Just stop already Front Row, I'm tring to use my APPLE TV!

I've searched the support threads and a few pages in this discussion group but missed what has got to be an easy fix. My Macbook pro is often either open and being used, or closed but still sitting in between me and my Apple TV. Whenever i use my apple TV remote, my Macbook- as it should- launched front row. Annoying especially when it is closed and in sleep, and now wakes up. How do I stop Front Row from launching when I am really working my apple tv. I rarely use it on my Macbok so I don't mind having to manually launch the application.

You will need to "pair" each of your two remotes with each device.

  • I just installed the Front Row update. When

I just installed the Front Row update. When I view photos through Front Row, the first album selection that comes up is "Shared Photos" - I set iphoto NOT to look for shared photos. I also set the slideshow NOT to play music. But every time I quit and then re-open iPhoto. those settings are not held - it says to look for shared photos and to play music...
How do I get the settings in iPhoto to stick?

    HappySwitcher,
    try the following:
Quit iPhoto if it is running.
In your user directory there is folder named "Library". Inside the Library Folder there is a folder called "Preferences". Inside this preference folder there is a file named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" .
Do the following, click on the name of this file and change it to "com.apple.iPoto.plist" or anything else different than iPhoto.
Now launch iPhoto and adjust your settings.
See if they "stick", if so, you can trash the file whose name you changed. If not try running permissions and repeating the process.
Check back if it does not work.

  • Auto Sleep stopped by front row.

    Hey,
Ive recently turned my iMac G5 into an alarm clock, using the sheduler to turn off at a specific time, and turn on at another time to then play music at a full volume.
However my problem lies in it turning itself off. Genraly I use Front Row to play some music as i fall asleep. However when the sheduler goes to turn itself off. I find that itunes (the app which runs behind front row) has prevented shut down.
Is there anyway of stopping Front row (and itunes) from doing this?
    Thanks
    James

I tried to do this when I first got my iBook G4, and I found it very complicated and fiddly to do. Since then, I have used many alarm and sleep applications, but most of them have had their problems and flaws. All that I can do now is recommend that you try my favourite application Aurora. It is a freeware application that has options for both setting an alarm, plus turning your mac off after you've fallen asleep. It is a very easy to use application, and is highly recommended by me to any of my friends. Although there are little flaws in the application, you may contact the author, and he will sort them out straight away. I did submit a bug of my own, and too my surprise, he emailed me back the same day, explaining how he will fix the problem and even gave me a preview version of the next update, just to check and see whether the bug was still there.
As well as all this, you will no longer have to worry about the system scheduler, as Aurora automatically sets itself to turn on/wake your mac a couple of minutes before an alarm is set to go off.

  • Front Row: Becomes runaway process after using

Perhaps someone can verify if this is a wide spread problem, or just my machine.
I use FR to playback video files and music in my home office; however, after "closing" FR, the "Front Row" process runs away. Comsuming 100% of a processor and generally slowing down the system.
I end up force quitting the FR app and the system returns to normal -- I've rebooted without effect.
But even after quitting the FR app, pressing "Menu" on the remote will bring it back up and work normally, until you close it again.
    Any ideas?
Tried all the usual fix, permissions, plist, reboot...

Hi Kevin Arnold, thanks for the tip on force-quitting through Activity Monitor. It worked and freed the CPU resources -- Plus I can get back into Front Row and it seems to work (until the next crash...) so maybe now I won't have to restart everytime this happens!
When I say Front Row crashes, I mean that it hammers the CPU in the background. It never actually crashes with an error message, it just fails to quit sometimes (often) when going back to the desktop. Also on occassion, FrontRow HAS started 'hammering the CPU' while still running in the foreground and I get stuck inside FrontRow unable to return to the desktop; but in this case, apple-Q WILL work within Front Row to kill the app and return everything to normal.
My FrontRow just crashed again a minute ago, so I ran the % sample Front\ Row 5 terminal command you posted earlier for someone else, and the result said 'bash: no such process'. **yes, I ran the command before force-quitting through application monitor**

  • How do I point Front Row to a media server using AppleShare?

I haven't used Front Row much. Does it have to use the same library as my iTunes? What I'd like to do is point Front Row on my various Macs to my Lacie Media server. I fooled around with "settings" in Front Row but I'm not finding the server on my network.

