not from hibernate or power off.
Do any MSI reps frequent these forums? Can they tell me specifically whether the MSI Neo Platinum does have the ability to turn on the PC using the mouse or keyboard, as opposed to merely waking it up from sleep? If this board cannot do this (and it would be one of the very few that can't), then it's useless to me. Having to walk up to the HTPC machine in the lounge room just to turn it on is counterproductive.

  • MSI Neo Platinum and G.skill Ram

Was just wondering if anybody had this combination (MSI K8N Neo Platinum and G.skill Ram). I have the MSI Neo Platinum. I ordered the processor yesterday (3400 1Mb socket 754) and now I need some ram. I ran across this ram and saw that it had good timings. If anyone has this or has tried it please lemme know how it worked for you and what size sticks you got. Thanks
                                                               Karl

looked at the links you provided
specs seem ok nice range of speeds and can run at a nice low latency at pc3200 i.e 400mhz.
should also enable a nice o`clock at pc 4400 specs ie 3.4.4.8 ie higher fsb etc.
    than pc 3200 ram
you should be able to run it at fairly low latencies and fairly high fsb sort of half way between the 2.
might well be worth a try you might have found something good there. but then again you wont know till you try it..
contact the reseller and see if you can rma it if it wont run
then you got some comeback if it aint compatable..
    keep us informed

  • MSI Neo Platinum questions

    Hi I am new here
Here is the stuff i got
    MSI Neo Platinum
    Athlon 64 3200 (clawhammer) CG
    Zalman CNPS7000A  ALCU
    corsair xms 3200 1gb
    maxtor sata diamondmax9
My zalman came in a retail box but, the backplate was not included, so i went ahead and installed it on the MSIs backplate. It seemed like a good fit and sits well now. When i powered the computer the CPU temp was showing about 64C. I wasnt too worried and went ahead and updated the BIOS to v 1.2. So now the temp is around 45C. Is this a good temp for A64?
Also another problem that i sometimes having is that when i power down the computer and then power it back on it just hangs in bios (that was happening in both 1.1 and 1.2 bioses) It where it says Identifying devices... or something like that. But this only happenes sometimes, and i can ctrl alt del to restart computer and it boots all fine. What I am going to do is connect those LEDs and see what they show when that happens. But for now anyone heard or had something like this happen ?
But other than these 2 things right now everything runs smothly, all benchmarks work well and system is stable.

ok man this whole thing really got me interested how come i fitted that thing on....
so i looked through zalman instructions i got, the backplate is not even part of the contents. And then it hit me, I got the Zalman CNPS7000 ALCU not Zalman CNPS7000A ALCU "A" after 7000 is the difference. Quick visit to http://www.zalmanusa.com resulted in .... the A version supports more sockets, but overall they are the same thing, thats why mine didnt come with a backplate. http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=41&code=005009
now how come it fit and 7000A needs its own backplate to fit is interesting as they look identical.
to answer ur question SAB i just used the 2 nipples that came with my zalman. Stays on pretty solid.

