Just ordered my Airport Base Station, NOW WHAT?

My APBS should be here in the next day or so. What do I need to know before connecting everything?
P.S. I already have a Belkin router connected.
Here's what I have...
1. iMacG5 iSight 20"
2. iMacG5 20"
(both have Airport card installed)
3. Comcast Broadband Internet (cable modem)
4. i900D Canon printer (prefered printer for the network)
5 i950 Canon printer
Thanks for any guidance in advance...

Congrats on your purchase.
When you receive it, make the following connections:
Modem <-> AEBS <-> Router (plug your AEBS into the LAN port on your router NOT your WAN port, this makes your Belkin act like a switch not a router) <->Wired computer.
Or, if you don't need multi-wired capability, you can leave the Belkin out of the picture
Verify that you have the most recent firmware, then set-up and secure your network.

  • What password (WEP, WAP, WAP2) to choose for Airport Base Station?

    Hi,
I just got an Airport Base Station and now I connect to the Internet wireless with my iMac.
However, I am getting confused how to password protect this wirelss connection so that my neighbors don't use it.
Can someone please explain in basic language, as i am not a computer-geek, how I should do this and what kind of password I should use. WEP, WAP, WAP2 - that's way to confusing for me.
Also I want to get an Apple TV later this month. I heard that the kind of security setting is important for the ATV to function without problems.

WPA2 - Absolute strongest when used with a non-dictionary password (don't use a word from the dictionary as your password). Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA2.
WPA - Nearly as strong as WPA2 when used with a non-dictionary password. Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA.
128 bit WEP - Relatively weak and only recommended if you are using equipment which is not compatible with WPA2 or WPA.
40/64 bit WEP - Extremely weak and only recommended if none of the others is compatible with your equipment.

  • Sky and Airport Base Station setup

    Hi,
I seem to be having all kinds of issues with my Wireless network setup.  So much so that I'm going insane with it all.
Now I don't pretend to be an expert in networking issues, I'm a consumer and I am a designer - I don't do technical stuff.  Hence why I am asking the question here.
But I am a good listener, and I'm hoping to learn how to do this the right way.
    Ok.
I have a router that came with my Sky Broadband, and I have an Airport Base Station which I connect to my Sky Router and broadcast a network from the Airport.
Problem is I think I've messed up settings and it's just on an unbelievable go-slow.
Rather than me try and detail all my settings, what are the ideal settings for something like this?
I'm getting less than 1mb download speeds, when I should be getting closer to 7.
I've got iStumbler installed and i've got like 40% signal with 12% noise.
Now I've just noticed my Airport Base Station is showing a warning icon and that the device is not found.
    Help.

Timothy, you're right... the change to 10.4.8 has had us in "Airport ****" ever since the update. Whenever the PB can't find the Airport Extreme (more than 1/2 the time), we open "Network" in "System Preferences" and it's trying to use a 10.xxx address, instead of the 192.xxx or 168.xxx that it should be using.
Our work-around has been to click the "Configure" Button in the "Network" window and then click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button. This results in a change to the address... to a 192.xxx address, as it should be.
Your post got me to thinking, so I went into the "Airport Admin Utility", selected our Airport Extreme Base Station, and clicked on the "Configure" icon. When I went to the third tab (Network) I saw the "Share a single IP address" was set to use a 10.xxx address! What? So, I changed it to use a 192.xxx since there is no 168.xxx option. I have a feeling this may solve our problem...

  • I deleted Bonjour, since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now I get the message " Airport Base Station has stopped working: and also a message saying APAgent.exe can't be found.  What to do??? Thanks.

I deleted Bonjour since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now on start-up I get the message: "Airport Base Station Agent has stopped working" and also message: "can't find APAgent.exe.:  Do I need AP Agent??  What to do??  Thanks.

The APAgent monitors your AirPort base station and informs you if there are things like firmware updates available. This utility relies on Bonjour, but is not required for base station operation. However, Bonjour makes it easier for your PC to "find" the base station via the AirPort Utility and I would recommend that you keep it installed. If you don't want the APAgent, you can just use the Apple Updater utility (that was also installed when the AirPort Utility was installed) to remove it.

  • I just purchased an extreme.  I have an express.  The sales guy recommended setting up a hot spot with the express and use the extreme as a base station.  What does he mean and how do I do this?  What are the advantages?

I just purchased an extreme.  I have an express.  The sales guy recommended setting up a hot spot with the express and use the extreme as a base station.  What does he mean and how do I do this?  What are the advantages?  How do I set this up?????

I think he means to set up the main extreme as the main router or "main base station", and then use the express to "extend" the network.
You can look up the manual for your express here for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/
Extend the range of your network by adding AirPort Express to your existing AirPortExtreme or AirPort Express wireless network (this is called a Wireless DistributionSystem, or WDS). "
Extending the Range of an Existing AirPort Extreme or
    AirPort Express Network
You can extend the range of an existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wirelessnetwork by setting it up in a WDS. Wireless computers can connect to the network andshare the Internet connection, share files, and play network games. If you connect yourAirPort Express to your home stereo, computers on your wireless network can useAirTunes to play music on the stereo from iTunes. If you connect a USB printer to yourAirPort Express, all of the computers on the network can print to it.
n Open the AirPort Setup Assistant on a Macintosh, or the AirPort Express Assistant on acomputer using Windows XP. Follow the onscreen instructions to extend the range ofyour AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network.
Note: Extending the range of a network using WDS may reduce overall networkperformance.

