Just switched to Mac

Got my 17" iMac yesterday. So far it's AMAZING. There's only one thing though. Do I absolutely have to reformat my iPod in order to upload songs to it and risk all of my data being erased? Or can I just plug in and go with pretty much everything else?

Nevermind. I just tried for myself. Everything works fine. Bestkind.

  • Just switched to Mac :: one week w/ a black Macbook

    Hello all...
I just switched to Mac from Windows XP last weekend. I've used Macs before but never owned one of my own (big difference), so I started the hideous task of transferring my data from my XP notebook to the Macbook.
Before buying the Macbook, I had no doubt looked at Windows-based notebooks by HP and Dell. I've always had excellent service w/ HP so I had priced out a few w/ them--nothing "excited" me, not even Vista. I looked at Dell's site b/c the XPS notebooks look nice, but I couldn't find anything even remotely reasonably priced for the size I wanted (12"-14"...total coincidence that the MB is 13").
I belong to a union and we get special pricing (12% off) through Dell on notebooks, so naturally I decided to check it out; it ended up being "more" than the Macbook for the same components by about $100. I was floored b/c I always "assumed" that Macs were always more money than PCs, esp. Dells. I'm not knocking on Dell, but it was surprising that their Inspiron-series was more part-for-part than the Macbook. HP was the closer to the price of the Macbook, but the MB was still cheaper.
My g/f and I headed over to the local Apple Store and I finally got a good look at the Macbooks in person--black sold me. It looks a lot like the old Thinkpad-black I remember from college which I always drooled over but couldn't afford. The matte finish is just gorgeous and the keyboard has a nice feel to it. The touchpad is HUGE compared to my HP and I like that you can right-click w/ two fingers, and scroll from anywhere on the touchpad.
After about two days, we noticed a small seem seperation at the top of the screen, a little to the right of the camera (which by the way is awesome...the camera, not the seperation). We boxed it up and took it back to the apple store, where they just plain took care of everything--very good customer service. We got the new one and the gentleman insisted that we check it before it left the store, which we did at the Genius Bar and all was good. Other than this little "hiccup", it's been a smooth experience and I even managed to get some work done in between playing w/ iPhoto and Garageband. We also picked up a Airport Extreme and my g/f got a new iPod.
Anyway, that's all, I just thought I'd share that. It's good to be part of the family.
    Cheers..
    John

    Congrats!
I also just purchased my first mac about a week ago. I have been a windows user my whole life and sort of bought this mac 'on a whim'. I went through two gateway desktops that had both hardware and software problems (ie; nothing ran right on Vista...).
I picked up my macbook since it was the same price (and actually faster) than the gateway (sans the nicer graphics card).
Needless to say, i'm not looking back. Mine has a minor vibration, though I hear most with my drive do. I absolutely love it. I'm not going back to windows (though i will use bootcamp to set up dualboot for my windows-only apps and gaming).
    ENJOY!

  • Just Switched To  Mac's and Need Help With A Few Issues!