  • HELP : MSI Neo Platinum - VERY unstable

I am sorry if this has been asked, or if it some real dumb newbie question - please bear with me.
I have just received my nice new very tasty Neo Platinum (think its the platinum - has firewire port and 4 SATA??) and lovely new AMD64 3000+ CPU - jump from my little old AMD XP 2400+
Anyway, whenever I have changed boards in the past, I have just entered into the device manager, set all the chip branded items to standard - e.g VIA host controller to standard host controller - it is far from best way but always seems to work without any problems for me - Next time system boots, it finds all new hardware and all the standard stuff is usually automatically identified fine. Sometimes I might have to right click on something and tell it to update the driver - and it finds what it needs job done.
I know it aint fail-safe - but it works for me
    Until today
I changed everything to standard, powered down, did my upgrades plugged it all in and powered up - system did as I expected - almost, it ran fine for about 40 minutes - I was not using it, I just turned it on, watched it update the drivers and then left it.
I then turned machine off (about 40 mins later) and turned back on - since then I have not had a stable system at all.
My first thoughts where this is my fault - I am not going to get away with such a half ass upgrade this time - but the system is extremely unstable - and some times long before it gets to windows.
For example - a few moments ago I spent about 10 minutes trying to get into the BIOS - I got the splash screen, I pressed DEL to enter BIOS and system restarted.
I really don't think it is the way I am preforming the update I think there is a problem somewhere - but not sure were - any tips?
The one area I am pretty unsure of is the power supply - going by some  of the stuff I have read at this site - I think it may be this.
the sticker on the side shows the 12v rail as 17a
If this is not high enough (why?) would it explain why the system keeps crashing - oh and when I say crashing I mean it just turns off and imediately tries to power back up - sometimes it gets stuck in a loop, and I just have to turn it off completely.
If the power supply is the cause, then why can I get all the way into Windows some times and it gladly works for a max of about 10-15 mins before powering down again - yet other times it can not even get passed the POST?
Oh when I can get into Windows - If I look at the event viewer there are no messages - so I definately don't think it is a problem with my hardware - except the power supply.
in fact as I am writing this I am going more and more for the power supply been the cause - no errors in the event viewer - you see that if the system just lost power - eg power cut.
If it is the power supply the ratings where not given before I purchased the item from ebuyer - are they at fault - e.g. will I get my money back - does any one know?
AND if what I have read is true - this CPU needs a PSU that can supply 25a+ on the 12vg rail - where would I get one of them - I looked around and I can not see a PSU with that sort of spec - well in the budget end of the market??
    Sorry for essay
    Dave

    thanx for the suggestions people.
I read the suggestions and went down to a computer store in Bristol earlier today.
I purchased a hyper..... (can't remember name and currently not at home - this one is AMD 64 approved.
The 12v rail says maximum 26a so I would expect my problems to have cleared up...
    BUT NO.
It booted into Windows and appeared to be stable at first, Windows told me it had detected the Nvidia ata controller or something like that -  have got this far countless times before - but the computer would usually restart before it had chance to update the drivers - this time it seemed to work.
It found new hardware and I let it search for the best driver, it didn't seem to be able to find it on the disc that came with the MOBO?? and asked me for the location, I went through the disc, found the file it wanted - it then continued trying to install the drivers before telling me that there was an error instaling the driver, it does not support my processor.  A little odd.
then the system powered down again, it rebooted all the way to Windows and was fine again for about 10 r so minutes and again it restarted.
Maybe its my upgrade method, but I definately think that power is no longer the problem - I wonder ifI have a dodgy board?
So far I have tried the RAM in different slots, a different stick of RAM, a different Graphics card, with my fans and ALL USB devices disconnected - I have 2 optical drives so I have tried disconnecting one, and then disconnecting the other - but always keeping one connected - I am getting no further. - Oh and I have obviously changed to a more expensive apparently AMD approved PSU
Do I have a duff board or CPU I am wondering - I can't test either seperately as I don't know anyone else with a 754 processor or board.
purchased through the internet so reluctant to send both items back for them to test as ebuyer take about 2 weeks to test things you send bac and they charge you if they are working - nice of um.
A couple more things I could test - let me know if you think either of these could be the problem:
Gonna pop home and change the SATA drive for an old IDE drive and atempt a fresh install of windows maybe SATA drive is telling system to do something it doesn't want to do??
I have a clear case, the case has fairly big mobo standoffs, enough for me to channel my IDE cables under the board for a tidier looking system - I have my 2 opticals on seperate channels but both ide cables run under the CPU - is there any chance that interference could cause random problems like this? - I don't think so my self - and if so I would expect to see at least a BSOD.??
otherwise unless any of you helpful people have any other suggestions I think I am gonna have to pay for both items to go back.
    Cheers
    Dave
PS: from what I remember system spec:
    AMD 3000+ 64 bit CPU
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    ATI Radeon 9600 (Abit - 256Mb)
    512Mb Viking DDR400 RAM
    120Gb Western Digital SATA HDD
    Sony 8x DVD+- RW
    LG 16x DVD ROM
Creative Sound Blaster Live (have tried removing this as well)
PPS: tried HDD connected to SATA 1 and 3 - no effect

  • MSI Neo platinum no bass

Hi. I know there are other threads about this but they have not been answered with something that helped (at least not me).
    Question:
How do get bass on my integrated soundcard (for MSI k8n Neo Platinum)?
Before I used the integrated soundcard in SOYO k7v Dragon+ and I really liked it. I cant imagine that this can be so much worse. I really cant use this soundcard. I get a headache if I try.
So I cant believe its just bad quality soundcard. It has got to be something wrong. Or..?
As reference I also used Hercules Gamsurround Fortissimo II before (cant get it to work now). No problems with the quality there either.
If it's supposed to sound like this, then I can't understand why they have optical output on the soundcard. Its WAY worse then my Ipod and my headphones to the PC is much better then the Ipod's.
    any help out there?

