Just tried to update the iTouch from 4.1 to 4.2 - it froze and isn't being recognized, or restoring.....Help!

Need help - this is my son's iTouch, and he lives on the thing.....

I did a hard reset on mine because to start it fresh because I was having problems with syncing come to find out it is this newest verision of iTunes, it is not recognizing iPod Touchs or iPads. Wonderful, right.

I hope that you can see this response. The forum software is acting quite bizarre today.
You really do want to restore with your own computer. There is an off chance that you might be able to backup first, but I really think it is a very slight chance now since you got the connect to iTunes screen. But on the chance that when you connect, it sees the iPad and allows a backup, I would to not have you wait to use your own Mac.
If you cannot create a backup, you will lose everything that you have put on since the date to the last backup. So of your last backup was three weeks ago, you will restore the iPad to the condition that it was in three weeks ago.
If you do a lot of traveling, using iCloud for backups might be a very good idea. I use iTunes primarily and I backup my MacBook Pro with Time Capsule, but I still use iCloud as a secondary backup. I don't have enough data that I have exceeded the free 5 GB that you get with iCloud, so I do use it just in case.
I can't explain what happened with the update, I can only tell you that it does happen to other users. I have never had a problem when I updated and I having been updating over WiFi since iOS 5 came out. Taking a guess, maybe an interruption in the connection - especially of you tried updating using a hotel's WiFi network, or a power surge maybe. Whatever the cause, it is most likely a one time thing. That doesn't help your situation I know, but hopefully it won't happen again.

Do you mean delete the music from your phone, or copy the purchases over to your computer's iTunes ?
If delete then you can enable the left-hand sidebar that used to show automatically on previous versions via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC - you can then select the Music category under the phone 'device' on that sidebar and use the right-hand side to select and delete music from it.
If you want to copy your iTunes purchases over to your computer's iTunes then File > Devices > Transfer Purchases should copy them over (if you are using a PC and the drop-down menus aren't showing then control-B should get them to do so)

I hooked up to itunes, it said that my phone needed to be restored. After trying to restore it, itunes says an an error occured and my phone could not be retored. Now itunes won't recognize my phone! I have been having trouble with my iPad 2 lately. I went and down loaded iOS 7 and installed it. Then when I came back it showed the low battery so I figured that the update just drained my battery. I plugged it into the charger and after a while it just showed the apple logo. Then when I came back to look at it it again was showing low battery even though it was on the charger the whole time. It seems to be stuck in a cycle of low battery and the apple logo, and it just can't seem to break that cycle. I need all the help I can get. Any suggestions?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

I have found a temporary solution, allowing the previous version of iTunes (v. 11.1.3 (x64) in my case) to be re-installed. It will allow you to re-establish use of iTunes until the Apple software engineers fix the most recent disasterous upgrade (v. 11.1.4). Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it! It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

That situation went from inconvenient to complicated quickly. Wait for any pending orders to drop off, wait for things to clear up, wait till your upgrade comes up and then upgrade when your contract is fulfilled. I would have suggested a replacement phone, I know, with only a month left why couldn't you just upgrade early, but these situations where people try to upgrade early always end horribly and once a phone order starts, it almost cannot finish until something winds up shipped received and returned. Sorry this happened the way it did. Definitely not efficient.

- You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
- On the computer go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backup of her iPod.
Note that the backup does not included synced media like apps and music.
- Is she update the iPod via iTunes on other then the computer she syncs with the media on the iPod gets erased. Same for if on the syncing computer if the media was not in the iTunes library.

Since posting the above - I have now tried downloading the update on my iPhone rather than via iTunes, and its just worked and installed and seems fine! Was a lot quicker as well than the download time via iTunes