Drag an alias of your movies folder from the media server to your Front Row computer's movies folder inside your home account. Front Row will allow you to navigate using that alias.

  • Remote won't stop controlling Front Row!

I've been battling with my AppleTv since October! As soon as I start scrolling throught netflix, the music starts going or some random tv show from itunes begins. It's getting very annoying.
I've already paired the remote to the AppleTv and tried to set the preferences in itunes to forget remotes, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Go into system preferences - security, on the computer, and disable the infrared receiver.

  • Is Front Row the unloved child of iTunes?

I get the feeling that Front Row is the unloved child of iTunes. iTunes progresses, but there has been little change to Front Row.
MANY months ago, cover art stopped displaying from a shared library. Now we are witnessing many cases of videos not playing properly (e.g. Video but no sound, Sound but no video).
And my latest issue is that items in my iTunes library aren't even appearing in the Front Row app (which I will post next).
Please Apple / iTunes -- give Front Row the love it deserves!!

With the Leopard update disk I got when purchasing my Mac Mini in February, is there an option to reinstall just the bundled software, without being forced to reinstall the entire OS?.
bundled software means ilife ( iphoto, imovie, garage band, iweb and idvd). Is this what you are talking about? ilife is not part of leopard so it wouldn't be on the leopard upgrade DVD. if you want to reinstall it you need either a separate ilife DVd if you bought it or the original Tiger install disks that came with the computer. Insert the tiger disk, open it in finder and double-click on 'install bundled software only". this will reinstall ilife.
Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?
no. Front Row is part of the OS itself. you can reinstall Front Row fromthe leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>.

  • Front Row on an External Display

**Note that this is for Leopard's Front Row and only may not apply to Tiger's**
Here's an explanation of the bugs/irksomes now facing Front Row
    1. The screensaver option can be buggy so go to preferences within Front Row to disable it.
    2. Whatever screen you use front row on, the other will be black.
    3. Front Row does not play video in mirroring mode, period.
    4. Front Row, when opened, will display on whatever monitor is set as your primary display at that time.
    5. Even after exiting it, if you check it the activity monitor it will still run in the background for 30 minutes (not sure on that time frame).
    6. If you open it up again before it is shutdown, it will try to display on whatever was set as the primary display when it was first launched.
Okay, now that you understand that, here is somethings to keep in mind
-When you initially open it, the settings get stuck, so if you opened it with the wrong display set as your primary monitor, just quit it in the activity monitor, switch the main monitor in your display system preferences, and then reopen it.
-You can trick it to display on your secondary display by enabling mirror-mode, opening front row, exiting front row (not quiting), disabling mirror mode, and lastly reopening front row. Effectively, it gets stuck to display on the external display and does so once you turn mirroring off. This isn't even remotely elegant but is my preferred method.
-If you have your external display connected while your computer is asleep, pressing a button on your remote will automatically wake it and use the external display as your primary/only monitor. This means that Front Row will display on your TV very easily if you put your computer to sleep then wake it with the remote BUT you must always be mindful that if you had opened it recently, you may have to quit it first.
The only last suggestion I have is that if you want quick and easy access to quitting front row, you can create an applescript to quit it with this
tell application "Front Row" to quit
If anyone knows how to change primary displays using applescripts please post as ideally a script could be created that would just make sure Front Row was quit, switch displays, then would open it streamlining the entire process.
Well really ideally apple would make Front Row a little more dynamic with the option to display on the external display and smart enough to know which one that is but this problem existed in the last version too and they never fixed it then so....

Well, just putting the display in sleep mode won't work as, for some reason I don't understand, sleeping the display turns off the external monitor.
Thinking a little more clearly now, the method of sleeping the computer only works for the portable Macs as the lid must be down while it wakes up for it to work.

  • Front Row Using iPod Dock - Is it possible.

