Just Some General Info. Questions

I was just wondering how many songs, videos, podcasts, movies etc. are in the iTunes store worldwide. The US iTunes page says 3.5 million but thats only US.
By the way, I'm posting in the mac section because I own a mac. (for those of you who wondered...)

Okay, 512MB RAM, is your issue, you need at least 1GB to run OSX with any resemblance of snappiness. Using 80% of your drive is a fair bit, but not bad. Its good to have 10% of your drive free at any given time (the system will at times use about that much for virtual memory, although maybe more in your case since you have so little RAM). You might want to start looking through your files and see what you do an don't need, since you can fill up a few GBs fast in some situations (such as installing new programs, etc.)

Some General Slowness Questions

Hi there,
I've had my MacBook Pro since August 2006. I love it dearly, but in the past couple months (especially since I've upgraded to Leopard) it has been so, so, so slow. Dock taking forever to open programs, frequent appearances of the rainbow wheel of death, I've been needing to use Force Quit a lot due to frozen screens. I don't know much technical information about computers, so I've been at a loss to try to solve this problem. Some questions:
-As an insane college student, I tend to leave my computer on all night, and most of the time in general. I've heard differing opinions on whether this is good or bad. Should I be shutting down every night? Could this be a cause of the slowdown?
-Could it simply be a space issue? I'm using 60 of 74 available GB. iPhoto and iTunes in particular are slow and freeze a lot. I've tried looking at Activity Monitor, but I can't really figure out how to interpret its data. Looking at its processes list, Microsoft Office seems to be taking up a lot of work just when I have it open...right now Excel is using 38 MB (Real) and 1 GB (Virtual) of Memory. Firefox is using 885 GB of Virtual memory. It also seems that I have the PowerPC version of Office, not the Intel version (which is confusing because I bought Office with the computer)--could that be a problem?
-I downloaded an application called Cocktail and have been running it, I guess it's supposed to be a general cleanup type app, not sure if it's making any difference though.
-Sorry, I'm obviously pretty clueless at these things! Thanks for anyone who took the time to read this.

Some General Issue Questions

Rather than search thru a lot of messages, thought I'd post a
synopsis of all my recent issues and see if anyone has any
solutions/suggestions...
(1) When I publish, some of my "click Next" hot spots (go to
next slide) do not render in the published Flash move files -
however, they truly exist and are properly configured in the cp
file - and seem to work fine in Preview (movie) mode.
(2) The application I'm trying to "captivate" is a web app,
built using a combination of frames, javascript, and dhtml
components. Most of the mouse clicks I make while recording are
useless, as they are usually AHEAD OF what's actually happening
on-screen, although what I'm capturing APPEARS to be accurate and
where I am on the screen. I initially tried do-overs, and got so
frustrated (changing how quickly I moved the mouse, struck keys,
etc.), that I just turned off the Full Motion recording options,
slowed the frames per second - all of these things, several times,
trying different combindations - nothing was successful.
Any suggestions for settings? Basically, I'm capturing a
sequence of screens and putting in all the information into text
boxes and manually inserting click boxes to create a "demo" - in my
opinion, totally defeating the intent and purpose of using
Captivate to begin with.
At this point, I've spent so much time experimenting and
trying to get the "automated" features to work, I've basically
turned them all off and am doing everything manually, just like
PowerPoint.
So, why is Captivate so much better than PowerPoint? Other
than the Flash rendering of the files, I don't see it...
Anybody experience any of these things?