    Hi All,
I finally did it and switched to a Mac!! Never thought it would happen as I always felt guilty about the cost but after 5 laptops crashing on me - well, I just could not take it anymore! I managed to get a fairly good deal on a 15" Macbook Pro - 2.2/120GB version. I still don't know much about the mac way but am trying to learn so any help would be appreciated!
1). Is there any kind of video tutorial (preferably free!) that I can use that will help me learn the Ma OS X? I have Tiger 10.4.11 on my MBP (Did you hear that - MY MBP!!!)
2). AOL Assured me that they fully support Mac before I purchased (only 5 times!) but after I had bought it - they then told me that they do not! I got the AOL disk for Mac but it kind of ***** - features are missing etc. Does anyone in the UK run their Mac's with AOL and does it run as per normal? Any advice with AOL & Mac?
3). AOL also told me - hey, no probs - of course you can transfer all your old emails, favourites folders, personal filing cabinet from a PC to a Mac - but then, after I bought it - the so called dedicated Mac Experts at AOL tell me that simply is not possible - What advice can anyone give me who has switched from PC to Mac with AOL and who needed to transfer all their stuff over? AOL tells you totally different things depending on who you talk to and even from what their web page state! I am really fed up with them!
4). If I am ever successful in getting all my many years worth of data from AOL on a PC to a Mac, I am really intent of changing ISP's - what are the best ones for Mac that offer good Mac support, good deals and no charges for telephone support?
5). I was initially happy with Tiger as again, AOL assured me they supported it but not Leopard (even their website says so) and as I stupidly thought that it must be true (we are talking AOL here!). Now I know that they don't support anything Mac, I am contemplating moving to Leopard - I am a little cautious as I heard there were/are many bugs and unhappy leopard experiences - have the majority of these been solved yet and is it advisable to change to Leopard or should I wait until an updated version comes out?
6). My MBP was originally bought in the US but is registered to my name in the UK. it has 6 months Apple warranty left and I wish to buy Applecare. Apple says it 'recommends' buying Applecare in the country at which the item is registered (not bought, as I understand it). Does that mean, if I buy Applecare in the USA, Apple UK will still accept it and service my MBP as they would do any other or will I have to have the hassle of sending the thing to the USA if it needs attention? Applecare USA T&C's state only for the 50 States & Canada and Applecare UK state only for the UK & EU. Both however state international servicing?! I am a bit confused on this one. I travel a lot and need to know, that any Applecare I buy will not then be limited to just the places they state in the T&C's. As It reads to me, Applecare purchased in the USA/Canada will not cover the UK/Europe/ROTW and vice versa. Is this true or am I missing something or just plain thick?
5). I really wish to upgrade the 120GB HDD. My understanding is that it must be done by either Apple (who charge really silly money) or if correct, at an "Authorized Apple Service Provider" who of course will be much cheaper. If true, does this mean at ANY authorized apple service provider on the planet or just ones in which the item is registered? If I do the upgrade with a service provider, will Apple then also service the new HDD if something goes wrong as per normal anywhere in the world or will they then say, sorry, will not service the new HDD and you have to go back to the place where you had it installed, even though it was one of their authorized service centers? (that would really suck)!
6). The spelling and dictionary (and a few other things) are set to US English - how can I set to UK English? I have tried but to no avail so far.
    7) What and how should I set the Firewall settings so I will not get attacks by any form of malware? (I do not know much about this area and what the implications mean)!
Well, that's it so far - please bear my ignorance, I am so new to Mac's and hope this to be one of the smarter decisions I have made in life! Already I have strange sensation that I never had with all those years of Microsoft & PC's - I kinda feel reassured, safe, that if I have problems, they will get sorted, My life will now be easier and not having to worry so much about crashes, viruses, trojans etc, gives me a sense of liberation and contentment almost - very strange feeling but a **** good one! (if only the women in my life were like that)!
Thank You All From A PC to Mac Switcher (and NO! I do not feel guilty or scared anymore)!
    SuaveBhav!

I can help you with your questions about AppleCare, and can also reassure you that both the macbook pro and Leopard will be worth your investment and the time you are putting into figuring out how to get your data across. I switched from windows when I bought my macbook a year and a half ago and would not use any other system now. The other day I completed the transition by erasing parallels and Windows from my system entirely.
As for AppleCare, you can get warranty care anywhere in the world, no matter where you buy your AppleCare. Mine was bought and is registered in the US, I live in Slovakia, and have had it serviced several times in Austria and Slovakia under the warranty without any problems at all. There are differences, however, in exactly what the warranty covers from place to place, in accordance with the law in each place that AppleCare is issued. Even though I live in the EU, my agreement with Apple is an American one, and the American guarantees hold. If EU law would demand that Apple fix more things, for instance, than American law does, I could not get those things repaired under my agreement, and vice versa.
Basically, though, I understand my agreement with AppleCare to be that they will fix all problems/damage that are not my fault free of charge for two years after my initial one-year warranty runs out, and that is good enough for me.