I've also got the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum board, and newly i got a surround sound speaker set, and when i connect it to the soundboard, all lines works except the subwoofer/center line. It doesn't play at all when playing music, but when i use the integreted soundtest in the surroundsystem all speakers play as they should.
But when i use the nvidia sound config it doesn't play at all. The VU metres for the two lines is also at the bottom.
Very strange and i dont think its a setup problem, because i used the inbuilt guide and so on

  • I just ordered an iPad 4 32gb from Amazon but sold by a store called iPadShop.  In the customer reviews there were several reports of this store selling used and refurbished iPads as new.  How can i verify mine is new and not used when it arrives.?

Ok, first time here, so forgive me if Im repeating the question.  I just ordered a NEW iPad 4 32gb from Amazon, but is actually being sold by a seller called "iPadShop". Although this seller got a high approval rating of 4.9 there were several reports of customers receiving used and refurbished iPads but sold as new.  Once I receive mine how can I verify it is new.  Also, even the ones that were new were purchased by this seller and then resold, which shortened the life of the 1 year warranty offered by Apple..?

If you just ordered it, I suggest you cancel your order as soon as possible. If you can't contact Amazon, call your credit card company and cancel payment on that. Why go through worrying about the ipad you are paying for as new? If it's to save money, then that can be defeated if you get a used or refurbished ipad with a less than full one year warranty. You'll be dealing with the ipad shop's return policy which could mean that once you open it, it's yours, unlike when you buy from Apple you have a full 14 days to return it even if you've opened it.
I looked at Amazon and did not see a price difference. If cost led you to buy from Amazon, what are you saving?
I suggest you buy it directly from Apple. If cost is an issue, consider buying a refurbished ipad from the Apple online Refurbished store. I would not buy a refurbished anything from anywhere but the Apple online refurb store.
The ipad 4 32 gb is $499.00 refurbished - a savings of $100.00 vs. a new one. We bought two ipads last year and one as a gift this year and they have been great!
All ipads sold in the Apple refurb store come with new front and back covers, a brand new battery, a full one year warranty, and in case it matters, come in a new white Apple box like all ipads do. Earphones and charger are also included. You can also get the new Apple Care +, which insures up to three breakages (damaged glass, water damage, etc.) in two years.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dear Creative, I just ordered your X-Fi bundle from newegg, does it have the breakout b

From what i can tell, the x-fi elite pro comes with an external box. This claims to be?2 retail products, so I ordered it assuming it would be included but now dont see itin the pics.
If this is retail, how is it not included?
    It may be false advertising?

  • What we need to see in the next Neo Platinum 250GB BIOS revision.

We need 0.5 increments in the LDT speeds, and 0.5 multipliers too, there's no reaosn for not including them seeing as other boards have them, and all you're doing is limiting our overclocking options and therefore our enjoyment of the board...
Anyone else got any ideas for what we need to see in the next BIOS?

MSI PLEASE SORT THE TEMP READINGS OUT! Sorry for caps but this is beyond a joke.
    K8T + 3200 @ 2.32ghz 1.61v = 46C load
    K8N + 3200 @ 2.24ghz 1.56v = 61C load!!!!!!!
    Thats just insane.

Have you partitioned and formatted it?
If it's not formatted, windows won't see it.
In XP, start run and type diskmgmt.msc
When Disk Management opens, a wizard may appear entitled: Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard.
Note: You must use this wizard to write a Signature to the drive otherwise, the drive will not work with Windows XP. If the wizard does not appear, you may need to manually complete this process following the steps below
Right click on the name of the drive to be initialized. (Drives are numbered as follows: drive 0 being the boot drive and drive 1-3 are all other drives. For CDs, the first CD is CD 0 the second CD 1 and so forth.)
Choose Initialize from the menu that appears.
The next screen shows the drive you selected to initialize. Make sure the drive is checked and click Next.
You will have the option to convert the drive from basic to dynamic storage.
Leave this unchecked and click Next.
    Click Finish
    Err here.
I suppose you are on XP?