  • What is the AirPort Base Station Agent?

I just noticed in my Login Items on one of two computers (MacPro, no Airport card) there is an Application called AirPort Base Station Agent. It is checked to be invisible on opening. On my laptop (with Airport) that Application is not listed in Login Items. I never put it there myself as I don't know what it's for. It is located in System Folder/Core Services of both computers but only listed as a startup item in one of them.
Can anyone explain? Should it be added to the laptop login?

  • What kind of password (WEP, WAP, WAP2) to choose for Airport Base Station?

    Hi,
I just got an Apple TV. I am using an Airport Base Station to connect to the Internet wireless with my iMac. So far without any password-protection (very neglectant, I know).
i want to password protect but I am getting confused on how to do this.
Can someone please explain in basic language, as I am not a computer-geek, how I should do this and what kind of password I should use. WEP, WAP, WAP2 - that's way to confusing for me. What should I use so that the ATV is functioning properly?

The tv uses all these types of security, WEP is the weakest and WPA2 is the strongest security. Each allows you to enter varying lengths of passwords, in theory the longer the password the more secure but I wouldn't always say that was true (i.e. '1W3e7' is likely to be more secure than 'password1').
I use WPA2 with an eight character password.

  • I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is flashing and so it is not being recognized.  I have been on the computer and gone to airport utility and it is simply not showing up at all.  What can I do?

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

  • Just got a used airport base station. Set it up and getting wif signal. when I try to hook up on a computer it asks for a security key. where can I locate key?

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password

  • HT1218 I recently updated from O.S. 10.6 to Mountain Lion and had additional memory installed.  Now I can't get my wireless printer to print wirelessly.  I went to Airport utilities as suggested above, but it says it can't locate any airport base station.

I just updated from OS 10.6 to Mountain Lion.  My HPC4780 wireless all-in-one will not print wirelessly, even though it indicates it is getting a wireless signal.  I followd the "airport base station firmware updates" suggestions, but my computer can't detect an airport base station, even though I am looking at it, and the light is green like it is supposed to be.  The printer works if I connect it, but won't print wirelessly.  Any ideas?  I am trying to learn Mountain Lion's ins and outs.

  • Hi, Some one hacked into my AirPort Base Station, which initially I had not secured with password. Now they took control by adding their own password. How can I regain ownership back?

    Hi there,
I have an intruder into my AirPort Base Station wireless connection. The Station initially I did did not protect it with a Password, so the intruder branded it a name and put on a password. Is there any way I can deactivate the intruder's password and regain ownership?
Thanks for your answers in advance.

Some one hacked into my AirPort Base Station.....
No, they did not have to "hack" into your AirPort at all.  Since the door to your wireless network was wide open, they simply walked right in.
Is there any way I can deactivate the intruder's password and regain ownership?
Hold the reset button on the back of the AirPort in for 9-10 seconds, and then release. Allow a full minute tor the AirPort to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
The AirPort is back to new, out of the box settings. You can can now reconfigure it again......hopefully this time with a password.

  • HT1218 My airport express is 10 years old and I get the message that this version of airport utility (6.2) doesn't support my base station? What to do?

My airport express is 10 years old and I get the message that this version of airport utility (6.2) doesn't support my base station? What to do?

    What to do?
    Two Options:
    1) Buy a new AirPort Express, which will be supported.
    2) Try a workaround....not supported by Apple.....to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on the Mac using the Mountain Lion operating system and use the 5.6 application to administer the old AirPort Express.  See this thread for more details:

  • Airport base station, what kind?

A friend gave me a base station with no documents. It is marked Model # M8440 on the bottom. I have tried putting that into searches under manuals to see if I can get a manual but it finds no matches at all.
How do I find out what unit this is, (graphite etc) , and mainly what frequency this thing operates on?? I am buying some other wireless devices (audio/video transmitter) and want to avoid interference.
    Any help would be great!!!

DGKentucky, Welcome to the discussion area!
Does it only have a single Ethernet port? If so it is a graphite AirPort base station (ABS).
If it has 2 Ethernet ports, does it have a printer port? If not, then it is a snow ABS.

  • None of my airport base stations are picked up by my mac- what c

My macbook pro is running OS X Lion 10.7.5 with all updates up to date. I have itunes running 11.0.1. I have two airport base stations and three airport expresses and one of them has speakers comnnected to it. All the airport kit has a green light on it indicating it is connected to the wireless network but airshare does not pick up the speakers. When I open airport utility 6.1 it doesn't find any of the airport base stations or the airport expresses.
I am assuming that the airport kit needs to be updated with new software but without the mac detecting they are there I don't know how to do this.
    Please can anyone help me.

OK, so it's a security issue. My guess is that WEP Transitional, which is available in the 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) setting is not what the PCs want to see.
They need to probably work with either WEP 40 bit or WEP 128 bit ecryption.
These settings are not available in the 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) mode, but they are available in the 802.11 b/g compatible mode. Hold down the option button while you are selecting the Radio Mode and you should see this setting.
For Security, also hold down the option key while you click on the drop down selection box and you will see more choices. Try 128 bit first to see if that will work. The older PC may need to use WEP 40 bit, so that may be the final setting that will work.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to connect with your MacPro at "n" speeds in these settings, but it will be the best available compromise.