  • PLEASE HELP! Just switched to Mac and I have a few questions about bootcamp

I am looking to load Boot Camp onto my MacBook and want to know if it is necessary to save things like songs to an external hard drive(the computer is new so i don't have any important documents or files on it).
Second Question: I would consider myself somewhat of an intermediate user on the PC operating system but I am new to Mac and want to know if I should run Boot Camp on my own knowing just the basics of Mac.
    Thanks for any help,
    -Cody
    Florida

If you have nothing important, don't worry. If you want to save the songs to an external hard drive do so. The key is being aware that you could lose everything, so you should back up anything and everything you don't want to lose. If you can't afford to lose the songs, back them up somewhere. If it were me, I would back up the entire computer, just in case, but that's me. Just be sure to unplug the external hard drive before commencing the Windows installation.
As for running Boot Camp on your own, I don't see why not. Most of the problems people have is not with Boot Camp per se but with the installation of Windows. In particular, take care to not overwrite or break your Leopard installation by selecting the wrong disk partition to install Windows on, and make sure you then format (or quick format) the Boot Camp partition to FAT or NTFS. Do not choose the "convert to NTFS" option!

  • I just switched to MAC

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought my first Mac 2 days ago and I just had a couple of questions. Keep in mind, these might be really dumb and obvious questions for you but I'm still trying to get used to it.
    1. How do you un-install applications?
    2. Is palm the only PDA that will sync with a Mac?
    3. Is Apple planning on making their own PDA?
Thanks for helping me, I really do appreciate it!!!
    iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Regarding 1: see post above (just drag to trash)
Regarding 2: no, although some PDAs (like blackberry's) require that you download thrrd party software to sync them. Explore the program iSync on your mac (its in the "Applications" folder) and check the iSync discussions for more info: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=731
Regarding 3: I think its very doubtful, but the iPod does have limited PDA like functions, like syncing to your macs address book and calendar - but you can't input new contacts or calendar items into an ipod, you have to do that on your mac.

  • Just switched to Mac Mail

I have one GMail account and and one Exchange account. The other day I finally made the switch (for several reasons) over to Mac's Mail and I'm having an issue.
Why is it that the most frequently Mail checks for new messages is every minute whereas on my previous client, Engourage, it would update with new messages in "real time?" Is there some setting I'm missing somewhere? Or am I somehow mistaken?
    Thanks.

I managed to fix it. I'm not really sure what you're talking about...but I got it to do what I wanted anyway. The Gmail account, which is an imap, seems to show new mail immediately when I send myself a message. As for the Exchange account--my school's server provides for IMAP configuration on that and so I made the adjustment in the settings and I receive new emails instantly.
How is this different from what you're talking about with push protocols because according to what you wrote, what I did should have been impossible.

  • Just switched to Mac, having artwork issues

I am in the process of rebuilding iTunes on a Mac for the first time. When I asked iTunes to get the album art for my over 40,000 items it naturally screwed up some (why can't they get Dylan or Springsteen right?) and left many others blank where I previously had art.
On my PC when I needed artwork that iTunes couldn't provide I found it elsewhere (Amazon.com usually) and just copied it and pasted it in iTunes. I can't figure out how to do this on the Mac. Any suggestions? This is the last step in rebuilding everything and i want to get it over with already!

You can copy and paste artwork on a Mac as well. Just select the album tracks, Get Info, delete any incorrect artwork that might be currently living in the artwork field, then paste in the artwork you've found on Amazon or elsewhere. As far as I know, this process should be the same on the Mac and PC.