  • Just bought SATA2 250GB WD HD for MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).

I just bought a SATA2 250GB Western Digital HD for my MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).
I'm currenlty using the 1.7 BIOS.
I've always used IDE up to this point.
I haven't yet installed my new drive but I'm a little nervous.
Are there any gotchas waiting for me?
What I want to do is copy my partitions from my old IDE HD to my new SATA2 HD.
Something tells me that this is not going to go so smoothly - don't ask me why, it's gut feeling
I predict BSOD when I try to boot from my new HD.
Any advice from people who have done this using the MSI Neo Platinum 1 ?
Can you have both IDE and SATA drives connected at the same time so that I can do a partition copy?
I think that MSI Neo Plat 1 is only rated do SATA1 so I'm not sure how it'll behave with my SATA2 drive
I'm a pessimist by nature, however, my "gut" instints are normally correct

I don´t have the same MoBo as you, so there might be some differences which I´m not aware of, but basically you could install the Sata drive as new bootdrive with OS and keep the old Pata HDD as backup drive.
The Sata installation (not raid) is just like a Pata installation except for other cables and MoBo connectors/IF.
To avoid confusion, disconnect the power from the old HDD and just keep the new Sata drive as the only drive while formatting / installation OS.
You will only benefit native Sata1 performance, but that almost the same as Sata2 so no big deal ( only the theoretically performance is twice as good ).
I don´t think there´s no need to change any backward Sata1-2 jumpers on the WD drive, but if I´m wrong there should be such a jumper that limits the performance to Sata1 - You could check at WD website.
After you´ve reconnected the old HDD - Go into bios ( probably "Advanced" menu ) and set " HDD Boot drive" order ( or called simular ), check and set WD as bootdrive.( don´t mix up HDD boot order with the general Floppy/CD/HDD bootorder).
Now you still have all your files intact on the old HDD and if you want to, you could ofcourse transfer them to the new drive as well.
( You will need to reinstall some programs on the new HDD, that does not work anylonger on the old HDD, but all files are intact)

I've been looking some at the ASUS K8N-E Deluxe. Is this board a better choice?

I don't think anyone is going to flame you... but I will point this out:
You are over clocking. ? You'll get varied results from any brand.
Like there's some inherent warranty behind overclockability. Give me a break.
I had an ASUS board where a diode EXPLODED and took out a Thunderbird. I handled it with support... like I should have.
    God I hate whiners.
Listen bud, I ain't a whiner, but I say things how I see them and I don't needlessly mince my words, in my job it desn't pay to.  I don't pussy-foot around anyone.  Also, i've been overclocking a long while now, likely far longer then your wee self, and i've used a wide range of motherboards on both the AMD and Intel platforms.
Also, God knows what you're talking about with the "inherent warranty behind overclockability" part as that's not even in context, I made no reference to the warranty, merely on the board's performance and my opinions on MSI.  They weren't offensive, merely informed opinions.
If you're going to attempt a put-down, please try and make it vaguely relevant and remotely intelligent.  Otherwise...
Just for the record, my first overclocked machine was an 80286
lol same here tiresmoke, touche sir.
And SAB I hear you mate, i'm sure you love MSI motherboards, but review after review has shown they are not the best, in terms of stability or overclocking, especially overclocking in fact.  Ask 9/10 reviewers and they would rate ABIT, DFI or ASUS over MSI every time.  But the very fact that I bought an MSI motherboard shows I am willing to give them a chance, and I will wait until the next BIOS update for the NEO Platinum before I make my final judgement on my first ever MSI product.  If the BIOS turns out to be a dud and doesn't solve the many issues with this board, i'll say bye bye forever, as many others no doubt will who have bought the MSI Neo Platinum as their first MSI motherboard, mainly because it was the first Norce3 250GB to be released.

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum - no Qool & Quiet

    hy,
i spend the whole day reading lots of threads about enabling cool&quiet but in my case nothing worked.
    - Athlon 64
    - MSI NEO PLATINUM
    - BIOS 1.4
