Just read "Best of Macworld" article "How to disable Java on your Mac," in email dated 2/25/13. I run OS 10.4.11 and Java 1.5.0_19. Do I remove/isolate the same way? Will the effects of removal/isolation the same as described in the article?

Hello, if you're talking about disabling Java in say Safari...
Safari>Preferences>Security>uncheck/Disable Java in your Browser settings, not JavaScript.

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.

I write in greek as well as english on my mac (osx mountain lion) problem is, there is no spell checking on pages, and yes, i have added a greek dictionary in the library spelling folder. and i can also select it from the inspector. what's wrong?

1. What version of Pages?
2. Where did you get the Greek dictionary from and exactly how did you install it?

The only real and safe way to do this is to do it manually looking through each folder individually.
Many third party utilities claim to clean out a hard drive of various detritus, but some times will delete data that it shouldn't and delete any other important data that it shouldn't have.
The only "safe" way to accomplish what you need to accomplish is to do this manually.
Stay away from the OS X system folder!!!!!

You can download an app called OmniDiskSweeper.
This app will allow you to see where files maybe able to be delete are located.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you have images stored in iPhoto,,the only way to weed out duplicates is to do this manually.
When you delete them, they go to iPhoto's Trash. Remember to empty this when you are done.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what are duplicates and what isn't
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

I'm upgrading my Mac Pro 13" Mid-2012 with a hard drive just over half full.CMD+R does help, but I did not need to re-install the OS; I just rebooted from the recovery screen which appeared and it worked. I waited hours on the 'optimizing' dialog and, while that was happening BOX Sync would not work, and more...
Now, two folders which contain Apple TV Photo Cache describe themselves as 'UNIX Executable File' which, when selected, do try to run from a command line, and that simply fails. Now, I'll have to waste more time I wish I could bill somebody for to figure out that problem, too.
I've noticed that Apple is slowly, but surely, acting more and more like Microsoft -- severe problems with iTunes across all OS, glitchy upgrades like this one.... That never, ever happened when Jobs was alive. Best guess, he used to test everything himself and made phone calls if he saw anything like what we're talking about here. -

I upgraded from Iphone 3g to iphone 4. I had to update my macbook pro to Lepard just to sync. the **** thing with the new iphone 4. I bought and updated to lepard. Now when I try to sync itunes does not recognize my new iphone 4 as mine and wants to erase everything I have bought using the phone before it will sync! It says everything on the phone now will be cleared in order to sync it with my existing info on the computer from my previous iphone. How can I just get everything from my current iphone 4 into itunes, basically add it to the info from my previous iphone 3g that is currently in my itunes? I dont want to lose what I have on my phone currently....I paid money for half the apps for crying out loud.
I was so frustrated by this when I first bought the phone that I just pushed it out of my mind and NEVER synced it. Please help...Nope - you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version on to a device running an older iOS version. The reverse works, but in your case to use your backup, you must update to iOS 7.0.3 - no other option if you want to use that backup.

You can run GarageBand 6.0.5 on your Mac - the version is described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1507
But you cannot download a full version any longer from the AppSTore, the current App Store version is 10.0.2, and that is incompatible with your system. To get a compatible version, buy an iLife '11 installer from Amazon, or check, if your Mac came with bundled applications on an instller disk.

Why would you want a start button to stop something?
Seriously, I would not routinely shut down your Mac. It is not necessary. Just set it to sleep in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
When you are not using it, just walk away. Things will work better that way. Most of my Macs don't get shut down except while restarting them for software updates. This might be once every couple of months. -

Because of the numerous times that Java vulnerabilities have been discovered and exploited over the last year, I definitely recommend disabling Java in your web browser if at all possible. If you haven't installed Java on Mac OS X 10.8, you don't have Java, so you're safe. However, if you have, you should disable Java in your web browser. That alone is sufficient protection.
Note that running in a non-admin account will not protect you! All that will do is prevent certain types of infection, but a lot of recent Mac malware has used techniques that do not require admin access. Flashback, for example, was fully capable of infecting a standard user account through a Java exploit, without needing the user to do anything at all.
Also, note that there have been some recommendations to use ClickToPlugin to block Java... however, if you read that plugin's site carefully, you'll note that it cannot block all Java applets, and is thus not good protection against Java exploits.