  • Just switched to Mac from Windows

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro. I went thru all the setups etc. and am using the Mac now. I have Dreamweaver CS5 installed and when this is open and I go to Finder and search a file. The Dreamweaver window minimizes some. It's not only Dreamweaver that this happens to. That is why I logged this here. Can I change this in the setups somehow to have the previously opened window to stay maximized when opening another window?
    Thanks for your help.
    CC

Opening a window or switching applications should not change the size of other windows. I suspect that you're doing something wrong, in a Windows mindset, but I'm not sure what.
Is the background turning dark, and does the window move to the center of the screen? If so, you're activating Exposé somehow, which shows windows in a tiled view. See System Preferences -> Exposé & Spaces for options.
How are you going to the Finder? Are you clicking one of the little colored bubbles in the top left corner of the window? Those are for closing the window, minimizing the window to the Dock and resizing the window. None are strictly for switching applications.
Personally, I've found that using the universal command-H keystroke to hide applications is very useful, though Adobe products aren't very respectful of such things... Photoshop and Photoshop Elements step on that keystroke.

  • IPOD hidden files - just switched to MAC. please advise.

    Hello,
When I was using a PC, I could navigate with explorer to see my music files on my ipod (with funny names in folders named f01..). These were hidden files so I needed to configure explorer to do this.
New to my Mac, I have no idea how to do this despite my reading these discussion and help files. How do I navigate to see the music files on my IPOD?
    Thanks.
One more thing - how come in the help files apple clearly states that a windows formatted IPOD will not work on a MAC, yet it seems to work fine? Weirdos......
    jer

How do I navigate to see the music files on my IPOD?
Open up a Terminal window and type the following two commands to allow the Finder to display hidden files & folders:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
You should now be able to see the iPod_Control folder when you double-click your iPod icon on the desktop.
A word of warning... it's probably not the best idea to have Finder diplaying hidden files & folders all the time. You should be very careful, and only use the above when necessary.
To revert back to hiding the hidden files & folders... issue these two commands from a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
As for your second issue... Apple never says that it will not work. They only say that it is not supported. That's a very different statement.
It will work, as you've noticed... but Apple will not support this if you need technical assistance with this type of setup, or if anything breaks as a result.

  • Just switched to Mac, major problems with X11 installation

hi, i am experiencing major troubles with installing X11, i really hope you gonna you will manage to help me. here is the story:
    - i installed X11 from the Tiger dvd, without chossing a customized installation (i did not know i had to). so i performed a typical/full installation
    - ALL the files were apparently copied/extracted to macintosh hd/developer
    - i cannot find the file to launch the installation of x11
    - i already launched Xcode (i am an bloody iognorant, i guess i should have waited for x11 to be properly installed, right...?)
what should i do now? is it possible to uninstall X11 e start over again with an "ad hoc" installation?
please tell me i did not make any big mess on my 24hrs old macbook pro...
    thanks a lot guys
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know what you did, but I am confused by one
thing you said: "i already launched Xcode ...". Xcode
has nothing to do with X11. (The letter X is way
overused.) If what you installed was Xcode or some
part of Xcode, then perhaps you did not install X11
    at all?
On the retail Tiger DVD, X11 is installed using an
installation package named "Optional Installs". I am
not familiar with the Macbook Pro DVD, which might be
    configured differently.
i think you got the point..
now i am going to uninstall xcode and then install x11
what is the script i have to type in the terminal in order to unsinstall xcode?
the pdf file in developer's folder says the following:
    QUOTE
    * Uninstalling Xcode Tools *
To uninstall Xcode Tools on your system, type in a Terminal window:
    $ sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
To uninstall from the CD or disk image that contains Xcode Tools, type in a Terminal window:
    $ sudo perl /Volumes/Xcode\ Tools/Utilities/uninstall-devtools.pl
NOTE: The uninstaller that ships with previous versions of Xcode Tools or the Developer Tools will not clean everything off of your system properly. You should either use the one on the Xcode Tools 2.2.1 DVD, or you should use
the one installed when you installed Xcode Tools 2.2.1.
NOTE: Running the uninstall script from Xcode Tools will uninstall any previous installations of Mac OS X Developer
    Tools or Xcode Tools releases.
NOTE: After running the uninstall script, you should restart your system before installing the Xcode Tools again.
    UNQUOTE
    so what should i do?
    1 - i should type: $ sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
    or
2 - follow the instructions contained in developer>tools>unsinstall-devtools.pl
in case no. 2, please guide me, because i have no clue about how to handle such information. its arabic to me...
i am posting this same question in a new post too, because i really need to solve this problem very fast...
    thank you so so much...