It sounds like you are very frustrated....
1 - I have never had this issue with Next buttons. Perhaps
you can provide more details on the settings on your next button?
2 - I would definitely remove the full motion recording. I
use the recording feature rarely in general, as I need to modify
the screens to change proprietary data. I usually take screen
captures, modify the screen in Photoshop, then insert the bmp image
as an image slide.
But, I find that the record feature it can be very handy and
a quick easy way to create a demo. Captivate is def better than PPT
for many reasons - the timeline, the ability to insert a mouse
movement, ability to publish as Flash, the ability to customize the
size of the movie or demonstration, ability to have click boxes,
buttons, text entries, etc.
As far as suggestion for settings when recording - on the
Recording Options tab, I usually have Enable Auto Recording
selected and I use the demonstration mode, select to record
keystrokes and hear tap sounds, hear camera sounds during
recording, and move new windows inside recording area.
A good tip to remember, if you think that Captivate didn't
capture a screen while you are recording, you can always hit
<Print Scrn> to capture the screen. If it becomes a
duplicate, you can always delete the slide.
Hope this helps. I love Captivate.... it has it's quirks -
but nothing that can't be worked with.

Some General iPhone Questions

As I consider buying an iPhone, I have a few general questions.
1. What are some possible improvements that can be done to the iPhone by Apple via software updates? When do you think we will see these updates?
2. What are some of the possible improvements that can only come from purchasing a second generation iPhone?
3. I want to make this my ONLY phone and ditch a land line for the first time. Is the clarity any better than your average cell phone?
4. I'm not hard of hearing, but some reports have said that the volume is low (for phone conversations) and difficult to hear when used as a traditional phone without headphones. Are there settings on the phone to raise the volume? Can this be a software update from Apple if this is indeed a problem?
5. This would be my first time switching carriers. If I want to keep my current number (from Verizon) would I cancel my service there first or would registering the iPhone via iTunes do that for me?

Since there have not yet been any updates, no one knows for sure. But any improvements in the apps and widgets would definitely be one possibility; also firmware upgrades

Everything can be improved on an updated phone, particularly implementation of 3G.

This is very subjective! I find it to be no worse nor no better then most phones I have owned.

If you cancel service with Verizon first - you will LOSE that number!
I do not believe registering the old number with AT&T will automatically cancel your service although AT&T MAY do this.
It would be best to talk to AT&T as to the proper method prior to or at time of purchase.

Some general C7 questions

Hi all,
Purchased a C7 recently and just wanted to ask a few general questions, rather than creating a thread for each one.
Does anyone know if there is a way of deleting all messages at the same time. Seems it can only be done one by one?
With regards to the battery, what are your experiences? I find it is running out before the end of each day. It's strange because I gave it the initial eight hour charge and then a couple of times more after to make sure. There is no excessive use at all, just normal.
Also, where can I see what version software I have?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Excuse my incompetence, still getting used to the phone and all, quite different from most other phones I've had.

Also if you go into Optionsin Messaging, select other and set show messages in groups, and your messages will be grouped together by date, so you can do a mass clearout and still leave the messages from the last day or two if you wish
It will not affect your battery however long you leave it on charge as the electronics in the phone will stop charging once fully charged, and also giving the phone a 'top up' during the day will cause no harm as modern batteries do not get any 'memory effect'

Some general photo questions

I will be undertaking a major project soon that involves scanning all (and I mean every single one) of my family's photographs so that we have digital copies in case something bad happens to the originals. I plan on using iPhoto to store and catalog the photos. But my question is, when I scan the photos, what file format should I use? My scanner (HP Scanjet 3970) can scan to jpeg, tiff, tiff (compressed), bmp, and gif. which of those should I use? Also, I read somewhere that tiff for macs are different from tiff in windows. Is this true?
Also, what resolution is optimal for keeping an archive of photos? File size is not really an issue since I'll be using an external hard drive that's plenty big.

iPhoto will handle any of those formats. My suggestion for maximum compatibility is to choose between tiff (uncompressed) and jpeg. Why? they're pretty universal, regardless of computer. As to choosing between them? Well jpeg is a lossy compressed format, tiff isn't. The files sizes are huge with tiff, quite acceptable with jpeg. How much editing will you do? IF not much, then there is little re-saving and jpeg will be absolutely fine.

The general rule of thumb is 300 dpi is what's required for printing. Screen images require less.

