Just ordered my new and first mac

As the title says i just ordered my first mac which is the macbook 2.2(white) and 4g of RAM i am switching from a pc users of many years. i hope that i enjoy my macbook as much as i enjoy my iphone!

Re my post earlier in this thread about the backspace key, I was wrong. On the Apple keyboard, the backspace key is called the "delete" key. It's really the "delete" key that missing IF you're used to using the delete key to delete text/numbers ahead of the cursor. From what I've observed, the only way to delete characters ahead of the cursor is to highlight them and then hit the delete key. Or move the cursor ahead of the characters to be deleted and then backspace them.
I know it's nit-picking, but I'm used to having separate backspace and delete key from my 25 years of DOS/Windows experience. However, I'm getting used to using the delete key for both functions now.
Another feature missing from my MacBook is a HD access light to tell me if my HD is being access when I load something.

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting. On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.

Firefox, Safari, and PhotoShop each handle embedded color profiles differently. For an add-on that makes it easier to experiment with Firefox's color management options, you might be interested in: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/color-management/ Color Management :: Add-ons for Firefox]. If she is using the mail app, there doesn't appear to be a way to sync contacts directly with gmail. You might see if there is a way to export to a Mac desktop and then to use iTunes to sync the contacts to the iPad. Otherwise the contacts will have to be manually added to the iPad. Another option would be to use gmail's web based mail. Her contacts should be available from there.

Yes. There is no Superdrive. You cannot play DVDs or CDs.
You will need to buy an external DVD player/burner. Almost all will do the job, just make sure you can connect it, as your iMac does not have Firewire or USB2 (USB3 is backwards compatible).
Or there is of course the expensive one from Apple.

Yes you can. However, it is better to use one person's account most of the time for purchases in the Mac App Store and iTunes since you can share purchases, such as songs, among various devices using the SAME account. You Cannot share purchases among different accounts, though. So make one of your accounts the main "purchasing" account so you can share purchases.

Ok, so my whole family has the same apple ID so that we can all get the same music, and we want to be able to use icloud so that when one person buys a song it will push to all of our devices. But the problem is when I want my calendar on my mac to also be pushed to my phone it pushes to all of my familys devices. As far as I know they can't be deleted, just remove any personal info from it (credit card details etc) and stop using it.
If you downloaded any content via it then you will need to remember it and it's password, as content is tied to the account that bought/downloaded it, so if you move to a new computer you'll need to authorise the account on it if you want to use any of its content there (or if you bought apps with it you'll only be able to download updates to them via that account)

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:

Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.

Just ordered a MP and need some "set-up" advice...

Like some, I waited all through Nov, and Dec to see if Apple was going to come out with an "octo" configuration and can't wait any longer. I just ordered one through Amazon as well as 2 extra gigs (2x1gb) of RAM from OWC. I will probably be ordering a couple of Maxline Pro 500g for a RAID 0 drive.
I am upgrading from a REV A iMac G5 and a MDD dual 1.25 G4. I use my iMac for design software (PS, AI etc.) and the G4 for FCS and iTunes. I have an extra 250gb HD in the G4. In addition I have a 250g external (usb 2...yuk) drive and another external 500g FW800 Lacie drive that I use for backups and an occasion PS scratch disk.
Does anyone have any reccomendations on a good configuration for design and Final Cut work using my existing equip? I.E. Should I keep the music on the G4, or use it as a backup? I have been doing so much research since the MacPro's came out that my head feels like it's gonna blow.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
P.S. If Apple releases the "Octo Mac" at Macworld, I'm gonna slit my wrists.

Of course we're not allowed to speculate here on these forums, but last I heard (SPECULATION!!!) was that the octo will be an upgradeable solution to those of us who have the current MacPros... but don't count on what I say - PLEASE!!
Anyway -- I've been trying to hang onto my G4 as a seperate and controlable tower for a while... I must say - I'm going to finally get rid of it asap. Few things to keep in mind...
You need SATA drives in the MacPro - I'll wager your G4 has ATA drives. Don't work in the MacPro - EXCEPT you can slide it in your lower optical bay under the DVD drive and link it there... it's an ATA bus thingie.
Here's what I did... I bought a bunch of 320gig drives for about 100us and hooked the two machines up via Gigabite ethernet. Then, just copied the files to the new drives. And actually -- speed was fast enough that I was able to run FCS with the media on the network drives. Workable solution for the short term.

Just purchaed a new 2.66ghz mac pro, have a few questions

Hey guys, i've been finally reading the forums a bit trying to wet my appetite for the new mac pro arriving today via fedex.
I bought the 2.66 quad with the 7300 video card, 1gb ram and 250gb hd. I bought this from apple refurb for $2100. I already purchased an addition 500gb perpendicular hd. I can get ram cheap, so im not to worried about that. Here are my questions:
1) I have a westinghouse 37" lcd 1080p monitor (1900x1080 res) Will the 7300 be enought to drive this monitor?
2) i had a standard logitech surround sound witht he 3 wire setup, i know the mac pro has toslink, so i bought logitech z5500 setup that has the dolby digital and toslink built in. Will this work witht he mac pro without any problems and is it a good set of speakers?
3)My needs for the mac are pretty simple, music, photos, video conversion and editing, internet, and light gaming. Do you think the 2.66 will be enough, or should i go with the 8 core? I think the 8 is overkill, but i am new to macs so thats why im here!!

Hi Ultravox. I just got the same rig as a refurb, tax free no less due to this being my state's tax holiday. Good call on the memory as I just ordered my extra from Crucial a few days ago and it's already here - and WAY cheaper than Apple's.
My 2 cents, the nVidia card gets a pretty bum wrap. While it's true the ATI would be better for gaming, I don't think it will make any difference for straight video editing that is, without a lot of realtime motion effects. To the extent you have such you can just render to view, which will be really fast with these CPU's. I've looked at all the benchmarks and what it means for games is to get playable frame rates on some of the 3D titles you will have to lower the resolution. Not ideal, but I think acceptable for a light duty gamer. I have to do this now on my G4, which has an even less capable video card than the 7300. I considered buying a new 2.0 GHz machine and getting the ATI as a custom option (if new) or add-on kit (if a refurb), but decided I could live with the 7300 for a year or so and upgrade later. To get the 2.66 with the ATI would have busted my budget. For long-term use, the processor upgrade is worth more, since graphics cards change constantly and can be upgraded easily. It may also be that Apple comes out with some more graphic card options going forward, as I'm not that thrilled with some of the complaints I read on how noisy the ATI can be. It would be nice to have an option in between the nVidia 7300 and the ATI. Here is a fairly positive review of the 7300, although, admittedly not being used for any gaming.

Need a RAID that will work on both new and old Mac Pro

Desperately need to expand my RAID storage, and also not quite ready to buy the new Mac Pro. Are there any high quality 6TB+ RAID enclosures that will work on both the new and older non-firebolt Mac Pros? I already have a sh*t load of 2TB 3.5 drives, so I only need an enclosure.
Even when i get the new macpro, I will use the old mac pro as a second station, so i need the RAID to work on both.

Why not go for a eSATA Raid and a cheap eSATA card for old Mac Pro and get either a Thunderbolt to eSATA or USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter for your new Mac Pro? Thunderbolt to eSATA is faster, of course.
I have a MacPower/Inxtron Hydra 4 x 2 TB eSata for example. I have a eSATA card in my Mac Pro and when I need to use it on my Retina Macbook Pro I use a USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter. Gives me about 240 MBytes/s with Raid 5.
On the eSATAcard it's just a little bit more, like 250/260 MBytes/s.