  • Just switched to MAC from Windows...missing my home and end keys.  Is there a MAC equivalent?

I am sure there are combination keystrokes to equate to windows, but haven't found them all yet.  What is a good resource for finding this information?

If you get a wireless PC keyboard with Home and End keys, most programs that use that often will support it.
For instance Firefox and the free LibreOffice supports those features.
It's just a lot of Apple programs don't.

  • Thinking of switching to mac

    Hi there.
I am thinking of getting a intel duo imac.
im a linux person, so im not into
all the user friendly stuff, yet i was very impressed
by mac os x; the integration of power user abilities with a terminal, and stunning user interface is great. but, however, i do like gaming on windows (counter strike: source, combat flight sims, Age of empires 3).
    so first off:
Linux! anybody get some gentoo running on thier mac?
how does it work compared to x86 linux?
windows stuff: games, mainly. yet maybe that educational program, demo disk, and that random program that has been not been ported to mac.
whats the best windows emulator? is it necessary to
use some commercial products like microsoft virtaulPC? VMware? can you get by on linux's wine? cedega? crossover office?
    so basically:
do emulators on linux work? if so do free ones?
if not, is there a mac version of wine? how does
virtual PC work on the intel?
Sorry for the huge post, but im quite curious and i want to ditch windows already!
    thanks
    troy

I'm only going to address your first point, being that I've not the energy in me to strain my brain for exceeding information. Anyway, you mentioned that you're not really into "user friendly stuff." Obviously we all know what you mean by this, but there's a few things you need to know before making that assumption. Yes, for the average Safari browsing Mail sending iChat chatting buyer, Mac OS X is extremely friendly, and is barley an effort. But it can get much more complicated if you want it to. I just switched to Mac from many years of Windows XP, and I must say, Windows is more user friendly in a general sense. I can sit here and honestly say that Mac OS X takes more general knowledge to run than does Windows, and I'm happy with this. Many, and I mean many, make the false assumption that "Mac is too easy, Windows is hardcore!" That's totally false, and pains me to hear/read. Running the OS isn't all in black and white like Windows, and it takes getting used to and learning the OS to run it smoothly, and to your liking. Now, I've never used Linux, but I'm going to finish by saying switching to Mac will never be a mistake.

  • I just switched computers from one mac to another.  How do I keep from importing all of my music library to the new mac?

I just switched to a MacBook from a different mac and I am trying to be careful of what I am importing (my old mac has all of my music and movies, etc).  I don't want to clutter this new mac with duplicate songs etc. but I have a fairly extensive music library that is on my old mac that I would like to partially import.  Is this a possibility?  I currently use iMatch and the cloud as well.

I just made the switch to mac. I am have installed all the new PS6 CC and bridge and I am now trying to add some presets to my  ACR but when I search for the folder to place them it is not there.  From what I researched it says it should be under camera library/application support/adobe/camera raw/settings but I can only get to library/application support/adobe/ and then there are two different camera raw options I have checked both and there are not settings folder. If anyone can help me please thanks

Apple most likely has the same poor taste that Microsoft does when it come to defaults.  Microsoft likes to hide things like  settings, preset, folders etc from normal users  think the dumb or something else.  If Apple also hide things you will have to  make some system setting changes that will allow Finder to do it job and find it for you.

It sounds unlikely of course. But from your question it's hard to tell what might have filled your HDD. Are you constantly on file sharing or has filled the drive with movies?
Best way to tell is to start checking what folders occupy space. "Get Info" for the HDD and its subfolders is a way to start checking where the data in question resides.
And as BGreg say, call Apple support is also a good way to begin with.