Hello,
When you say installation problems, do you mean installation problems with the DB on Solaris, or installation problems related to APEX specifically (if so, what were those problems?).
You can certainly use DB links from another instance to integrate with your LIVE system, however if those applications are going to be 'high volume' (where 'high volume' is a very subjective term), I would probably advise that you consider fighting through the problems and installing APEX into the Live machine so that all the transactions etc happen locally (from the LIVE machine perspective), purely to minimize the overhead of the DB Link traffic and to simplify the infrastructure.
However, of course there are reasons/arguments why people might not want to install something like APEX into their live DB server, so it depends on your particular environment which method is most feasible for you.

Some general domain questions

Can some one clear my mind on this, we did some tests the other day and want to check...
We have 3 domain controllers 2008 R2, A, B and C. A and B are located in the same site, Site London, C is located in another site, Site NewYork. forrest and domain functional level are 2008 r2.
- When we powered down domain controller A and B, should not C take over when users logon ? I have check the replication, and its ok between the sites, take 15 minutes before a user account for examlple is replicated. Should not the users in the site for
domain controller A and B only noticed delay on logon (or no delay at all?) ? Does it fails because domain controller A that has all the FSMO roles is down?
- When a user logs on to a domain i can check with the command "echo %logonserver%" which domain controller this users authenticated agains right? There should not be any prefered domain controller for A and B right, this was before when you had
like primary and secondary domain controller i guess. It seems like every clients and servers in the site London authenticates against domain controller A, why is that, is it because this server has all the FSMO roles or since this is the primary DNS
server ?
- Another thing we noticed, was when the domain controller A was down, it was slow loggin on, but there where authenticated against domain controller B at last, but why slow ?
- Another question that not directly related, the customer is using a lot of applications that uses DCOM, they complain that when both domain controllers in site london is down, it fails to authenticate... does this DCOM has any kind of time out values,

Based on your description, when the DC A and DC B of site London powered down, all users in London site can’t logon, that is to say, the DC C didn’t take over.
Could users in NewYork site log on normally? Which errors did domain users of London sites get when they logon?
If all configurations are correct, when DC A and B powered down, C should take over when users logon. And all FSMO roles in one DC is not a good choice when we have several
DCs.
To troubleshoot this issue,
Please check the DNS configurations of DNS server and DNS client in London Site at first. Such as if you configured DNS forwarders, and if the preferred DNS server and
alternate DNS server of DCs were configured correctly. You could use dcdiag /test:DNS command to check DNS issues in your DC.
Please run
repadmin /replsummary or repadmin /showrepl command to double check if the AD replicate has any problems.

RDBMS Realm Schema Properties - newbie looking for some general info

I am new to the world of WL Security Realms. I am trying to better
understand what is involved in setting up a RDBMS Security Realm and
speficially the Schema Properties within that security realm.
The situation that I am trying to solve right now is that I want to
provide authentication for a given application using a "user list"
from another DB that our application will have access to via JDBC.
First off, would using the RDBMS security realm allow me to do
something along these lines - ie access a "user list" from another DB?
If YES, then what sort of things would have to be done from the
schema properties standpoint in order to make this possible?
Note that the other DB will also be an Oracle instance managed by
WebLogic, the same as with our application, if it makes a difference
in any way.

Thanks very much for the links. However, I've already gone through the standard documentation in SAP and they are a bit too high level/vague for me. I have considerable experience in xRPM, cProjects Suite and have good grasp of project management concepts, tool and techniques. My knowledge of PS is somewhat limited though.
What I am specifically looking for is what type integration options and scenarios are available. For example, cProjects can have phases and tasks defined. How would these integrate with for example WBS elements and networks in PS? What are the things you would do in cProjects and not PS and vice versa? Hope my question is clearer now.