Hello there. I've been trying to find some info on the iPod Dock only because I've heard from some that it includes the Apple Remote, but can not seem to get this confirmed on either the apple store or amazon.
First off is it even possible to use the remote with the iPod Dock? From my understanding it is, so if that's the case wouldn't it then be possible to use Front Row on the Mac Pro since the IR port is now technically there?
I mean mainly I use my Mac Pro for doing work, but as the system is in my bedroom I think that it's kind of silly that I can't lay in bed at night and watch a movie without having to get up out of bed or something. That's really my only complaint about the system.. you pay a fairly larger amount more for being able to use a feature that's already built into the system the only means to access it is to purchase a separate ~$600 system.
Oh well sorry to rant off. Anyway, can you control Front Row on the Mac Pro using the iPod Dock?
    Cheers
    -rr

I'd like to be able to also do this with my iMac G5, the iPod dock connected to it and my Apple Remote. Unfortunately, a search of versiontracker.com finds lots of apps to extend functionality on Macs that already are supported (ie have built in IR), as well as apps that let you use Bluetooth devices as a clicker on any Mac.
    Anyone got a suggestion?

  • Playlists not showing up in folders in Front Row 1.2.1

Just installed the Front Row update on my G5 iMac and I was psyched because I would now be able to see shared music in the Front Row interface. However, I was dismayed to find that no playlists showed up if those playlists were located in playlist folders in iTunes on the remote machine. If you navigate down to a folder that contains playlists and open it, all you see is the long list of files in every playlist that exists in that folder.
This is crazy and makes Front Row basically unusable for anyone who has playlists located in folders. I make playlists and organize them because I don't want a huge long list of songs and playlists.
Am I missing something obvious here or is this a bug?

  • DVD player vs Front Row

I've always played DVDs on my Mac Mini through Front Row but have recently been having some audio dropout issues. I was searching around here and just read that Front Row plays DVDs through QuickTime, whereas the Mac DVD Player is different.
Is there a preference from the forum between using Front Row or the DVD Player? Could using Front Row be causing some of these audio issues I'm having?
(I posted something similar on the Mac Mini discussion thread, but thought this would be a better place, so please excuse the double post)

Oh yeah, and I can still view the DVD in Front Row with no problems.

  • Front Row behaviour changed

    Hi.
I am using my mac mini as a media station and to watch TV a lot. To bring Front Row and eyetv together, I used this tip of elgato: http://forums.elgato.com/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=1360
Despite the performance issues of Front Row (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/01/front-row-performance-takes-a-dive-with-newest-ki tty/) the configuration of Front Row changed after the Snow Leopard Update.
It is not possible to access Front Row with a long press of the menu button from eyetv anymore. Does anybody know how to get back the default behaviour of the eyetv tip?

    Hey,
as someone earlier said it seems to be an issue with the screen saver.
However i didn´t have to turn mine off alltogether. If you go to the settings pane in Front Row and turn the screen saver off it is just inactive when Front Row is enabled. Why would you want a screen saver then anyways?
This fixed the problem for me.

  • Front Row - DVD - Widescreen

    Hi All,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo) and i am having trouble getting widescreen movies to play in widescreen in Front Row.
I have managed (using the Video Zoom function) to get them to play in DVD Player, but even though I have saved the settings (they play in Widescreen in DVD Player everytime now, without any adjustment) my DVD's still wont play in widescreen in Front Row.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    All software patched and updated.
    Thanks
    Matt

Hi, this feature was kinda avail before i upgraded front row to the current version. If you put a dvd in, then go to dvd player, select the zoom you want, THEN go to front row, the zoom is effective (ie now with teh update dvd player is closed when you go into front row.)

  • Does Front Row use Quicktime plugins during play?

    Hi,
Just curious - does Front Row play everything that you've set up Quicktime to play? For example, if my Quicktime can play Divx files that my Toast 7 creates, does that automatically mean Front Row can play them as well? Or, does Front Row have it's own feature set of things it will and won't play?
    Thanks

Yes, it does. Any app that uses the QuickTime architecture has available everything else that QuickTime does.

  • Front Row GONE after A&I...

    Hey y'all,
Just tried activating Front Row - didn't work with the remote or the keyboard (on my MacBook).
Had a look in Core Services, and the Front Row app is gone!
I did an Archive & Install a few days back, and Front Row always worked before them (heck, because it was INSTALLED and THERE)...
Any ideas how to get it back? Is there an installer on the included discs that I could use Pacifier to get to and install it?
    Argh!

I'm am having the same problem. I just did an Archieve and Install on a Mac Mini.
Front Row app is gone. It is still in the Core Services folder of the previous System but not in the new one.
Doing a search for it does not show anything except the old .plist file.
    I guess I'll give Apple a call...
I wonder what else is gone...
