Just purchased first mac, (Mini) did I forget anything?

Hey Guys,
I am a windows user, want to play with the Mac. I just bought a Mac Mini 80gig superdrive unit. I ordered a mac keyboard, apple support, and the M-Audio FastTrack Recording Interface to record my instruments.
I expect to buy a regular usb mouse (is ths possible or has to be an apple mouse?)
Also what would be the best way to switch the monitor between my pc and the mac? I am aware of KVM's but not sure how the Monitor ONLY solution will work!
Please help and offer any advice, I am VERY excited about getting my hands on this thing!

Arnold,
Before I got my Apple Cinema Display I shared a TFT between the mini and my iMac. I bought a cheap, mechanical KVM-switch and just connected the TFT and both computers. Each computer used it's own keyboard and mouse. Worked like charme.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

Hello, I've just purchase a mac mini 10.9 it doest have a cd drive and so I can't install my Photoshop Elements 4.0.  How can I update/upgrade Adobe and in stall in my computer?

that's no longer available for download.  in addition, it's unlikely it would work on your mavericks os.
you could purchase pse 12 upgrade, Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 - Buying guide

  • I just purchased a mac mini and wondered if it's safe to download the Kobo reader app. can I download things from the internet that are not available in the apple store?

I just purchased a mac mini and wondered if it's safe to download from the internet (such as Kobo) that are not available on the app store. It asked me if I was sure it was safe, so it's got me worried.

If you know the sites are OK, then download away.

  • I just puchased a Mac Mini. I have to have a working web cam. The reviews I've been reading don't sound promising. How do I make it happen?

I just purchased a Mac Mini. I HAVE to have a working web cam. I've been reading web cam reviews and I haven't found one that has a Mac driver. It sounds like the performance on Macs are bad. 2 of the reviews are positive. If I understood it right, one guy made some settings changes on his comp. to make it work. I'm new to Macs and can hardly believe that Mackintosh hasn't produced a single portable web cam in all the years they've been in use.

Actually I'm pretty sure that Apple did produce a webcam, tho' it was some years ago.  Most USB webcams should work fine. If you HAVE to have one, and know that it will work, then get an Apple Cinema Display or Thunderbolt Display - price tags are pretty hefty tho'!

  • I have just purchased a mac book pro. I't will not boot and the keyboard is broken. Also it did not come with an install disc. It's a 2011 13" mac book pro. Any guidance would be appreciated. This is my first mac.

This suggests that your HDD may be corrupt.  In order to try and repair it, we must get into the recovery partition or use the original installation disks.  Try and start your MBP using COMMAND R.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
If that works, note the 4 option menu.  Select Disk Utility>First Aid and verify and repair the disk.
If COMMAND R fails, try OPTION COMMAND R.  If that works, try the same as above with Disk Utility.
If neither works, it suggests that your MBP came with Snow Leopard.  You will need replacement disks which can be ordered from Apple customer service.  Have the serial number of the MBP handy and there is a charge.
    Ciao.

  • I have just update my mac mini server to OX Yosemite, but now the iTunes is not working at all.

I have just updated my Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) to OS Yosemite ver 10.10, after the update, iTunes is not working, and i have tried to reinstall iTunes over and over again but it was not successful , please advise if you have a solution or share similar problems. Thank you.

You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download iTunes 10.7 or 11.  The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.
The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Want to purchase new mac mini but I do not know how I would install programs from dvd without internal optical drive

I am planning to purchase new mac mini that just came out today but I do not know how I will be able to install programs or save stuff to disk when there is now internal optical drive.  I know I could purchase an external drive but is that necesary. Thanks.

If you have access to another Mac with an DVD drive you should be able to share it using Apple's drive sharing feature in the OS or at the very least if you have a firewire cable boot into firewire disk mode...

  • I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

The base mini has 4GB and a 5400 RPM hard drive. It is slow to start up and slow to launch large application such as Word (and I'd assume Adobe Audition) due to the slow drive. I've not used a new 4GB model, just the 8GB model, and the 8GB model (except for the slow drive) handles everything I've thrown at it, including running Photoshop, Word, Safari, and Mail at the same time but there is sometimes a delay switching between programs as the swapfile is updated. Overall I was not happy with the 5400 RPM drive (perhaps because I have MBA and iMac with Fusion drive) so I eventually upgraded it with an SSD. Now the mini is truly a warrior.

  • I have just purchased a Mac Book Pro. I would like to find the list of all updates and downloads that have occurred since purchase. Where can I find that info?

I have just purchased a Mac Book Pro. I would like to find the list of all updates and downloads that have occurred since purchase. Where can I find that info?

I know how to do the updates. What I dont know is what size each update that I have completed was. I am having a data usage disagreement with my Telco and want to prove to them that this computer did not download the amount of data they are claiming it did.

  • I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A MAC MINI WITH BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD AND ON SCREEN ALL IM GETTING IS A PIC SHOWING TO SWITCH ON KEYBOARD AND ANOTHER THAT SHOWS A SWITCH ON COMPUTER. I CANT SEE A SWITCH ON THE MINI.

I have just bought a mac mini and am trying to set up. The unit is asking me to swith on bluetooth keyboard via pic 1 then pic 2 shows another switch.
I can't see this switch. can anyone help before i launch this thing out the window!

    Symptoms
When using Setup Assistant to configure your Mac mini or iMac for the first time, the Bluetooth keyboard may have difficulty pairing.
    Resolution
Use a wired keyboard to configure the Mac mini or iMac with the Setup Assistant. If a wired keyboard is not available, follow these steps:
Press and hold the Power button until the computer turns off.
Press the Power button to start the computer.
When a language selection appears, press and hold the power key on the Bluetooth keyboard so that the green light is flashing (discoverable mode).
Use the mouse to click the language you would like.
A code should appear on the screen. Enter the code on the Bluetooth keyboard and press Return. Note: No visible feedback appears on the screen while you enter the code.
The computer and the wireless keyboard should now be paired.

  • I just purchased a mac air, i heard i can get the LIONS for free, is this free

I just purchased a mac air 1 week ago, i was told my bestbuy sales person that i can get the free download to LIONS in july, is this true? or should i just return the macbook air and waite for july.
    thanks.
this is the first mac for me ever, so far i love it.

Yes, that's correct. Keep your receipt and the box to prove date of purchase.
There is a rumor that Apple will release a new MBA model concurrent with the release of Lion. If you return yours within 14 days you can get your money refunded (less restocking fee.) Then wait for the new model since it may show up in another month or so. Bear in mind that a new MBA in July is just a rumor.

  • QUESTION - I have just purchased a mac and get my contacts from my iphone 4 onto iCloud.  In settings groups all my contacts fall under hotmail. HELP

I have just purchased a mac and get my contacts from my iphone 4 onto iCloud.  In settings>groups>all my contacts fall under hotmail. HELPQuestion

Do you have iCloud configured on the iPhone and on the MacBook Air? If not, you'll want to do that for seamless transferring of contacts between the two devices. If you have an iCloud account already, set it up on the phone first. If you do not have an iCloud account I'd recommend signing up for one on the computer first as it's easier to navigate the setup screens. Once iCloud is setup on both machines the contacts will automatically sync (faster if the iPhone is on wireless).
Regarding email, you'll need to ensure the email on the iPhone is configured for IMAP/Exchange. You'll then want to configure that same account in Apple Mail (or whatever email program you intend to use on the MacBook Air).