Some General iPhone 4 questions

We just bought my wife a used iPhone 4 and (a little late now) we have some questions.
Generally the questions revolve around the issues the iPhone 4 had when they were first released - something about the antennae location. How was that resolved? and if so how?
Is there a way to determine when an iPhone was manufactured or how old it is?
I see in the forum 'refined' lineup there are iPhone 4 forums for both GSM and CDMA - where is that shown on the iPhone?
The primary issue we are having is with signal strength. Since it's 'hers' I only hear about it so don't get much chance to see for myself.

Some general questions about swing

Hi,
I used to do some swing development couple years back but since then I have been more involved in the j2ee scene. I have lost some touch and was wondering if some of my questions can be answered. I'd appreciate every effort.
First of all, I am trying to make an applet that can be used to upload multiple pics at the same time. Similar idea to facebook picture upload applet. My Q's are
-> can every swing application be turned into an applet? or when the developer starts writing an application he should write it from an applet POV
-> I noticed that the applet on facebook looks a lot like a window application. icons and the look and feel of the application is not that of a applets i saw couple years ago with sun java look and feel, how can this be achieved? is there some small example?
-> can someone suggest an example || tutorial of an applet that shows how to upload an image to the server?
and lastly for mental satisfaction :)
-> how hard do you think it is to build such an application. I assume it will just have a JTree on the left side and on right side it will show contents of the folder that is currently clicked.

However, the tutorial explains how to show icons from images. But what about in my case when the images arent even on the server yet.
Basically when the user is browsing files and gets to their my pics folder on the right side i want to show icons of images in that folder. for this reason i doubt I will be able to use what they've implemented in that tutorial. As the pics havnt yet been uploaded by the user i have no direct access to the images.

No questions, just some ANSWERS about XML

I'm relatively new to InDesign and XML (though I've done HTML for many years, so XML at least looked familiar to me). I'm trying to automate production of an InDesign document, and ran into several pitfalls along the way. I'm sure there will be more. But I'd like to share my problems and solutions, for anyone else who may be experiencing the same thing(s).
1) I logically grouped elements using a Parent tag. For example, on the cover page, I have all elements within a "CoverPage" tag which does not reference a physical object. InDesign would not properly import the XML as long as I was using the Parent in this way. After talking it over with Adobe support, we discovered that it worked ONLY if "Clone Repeating Text Elements" is checked--even though I had NO repeating elements. Support said they would report this as a bug.
2) The documentation implies that to replace a linked image in an InDesign document, you use the form:
Maybe it's my HTML experience creeping in, but I assumed Image was a defined keyword that had to appear in the XML. In reality, the actual TAG NAME should take the place of the word "Image". For example, the tag name in my document is "CoverPhoto" and the image is a "c:/myphoto.jpg", so the proper syntax is:
3) I discovered the issue of #2 above, by taking the VERY GOOD suggestion from Support (thanks, Bryce!) of EXPORTING the existing document to XML and seeing how InDesign formats it. Note that it won't add line breaks, but you can still scan through it to see what it's doing. Also be aware that the only things that will export, are things that you have tagged.
4) I had an issue with imported photos not filling the frame as expected. The original images were fitted to the frames. This issue appears in another question in the Archives, without a suitable answer. The answer is surprisingly simple: instead of Right-clicking the image and choosing your Fitting options, which appears to be a "one-time" application, click the image and in the Object menu, go to Fitting > Frame Fitting Options and choose your fitting. This setting seems (so far at least) to "stick" even with imported XML content.
I hope this helps someone else out there avoid some of the frustrations that I went through. I have to admit, InDesign is amazing and sweet--but the documentation on XML needs to be a lot better.

Need to build document with repeated items (companies, contacts, description). This info stored in DB and can be exported in XML the way I need. InDesign CS3.
Here is the details:
Each company has name and contacts (address, tel, fax, email and site, BUT some of them may be missed) and may have a description (but may NOT)
In my doc I want to see smth like that for each company:
a) paragraph with company name
b) all contact info in separated paragraphs
c) description paragraph
Trouble is that I get unnecessary line breaks in places where some contact info or description are missed.
Can anyone help? Sorry for my english 8)
